Don’t forget. Donald Trump was inaugurated in January 2017, and the Five Eyes intelligence chiefs’ gathering at Millbrook (near Queenstown) with James Comey and Mike Pompeo took place in April 2017. Only a couple of months after Trump took office.

Donald Trump won the 2016 U.S. presidential election on 8 November 2016.

John Key announced his resignation as New Zealand Prime Minister on 5 December 2016. That’s only about four weeks after Trump’s election victory. He formally stepped down a week later, on 12 December 2016.

John Key and Barack Obama developed a very warm relationship during their overlapping time in office. They played golf together at least twice:

Hawaii (December 2014): Obama invited Key to join him for a round in Honolulu, along with White House aides.

Northland, New Zealand (March 2018): After leaving office, Obama visited New Zealand and spent several days as a guest of Key, including a golf game at Kauri Cliffs.

So while Key wasn’t a “lifelong” buddy, he was regarded internationally as one of Obama’s closer personal friends among world leaders and definitely a golfing mate.
