US news anchor resigns after suspension for pro-Kirk segment

Beni Rae Harmony has said she was punished for honoring the late activist on air and announced she would be leaving the station

Illinois TV news anchor Beni Rae Harmony has revealed that she was suspended from WICS ABC20after honoring Charlie Kirk on air, and has announced her resignation. Harmony says she chose her values over her job.

Kirk, a conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed during a public event last week. His death has provoked widespread reactions across the political spectrum.

On Friday, at the beginning of her segment, Harmony delivered a speech recalling her work with Kirk, the impact he had on her life, and what he stood for.She urged viewers to uphold their values and support each other. “When conversations stop happening, when individuals become wordless, that’s when violence begins,”she said, quoting Kirk.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Harmony revealed that the tribute led to her suspension by WICS ABC20. She wrote that while many in the mainstream media have been disciplined for mocking Kirk’s assassination, she believes she is “the first to be targeted for honoring him on air.”

“Effective immediately, I have resigned from WICS_ABC20 after being SUSPENDED for airing a non-partisan tribute to Charlie Kirk this past Friday,” Harmony wrote. She added that her decision was guided by “values that are essential to who I am, which I refuse to set aside in order to keep a job.I choose my faith and love of country, and always will.

Following Kirk’s death, a number of individuals have faced consequences for celebrating the killing and making disparaging comments. MSNBC cut ties with analyst Matthew Dowd, who suggested that Kirk’s “hateful words” were what got him killed.Nasdaq dismissed an employee, the US Secret Service placed an agent on leave, and United Airlines, Fox Sports, and the Washington Post have also taken action against staff.

The investigation into Kirk’s murder is ongoing. The suspect, Tyler Robinson, 22, has been arrested and is alleged to have etched anti-fascist slogans onto bullet casings. The governor of Utah said Robinson was “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology.” Reports also claim he was living with a transgender partner.

Far-right triples vote in German coalition stronghold

The AfD has come in third with 14.5% of the vote in North Rhine-Westphalia – Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s home state

The right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has significantly improved its position in North Rhine-Westphalia, coming in third place in Sunday’s regional elections. The key region – where Chancellor Friedrich Merz hails from – is a key stronghold for the ruling coalition.

In a post on X on Monday, theAfD declared that it has become the “people’s party” of the region, nearly tripling its results compared to the previous vote in 2020, improving from 5.1% to 14.5%. The statement attributed the party’s strong showing to a growing “desire for real political change” in Germany’s most populous region.

Martin Vincentz, the AfD leader in North Rhine-Westphalia, said the regional elections were a “referendum on the direction of our country.”

Achim Post, thechairman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the region, which came in second with 22.1% of the vote, acknowledged that this was a “bad result.” The SPD slipped over two percentage points compared to the 2020 elections.

North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Hendrik Wust, who represents the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), similarlystated that the election outcome “cannot let us sleep soundly.” His party secured first place with 33.3% of the vote.

An RTL/ntv Trendbarometerpoll last month indicated that the AfD had overtaken Merz’s CDU as the most popular party, with support of 26% of the respondents.

Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig said in May that“it is essential to consider a party ban,” calling the AfD a “potential danger for our democracy.”

Earlier that month, Germany’s domestic intelligence agency was forced to temporarily suspend its designation of the AfD as a “confirmed right-wing extremist entity,” after the party filed a lawsuit in a Cologne court.

Founded in 2013, the AfD has been critical of Germany’s open-door migration policies as well as Berlin’s refusal to engage in diplomacy with Russia over the Ukraine conflict.

The AfD came in second in February’s federal election, with 152 seats in the 630-seat Bundestag.

US playing drone warfare ‘catch-up’ – CNN

The American military is struggling with production capacity, designs, policymaking, and tactics, the network has reported

The US lacks new drone tactics and production capacity to build at scale and is playing ‘catch up,’ CNN reported on Monday, citing an army general.

Both Russia and Ukraine are now producing hundreds of thousands or even millions of drones annually for reconnaissance, close air support, and long-range strikes.

The US military, however, was utterly unprepared to rapidly produce small, cheap drones,as the industry has for years focused on large, expensive systems such as jets and tanks, the article said, adding that the Pentagon is “rushing to catch up”, including by 3D printing drones and organizing training on simulators.

One of the key issues is that US drones cannot include Chinese parts, but domestic alternatives are significantly more costly, the network claimed.

”This is not tomorrow’s problem. This is today’s problem,” Maj. Gen. Curt Taylor, commander of the U.S. Army’s 1st Armored Division, told CNN. “And the first fight of the next war is going to involve more drones than any of us have ever seen.”

Ukraine has offered to assist the US. Vladimir Zelensky has pitched a $50 billion plan to co-produce 10 million drones over five years to US President Donald Trump=. Officials in Kiev have described Ukraine’s drone expertise as Zelensky’s “geopolitical card,” with CNN noting that Ukrainian military leaders have been lecturing NATO on the need to invest in UAVs.

Just last week EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the creation of a drone wall on the bloc’s Eastern frontier.

CNN recalled that early into the conflict, the US provided Ukraine with 100 Switchblade loitering munitions, but the deliveries stopped after complaints from Ukrainian troops that they were less effective against Russian electronic warfare.

In July, the New York Times also reported that the US lags behind Russia and China in producing and deploying drones.Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth acknowledgedthe gap, saying: “While our adversaries have produced millions of cheap drones, we were mired in bureaucratic red tape.”
