Goodbye to the $7,500 EV tax credit. What’s that mean for EV prices?

By Chris Isidore, CNN

Updated: 3:08 PM EDT, Mon September 29, 2025

Sales of electric vehicles in the United States are almost certain to tumble when the $7,500 federal tax credit for EV buyers expires on October 1. But where prices go is less certain.

The tax credit, passed by the Biden administration in 2022 to support EVs, is going away Wednesday as part of President Donald Trump’s broad spending and tax bill. The loss will cut into demand for EVs, which means prices in real terms will immediately rise — a concept not lost on the many consumers who rushed to buy EVs in August and September.

That surge could result in plunging sales in the final three months of the year. As a result, automakers are weighing where to set sticker prices and incentive levels to maintain demand, which could lead to lower EV prices. But it’s not clear how much total savings the changes will provide, and likely won’t make up for the money lost from the end of the tax credit.

Automakers either didn’t respond to CNN’s request for comment on their pricing plans or said they would monitor market conditions.

But history can be a guide. In 2019, when a previous version of the EV tax credit was phased out for Tesla and General Motors because both hit a prescribed sales target, those two automakers responded by cutting prices.

EV sales have been growing steadily for years, and at a much faster pace than traditional gas-powered cars. US EV sales in 2024 rose 7% to 1.6 million, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), more than three times as fast as the 2% for non-electric passenger vehicles.

But sales of EVs in the United States began to slow earlier this year, rising only 1.5% during the first six months, according to Cox Automotive. That had prompted automakers to offer attractive deals, especially over lease terms.

With the tax credit loss, even more attractive offers are likely on the way, predicted Ivan Drury, director of insights at car buying site Edmunds.

“If you already can’t sell the vehicles at current prices, there’s no way you are going to sell them at today’s prices with this credit going by the wayside,” he said.

Drury believes the price relief will either come through a lower sticker price, or better financing terms and cash-back offers for buyers.

Automakers are also likely to respond to a drop in demand by cutting production of EVs. That could mean limited availability of some vehicles on dealer lots, and therefore less pressure to lower prices, said Stephanie Valdez Streaty, director of industry insights at Cox Automotive.

But she also said automakers will face pressure to cut their prices to maintain some basic level of sales of their EV models.

“I think we’ll see some of that (price cuts and incentives) to keep the buying going,” Valdez Streaty said, adding that the loss of the tax credit won’t kill all demand.

Cox found that 65% of car buyers intending to purchase an EV in the next two years said they’ll go ahead with those plans, even without the tax credit. Only 20% said they would purchase a hybrid or traditional gas-powered car instead.

The same survey reports that vehicle performance, fuel and maintenance savings, as well as concerns about the environment were all more important factors to buyers than the tax credit itself.

And the EV tax credit doesn’t apply to all models. It’s not eligible for vehicles with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of greater than $80,000, so the expiration won’t necessarily affect the demand of many of the larger trucks or luxury models.

Also, unless Americans buy a vehicle from Tesla, which sells directly to consumers, most buyers will go through a dealership. Dealerships negotiate the transaction price with a buyer, which means what EV buyers will eventually pay will be something of a “moving target,” said David Green, industry analyst for Cars.com.

I think there’s going to be a little bit of turmoil in the market for quite some time,” Green said.

Clarence Thomas

Clarence Thomas says precedent might not determine cases on upcoming supreme court docket

Settled legal precedent in the US is not “gospel” and in some instances may have been “something somebody dreamt up and others went along with”, the US supreme court justice Clarence Thomas has said.

Thomas – part of the conservative supermajority that has taken hold of the supreme court over Donald Trump’s two presidencies –delivered those comments Thursday at the Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law in Washington DC, ABC News and other outlets reported. His remarks preceded the nine-month term that the supreme court is scheduled to begin on 6 October.

US Supreme Court lets Trump withhold $4 billion in foreign aid

John Kruzel

Fri, September 26, 2025 at 4:48

This headline is Bullshit, they affirmed the power of the President and CiCThey are not granting him the power they are acknowledging his power.

By John Kruzel

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Supreme Court sided again on Friday with Donald Trump, allowing his administration to withhold about $4 billion in foreign aid authorized by Congress for the current fiscal year as the Republican president pursues his "America First" agenda.

The case raises questions involving the degree to which a president has the authority to rescind funds Congress has appropriated for programs that do not align with his policies. The U.S. Constitution gives Congress the power of the purse.

The justices for now granted the Justice Department's request to block Washington-based U.S. District Judge Amir Ali's order that had directed the administration to promptly take steps to spend the aid at issue in the dispute. Ali's decision came in a lawsuit by aid groups challenging the administration's action.

The Supreme Court has a 6-3 conservative majority. The court's three liberal justices dissented.

The court said in its unsigned order that the aid groups may lack the legal authority to bring their challenge. It also expressed concerns that ruling against Trump at this stage in the case threatened to impair his power to conduct foreign affairs.

The court's liberals, in a dissent written by Justice Elena Kagan, called the ruling an affront to the constitutional principle that power is separated between the three branches - executive, legislative and judicial - of the U.S. government. They noted that the Constitution "gives Congress the power to make spending decisions through the enactment of appropriations laws."

"If those laws require obligation of the money, and if Congress has not by rescission or other action relieved the Executive of that duty, then the Executive must comply," Kagan wrote in a dissent joined by fellow liberal Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson.

The administration said in court papers that the money it targeted is "contrary to U.S. foreign policy," reflecting Trump's effort to scale back U.S. assistance abroad as part of an "America First" agenda. Trump also has moved to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development, the main U.S. foreign aid agency.

The U.S. government's 2025 fiscal year ends on September 30. The $4 billion in aid spending at issue in the case was intended by Congress for foreign aid, United Nations peacekeeping operations and democracy-promotion efforts overseas.

Congress budgeted billions of dollars in foreign aid last year, about $11 billion of which was set to expire at the end of the fiscal year.

The administration sought to block the $4 billion at issue in the case through a "pocket rescission," an unusual move aimed at avoiding spending funds appropriated by Congress.

The administration has repeatedly asked the Supreme Court this year to intervene to allow implementation of Trump policies impeded by lower courts. The court has sided with the administration in almost every case it has been called upon to review since Trump returned to the presidency in January.

In an earlier iteration of the foreign aid case, the court in a 5-4 vote in March declined to let the administration withhold payment of some $2 billion to aid organizations for work they already performed for the government.

'GRAVE HUMANITARIAN IMPACT'

(The only reason Trump is allowing these judicial decisions is that NO President will ever be challenged again. Even though he and they know the power of the President and CiC.)

Zelensky — I will end my presidency after the war.

Does anyone see the problem of his statement? Its the people who determines who the President, and the President cannot continue ruling if there is no vote. He for his benefit, deemed there can be no election during wartime, that he intentionally extends.

If war is settled Zelensky cannot sign a peace treaty because he is illegally running the country.

Now does the Trump admin understand why Putin and Russia is hesitant to negotiate a peace treaty. Not to neglect the fact Ukraine said they will never sign a peace treaty.

Faking that Zelensky is legal to sign a peace treaty doesn’t make it legal. Why would Russia do that?

(Personally I doubt Trump gave Zelensky the approval for Tomahawk missiles to attack Russia.)

Russia ‘proud’ of reunification with Donbass – Putin

The president said Moscow had protected people living on ‘ancestral Russian land’

Moscow is proud to have accepted four former Ukrainian regions into Russia, President Vladimir Putin has said.

The Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, as well as the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye, voted to secede from Ukraine and join Russia in referendums held in September 2022.

In a video address released by the Kremlin on Tuesday,Putin described the territory as “ancestral Russian land,” whose population “had independently and freely chosen to join Russia.”

“We have done what we had to do, and we are proud of it. We offered support to our brothers and sisters in making their firm, responsible choice,” Putin said.

He added that Russia was “defending its core national interests, shared memory and values, the Russian language, traditions, culture, and faith, and the sacred right to honor the deeds of its ancestors.”

The predominantly Russian-speaking regions of Donetsk and Lugansk voted to declare independence following the 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev. Crimea voted to join Russia the same year. Since then, Ukraine has passed several laws restricting the use of Russian in workplaces, education, and the media, and has led a campaign to erase historic ties to the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union.

Ukraine and most countries refuse to recognize Russia’s new borders, while Ukrainian forces continue to occupy parts of the regions.

West at war with Russia – Polish PM

The Ukraine conflict is the biggest threat of the century, putting the future of Western civilization at risk, Donald Tusk has claimed

The Ukraine conflict is also the war of the West, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has stated. The “most important task” for the EU leaders is to make their societies aware of the threat allegedly posed by Russia, he told the Warsaw Security Forum on Monday.

Poland has been one of Kiev’s key backers in its conflict with Moscow, with Tusk taking a particularly hardline stance on the issue. Earlier this month,he complained about the fellow Poles developing “antipathy” towards Ukraine, blamed it on Russia, and urged the Polish politicians to “stem this tide.”

On Monday, he claimed that “the biggest and most important task for European leaders today is to makeWestern societies aware” that the Ukraine conflict is the most serious risk faced by them in the 21st century.

“This war is also our war,” Tusk stated, claiming that it is “of our fundamental interest.” According to the prime minister, a defeat in this conflict would allegedly affect the entire Western civilization from Poland to the US.

He then called for “solidarity and unity” within the EU and NATO, which he claimed was needed to prevail and “defeat” Russia.

The prime minister also spoke about a planned “large-scale modernization” of the Polish army and called for mobilization of both societies and governments within the EU. Earlier this month, Warsaw accused Moscow of sending a volley of drones into its airspace – an allegation Russia has denied.

Moscow has repeatedly described the Ukraine conflict as a proxy war waged by the West against Russia. Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the Ukraine crisis was provoked by the EU and NATO and used by the two blocs to declare “an actual war” on Moscow.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday, the minister dismissed claims made by certain European officials about Moscow allegedly considering attacking NATO in the coming years. “Russia has not had such intentions,” Lavrov said, adding thatMoscow had repeatedly invited NATO member states to work out “legally binding security guarantees” in Europe, but its offer was ignored.

Trump calls US allies ‘foolish’ over recognition of Palestine

The UK and France are among the nations that defied Washington’s warnings last week

US President Donald Trump has lambasted key European allies for formally recognizing Palestinian statehood.

Several nations, including France, the UK, Canada, and Australia, recognized the State of Palestine during last week’s UN General Assembly session, drawing condemnation from the US and Israel.

“Several countries have foolishly recognized the Palestinian state. Some of our European friends, allies, good people,” Trump said at a press conference alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday.“But they’re really, I think, doing that because they’re very tired of what’s been going on for so many decades,”he added.

On Monday, Trump unveiled his 20-point roadmap to peace, whichcalls for the disarmament of Hamas, the release of the remaining Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, and the establishment of atransitional government in Gaza.

Netanyahu thanked Trump for taking a “firm position that the Palestinian Authority could have no role whatsoever in Gaza.”He warned that Israel “will finish the job” should Hamas reject the deal.

The European states have maintained that recognizing Palestine affirms a two-state solution and could help advance the peace process in Gaza, where more than 66,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023 and nearly all others displaced. Netanyahu argued that the move emboldened Hamas to carry out more attacks on Israeli civilians.

The UK government said last week that Hamas “will have no role in the future of Palestine,”while French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the “recognition of the State of Palestine is a defeat for Hamas and for all those who incite antisemitic hatred.”

(Now I know why I was never interested in this war. There are no definitive areas and who owns it, and why. I also think there will never be Peace there, so they do their blood feud for centuries to come. That’s why Trump is dealing with Gaza territory only.)

EU heavily influenced Moldovan elections – MEP (VIDEO)

Brussels used the same tactics to sideline opposition in Moldova as it did in Romania, Diana Sosoaca has told RT

The European Union has swayed Moldova’s parliamentary elections in the same way it did in Romania’s recent presidential race; by sidelining opposition candidates, Romanian MEP Diana Sosoaca told RT on Monday.

Moldova held elections on Sunday, in which pro-EU Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) secured a narrow majority in parliament, by edging out the Patriotic Electoral Bloc (BEP), which campaigned to uphold the country’s constitutional neutrality. Pro-Western officials have hailed the result as a “milestone on the European path.” Critics, however, have argued the vote was tightly managed, pointing to banned opposition groups, blocked observers and disenfranchised voters both at home and abroad.

“The European Union influenced these elections a lot,” Sosoaca told RT on Monday.

Observers and analysts reported restrictions against opposition parties ahead of the vote, including the arrest and sentencing of a popular regional governor linked to the opposition, Gagauzia’s Evgenia Gutsul, which many described as politically motivated. Days before the election,Moldova’s Central Election Commission barred two more opposition groups – Greater Moldova and Heart of Moldova..

Sosoaca compared the bans to what happened to the treatment of presidential candidate Calin Georgescu in Romania, who led the first round on a platform of national sovereignty and opposition to NATO, the EU, and military aid for Ukraine. Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled his win for alleged campaign “irregularities,” and the re-run in May was won by pro-EU candidate Nicusor Dan.

Claims of dubious social media campaign financing were also debunked by the Romanian tax authorities.

Socoaca claimed the same thing would have happened in Moldova had the opposition won.

Moldova is “a dictatorship,” the Romanian MEP said, and accused President Maia Sandu’s government of "diminishing" the Moldovan diaspora voteEarlier, Moscow accused Chisinau of disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of Moldovans living in Russia by offering only two polling stations there, compared with hundreds for substantially smaller diaspora groups across Western Europe.

Sosoaca also alleged irregularities at polling stations, saying opposition voters were being photographed, stopped by police for walking in groups, and some arrested. This, according to her, discouraged many from voting.

The EU stole the Moldva election to put in the EU preferred leader. They have cheated many times.
