UCLA puts ‘race and equity’ director on leave following Charlie Kirk comments

-UCLA placed Johnathan Perkins, director of the DEI office's race and equity division, on leave after he made controversial social media comments celebrating the murder of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

-Perkins' posts included statements like it being acceptable to be happy about Kirk's death and questioning why he shouldn't be dead, prompting UCLA to initiate an investigation and remove content from their DEI website.

-Perkins has a history of making inflammatory remarks, previously expressing hopes for the death of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Immigration judge orders Mahmoud Khalil deported to Syria or Algeria

 

An immigration judge in Louisiana has ordered pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, a legal permanent resident of the U.S., deported to Syria or Algeria for failing to disclose certain information on his green card application, according to documents filed in federal court Wednesday by his lawyers.

 

Khalil’s lawyers suggested in a filing that they intend to appeal the deportation order, but expressed concern that the appeal process will likely be swift and unfavorable.

 

The order from the immigration judge, Jamee Comans, came despite a separate order in Khalil’s federal case in New Jersey blocking his deportation while that court considers Khalil’s legal argument that his detention and deportation are unlawful retaliation for his Palestinian advocacy.

 

Khalil’s March 8 arrest and subsequent detention in Louisiana was part of the Trump administration’s aggressive crackdown on foreign-born pro-Palestinian academics who were studying or working in the U.S. legally. Khalil, a former Columbia graduate student who helped organize campus protests, was arrested at his Manhattan residence and put into deportation proceedings. He has not been charged with a crime.

 

In a letter to the New Jersey federal judge, Michael Farbiarz, Khalil’s lawyers said they have 30 days from Sept. 12, the date of the immigration judge’s ruling, to appeal her decision to the Board of Immigration Appeals. The lawyers said they expect that process to be “swift” and that an appeal of the BIA decision, which would go to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, is unlikely to be successful, since, they wrote, the appeals court “almost never” grants stays of removal to noncitizens.

 

“As a result,” they wrote, “the only meaningful impediment to Petitioner’s physical removal from the United States would be this Court’s important order prohibiting removal during the pendency of his federal habeas case.” And, they wrote, “nothing would preserve his lawful permanent resident status.”

 

In a statement, Khalil, a Palestinian originally from Syria, accused the Trump administration of using “fascist tactics.”

 

“It is no surprise that the Trump administration continues to retaliate against me for my exercise of free speech. Their latest attempt, through a kangaroo immigration court, exposes their true colors once again,” Khalil said.

 

For more than three months earlier this year, Khalil was held in detention in Louisiana after the Trump administration arrested him, invoking a rarely used provision of immigration law that allows the government to deport any noncitizen — even a legal resident — if the secretary of State determines that the person’s continued presence harms U.S. foreign policy interests.

 

In June, Farbiarz, a Biden appointee, blocked the Trump administration from deporting Khalil on foreign policy grounds. Days later, the judge ordered Khalil’s release after determining that he was not a flight risk or danger to the community.

 

That allowed him to return to New York, where he was reunited with his wife, a U.S. citizen, and his newborn son, who was born during his detention.

 

The Trump administration, however, has continued to seek Khalil’s deportation via another rationale it tacked on after his arrest in Manhattan: that when he applied for a green card, he failed to disclose all his past employment and membership in certain organizations.

BREAKING: Per ICE sources, the drunk driver arrested by NYPD for murder on Saturday after he fatally mowed down a 16-year-old girl who rejected his sexual advances is a previously deported Honduran illegal alien w/ multiple prior DUI arrests. I’m told he was also ignored by ICE after an October 2024 arrest for possession of a forged instrument because the Biden administration didn’t consider him an immigration enforcement priority.

 

I’m told EDWIN CRUZ-GOMEZ was last deported in 2005 and has DUI arrests on Long Island in 2013 & again in January of this year. He was released before ICE could lodge a detainer.

 

ICE has now filed a detainer on him with local authorities in NY for his murder charges.

 

Police say he drunkenly plowed a 2009 Chevy Suburban into teen Jhoanny Gomez-Alvarez following a heated fight with the girl, her boyfriend, her mother and the mother’s friend Saturday morning outside an Elmhurst bar. Gomez-Alvarez was pinned against a pillar and died. Her mother survived.

Friend of former FBI Director James Comey subpoenaed in federal probe

 

A Columbia law professor who is a friend and adviser to former FBI Director James Comey was subpoenaed last week by federal prosecutors in connection with a criminal probe into whether Comey allegedly lied in testimony before Congress, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News.

 

Daniel Richman has previously acknowledged his role as an intermediary between Comey and reporters in the wake of Comey's 2017 firing by President Donald Trump during his first term over Trump's anger with the FBI's investigation into his 2016 campaign.

 

Richman met with federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of Virginia on Tuesday, sources familiar with the matter said.

 

In public statements, Richman has said he shared the content of memos written by Comey about his interactions with Trump with a reporter from the New York Times.

 

Trump later accused Comey of breaking the law by sharing his memos, arguing they contained classified information, though Richman later told ABC News in a statement that none of the documents had any classification markings.

 

The subpoena to Richman, according to sources, stems from an investigation into testimony Comey made before Congress in September 2020 about the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

 

Comey has repeatedly defended his handling of the early stages of the investigation and denied any decisions were based out of political animus towards Trump.

 

A previous investigation by the Justice Department's inspector general faulted Comey for violating FBI policies over his handling of the memos regarding his interactions with President Trump, though the DOJ under Trump's first administration declined to prosecute him.

 

An attorney for Richman and an attorney for Comey did not immediately respond to a request for comment from ABC News.

 

A Justice Department spokesperson also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
