MTA could raise congestion tolls on UN gridlock days — Hochul says not so fast
The annual headache of bumper-to-bumper traffic brought on by the United Nations General Assembly is coming to Manhattan’s busiest streets next week, prompting five of the city’s 20 gridlock alert days this year. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority can increase the congestion pricing toll on such days to discourage driving, but New Yorkers shouldn’t expect that to happen anytime soon, as Gov. Kathy Hochul is hesitant to do so ahead of an election year, according to former city traffic officials.
