ICE arrests Des Moines schools superintendent Ian Andre Roberts, says he's a 'criminal illegal alien' with a 'prior weapons charge'
On Friday U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested the superintendent of the Des Moines, Iowa, public school system, Dr. Ian Andre Roberts, and accused him of being a “criminal illegal alien” with a “prior weapons charge.”
“This suspect was arrested in possession of a loaded weapon in a vehicle provided by Des Moines Public Schools after fleeing federal law enforcement,” Sam Olson, director of enforcement and removal operations in ICE’s St. Paul, Minn., office, said in a press release. “How this illegal alien was hired without work authorization, a final order of removal, and a prior weapons charge is beyond comprehension and should alarm the parents of that school district.”
ICE said in its press release that Roberts, a former Olympic middle-distance runner, was “in possession of a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash and a fixed-blade hunting knife” when he was apprehended, adding that “he sped away” after officers approached him. A senior ICE official told Fox News that Roberts soon abandoned his vehicle and was “found in a brushy area 200 yards away with the help of an Iowa State Police K9.”
Progressive groups and lawmakers in Iowa lamented Roberts’s arrest, with Democratic state Rep. Larry McBurney of Des Moines calling it “an outright disgrace” and accusing ICE of treating "our schools … as political battlegrounds for federal overreach."
“The idea of ICE raiding our schools and removing a highly respected leader from our community is a stain on Iowa and on America,” McBurney wrote on Facebook. “It undermines trust, threatens stability, and sends a chilling message to educators and families across the state.”
McBurney later deleted the post.
The Directors Council, an umbrella group of several nonprofits that serve Des Moines's Black community, said in a statement that “Dr. Roberts has been a trusted partner, a dedicated advocate for equity, and an unwavering supporter of families and youth in Polk County,” adding that his contributions to “the wider community are immeasurable, and we stand with him during this uncertain moment."

Robert B. Barnett — the iconic Williams & Connolly lawyer for 50 years referred to in news stories for decades as "powerhouse attorney" — has died in Washington at 79.
Friends called him "the doorman to Washington's revolving door," as noted 25 years ago in a New York Times profile headlined, "The Kingpin of Washington Book Deals."
He was "Bob" in conversation, but he always wanted to be "Robert" in our stories. When he was serving up a scoop about one of his famous authors — Bill and Hillary Clinton, George and Laura Bush, Barack and Michelle Obama — he'd always ask gently, but firmly, to be mentioned.
And by gum, we always mentioned him!
Between the lines: During my lunch at the Bombay Club today, I got lots of texts about Barnett's passing — it will please him that his departure is a big deal. He and his wife, Rita Braver of CBS News, were ubiquitous on the Washington scene.
Barnett was at it till the end: On Aug. 22, I sent him a fall book preview, and he shot back another list that "may be better" — probably mentioned more of his people. I emailed him a summer's-end tidbit about TV news on Aug. 31, and he wrote back 18 minutes later: "Where are you, Mr. Allen?"
Noah Bressner, orchestrator of Axios AM, texted me when he saw the news: "I don't think we ever ran a book item where I didn't get an email after with just 'thank you, Noah' in the subject line."
Barnett was close to longtime AP publishing-industry reporter Hillel Italie, who writes in the obit that hit the wire this afternoon:
