Majority Of Democrats Refuse To Support Resolution Rejecting Political Violence

In a vote that exposed the dark side of the majority of Democrats, the House on Friday passed a resolution honoring slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk and rejecting the political violence of recent years. The passage, however, was not without substantial opposition.

The vote was 310-58, with 95 Democrats joining all 215 Republicans in voting yes on the nonbinding resolution. The 58 no votes all came from Democrats, but another 38 Democrats voted present (would not take an open side) and another 22 Democrats did not vote. In other words, 118 Democrats in Congress refused to support the resolution.

The resolution passed nine days after a gunman assassinated the 31-year-old Kirk while he was speaking to a large crowd at Utah Valley University. Kirk was a co-founder of Turning Point USA, which helped turn out the youth vote for Donald Trump in 2024. The alleged shooter, Tyler Robinson, is a confirmed leftist living with his transgender boyfriend. The assassination was followed by mass online celebration by a large contingent of leftists.

Democrat leaders have sought to hide or downplay both of these facts, while continuing to suggest that Kirk deserved to die because of his political positions.

New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), who has continued to portray Kirk as a "racist" since his death, argued against the resolution, claiming that it would "bring great pain" to millions of Americans affected by the Jim Crow era. Many Democrats continue to take Kirk's comments out of context as a way to defame his memory (a subtle rationalization for his murder).

Social media platforms censored doctors, nurses, and anecdotal evidence that challenged official measures. At the same time, they promoted voices supporting the administration’s line and selectively allowed anecdotal evidence only if it reinforced official policy. During COVID, there was a disturbing slide into elitism: the idea that only “experts” should be allowed to speak. Yet if those experts opposed the measures, no matter their credentials, they were dismissed as not “expert enough.”

There was not a single peer-reviewed scientific paper supporting school closures, yet anyone who questioned them was accused of “denying the science.” The silencing of dissenting scientific voices violates core conservative principles of free speech and open inquiry. Science advances through debate and questioning, not through centralized messaging campaigns that shut down legitimate scientific discussion.

The most powerful advertising for the vaccines came from government messaging, funded by taxpayers, telling us that “vaccines prevent transmission” and that if everyone complied, we could all “return to normal.” The government claimed vaccination was voluntary, yet repeatedly blamed the unvaccinated for the nation’s inability to return to normal. In reality, all it had to do was officially end the emergency and allow life to resume. Instead, citizens were encouraged to pressure or even inform on their neighbors who refused to comply.

By reinforcing lockdown policies through misleading messaging, the campaign caused significant economic damage. School closures and business restrictions imposed massive costs on society, particularly harming small businesses and working families. Meanwhile, certain businesses were allowed to remain open and thrive, with the government deciding which ones were “essential” and which were not.

Founder Of NYC Pro-Democracy Group Pleads Guilty To Spying For China

A Chinese man living in New York City has pleaded guilty to spying on his fellow activists on behalf of the Chinese regime’s intelligence agency, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced on Sept. 16.

Tang Yuanjun, 68, a naturalized U.S. citizen, was a prominent figure in New York City’s Chinese dissident community, having participated in protests outside the Chinese Consulate in the New York City borough of Manhattan and founded a pro-democracy group, the Chinese Democracy Party Eastern U.S. Headquarters Inc., based in the Flushing neighborhood of the borough of Queens.

Despite his public advocacy against Beijing, Tang was secretly working under the direction of the Chinese intelligence service to collect information on his fellow Chinese American dissidents, according to a guilty plea entered on Sept. 16.

As part of the plea, Tang admitted to one count of conspiring to act as an agent of a foreign government without notifying the attorney general, which is punishable by up to five years in prison.

“For years, Yuanjun Tang abused the trust he had gained among pro-democracy activists in New York City and around the United States by secretly accepting tasks from Chinese intelligence officers and reporting on persons of interest to the [People’s Republic of China] and events conducted in support of democracy,” U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said in a statement.

“Tang’s covert operations violated our nation’s sovereignty and threatened the security of New Yorkers exercising their fundamental rights to free speech and free association. Tang’s plea … illustrates our profound commitment to protecting American ideals from malign foreign influence.”

The US, UK and other Western nations that continue to supply weapons to West Jerusalem are equally responsible for the Israeli “genocide” in Gaza, Roger Waters, British rock legend and co-founder of the band Pink Floyd, has said.

In September of last year, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution that called on Israel to withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories and for all states to take effective action against violations of international law by West Jerusalem. However, attacks continue; the IDF launched an operation to take control of Gaza City earlier this month.

Waters joined a large crowd which gathered outside UN headquarters in New York for the anniversary of the vote on Thursday, calling for an arms embargo against Israel and action to halt the “genocide” of Palestinians.

There, he told RT that the conduct of Israel in Gaza was “criminally insane. Genocide is just ultimately the worst crime that any of us have ever dreamt of, and they are doing it in front of our eyes.”

“And it is not just the Israelis, it is [British Prime minister] Keir Starmer, the UK government, the American [government], the French, the Germans,” he stressed.

The musician insisted that “we must free Palestine, the country, from the river to the sea and we have to do it now. It will be too late.”

The Israeli Foreign Ministry rejected the report as “fake,” accusing its authors of being “proxies” of the Palestinian armed group Hamas and calling for the “immediate abolition” of the panel.

West Jerusalem launched its military operation in Gaza in October 2023 in response to a deadly assault on southern Israel in which Hamas killed about 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages. Over 65,000 Palestinians have since been killed and more than 166,000 others injured in the enclave, according to local health authorities.

The Trump Administration Misses Key Deadlines for Imposing Restrictions on Gain-of-Function Research

Biosafety advocates worry the administration is backtracking on its promise to implement meaningful restrictions on the type of research that likely caused the COVID-19 pandemic.

Biosafety hawks were initially optimistic that the incoming second Trump administration would at last place binding constraints on so-called "dangerous gain-of-function" research, in which pathogens are manipulated in laboratories to be more virulent or transmissible in humans.

The administration's picks for top health policy jobs—most notably National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Jay Bhattacharya and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—are both gain-of-function critics who have asserted that this type of research created SARS-COV-2 in Wuhan, China.

In May, the White House issued an executive order creating a broader definition for dangerous gain-of-function research and promising that new restrictions on it would be issued within a few months.

"The conduct of this research does not protect us from pandemics. There's always a danger that in doing this research, it might leak out by accident even and cause a pandemic," said Bhattacharya at the Oval Office press conference when the order was signed. With the order, "the public can say 'no, don't take this risk.'"

But the deadlines for the new restrictions called for in that order have since come and gone without any new policy being released. Meanwhile, there are indications that the NIH is continuing to fund risky virological research.

Gain-of-function critics who were optimistic that this research would finally be put back in the box are now concerned that the Trump administration will fail to implement meaningful restrictions.

"There was a promise to deliver these policies. It's very disappointing to see that not emerge," Bryce Nickels, a professor of genetics at Rutgers University, tells Reason. Nickels briefly served as a contractor advising the NIH on new gain-of-function policy before being let go in August.

In his role as an NIH contractor, Nickels reviewed draft policies on gain-of-function research that the May executive order called for. He said that there was no practical reason why the White House shouldn't have been able to meet its deadline to issue the new policy.

The White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), which is responsible for issuing the new gain-of-function regulations called for in the May executive order, did not respond to Reason's request for comment.

When Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir delivered a provocative speech on August 3 calling for not just the destruction of Hamas, but the occupation of the Gaza Strip and the voluntary emigration of Palestinians from the enclave, it wasn’t just what he said that raised eyebrows, but where he said it.

The video, posted on Ben Gvir’s X account on Tisha B’Av, the Jewish day of mourning over the ancient destruction of the First and Second Temples, showed the far-right member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet standing dressed in a white shirt and dark blazer in front of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

The mosque is built on a site venerated by Muslims and Jews alike. Jews know it as the Temple Mount, the site of the two biblical Temples, and where, according to Jewish eschatology, a Third Temple will rise to usher in a messianic era. Muslims call it the Haram al-Sharif, or Noble Sanctuary, and consider it the third-holiest site in Islam, where Muhammad ascended to heaven.

The Temple Mount was captured by Israel in the Six Day War, but in a subsequent deal, control was restored to a Jordanian waqf, or Islamic religious trust.

In a controversial but longstanding arrangement known as the “status quo,” Muslims are allowed by the Waqf to worship at Al-Aqsa; Jews can visit but not pray there.

On Tisha B’Av, Ben Gvir led a group in prayer at the site — an unprecedented act of public worship by a government minister condemned by Jordan as “an unacceptable provocation and a reprehensible escalation.”

To No One’s Surprise, British Spy Chief Admits Old Relations With Syria’s New Leader

To the surprise of absolutely no one, outgoing MI6 chief Richard Moore acknowledged on September 19 that the United Kingdom forged a backdoor relationship with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) before the group’s rise to power in Syria.

“Having forged a relationship with HTS a year or two before they toppled Bashar al-Assad, we forged a path for the UK government to return to the country within weeks,” Moore said in a speech at the British consulate in Istanbul.

Moore, who led the MI6 for five years, went on to boast that the relationship with HTS leader at the time Ahmad al-Sharaa facilitated Britain’s diplomatic return to Syria after the fall of the Assad regime.

“Syria is a good example of where people can get ahead of events, it really helps when they suddenly, unexpectedly, move to a faster pace,” the outgoing chief of Britain’s foreign intelligence service told reporters in Istanbul.

Sharaa was a lieutenant of ISIS founder Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. When the war first broke out in Syria, al-Baghdadi sent al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohamad al-Julani, to Syria to found the al-Nusra Front.

As the group evolved, it broke ties with ISIS and later al-Qaeda, eventually rebranding as HTS. The group led the final offensive that brought down the Assad regime last December. It then went on to dissolve itself after installing the Interim Government.

While Moore claimed that the UK began communicating with Sharaa just “a year or two” ago, Arab media reports from as far back as 2021 first revealed the relationship between the two sides. In that year, it was reported that Jonathan Powell, a veteran British back-channel negotiator, traveled to northern Syria and met with Sahraa.

Powell, who returned to the UK government as National Security Adviser last year, was among the first British officials to meet with the Interim Government in Syria right after the fall of the Assad regime.

The UK went on to re-established diplomatic relations with the Interim Government in July during a visit by then-foreign secretary David Lammy to Damascus. The visit was the first by a British minister to Syria in 14 years. It’s worth noting that Lammy also confirmed soon after the fall of the Assad regime that the UK had had previous contact with HTS.

Britain remains heavily engaged in Syria, with Special Representative Ann Snow involved in the country’s day-to-day affairs.

‘Pure Incitement’: Google Allows Israeli Sponsored Propaganda Aimed at Global Sumud Flotilla

Evidence posted over the weekend online appears to show that tech giant Google has allowed the government of Israel to purchase sponsored content spots so that online users searching on the Global Sumud Flotilla will be shown inaccurate, propagandized content accusing the flotilla particpants as being allied with violent, terrorist elements.

The Sumud Flotilla—a group of international humanitarians and peace activists sailing toward the coast of Gaza with over 40 vessels in its fleet as a way to break the unlawful blockade of life-saving supplies imposed by Israel and its allies amid an ongoing genocide—has no documented connection to any terrorist organization and has made clear repeatedly that it is a completely nonviolent effort by independent groups and individuals who want to see an end to the suffering, starvation, and death taking place in the besieged Palestinian enclave.

In Arabic, sumud translates as steadfastness and resilience. On its website, the groups says, “We are a coalition of everyday people—organizers, humanitarians, doctors, artists, clergy, lawyers, and seafarers—who believe in human dignity and the power of nonviolent action.”

David Adler, an American economist and co-coordinator general of Progressive International who is traveling as part of the flotilla, posted a screenshot Saturday of search results showing the sponsored content, calling it “very terrifying.” Many others online reported getting the same results, though the appearance of the sponsored content seemed to depend on the user’s location or other variables.

Yanis Varoufakis, the former finance minister of Greece and co-founder of Progessive International, posted a similar screenshot earlier in the day, describing the coordinated ad buy as part of an escalating “smear campaign against the flotilla” by the Israeli government.

“First, they called it the Hamas Flotilla, deploying the usual tactic of slapping the Hamas logo on anyone whom they are about to murder, maim or mutilate,” said Varoufakis. “Now, with the full cooperation of Google, they are ensuring that top search results—received by anyone who Googles ‘Global Sumud Flotilla’—identify the brave women and men who are sailing to Gaza to end the blockade and genocide of 2 million people are people ‘harboring terror.’ It is clear that Israel is paving the ground for an attack on the flotilla.
