Revealed: Scott Morrison’s big secret ‘handshake’ on sacking by Tourism Australia

The political career of Scott Morrison was built on punching down at welfare recipients. Yet, in a bitter twist of irony, the architect of the pernicious Robodebt scheme was himself the beneficiary of a massive, secret overpayment when sacked as managing director of Tourism Australia in 2006.

Newly released documents, finally brought to light after a four-year Freedom of Information (FOI) battle, reveal that Scott Morrison was, according to the Remuneration Tribunal, overpaid by up to $212,000 in a “handshake” severance deal designed to facilitate his swift and quiet exit.

While Morrison later launched his infamous Robodebt “welfare cop” blitz a decade later – fronting the media straight-faced determined to crack down on rorters and those that had been allegedly overpaid – the highly inflated severance payment he himself received was never widely reported.

The FOI documents expose the hypocrisy at the heart of the matter: how the political class take care of their own while the innocent are fair game to be hunted, harassed and bullied. Morrison’s own windfall, paid out to ensure a “certainty and seamless” separation from the public service, was never pursued. No “welfare cop” was sent to his door.

Minister Fran Bailey initiates Scomo’s sacking

The move to sack Scott Morrison from his post as Managing Director of Tourism Australia (TA) began with a single, decisive phone call in the last days of July 2006. It followed the “Where the bloody hell are you” campaign. New documents detailing the crisis – specifically the minutes and papers of Board Meeting No. 18, which spanned three days – reveal the machinations around his highly paid exit.

The sequence of events was swift and brutal. According to the board minutes, then Tourism Minister, Fran Bailey, who had reportedly clashed repeatedly with Morrison during his tenure, rang TA Chair Tim Fischer to deliver the message: she and the government had officially “lost confidence” in Morrison.

In response, the board sought a political quick fix—a strategy that led directly to the non-compliant severance deal.

Fischer wasted no time. On the morning of Thursday, July 27, he contacted Morrison to relay the Minister’s message.

The documents reveal Fischer made “seven points in relation to the matter” to Morrison. What those seven points entailed are not recorded in the documents. The message, however, was clear: “as a consequence an amicable ‘agreed separation’ should be sought.”

'We may need to act again': Senior IDF official warns against renewed Iranian threat

“Iran took a heavy blow from the IDF," the official added. "It knows very well the scope of the damage it suffered. It understands the meaning of the damage and Israel’s capabilities.”

Israel is preparing for several scenarios, including the possibility of another strike against Iran, a senior IDF official told Maariv on Monday.

Regarding the Gaza front, the official said the IDF is doing everything to secure the best possible conditions for a ceasefire and a hostage deal. “We are monitoring what is happening across the Middle East and in Iran and are preparing for a variety of scenarios and options; one of them is that we may need to act again against Iran.”

Earlier on state television, former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Mohsen Rezaei issued a string of threats against Israel and the United States.

Rezaei warned that Iran would enter a war with the United States if Israel carried out another attack against it, and said Tehran would not accept negotiations with Western countries that would give Israel time to prepare or strengthen its position.

Rezaei struck a darker tone in his remarks, saying that “if the war lasts two months, today there would be nothing left of Israel."

“The Israelis want to try their military luck against Iran again. If that happens, we will use all our forces, we will change our red lines, and things will happen that are not right for me to say now," Razei added.

The "Lost Tribes" Found

One of the most remarkable developments in the extreme right in the United States in the past few decades has been the rise of an obscure religious ideology known as Christian Identity. Penetrating existing racist and anti-Semitic groups and movements, it has inflamed their bigotry with religious fervor and also sparked the creation of many new groups. Adherents have committed hate crimes, bombings and other acts of terrorism. Identity's current influence ranges from Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazi groups to the anti-government militia and sovereign citizen movements-yet most Americans are unaware that it even exists.

Christian Identity's origins can be traced back to the nineteenth century in Great Britain, where a small circle of religious thinkers advanced the idea, known as British-Israelism or Anglo-Israelism, that modern Europeans were biologically descended from the ancient Israelites of the Old Testament-specifically, from the "Lost Tribes" scattered by invasions of Hittites, Assyrians and Babylonians. The Lost Tribes had purportedly made their way to Europe, and from them descended the modern European nationalities.

These peculiar views-arrived at through creative interpretation of scripture, language, and history-never became widely popular. According to Michael Barkun, the leading historian of Christian Identity, the British-Israel movement in Great Britain peaked in the 1920s with approximately five thousand adherents. Although eccentric, British-Israelites seem to have had no ambitious political agenda or animus, and were probably no more racist or anti-Semitic than the mainstream of Western culture at that time.

By the late 19th century, British-Israelite doctrines began to migrate to the United States; they had a particular appeal to some of the many Americans who believed that the country had a special destiny in God's eyes. Kotek told reporters Saturday afternoon that she awoke Saturday morning to President Donald's Trump's announcement on social media that he will send "all necessary Troops" into Portland in order to protect U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities from "domestic terrorists."

Kotek said she was attempting to understand Trump's rationale, saying his view of Portland was based on "information that is not accurate today," and though the city does have protests, they have remained peaceful, not like the ones in 2020. Trump also claimed that there were elements of "insurrection," which Kotek denied.

When 230 delegates representing Jewish communities in 32 countries met in Geneva, Switzerland, in August 1936 to establish the World Jewish Congress, the danger was clear and present.

Throughout the war, the WJC actively lobbied the Allied governments to grant visas to Jewish refugees from Europe and to ensure the restoration of Jewish minority rights in areas liberated by the Allied forces. In April 1945, the WJC managed to obtain the liberation of 4,500 inmates from the women's concentration camp at Ravensbrück through direct negotiations with a top Nazi leader.

In the aftermath of World War II, the WJC undertook efforts to rebuild Jewish communities in Europe, provided assistance to displaced persons and Shoah survivors, pushed for the indemnification of victims by Germany, and advocated for the punishment of Nazi leaders who committed crimes against humanity.

In 1951, WJC President Nahum Goldmann established the Conference of Material Claims Against Germany to handle reparation claims. A year later, the Luxembourg Agreement was signed with West Germany. Thanks to this agreement, almost 300,000 Jewish Holocaust survivors have received a total of US103.57лв billion in compensation and pension payments from Germany over the past six decades.

The World Jewish Congress also successfully lobbied the United Nations and governments to support the establishment of the State of Israel. After 1948, the WJC focused its attention on the plight of Jewish refugees in Arab countries and also drew international attention to the plight of Jews in the Soviet Union, who were ultimately granted permission to move to Israel or to remain in their communities, if they wished, and to practice and express their religion freely.

Under the leadership of Edgar M. Bronfman, who served as WJC president from 1979 to 2007, the WJC exposed the Nazi past of Austrian President, and UN Secretary General, Kurt Waldheim. During the 1990’s, the Congress successfully lobbied for the restitution of assets of Holocaust victims held in so-called ‘dormant’ bank accounts in Switzerland and elsewhere, and it ensured that they were returned to their rightful owners, or that adequate compensation was paid. Commissions were set up in 17 nations to investigate Holocaust-era assets, including looted art, and the funds recovered have been used to support a multitude of programs worldwide.

The WJC also fought for justice for forced laborers – both Jewish and non-Jewish – whose agonizing hardship had gone uncompensated for decades, resulting in the setting up of a US8.63лв billion fund by Germany in 2001.
