Moonshot: Mexico's KIO Data Centers joins Lonestar space project as LatAm's only partner
Friday, September 19, 2025
Mexican operator KIO Data Centers has been selected to join a pioneering "digital constellation" project led by US space-based data center firm Lonestar, which seeks to enable data storage in space.
KIO is the only Latin American company participating in the initiative, which aims to preserve sensitive population and government data worldwide.
Under the collaboration, KIO's terrestrial facilities will serve as "digital consulates,” connecting with Lonestar’s orbital "data embassies" to create a hybrid data ecosystem.
"Storing data in space offers a new level of security, shielding it from real-time cyberattacks, natural disasters, and even physical surveillance.
This approach ensures data sovereignty by aligning with national regulatory requirements and offers regional accessibility from space," Lonestar said in a statement.
"Additionally, in-space data storage is sustainable, leveraging abundant solar energy and the natural vacuum for efficient cooling," it argued.
The first stage of Lonestar's venture involves setting up a ground station antenna to connect with a satellite in cislunar orbit, enabling secure, continuous transmission to space-based storage.
In a second phase, Lonestar plans to develop commercial data centers on the Moon to provide off-planet storage, disaster recovery and edge processing services.
Its Freedom Data Center project, launched on the IM-2 mission, is designed to safeguard mission-critical data for governments and enterprises from terrestrial disasters.
The solar-powered system uses solid-state drives (SSDs) and a field programmable gate array (FPGA), which Lonestar says is crucial for "protecting humanity's most important information for the long term."
Storage capacity in the project is expected to grow from 15PB in 2027 to 400PB by 2032, with long-term plans to expand to exabyte and yottabyte levels, supported by SpaceX Starships.
KIO currently operates 20 data centers in Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Colombia and the Dominican Republic.
The company is expanding QR02, its second facility at the El Marqués industrial park in Mexican Querétaro state, which is set to open in 2025, while is already planning a third data center on the same campus, to be named QR03.

How to watch the Sept. 21 partial solar eclipse live online for free
September 19, 2025
A partial solar eclipse will darken Earth's sky on Sept. 21 and you can watch it unfold live online courtesy of a livestream hosted by Time and Date, starting at 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT).
During a partial solar eclipse, the moon passes directly between our planet and the sun, covering part of the solar disk while leaving a glowing crescent framed by the curve of Earth's natural satellite.
For the Sept. 21 event, maximum eclipse occurs at 3:41 p.m. ET (1941 GMT).
Fewer than 17 million people — just 0.2% of the world's population — will see the solar eclipse first hand from island nations including New Zealand, Samoa and Tonga.
The rest of us can follow the solar spectacle from home via the livestream hosted here on Space.com.
How to watch the Sept. 21 partial solar eclipse online
Time and Date is teaming up with the Dunedin Astronomical Society in New Zealand to host a free YouTube livestream of the Sept. 21-22 eclipse.
The broadcast will feature real-time views of each phase, paired with expert commentary provided by astrophysicist Graham Jones and journalist Anne Buckle.
Viewers will be treated to a breathtaking sight as the sun rises over New Zealand's eastern horizon with its left side partially eclipsed, along with a striking view of the eclipse maximum, when over 70% of the solar disk will be hidden by the silhouette of Earth's moon.
Of course, there's always the risk that clouds could arrive to ruin the show, so fingers crossed for clear skies! Remember, attempting to view a partial solar eclipse with the naked eye can lead to immediate and permanent loss of vision.

AL congressman files SPACEPORT Act after Huntsville chosen for Space Command headquarters
Sep 19, 2025
An Alabama congressman has filed a bill that would give federal funding to spaceports across the United States.
Rep. Dale Strong, from Alabama’s 5th congressional district, re-introduced the Spaceport Project Opportunities for Resilient Transportation (SPACEPORT) Act.
If passed, the bill would provide dedicated federal support to spaceports, ensuring the nation can meet growing civil, commercial, and national security demands for space transportation, according to Rep. Strong’s office.
Strong said that Huntsville International Airport (HSV) was the first commercial airport approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to be used as a reentry site for space vehicle landings.
The bill's reintroduction comes after President Donald Trump announced on September 2 that Space Command will be moved from Colorado to Huntsville, Alabama.
“With unmatched capabilities across civil, commercial, and national security space programs, North Alabama is uniquely positioned to drive the infrastructure that will define the next generation of space innovation,” Rep. Strong said.

Four killed in Ukrainian drone raid on Russia – governor
20 Sep, 2025 14:15
Four people were killed and one more injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on Samara Region in south-western Russia, local governor Vyacheslav Fedorischev has said.
The UAVs targeted fuel and energy facilities in the region early on Saturday, Fedorischev wrote on Russia’s Max messaging platform.
Later in the day, the governor issued another post, saying: “It is with deep sorrow that I report that four people were killed as a result of the overnight attack by enemy drones.”
The region’s best doctors have been treating a person who was wounded in the raid, he said.
The authorities remain in contact with the families of the victims, who will be provided with all necessary assistance, Fedorischev stressed.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Saturday that the country’s air defenses have destroyed 149 Ukrainian drones in the country’s airspace overnight, including 15 in Samara Region.
Kiev has stepped up its use of long-range drones to strike deep inside Russia in recent months as battlefield conditions continue to worsen for Ukrainian troops.
The attacks have targeted energy infrastructure and residential areas, resulting in dozens of civilian deaths and injuries as well as the destruction of property.
Russian officials have accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting civilians, calling such tactics acts of terrorism.
Moscow has conducted its own long-range strikes with drones and missiles in response.
The Russian Defense Ministry maintains that it only targets military-related sites such as Ukrainian troop concentrations, weapons depots and fuel storage facilities.

Trump won’t impose terms on Russia and Ukraine – envoy
19 Sep, 2025 21:07
US President Donald Trump will not force any conditions on either Moscow or Kiev to resume peace negotiations, Washington’s ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker has stated.
Appearing on Fox Business on Friday, the envoy said that the US president will, nevertheless, continue to push for a settlement in the Ukraine conflict.
”President Trump is going to continue to find the leverage and to find the conditions where he can bring both sides and mediate a resolution… [but] he’s not going to set the conditions,” Whitaker said.
“Both sides are going to have to agree to a peace deal,” he added.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump stated that, while possible, a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky would be hard to arrange because “they hate each other” intensely.
The US president also predicted that if the two met, he would “have to do all the talking.”
In an interview to TASS on Tuesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov described the US’ position on the Ukraine conflict under the Trump administration as one coming “from common sense.”
He also accused European NATO nations of attempting to obstruct Washington’s peace efforts.
In stark contrast to his predecessor, Joe Biden, Trump has actively engaged in dialogue with Russia ever since he assumed office in January. Last month, he held a summit with Putin in Alaska.
The US president subsequently pledged to arrange negotiations between Putin and Zelensky.
Earlier this month, the Russian president said he was willing to sit down with Zelensky, suggesting Moscow as a potential venue.
Zelensky stated that he was also ready for such a meeting “without any kind of conditions,” however, he rejected the idea of holding talks in the Russian capital.
Last week, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that negotiations between Moscow and Kiev, of which there have been three rounds to date, had been “paused” for now.

Kremlin replies after Trump says ‘Putin let me down’
19 Sep, 2025 21:04
The “emotional” attitude of US President Donald Trump to the Ukraine peace process is “completely understandable,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.
The US leader has repeatedly expressed his frustration with the state of the process lately, admitting that he had previously believed Ukraine “would be easiest” to resolve given his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“He’s really let me down,” Trump said on Thursday.
Asked for comment on Trump’s remarks, Peskov signaled that Moscow understands his frustration, given the US president’s personal investment in trying to settle the hostilities.
“We assume that the US and President Trump personally maintain their political will and intention to continue their efforts to facilitate a settlement in Ukraine.
Therefore, of course, President Trump is quite emotional, so to speak, about this issue. This is completely understandable,” Peskov told reporters on Friday.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov touched upon Trump’s remarks in an interview with Russia’s Channel One, suggesting his disappointment stems from his business-like approach to politics.
The US president is “a man of action, deals, and business, as he himself constantly emphasizes,” Russia’s top diplomat said.
“When President Trump says he’s disappointed… it’s partially explained by the fact that he wants quick solutions,” Lavrov stated. “In some areas, this may work; in others, it’s unlikely.”
In recent weeks, the US president voiced his displeasure with the lack of progress in negotiations, threatening new sanctions on Russia.
In the past few days, he has repeatedly reaffirmed his willingness to impose more restrictions on Moscow, but urged Washington’s European partners to halt their purchases of Russian oil first.
“I’m willing to do other things, but not when the people that I’m fighting for are buying oil from Russia,” Trump said on Thursday.

Zelensky rejects ‘Korean’ conflict settlement scenario
20 Sep, 2025 14:56
Vladimir Zelensky has rejected the idea of ending the Ukraine conflict with a North and South Korea-style split, and stressed that there may be no final peace agreement signed with Russia.
At a press conference on Friday, he was asked whether he was considering a Korean War-style scenario for ending the Ukraine conflict.
North and South Korea ended active hostilities with an armistice in 1953, but never signed a peace treaty, leaving the two nations de facto at war.
“No one is considering the ‘Korean’, ‘Finnish,’ or any other model,” Zelensky told journalists, according to UNIAN.
“A ceasefire is enough to provide security guarantees. We can’t waste time waiting for a clear agreement to end the war. We need security guarantees beforehand.”
Zelensky noted that French President Emmanuel Macron had argued security guarantees should not wait until the war is over.
“I agree with him that, for instance, a ceasefire is enough to provide security guarantees,” he said.
Macron has increasingly lobbied to deploy “peacekeeping” troops to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire as part of Western Europe’s “coalition of the willing.”
Moscow has categorically rejected any scenario involving NATO countries’ troops being sent to Ukraine.
According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Ukraine and its European backers are “doing everything possible to continue down the path of confrontation and escalating tensions.”
Despite this, Russian President Vladimir Putin remains both “ready and willing to seek a diplomatic settlement” to the Ukraine conflict, Peskov said on Friday.
Earlier this month, Putin said that Moscow will observe any security guarantees agreed on with Ukraine, but insists that they “be drafted both for Russia and Ukraine.”
Moscow has repeatedly said that it sees NATO’s eastward spread, as well as Ukraine’s ambitions to join the US-led military bloc as threats to Russian security.

Russian drones strike oil, transport infrastructure in Chernihiv Oblast
September 20, 2025 7:32 pm
Russian drones reportedly struck a Ukrainian oil depot at a military facility in Bakhmach, Chernihiv Oblast on Sept. 20, Russian Telegram channels reported.
Pro-Russian Telegram media channel Shot posted a video of the reported attack, showing a fire emanating from the depot.
Shot reported that Russian-made Gerans, which are direct copies of Shaheds, drones struck the depot, which is used to deliver fuel to motorized units in Sumy Oblast.
The Kyiv Independent cannot immediately verify the reports.
Ukraine's military has not yet commented on the strike, and no information was available as to the extent of the damage caused.
The head of the Chernihiv City Military Administration, Dmytro Bryzynsky, warned earlier of an attack on the region.
Bryzynsky added that unspecified transport infrastructure was damaged in the strike, making no mention of a blaze at the oil depot.
Bryzynsky said that no casualties were initially reported in the attack. Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine's railway authority, said that a number of trains are delayed due to the attack.
The attack comes just one day after Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukrainian cities, which killed 2 people and injured 36.
According to Ukraine's Air Force, Russia launched 579 drones, 8 ballistic missiles, and 32 cruise missiles, with direct strikes reported in 10 locations across multiple regions.
Ukraine and Russia have continued to trade blows to each others oil and energy infrastructure in recent months, with Kyiv warning of renewed attacks on Ukraine's energy grid in anticipation of the upcoming winter.
Kyiv has also continued to escalate its campaign against Russian oil and gas infrastructure, a key source of Moscow's revenues helping to fuel its all-out invasion of Ukraine.
Ukraine's General Staff said that it had struck two oil refineries in Russia's Saratov and Samara oblasts overnight.

Successful strikes on Russian oil refineries show that we use more drones — President
20.09.2025 14:30
President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the success of strikes on enemy oil refineries indicates that Ukraine has increased its production of drones and can use more of them for attacks.
The President announced this during a conversation with journalists, according to a Ukrinform correspondent.
“Regarding oil refineries: we have drones, we know how to produce them. It all depends on the number of drones we use per day.
I think the results of recent operations show that we have started to use more drones,” Zelensky said.
At the same time, he stressed that the increased number of drones is still insufficient.
“As soon as the number of drones is comparable to that of the Russians, they will feel it in terms of fuel shortages and the number of queues at gas stations.
We are seeing this more and more. A little more is getting through. Today, this is only a financial issue,” the President noted.

According to Zelensky, today the production of long-range drones in Ukraine has reached a level where “everything depends solely on the financing of these weapons.”
As reported by Ukrinform, the Lukoil oil refinery in Volgograd has stopped loading oil and has become the third large refinery in Russia to shut down after a series of Ukrainian drone strikes that began two weeks ago and affected at least seven refineries.

Russian CEO behind Shahed drone supplies found dead in Moscow region
Sat, September 20, 2025 - 19:00
In the Moscow region, the CEO of Umatex Group, whose company supplied materials for Shahed-type drones, was found dead, reports Russian media.
The body of the CEO, Alexander Tyunin, was discovered on the roadside in a village near Moscow. A shotgun and a note were found next to him.
"I did this myself. I have been fighting depression for five years. It keeps getting worse. I have no strength left," the entrepreneur wrote in the note.
The Telegram channel "To Be or" notes that this is the 35th mysterious death of Russian top officials and executives since 2022.
The most commonly reported cause in these cases is "suicide."
The last similar incident involved the former governor of Russia's Kursk region, Roman Starovoit, who shot himself in his car.
He had been accused of failing to defend the region during the Ukrainian Armed Forces' offensive.
What is known about Umatex and drone production
The Ukrainian outlet Militarnyi reports that JSC Khimprom Engineering, better known as Umatex Group, is the only carbon fiber manufacturer in Russia.
Its subsidiary, Alabuga-Fibre, located in the namesake economic zone, supplies materials for the production of strike drones.
"Carbon fiber is a key element in the production of fuselages for long-range drones, providing high strength at extremely low weight," the report states.
The Umatex-owned Alabuga-Fiber plant produces raw materials and sits opposite the main site, where fuselages are glued and drones assembled.
Nearby, another facility, Tatneft Alabuga fiberglass, produces fiberglass fabrics for the composite bodies of Shahed drones.
According to open data, Umatex's enterprises supply about 95% of Russia’s carbon fiber, totaling 1,400–2,000 tons per year.
However, with the expansion of strike drone production, this figure may have grown significantly in recent years.
Notably, on May 9, 2022, Alexander Subbotin, a former top manager at the oil company Lukoil, was found dead in Russia.
Reports say his death followed a session with a shaman.

UN calls on Israel to halt strikes and withdraw from Lebanon
September 20, 2025 01:18:24 pm
The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) called Friday for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to stop launching strikes into Southern Lebanon and to “fully withdraw from Lebanese territory,” following strikes on Thursday night which “endangered peacekeepers and civilians.”
The IDF reportedly warned civilians in Mais al-Jabal, Kfar Tibnit, and Debbin to evacuate their homes.
The IDF stated that its aircraft “struck terrorist targets,” listing the “Commander of Hezbollah’s Sinai Outpost” Ammar Hayel Qutaybani, a “Hezbollah “Radwan Force” terrorist” in Tebnine, and a “Hezbollah vessel used to gather intelligence on IDF troops” off the coast of Naqoura (where UNIFIL’s headquarters are situated).
According to UNIFIL, peacekeepers stationed in Deir Kifa, near Burj Qalawieh, had to move to shelter.
There have been no reports of injuries or fatalities among the peacekeepers.
UNIFIL, a UN peacekeeping mission, called the strikes a violation of Security Council resolution 1701.
Resolution 1701 was unanimously adopted in 2006 to de-escalate tensions between Hezbollah and Israel following the July-August war.
The resolution prescribed “immediate cessation of Hizbollah of all attacks and immediate cessation by Israel of all offensive military operations.”
It also established “full respect for the Blue Line,” a 120-kilometer “line of withdrawal” continuously monitored by UNIFIL.
Any crossing of the Blue Line violates resolution 1701, which UNIFIL then reports to the Security Council.
A cessation of hostilities agreement was also signed by both Israel and Lebanon in November 2024.
The agreement states that the Lebanese government will “prevent Hezbollah … from carrying out any operations against Israel” and similarly “Israel will not carry out any offensive military operations against Lebanese targets.”
UNIFIL stated that “continued escalation puts the hard-fought progress the parties have made to restore stability at risk” and that it would “observe IDF activities in the mission’s area of operation.”
Nawaf Salam, the Prime Minister of Lebanon, called on X for the “international community … to exert maximum pressure on Israel to immediately cease its attacks and return to the mechanism, the Cessation of Hostilities agreement, and its obligations.”
UNIFIL was created in 1978 by resolutions 425 and 426, to ensure Israel’s full withdrawal from Lebanon.
UNIFIL has warned Israel, Lebanon and Hezbollah about violations of resolution 1701 multiple times.

Over half of Gaza City’s million residents have evacuated in recent weeks — IDF
September 20, 2025 7:33 pm
More than half of the approximately one million Palestinians residing in Gaza City have evacuated to the Strip’s south since late August, according to fresh IDF estimates.
Ahead of an ongoing offensive against Hamas, the IDF ordered Palestinians in all areas of Gaza City to evacuate immediately to an Israeli-designated humanitarian zone in the Strip’s south.

Hamas fires on UN team, steals baby formula in Gaza: ‘Trying to create crisis narrative’
September 20, 2025 09:30
Israel said Saturday that Hamas terrorists opened fire on a United Nations team and blocked the opening of a new humanitarian corridor in southern Gaza, accusing the group of deliberately worsening the situation for civilians.
According to the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), UN workers were preparing a new road to allow aid trucks to travel from the Kerem Shalom crossing into a designated humanitarian zone when armed Hamas operatives attacked.
The gunmen fired directly at the UN team, forced them out, and then used a stolen UN vehicle to erect a sand barricade to prevent future aid deliveries, COGAT said.
The new route was set to open within days as part of Israel’s plan to expand humanitarian relief, including food, medical supplies, tents and shelter equipment for families who fled Gaza City and moved south for safety.
Israel pointed to the incident as part of a broader pattern. Earlier this week, UNICEF reported that armed men hijacked four aid trucks carrying baby formula at gunpoint, leaving 2,700 infants without vital nutrition.
Israel allows the entry of baby formula and other humanitarian goods, but accuses Hamas of stealing them to resell for profit.
“Hamas proves again and again it has no interest in the welfare of Gaza’s residents,” said Maj. Gen. Ghassan Alian, head of COGAT.
“Even when Israel works with the UN and international groups to expand humanitarian aid, Hamas desperately tries to sabotage it. They abandon the people they claim to represent in order to ensure their own survival.”

Hamas rebuilds Gaza City tunnels, IDF halts underground op. fearing hostages present
SEPTEMBER 20, 2025 18:20
Hamas has rebuilt much of its network of underground tunnels in Gaza City, a security source told N12 on Friday.
The IDF has reportedly now paused some underground operations, suspecting that hostages may be held in the tunnel shafts and military actions may endanger their lives.
The tunnels have added to the growing list of challenges faced by the military in the densely populated Gaza City, according to the report.
Hamas has been accelerating the process of booby-trapping buildings with explosives.
Once a building used by Hamas is destroyed, the terrorists relocate to a residential structure and commandeer the floors of apartment buildings occupied by Gazan civilians.
Officials estimated to the Israeli news site last week that as many as 10,000 terrorists were hiding out in Gaza City.
Hostage safety fears as IDF proceeds with Gaza City operations
The terror group has openly admitted to holding hostages in the city, and threatened that military action there would endanger the lives of those being held.
“Your hostages are scattered within the neighborhoods of Gaza City, and we will not be concerned for their lives as long as Netanyahu has decided to kill them," Hamas’s al-Qassam Brigades said in a statement published on Thursday.
"The initiation of this criminal operation and its expansion means that you will not retrieve any hostage, neither alive nor dead.”
The controversial decision to proceed with operations in Gaza City has been criticized by a number of hostage families, who fear that such operations may cement the fate of the 20 living hostages.
Despite their anxieties, US President Donald Trump defended the move on Friday, claiming the hostages “might be [at greater risk].
They also may be freed because of that…War, a lot of strange things happen. A lot of results take place that you never think were going to happen.”

“Trump admin. should be helping us get the truth out,” Moskowitz' takeaway from UAP hearing
Sep 20, 2025
Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) — Member, Congressional UAP Caucus; Judiciary Committee
Ask a Pol asks:
Where do you want the congressional UFO investigation to go next?
Key Moskowitz:
“The Trump administration should be helping us get the truth out.
Get more information out of these places that have this information,” Rep. Jared Moskowitz exclusively tells Ask a Pol. “More whistleblower protection, right?”
So you feel like with Republicans in the majority, they have the relationships, like with Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard…?
“Well, it's not just that. They've talked about releasing these files, releasing those files and we've seen some files they don't want to release,” Moskowitz says.
“They've talked about all that stuff.”
Caught our ear:
Do you think the hearing was good to put these questions out there?
“Yes, yes!” Moskowitz tells us. “We need more of them.”

The conference will feature Asgardia’s leaders and global experts discussing the ethical, legal, and cultural foundations of humanity’s expansion into space.
At the heart of the event lies the Galactic Prime Directive, a pioneering piece of legislation designed to provide a universal ethical framework for interstellar conduct.
As presented by Mr John Fine, Asgardia’s Member of Parliament, Chair of the Trade and Commerce Committee and head of the Legislative Merit Review Group, the directive seeks to establish standards of non-interference, cultural preservation, sustainable reciprocity, and scientific excellence in all future human and extraterrestrial interactions.
This directive sets universal standards for all interactions with extraterrestrial life and celestial bodies, ensuring that our expansion into space is marked by integrity, scientific excellence, and respect for the unknown.
The programme will bring together prominent experts, including:
Professor Mark Beer (UK) – Minister of Justice of Asgardia, internationally recognised lawyer, and global authority on law, technology, and governance.
Dr Sara E. v. Clark (USA) – Asgardia’s Member of Parliament, Integrative wellness leader, educator, and cross-cultural health strategist.
Mr Nigel Evans (UK) – Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Asgardia, veteran UK parliamentarian, and international diplomatic leader.
Dr Brian Froelke (USA) – Asgardia’s Member of Parliament, emergency medicine physician, disaster medicine expert, and EMS Medical Director.
Topics to be addressed include:
How the Prime Directive aligns with international space law.
Ethical management of health crises across civilisations.
Balancing diplomacy, science, and cultural preservation.
Preparing emergency response systems for interstellar missions.
The event will conclude with a live Q&A session, inviting the global audience to participate directly in shaping the discussion.
The conference is about laying the foundation for humanity’s real responsibilities as it ventures further into the cosmos.
Tune in today at 13:00 UTC and take part in this historic discussion.
