‘It was me’: Suspect in Charlie Kirk shooting appeared to confess in Discord chat
Hannah Knowles, Shawn Boburg, Aaron Schaffer • Sept. 15, 2025
The 22-year-old suspect in Charlie Kirk’s killing appears to have confessed to friends in an online chat shortly before turning himself in to law enforcement, according to two people familiar with the chat and screenshots obtained by The Washington Post.
“Hey guys, I have bad news for you all,” said a message from an account belonging to the suspect, Tyler Robinson, on the online platform Discord.“It was me at UVU yesterday. im sorry for all of this.” The message was sent Thursday night, about two hours before officials said Robinson was taken into custody==.
A member of the group chat shared an image of the conversation with The Post and confirmed that it came from Robinson’s account. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect their privacy and out of fear of harassment.
Discord provided a copy of the message with the confession to authorities, according to a person familiar with the company’s interaction with law enforcement. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss details of the investigation.
The message was sent from Robinson’s account to a small private group of online friends, the person said. Discord is working closely with the FBI and local authorities, providing information about Robinson’s online activities on the platform, the person added. Discord has said that an internal investigation found “no evidence that the suspect planned this incident or promoted violence on Discord.”
The Utah County Sheriff’s Office referred The Post to the Utah Department of Public Safety, which did not respond to a request for comment. Spokespeople for the Utah DPS as well as for the FBI and the Department of Justice declined to comment.
Robinson was arrested last week after a 33-hour manhunt, accused of fatally shooting one of the country’s most prominent conservative activists at a Utah Valley University event. Authorities have said one of Robinson’s family members reached out to a friend who then contacted law enforcement, saying Robinson had confessed or implied that he committed the crime.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R) said over the weekend that Robinson’s motive is still under investigation but that the suspect appears to have held a “leftist ideology.” Officials say their interviews indicate that Robinson became “more political” in recent years and had criticized Kirk.
The Discord conversation shared with The Post shows members of the group chat reacting to Kirk’s shooting last Wednesday — before the news broke that Robinson was allegedly involved. The group included about 30 people, according to the person who provided screenshots.
“Charlie Kirk got shot,” one friend wrote Wednesday afternoon, according to an image of the messages.
“I just saw the video holy s—,” another user wrote about an hour and a half later, adding of Kirk:“Bro didn’t deserve to go out like that sad.”
The only response from Robinson’s account came the next day with the message announcing “bad news.”
“im surrendering through a sheriff friend in a few moments,” the message, posted at 7:57 p.m. local time in Utah, continued. “thanks for all the good times and laughs, you’ve all been so amazing, thank you all for everything.”Robinson was taken into custody at 10 p.m. that night, according to FBI Director Kash Patel.
No one responded to Robinson that night, according to the screenshots obtained by The Post. But the next day, one friend wrote that the apparent confession seemed to be true. The friend asked group members to “pray for Tyler and his repentance” and then turned to Kirk.
“While Charlie Kirk’s politics were not acceptable to some I ask that we all say a prayer for him and his family during these confusing times,” the friend added.
The New York Times reported on a conversation in a different Discord chat group earlier the same day. In that conversation, Robinson joked that a “doppelgänger” was trying to get him in trouble after law enforcement released images of a shooting suspect who resembled Robinson. Cox confirmed the existence of that conversation on Sunday and said Robinson’s friends “did not believe it was actually him” at that point. The person who provided other Discord messages to The Post said they are from a different group.

Trump advocates end to quarterly earnings reports

President Trump says companies should no longer be forced to report on a quarterly basis
President Donald Trump floated the idea Monday of companies no longer providing earnings report on a quarterly basis and switching to semiannual instead.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission told CNBC later Monday that it is actively looking into that plan.
“At President Trump’s request, Chairman [Paul] Atkins and theSEC is prioritizing this proposal to further eliminate unnecessary regulatory burdens on companies,” an agency spokesperson said.
Trump had initially raised the idea in a Truth Social post, saying it is “subject to SEC approval” and would “save money, and allow managers to focus on properly running their companies.”“Did you ever hear the statement that, ‘China has a 50 to 100 year view on management of a company, whereas we run our companies on a quarterly basis??? Not good!!!’” Trump said.
During his first term, Trump had asked the SEC to study the issue but no recommendations came of the matter.
The wisdom of quarterly reports has come under question before. In a 2018 op-ed piece for The Wall Street Journal, Berkshire Hathaway’s Warren Buffett and JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon advocated doing away with quarterly guidance, though not earnings reports.
“In our experience, quarterly earnings guidance often leads to an unhealthy focus on short-term profits at the expense of long-term strategy, growth and sustainability,” the pair wrote. Current regulations require companies to report earnings on a quarterly basis, though providing forecasts is voluntary. The rules can be changed either from the Securities and Exchange Commission or could be altered by Congress.
Logistically, the move would not require support from Congress but rather just a majority vote on the SEC, where Republicans currently hold a 3-1 voting majority, with one open seat. The process likely would take six to 12 months, said Sarah Bianchi, chief strategist of international political affairs and public policy at Evercore ISI.
“Administrations have to varying degrees given policy steers to the SEC, and with Trump’s directive this is now something that has to be taken seriously as a possibility,” Bianchi, a former U.S. deputy trade representative, said in a note. “However, the SEC has also historically been able to operate with some measure of independence.”….

UGH…Trump DOJ sued by Epstein prosecutor Maurene Comey over ‘illegal’ firing
Published Mon, Sep 15 202512:31 PM EDT Updated 4 Hours Ago
Key Points
• Maurene Comey, a federal prosecutor involved in criminal cases against Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, sued the Trump administration to get her job back.
• Comey, a daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, said she received no explanation for her termination.
Maurene Comey, a federal prosecutor involved in criminal cases against Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, sued the Department of Justice on Monday to get her job back after she was fired from the Trump administration in July.
Comey, a daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, received no explanation for her “unlawful and unconstitutional” termination, her attorneys wrote in the lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan.
“In truth, there is no legitimate explanation,” they wrote. (They couldn’t exactly say, is hugely overweight and the worried about her health! KEK)
“Rather, Defendants fired Ms. Comey solely or substantially because her father is former FBI Director James B. Comey, or because of her perceived political affiliation and beliefs, or both.”
The lawsuit names the Department of Justice, the Executive Office of the President and their respective leaders as defendants, along with the Office of Personnel Management and the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys.
The Justice Department declined CNBC’s request for comment on the suit.
Comey is the latest among dozens of DOJ employees who have turned to the courts after being terminated during Trump’s second term. Comey, like a number of other ousted government officials, had been targeted by Laura Loomer, a far-right activist who has taken credit for influencing the Trump administration to fire people.
After Comey was fired in mid-July, Loomer boasted that the move followed “my pressure campaign on [Attorney General Pam Bondi] to fire Comey’s daughter and Comey’s son in law from the DOJ.”
Comey’s husband, Lucas Isaacharoff, “voluntarily resigned” from the DOJ in May, according to the lawsuit.
Following her ouster, Comey warned that she was being made an example of in order to quell potential dissent within the DOJ.
“If a career prosecutor can be fired without reason, fear may seep into the decisions of those who remain,” Comey wrote in a farewell note to staff at the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office.
“Fear is the tool of a tyrant, wielded to suppress independent thought. Instead of fear, let this moment fuel the fire that already burns in the heart of this place,” she wrote. “A fire of righteous indignation at abuses of power. Of commitment to seek justice for victims.”
