States Sue HHS Over Order To Remove 'Gender Identity' In K-12 Sex Education

A coalition of 16 states and the District of Columbia is suing the Trump administration to keep materials they say “recognize and affirm gender identity” in their federally funded K-12 sex education programs.

The lawsuit, filed Friday in the U.S. District Court in Oregon, is co-led by the attorneys general of Minnesota, Oregon, and Washington.

At issue is an order from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that prohibits what it calls “gender ideology” in lessons supported by two federal grants: the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) and the Title V Sexual Risk Avoidance Education (SRAE) program. Both are used to teach teenagers about preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Citing President Donald Trump’s order that no federal dollar should go into indoctrinating children in “radical, anti-American ideologies,” the HHS in August demanded that 46 states and territories remove references to gender identity from teaching materials or risk penalties, including the suspension or termination of funding. The deadline for them to comply with the conditions is Oct. 27.

“Federal funds will not be used to poison the minds of the next generation or advance dangerous ideological agendas,” Andrew Gradison, acting assistant secretary for HHS’s Administration for Children and Families, said at that time. “The Trump Administration will ensure that PREP reflects the intent of Congress, not the priorities of the left.”

The suing coalition argued that the order violated Congress’s spending power, and that terminating the funding through these programs will result in a loss of at least $35 million and will “harm the very populations Congress intended to help.” The coalition members also argued that compliance would conflict with their own laws and policies requiring “inclusive” sex education curricula.

For example, Washington’s K-12 health standards on “self-identity” outline how kindergarteners should “understand there are many ways to express gender.” Oregon similarly requires teachers to use “inclusive materials, language, and strategies that [recognize] different sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expression.”

In First, Zelensky Confirms Israel Sent Patriot Missile Battery To Ukraine, With More On Way

On Saturday Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed for the first time ever that Israel has supplied his country with a Patriot air defense system. He indicated it has already been operational for several weeks.

"The system has been installed," Zelensky said while boasting that at least two more batteries from Israel are expected to arrive at some point in the fall.

It was a surprised announcement, given that for over three years of the Ukraine war, Israel has been persistent in resisting calls to send arms to Israel, given it is more concerned with keeping its delicate relations with Moscow positive. Until now it had only sent non-lethal and humanitarian aid.

Also, Russia has long maintained a military presence on the Mediterranean, along Syria's coast. But times have changed, and Russia could be packing up its Syrian naval and air bases, given the December overthrow of its ally Assad and the Jolani regime being installed in Damascus. Moscow is suddenly left with less leverage in the region, and has pivoted to growing closer with Iran, which has supplied it with kamikaze drones used in Ukraine.

It likely rubbed Tel Aviv the wrong way seeing Russia deepen its economic, defense, and technological cooperation with Iran, so in light of all of this it has softened its resistance to arming Ukraine.

Back in June, Israel's ambassador to Ukraine Michael Brodsky was the first to let slip that Patriot systems would protect Ukrainian cities, which was a risk given it has angered Russia. Yet the Ukrainian government had never officially acknowledged this.

But to get US-supplied Patriots to Ukraine, there's been some trickery and serious diplomatic maneuvering involved in order to make it appear all very 'indirect' - in part to prevent Israel from provoking too much wrath out of Moscow.

Telegram’s Durov claims French intelligence tried to blackmail him over Moldovan election

The messenger’s co-founder’s comments come as the post-Soviet republic is heading to the polling stations

Writing on X on Sunday, Durov said the approach came about a year ago, while he was under judicial supervision in France following his arrest at a Paris airport. He claimed that intelligence services contacted him through an intermediary and asked Telegram to remove a number of Moldovan channels before a presidential vote.

According to St Petersburg native Durov, Telegram did delete some flagged channels that clearly violated its own policies. But he said the intermediary later relayed a more troubling message: French intelligence had offered to “say good things” to the judge in charge of his case in exchange for wider cooperation.

“This was unacceptable on several levels,” Durov wrote, adding that if the agency did contact the judge, it would amount to interference in the judicial process — and if it didn’t, it meant exploiting his legal jeopardy to influence political developments abroad.

Durov said that shortly afterward, Telegram received a second list of “problematic” Moldovan channels. Unlike the first batch, he insisted, nearly all of these accounts were legitimate and fully compliant with Telegram’s rules.

Their only common trait, he said, was that they voiced political positions disliked by the Moldovan and French governments. “We refused to act on this request,” he wrote.

The allegations come as Moldovans head to the polls in a high-stakes parliamentary election. President Maia Sandu’s pro-EU Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) is facing off against the Patriotic Electoral Bloc (BEP), which campaigns for Moldova’s constitutional neutrality and accuses the government of suppressing dissent.

In recent weeks, election officials barred two opposition parties over alleged foreign funding, adding to a list that already included the banned Victory Bloc and the dissolved SOR Party.

Opposition groups accuse Sandu of tilting the playing field by restricting polling stations in Russia, where hundreds of thousands of Moldovans live, while opening hundreds across the EU — many in small towns. They also point to the closure of dozens of media outlets critical of the government.

Commenting on Durov’s claims, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the revelations confirmed what Moscow had long alleged. “The West operates without conscience on all fronts,” she said.

Durov, who also holds French citizenship in addition to his primary Russian, was arrested in August 2024 and charged with complicity in crimes linked to Telegram users, including extremism and child abuse. He was later released on €5 million bail but placed under judicial supervision. He said the French attempt to link that case to Moldovan politics was “a pattern we have also observed elsewhere, including in Romania.”

Durov insisted Telegram would not comply with political censorship. “Telegram is committed to freedom of speech and will not remove content for political reasons. I will continue to expose every attempt to pressure Telegram into censoring our platform,” he wrote.

The Russian president “will be glad to meet” his American counterpart, Dmitry Peskov has said

“This invitation still stands,” Peskov told TASS on Sunday when asked whether Moscow’s position had changed. “Putin is ready and will be glad to meet President Trump. It will then all depend on Trump’s decision.”

For months, Washington insisted that Kiev would need to give up on certain territorial claims for a US-mediated peace deal to move forward. This week however, Trump made a U-turn, claiming that Kiev could defeat Russia and calling Moscow a “paper tiger.”

Peskov had earlier responded to Trump’s remarks by insisting that Russia has traditionally been seen as a bear and that there is “no such thing as a paper bear.” He also dismissed Trump’s claims about the Russian economy by stating that it had adapted to the ongoing conflict and unprecedented Western sanctions even if it does face certain “problems.”

The Kremlin spokesman still maintained that Putin “highly values” Trump’s efforts to mediate, while describing their relationship as “warm.”

Speaking at the White House earlier this week, Trump stated he would not describe Russia as a “paper tiger” again and was not willing to use the term against “anybody” at all.

Gaza clans struck after refusing Israeli offers to govern Gaza, undermine Hamas – report

Israeli intelligence reportedly approached powerful Gaza clans with offers of support in exchange for turning against Hamas. Their refusal was followed by deadly airstrikes from Israel.

Israeli officials attempted to recruit major clans in the Gaza Strip to form local governing bodies in certain areas in an attempt to reduce Hamas’s grip on the territory, according to a report published in the Saudi-owned Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper and security officials in Gaza City.

The report, citing unnamed security officials and local sources in Gaza City, stated that Shin Bet operatives approached leaders of the Bakr and Durmush clans with proposals of support in exchange for cooperation.

The reported offers included intelligence sharing, taking up arms against Hamas, and assisting in political efforts intended to prevent a future Israeli withdrawal and hinder the formation of a Palestinian authority in Gaza.

Following the clans’ refusal to participate, airstrikes reportedly struck both occupied and evacuated homes belonging to members of the families. In one incident, 30 members of the Durmush clan were reported killed in an airstrike in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood, with another 20 said to be trapped under the rubble. A separate strike on a home in the southern part of the al-Shati refugee camp reportedly killed six members of the Bakr clan and wounded 11 others.

According to the report, this was not the first such attempt. Previous efforts to arm local elements collapsed after Hamas targeted and killed individuals who had engaged with Israel. An Israeli official at the time was quoted as calling the initiative a “Shin Bet scheme.”
