That's actually a gross mistranslation.

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

In Biblical context:

Principalities = Government

Rulers = Edomite Pharisees/Kings

Powers = Ruling powers, Synagogue/Rome

Rulers of Darkness of THIS WORLD: A Biblical WORLD is an ERA or Period of time, usually 2000 years.

Rulers of Darkness = Synagogue of Satan

Spiritual Wickedness = Satanists

human rulers like the Pharisees (religious leaders) and the Herodian kings (political rulers) are described elsewhere in the Bible as exercising authority over the Jewish people, sometimes in opposition to God’s purposes.The Pharisees were Jewish religious leaders who held significant influence over religious and social life in Judea, often depicted as opposing Jesus (e.g., Matthew 23). The Herodian dynasty, including Herod the Great (Matthew 2) and his sons like Herod Antipas (Luke 23), were Idumean (Edomite) rulers appointed by Rome to govern Judea and surrounding regions. They were called "king of the Jews" or rulers of Judah in a political sense, but their authority was often seen as illegitimate or oppressive by many Jews due to their non-Israelite heritage and alignment with Roman interests.

Human Rulers Influenced by Spiritual Principalities: Some Christian interpretations hold that human authorities can be influenced by or aligned with spiritual "principalities and powers" (Ephesians 6:12). The Pharisees and Herodians, by opposing Jesus and His message, could be seen as earthly agents of spiritual forces resisting God’s kingdom. For example, Jesus’ conflicts with the Pharisees (e.g., Matthew 23:13-36) and Herodians (Mark 12:13-17) highlight their opposition to His teachings, which could align with the broader spiritual battle against "principalities."

Herodians as Edomites: The Herodian dynasty’s Idumean (Edomite) background is significant. In biblical history, Edomites were descendants of Esau, often portrayed as adversaries of Israel (e.g., Obadiah 1:10-14). Herod’s rule, sanctioned by Rome, was viewed by some Jews as a betrayal of God’s covenant with Israel, especially since the title "king of the Jews" was later applied to Jesus (Matthew 2:2, 27:11). The Israelites in Christ, by preaching the Kingdom of God, were challenging both the spiritual and earthly powers that upheld oppressive or false authority, including Herod’s rule.

Preaching Against False Authority: Jesus and His followers preached the Kingdom of God (Matthew 4:17, Acts 1:3), which stood in contrast to both the religious legalism of the Pharisees and the political compromise of the Herodians. This preaching could be seen as a confrontation with the systems they represented, which might be indirectly linked to spiritual "principalities" if one views these rulers as tools of satanic opposition to God’s plan (John 8:44, where Jesus calls some religious leaders children of the devil).
