Former Philippines president charged with ‘crimes against humanity’

Rodrigo Duterte’s uncompromising “war on drugs” led to thousands of deaths, ICC prosecutors claim

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has charged former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte with “crimes against humanity.” The prosecutors have alleged that his ruthless war on drugs resulted in at least 76 killings, and have claimed that the real death toll is much greater.

The redacted 15-page charge sheet, dated July 4 but released only on Monday, alleges Duterte is responsible for murder during his time as Davao City mayor and as president, including 19 killings from 2013–2016, 14 “high-value target” deaths in 2016–2017, and 43 killings during broader “clearance” operations through 2018. Prosecutors say thousands more were killed in the operations.

The ICC, however, has faced international criticism and accusations of bias over perceived failures to address atrocities committed by Western countries. The United States, China, and Russia are not members, and the court has often struggled to enforce arrest warrants because it relies on state cooperation.

Duterte, now 80, launched his so-called “war on drugs” after his election in 2016, vowing that he would eliminate suspected drug dealers and urging the broader public to kill drug addicts. The harsh crackdown led to the deaths of an estimated 30,000 people, mostly urban poor.

According to the Human Rights Watch, a significant portion of the killings was committed by police at the instigation of the Duterte government, although the former president denied having approved extrajudicial murder. At the same time, Duterte admitted that he had kept a “death squad” of criminals to crack down on other gangs while serving as a mayor.

The ICC issued an arrest order for Duterte on March 7, and the Philippine authorities detained the former president days later and surrendered him to The Hague. The move came despite the South Asian country withdrawing from the Rome Statute, which regulates the ICC, in 2019.

In a 2021 ruling, the Supreme Court of the Philippines insisted that the country still has an obligation to cooperate in the ICC proceedings.

Duterte’s legal team argues the ICC lacks jurisdiction after the withdrawal and has sought interim release on health grounds.

Russia Mocks Trump's 'Paper Tiger' Remark, Says Ukraine Cannot Take Back Territory

Russia has mocked President Trump for being too much under the influence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's perspective on the ongoing war, after on Tuesday the American leader stated he thinks Ukraine is in "a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form." Trump had also called Russia a "paper tiger".

The Kremlin on Wednesday made clear its military would press on with the "special military operation" because it sees "no alternative" - and after Trump-backed peace efforts have gone nowhere.

"Mr. Trump heard about what’s happening from Zelensky’s perspective. And, apparently, at this point, that version is what led to the assessment we heard," Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with RBC Radio.

Russia will press on in its "special military operation to ensure our national interests… We are doing this for the present and the future of the country. For many generations to come." There is "no alternative" based on the precarious situation Russia found itself in, he expressed, and likely had constant NATO expansion on his mind.

He then stressed that Moscow is calling for the world's attention to understand "root causes" of the war in Ukraine. "Putin repeatedly tried and offered to resolve those root causes," Peskov said.

He followed up in a separate press briefing by saying it is a "mistake" to think Ukraine can take back territory currently under the control of Russian troops.

Trump's rosy assessment of the state of the battlefield, voiced firmly from Kiev's perspective, ignores what even mainstream media has been openly admitting for much of the past year - that Ukrainian forces are crumbling amid manpower shortages, ammo and weapons supply problems, and bad strategy and leadership from commanders.

Over 20 wounded, including 2 seriously, in Houthi drone attack on Eilat

Unmanned aircraft explodes in shopping area after IDF fails to down it despite firing two Iron Dome interceptors; incident comes days after Houthi drone smashed into hotel in resort city

Over 20 people were wounded on Wednesday evening after a drone launched by the Houthis in Yemen exploded in Eilat, days after another smashed into a hotel in the Red Sea resort city.

Medics reported that among the injured were two men, ages 60 and 26, listed in serious condition, along with a 30-year-old who was moderately hurt and 19 others with light wounds.

Most of the wounded were hit by shrapnel, with the Israeli Air Force dispatching two helicopters to evacuate those more severely hurt to Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba. Most of the injured were treated at Eilat’s Yoseftal Medical Center, the country’s smallest general hospital.

Footage from the attack showed the drone impact near a hotel in a shopping area.

The military acknowledged that attempts to intercept the drone had failed, with two Iron Dome interceptor missiles fired at the unmanned aircraft, while noting that sirens had sounded a warning of an attack “according to protocol.”

“The Houthi terrorists refuse to learn from Iran, Lebanon, and Gaza, and will learn the hard way,” Defense Minister Israel Katz wrote on X after the attack. “Whoever harms Israel will be harmed sevenfold.”

Protesters at airport rally against Netanyahu ahead of New York trip

Hundreds of protesters are gathered at Ben Gurion Airport’s arrivals hall to demonstrate against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he takes off for the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Protesters rally both against the government and for a deal to bring hostages home, waving Israeli flags and yellow banners. Signs rail against Netanyahu’s nomination of David Zini as head of the Shin Bet security service, amid concerns from activists that he will act as a rubber stamp for the premier.

Trump presented comprehensive plan to end Gaza war in UN meeting with Muslim leaders

Participating countries issue position paper welcoming proposal, while stressing they oppose any Israeli occupation of Gaza, displacement of Palestinians or annexation of West Bank

US President Donald Trump presented his plan for ending the Gaza war, releasing remaining hostages and rehabilitating the Strip under non-Hamas rule during a multilateral meeting with the leaders of eight Arab and Muslim countries, two Arab diplomats briefed on the sit-down told The Times of Israel on Wednesday.

Trump also vowed that he would not allow Israel to annex the West Bank, a source at the sit-down and a second source briefed on the matter told The Times of Israel, confirming a report in Politico.

Parts of the plan presented by Trump at the Tuesday meeting are based on a proposal crafted by former UK prime minister Tony Blair, which was revealed by The Times of Israel last week.

While the Blair plan focuses on the post-war management of Gaza, the plan presented by Trump also outlines how the war itself would end, envisioning a ceasefire of several weeks during which all of the remaining 48 hostages would be released, one of the Arab diplomats said.

The participating countries were briefed on the US proposal ahead of time and presented a position paper that welcomed Trump’s plan, a source familiar with the matter said.

The paper’s four key points were: welcoming the proposal for a comprehensive end to the war in Gaza; stressing the importance of bringing back the hostages, ending the war and allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza; committing to be part of a peaceful solution for the region, based on Trump’s vision; and calling out continued Israeli strikes on countries in the region, including the recent attack on Hamas chiefs in Qatar.

The position paper also said the countries reject continued Israeli military operations in Gaza, an Israeli occupation of Gaza and the establishment of settlements there, forcibly displacing Palestinians from Gaza and preventing those who left from returning, Israeli annexation of the West Bank, and steps that violate the status quo at Jerusalem holy sites.

Less than 8 hours ago Israel sent another swarm of drones into international waters to attack the Global Sumud Flotilla. They targeted both the sails and the bodies of 10 vessels. The flotilla is still over 500 nautical miles from Gaza’s shoreline.

They are literally firing on boats full of peace activists… in front of the whole world…. giving exactly zero fckks what anyone thinks or says.

But please tell me more about how they would “never hurt one of their allies.” These psychos would mow down their own grandmothers if they thought it might serve their purposes that day.
