What makes a country?

The residents (let's say Jewish, but in reality 20% are Islamic Arab)

The people inside the border have a contiguous historical record in the area.

By whatever means, they've managed to raise an army and keep invading armies out to protect "their borders". This is how countries have been formed and maintain themselves.

Natural law says residents manage to consolidate power and live on a geographic region and fend off invading armies….poof! they have a country!

So, what gives?

Natural law for one and not the other?
