Trump announces deal with Pfizer to lower drug prices, including 'TrumpRx' website

The deal is part of Trump's broader effort to tie the amount the government pays for certain drugs to the prices paid overseas.1/2NBC immediately goes to criticism.

Updated Sept. 30, 2025, 1:10 PM EDT By Berkeley Lovelace Jr.

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that his administration has reached a deal with Pfizer for it to voluntarily sell its drugs at lower prices to Medicaid patients.

As part of the deal, Trump said, Pfizer will sell some of its drugs on a new “direct to consumer” website called “TrumpRx.” Trump said the website would be operated by the federal government, but offered few details about how the program would work.

The deal Pfizer cut with the White House will give the company a three-year grace period on Trump’s planned tariffs on pharmaceuticals made abroad, which are expected to take effect Wednesday.

The agreement on lower prices will cover “a large majority” of Pfizer's primary care medicines, along with speciality brand-name drugs, which will be offered at discounts averaging 50% and reaching as high as 85%, a spokesperson for the company said.

That includes Pfizer’s menopause drug Duavee, which will be available for as little as $30 — an 85% reduction, the spokesperson said. The overactive bladder drug Tobias will drop 85% to $42, while its skin ointment Eucrisa will see an 80% cut to $162.

The lower prices will go into effect “in the near future,” said Chris Klomp, the director of Medicare and deputy administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Trump said moving forward, all new drugs introduced by Pfizer to the U.S. market will be sold at the lower prices. “This is a really big announcement,” Trump said from the White House. “This is something that most people said was not doable.” Trump suggested more deals with other drugmakers would follow, but didn’t name any companies.

Experts, however, were unsure the deal would result in meaningful savings for Americans.(NBC puts their two cents in) The deal only applies “to one company and one program,” said Drew Altman, the president and CEO of KFF, a nonpartisan health policy research group.

Stacie Dusetzina, a health policy professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, said direct to consumer sales “are not going to help the average person at all with achieving lower costs.”

• Typically, with direct to consumer sales, patients must pay out of pocket, rather than use their insurance.

• “Most Americans buy drugs through their insurance plan, so that would mainly help the uninsured,” Altman

• It wasn’t immediately clear whether TrumpRx would be limited to Medicaid patients.

“These announcements serve as good PR for the drug companies but are more of a gimmick that only help a very small number of people,” Dusetzina said. “Instead, the average American is likely to be harmed by the broader policies pushed by the Administration, including a 100% tariff on drugs,” Dusetzina said of the overall deal. ”This will raise prices for consumers, not lower them.”

The announcement also comes as the Trump administration has made significant cuts to Medicaid.

Prescription drug prices are notoriously higher in the U.S. than in other wealthy countries, including for generic drugs.Drug spendings accounts for 10% of all health care spending in the U.S., Altman said.

A 2022 survey by KFF, a nonpartisan health policy research group, found 3 in 4 U.S. adultssay the cost of medications is unaffordable.

Pfizer, among the largest drugmakers in the U.S., makes a range of drugs, including the blood thinner Eliquis, the cancer drug Ibrance and the Covid vaccine. (Eliquis was among the drugs included in the first round of Medicare drug pricing negotiations during the Biden administration. The negotiated price is set to go into effect in 2026.)

The deal is part of Trump’s broader effort toimplement a “most favored nation” pricing model for prescription drugs, meaning that the U.S. pays no more than the lowest prices charged in other wealthy countries.

In May, Trump signed an executive order outlining the initiative, which directed federal officials to pursue a plan that would tie the amount the government pays for certain drugs to the prices paid overseas.

Pfizer is the first drugmaker to announce a deal under the plan.

The company will also announce a $70 billion investment in research and development and domestic manufacturing.

Trump administration to expand coal leasing, fund coal plant upgrades

Mon, Sep 29 20253:18 PM EDT

The Trump administration will expand coal mine leasing on federal lands and provide hundreds of millions of dollars to support more coal-fired power generation, officials said on Monday.

The plan is part of a broader effort by the administration to reverse the decline of coal use in the U.S., a fossil fuel that has been hard hit by environmental regulation and competition from natural gas in recent years.

At a press conference in Washington, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said his department would open 13.1 million acres (5.3 million hectares) of federal land for coal leasing. The area opened up, in North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming, was more than triple the area in President Donald Trump’s massive funding law.

President Joe Biden put a pause on coal leasing on federal lands and the last auction of leasing rights occurred in January 2021, just before he took office.

The Department of Energy, meanwhile, said it would provide $625 million in funds to expand power generation fueled by coal.

Lee Zeldin, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, said his agency would give coal plants more time to comply with regulations on coal ash, which contains contaminants including mercury, cadmium and arsenic and must be carefully disposed of.

Coal-burning plants generated about 15% of U.S. electricity in 2024, a fall from 50% in 2000, according to the Energy Information Administration, as fracking and other drilling methods have hiked natural gas output. Solar and wind power growth has also cut coal use.

The Sierra Club environmental group blasted the effort. “If this dangerous agenda continues to advance, years from now we will look around at failing health outcomes, skyrocketing bills, and a decaying environment,” it warned. (Wait they didn’t say the sky is falling too. I'm surprised we haven't hear Obama condemn and cry on this.)

The coal workforce has declined to about 40,000 from 70,000 a decade ago.Trump had signed executive orders in April to increase coal output, in one of his many actions that run counter to global efforts to cut carbon emissions.

Burgum, surrounded by more than a dozen coal miners wearing hard hats, said that the effort to support coal will strengthen the U.S. economy and create jobs.

Chris Wright, the U.S. energy secretary, told Reuters last week he expects most of the nation’s coal-fired power plants to delay retirement to help deliver electricity needed to fuel artificial intelligence. Last month,Wright extended his emergency order to keep a Michigan coal plant running, even though the plant’s operator had been planning to shut permanently for economic reasons.

Tom Pyle, president of the American Energy Alliance, predicted that 38 coal plants scheduled to close through 2028 would remain open, either on Trump orders or voluntarily.

Analysts, however, have been skeptical about a long-term U.S. boost in the use of coal as the economics have shifted in favor of less carbon-intensive fuel.

“Coal may see a temporary boost from regulatory relief, and some investors may profit in the short term,” Frank Holmes, CEO and chief investment officer of U.S. Global Investors, wrote after Trump’s orders. “But in the long run, I think the writing is on the wall.”

Hacker stole sensitive FEMA and border patrol data in months-long breach

By Sean Lyngaas, Gabe Cohen, CNN Updated: 12:24 PM EDT, Tue September 30, 2025

An unidentified hacker stole sensitive data from Customs and Border Protection and Federal Emergency Management Agency employees in a “widespread” breach this summer that lasted several weeks, according to an internal FEMA assessment reviewed by CNN.

The incident led to an urgent cleanup operation by senior Department of Homeland Security IT officials after the hacker gained deeper access to a FEMA computer network that handles operations in a region that stretches from New Mexico to Texas to Louisiana, the document says.

The incident has roiled the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees both FEMA and Customs and Border Protection, and raised new questions about the department’s ability to protect the information of the more than quarter-million people who work there. (I’m sure Bidan admin had these problems too.)

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the firing last month of two-dozen FEMA IT employees, including the agency’s top tech executives, blasting them for “severe lapses in security” that allowed a “threat actor to breach FEMA’s network and threaten the entire Department and the nation as a whole.” Noem appears to have been referring to the same incident described in the document obtained by CNN.

In her August 29 statement, Noem said that “no sensitive data was extracted from any DHS networks,” but the document says that on September 10, a “DHS Task Force” and FEMAs officials confirmed that the attacker stole FEMA and CBP employee data. The document, which was presented to FEMA staff this week in an update on the breach, reveals just how easily the attacker bypassed the agency’s digital defenses.

In mid-July, as the intruder navigated FEMA’s systems and attempted to extract sensitive information, DHS launched its initial efforts to contain and halt the breach.Yet, according to the assessment, nearly two months later — by September 5 — DHS and FEMA were still trying to remediate the incident. It was not immediately clear who carried out the hack. CNN has requested comment from DHS and FEMA.

The attacker hit software made by Citrix, a government contractor, that allows users to access networks remotely. That type of software is a prime target for hackers because it can be a gateway to more sensitive parts of a network.

NextGov/FCW, a tech news publication, first reported on the document.

Though Noem called the fired FEMA workers incompetent, some longtime FEMA officials previously told CNN that the ousted leaders were “extremely competent” and “highly respected.”

The firings came on the heels of another controversy: Several agency employees had just been placed on administrative leave and later put under investigation for signing an open letter to Congress warning that the Trump administration’s overhaul of the agency was undermining disaster response and putting communities at risk.

Noem has insisted her department is “cleaning house at FEMA.” Her sweeping actions have left many high-ranking current and former officials questioning whether she is using these incidents as a pretext for a broader purge. At any given time, US officials are dealing with numerous hacking threats facing the sprawling confederation of federal computer systems.

US cyber officials issued an “emergency directive” last week ordering federal agencies to defend their networks against an “advanced” group of hackers that have breached at least one agency in an apparent espionage campaign. It was not immediately clear if the FEMA breach is related to that activity.

Wild's Kirill Kaprizov signs richest deal in NHL history with 8-year, $136M extension

Kaprizov will earn an average of $17M per season on a contract that will keep him in Minnesota through the 2033-34 season (I know Russia is cheering loudly)

Sean LeahyContributing writer Tue, September 30, 2025 at 11:40 AM EDT·

The Minnestota Wild and Kirill Kaprizov have worked out a record deal for the Russian forward.

On Tuesday, Kaprizov signed an eight-year, $136 million contract extension that will keep him in Minnesota through the 2033-24 season. The average annual value of $17 million and total contract dollars are the highest in NHL history, with the AAV surpassing that of previous record holder Leon Draisaitl's $14 million.

According to The Athletic's Michael Russo, Kaprizov will receive a $1 million salary per season, along with a July 1 signing bonus structure of $18.1 million from 2026-2029, then $16 million in 2030, $14.2 million in 2031, and $12.7 million in the final two years. The extension also features a full no-move clause.

Kaprizov's new deal will kick in with the 2026-27 NHL season. His current contract, a five-year, $45 million extension signed in Sept. 2021, will expire after this coming season.

The 28-year-old Kaprizov, a fifth-round pick by the Wild in the 2015 NHL draft, is entering his sixth season.Since coming into the league in 2020-21, he has scored 185 goals, including three 40-goal seasons, and recorded 386 points.

Negotiations between the two sides had been ongoing as training camp approached. But a week before players reported, Kaprizov reportedly rejected an eight-year, $128 million contract.

"You guys know I like Minny and everyone knows this," Kaprizov said after camp opened two weeks ago."We have a lot of time [to sign]. It's just 2025 and it's one more year I have. I just want to play hockey and focus and win some games and go into [the Stanley Cup] playoffs and win there. Just focus on this now."

How the massive Kaprizov deal affects future NHL contracts will be intriguing. Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid can be an unrestricted free agent next summer and currently carries a $12.5 million salary cap hit on his eight-year, $100 million contract, which he signed in 2017.

Kremlin explains why Putin avoids social media

The Russian president has no intention of engaging online beyond official communications, spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said

Russian President Vladimir Putin has no plans to run personal social media accounts, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS on Monday.

The president is “present on social media” through official Kremlin channels, but doesnot intend to engage personally because, “as he has said many times, it’s not his thing,” Peskov explained.

The spokesman previously noted that Kremlin staff keep Putin updated on trending online topics, while his family and acquaintances occasionally share information with him as well.

In 2017, Putin said that his schedule left no time for browsing the internet. He added that whatever downtime he had was better spent on fitness and other activities that helped him decompress.

”I organize my schedule in a way that allocates time for creative development, like listening to music, sports or talking with friends,” he said.“If you don’t find time for that, you won’t find time for anything.

Putin is also known for his aversion to mobile phones – something his supporters consider an important security asset. Documents leaked in 2015 by NSA whistleblower EdwardSnowden revealed that the United States tapped the phones of foreign leaders, including close allies such as then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Ukraine plotting false flag in EU – Moscow

Kiev is continuing to try to drag Western Europe into the conflict, according to Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR)

Kiev is planning a false-flag operation in the EU involving the deployment of a sabotage group to Poland posing as Russian and Belarusian special forces, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has said.

Earlier this month, Warsaw claimed that 19 Russian drones had entered the Polish airspace and called the incident a deliberate provocation by Moscow intended to test NATO’s response. Similar claims of a drone incursion were later made by Romania.

The SVR said in a statement on Tuesday that the drone incursions into the EU were part of continued efforts by Ukraine, which is losing on the battlefield, aimed at “drawing European NATO countries into armed conflict with Moscow.”

“Another provocation is currently being worked out” by the government of Vladimir Zelensky, the statement read. It wouldrevolve around “a sabotage and reconnaissance group deployed into Polish territory and allegedly consisting of special forces servicemen from Russia and Belarus,” it added.

Members of the unit have already been selected from the ranks of the Freedom of Russia Legion and the Belarusian Kastus Kalinouski Regiment, which have been fighting for Kiev in the Ukraine conflict, the agency said.

According to the scenario being prepared by Ukraine’s military intelligence (GUR) together with Polish spy agencies, after“the ‘detection and neutralization’ of the group by the security forces of Poland, its members are expected to appear before the media and give confessions, implicating Russia and Belarus in attempts to destabilize the situation in Poland,” the SVR stressed.

The belief in Ukraine is that, following the drone incursions, “such an event should leave no doubt in the minds of the Poles and other ordinary Europeans that Moscow and Minsk stand behind all the hostile actions,” it said.

“Kiev expects to prompt European countries to respond to Russia as harshly as possible, preferably in a military manner,” the SVR warned.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk claimed on Monday that the Ukraine conflict was “our war” and urged Western Europe to mobilize against Russia.

Speaking at the UN General assembly last week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that Moscow has no aggressive plans against NATO, but warned that any aggression against the country would be met with “a resolute response.”

Lukashenko issues warning to NATO

Any attempts to shoot down Russian or Belarusian aircraft will be met with immediate retaliation, the president has said

Russia and Belarus will instantly retaliate “with all they’ve got” in the event that one of their aircraft is shot down by a NATO state, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has said.

Members of the US-led military bloc have been increasingly discussing downing Russian planes in recent weeks. Poland and Estonia accused Moscow of airspace violations earlier this month – allegations which Russia has said are devoid of any proof.

“They can blab, throw out shady statements, but when it comes down to action, you’ll see what they’ll shoot down and how,” Lukashenko said in an interview with Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday.

The president added that he often travels to places on the Belarusian border with Poland.

“Are they going to shoot down the presidential helicopter or some military escort helicopter? The retaliation will come instantly,” Lukashenko said.

Let them try and shoot something down. Maybe they’ll shoot down something Russian over Kaliningrad. God forbid, of course, but we’ll have to fight with all we’ve got.

Lukashenko expressed hope that the NATO countries would “calm down and talk.”

“They need loud statements today to calm down some part of Polish society,” he added.

In early September, Warsaw accused Moscow of sending a number of drones into its airspace, which Russia has denied.

Last week, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski warned that any intrusions into Polish airspace would be met with force.

US President Donald Trump replied affirmatively when asked whether NATO states should be able to shoot down Russian aircraft that breach their airspace.

In September, the US had taken steps towards a thaw in relations with Belarus, dropping some Biden-era sanctions on the country’s domestic airline in return for the pardoning of scores of prisoners.

The West has imposed several rounds of sanctions on Belarus, a close Russian ally, including following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.

Kiev wants Western platforms to enforce Ukrainization – official

YouTube and Spotify must not recommend Russian content to Ukrainians, the language ombudsman has said

Ukraine is pressuring major Western media platforms such as YouTube and Spotify to adjust their recommendation algorithms to reduce the amount of Russian-language material shown to Ukrainian users,Kiev’s language ombudsmanrevealed in an interview published on Monday.

Speaking to RBC-Ukraine, Elena Ivanovskaya claimed thatRussian content “is not just entertainment, it’s a soft power that subliminally affects consciousness, normalizes aggression, [and] deludes identity.

She argued that when platforms recommend Russian songs or TV series to Ukrainians,“it is not a choice, but manipulation,” and called for policiesensuring that “Russian products do not sound in the background and form unconscious habits.” (They are so desperate that they have to brainwash their own people.)

Recommendation algorithms typically maximize user engagement by promoting content popular or trending within a demographic group to users from the same group.Ivanovskaya said that allowing this to favor Russian media undermines Ukraine’s cultural identity.

Since the 2014 Western-backed armed coup in Kiev, Ukrainian authorities have pursued policies aimed at reducing the use of Russian – a language spoken by much of the population – in public life. Laws require Ukrainian in media, education, and commerce, and officials have nudged citizens to use Ukrainian in private settings as well.

Ivanovskaya said her office is encouraging parents to raise their children speaking Ukrainian because “if the mom puts the ‘shackles of the Russian language’ on her kid, removing them later would be difficult.”

The state, she said, must be “uncompromising,” not only opposing Russian content, but also “going on the offensive by supporting the Ukrainian product,” so that “every sphere of life is made pro-Ukrainian through a concise, deliberate legislative effort.”

She rejected accusations of censorship, insisting Ukrainians have “made their civilizational choice,”while acknowledging that Russian-language use has recently increased.

Moscow has accused Kiev of attempting to eradicate Russian culture and says ending such discriminative policies is one of its key objectives in the ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian orphanage raked in salaries for years despite offloading kids – media

The alleged scheme cost the government $5.6 million, an investigation has revealed

A Ukrainian orphanage that relocated all of its children starting early 2022continued to draw government funding for yearsbefore finally being shut down this summer, according to a report by NGL.Media.

The outlet, which is supported by Western government grants, said the Sonechko orphanage in Zaporozhye Region – described as thecountry’s largest – kept receiving budget money despite moving 178 children under the age of six in March 2022and de facto operating as a transit hub for new orphans through 2024. Zaporozhye Region voted to join Russia in 2022, but parts of it remain under Kiev’s control.

Despite its reduced workload, Sonechko collected a sum equivalent to $5.6 million, with most of it going toward salaries and bonuses, the report said.

The facility employed 424 people at the startof the conflict. NGL.Mediafound that of the handful of staff members who moved with the children, only one continues to care for them. The rest stayed behind in Zaporozhye on “stand-by mode,” a legal status that guaranteed at least two-thirds of their pay. The orphanage was finally closed in June.

The investigation builds on NGL.Media’s earlier reporting on alleged corruption in Ukraine’s orphanage system. The outlet notedthat schemes involving phantom employees or kickbacks from real staff to avoid working are common in budget-funded institutions. Ukraine heavily depends on foreign aid and loans to finance both its military and civilian programs.

The report comes amid rising criticism in Europe of Ukrainian refugees perceived as reluctant to join the workforce. Just last week, Poland introduced a measure requiring Ukrainian guardians to be employed in order to receive the “800 plus” monthly child allowance (800 zloty is approximately $220). Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s office said the change was aimed at ending what it called “tourism from Ukraine at the expense of Polish taxpayers.”

EU to bend rules for Ukraine and Moldova admission process – FT

Hungary previously blocked accession talks, warning that Kiev’s entry would cripple EU finances and devastate farmers

The EU plans to adjust its rules in order to push ahead with technical steps for admitting Ukraine and Moldova, thereby bypassing the Hungarian veto that has stalled formal accession talks with Kiev, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

No negotiation cluster has been opened for Ukraine as Hungary has repeatedly vetoed the procedural steps required to launch the first one. Budapest has consistently opposed Ukraine’s EU membership bid, citing Kiev’s treatment of ethnic Hungariansand the potential economic strain Ukrainian accession would entail for the bloc.

According to the FT, however, the European Commission has proposed adjusting its own rules to sidestep the veto by launching technical work in several clusters even without a formal decision to open negotiations in those areas. A negotiation cluster is a group of related policy areas that a candidate country must negotiate as part of the accession process.

Brussels on Monday backed European Council President Antonio Costa’splan to bypass Budapest’s veto by allowing a qualified majority of member states to open negotiating clusters for Ukraine and Moldovainstead of requiring unanimous approval at each stage as is the case now, Politico reported.

The issue is set to be discussed at an informal European Council meeting in Copenhagen later this week.

Ukraine applied for EU membership in February 2022, while Moldova submitted its application the following month.

The two bids have long been informally treated as a package, though some in the bloc argue they should be considered separately. Zelensky has claimed that splitting them would signal a rift in the EU over security guarantees for Kiev – a stance critics see as an attempt to keep Moldova tied to Ukraine’s slower-moving accession bid.

Last month, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto warned that Ukraine’s accession “would be the coup de grace to the European Union,” arguing thatthe bloc would have to divert “practically all” its financial resources to support Kiev, while cheaper Ukrainian farm products would “destroy European agriculture.”

Unlike most EU member states, Hungary has refused to supply weapons to Ukraine and has repeatedly criticized EU sanctions on Russia. Moscow says it has no objection to Ukraine joining the EU but considers Kiev’s proposed accession to NATO an unacceptable security threat.

Ford CEO expects EV sales to be cut in half after end of tax credits

Published Tue, Sep 30 202511:35 AM EDT

Michael Wayland@MikeWayland

Key Points

• Ford CEO Jim Farley said he expects demand for all-electric vehicles will be slashed in half next month as federal incentives end.

• Farley said the industry learned that“partial electrification,” such as hybrids, are easier for customers to accept for the time being.

DETROIT – Ford Motor CEO Jim Farley said he expects demand for all-electric vehicles to be slashed in half next month following the end of federal tax incentives on Wednesday. Farley on Tuesday said he “wouldn’t be surprised” if sales ofEVs fell from a market share of around 10% to 12% this month— which is expected to be a record — to 5% after the incentive program ends.

“I think it’s going to be a vibrant industry, but it’s going to be smaller, way smaller than we thought, especially with the policy change in the tailpipe emissions, plus the $7,500 consumer incentive going away,” he said during a Ford event about promoting skilled trades and workers in Detroit. “We’re going to find out in a month. I wouldn’t be surprised that the EV sales in the U.S. go down to 5%.”

Farley said the industry learned that “partial electrification,” such as hybrids, are easier for customers to accept for the time being. Farley said his Model e EV team is analyzing the demand for non-gas-powered vehicles each day. The company currently offers a handful of all-electric vehicles, including the F-150 Lightning pickup, which can top $90,000, and Mustang Mach-E crossover in the U.S.

The federal EV incentives of up to $7,500 are coming to an end as part of the Trump administration’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which stripped the old enticementbut included some perks for buying a U.S.-assembled vehicle, regardless of it being an EV.

“Customers are not interested in the $75,000 electric vehicle. They find them interesting. They’re fast, they’re efficient, you don’t go to the gas station, but they’re expensive,” Farley said. Once the bill was passed, sales of EVs quickly gained traction, especially as some automakers added even more discounts to move out older models.

Cox Automotive forecasts sales of EVs hit 410,000 during the third quarter, up 21% from a year earlier. That would easily be the highest amount of EVs ever sold in a quarter in the U.S., as well as a record 10% market share. Cox and other industry analysts and executives expect many buyers pulled ahead plans to purchase an EV before the federal incentives sunset.

Farley also said the federal changes mean the auto industry, including Ford, will have to adapt, sayingthe company will have to figure out what to do with its battery plants and EV capacity.

“We’ll fill them, but it will be more stress, because we had a four-year predictable policy,” Farley said. “Now the policy changed. … We all have to make adjustments, and it’s going to be good for the country, I believe, but it will be one more stress.” Farley was speaking Tuesday at the automaker’s “Ford Pro Accelerate” event, which features executives from many industries as well as public officials discussing the “essential economy” and need for skilled labor and education.
