An outbreak of norovirus sickened 98 people on a Royal Caribbean cruise ahead of its final destination in Miami, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Sept. 30.

The outbreak on the cruise line’s Serenade of the Seas was reported to the health agency over the past weekend. Around 94 passengers onboard the ship reported being ill, along with four crew members.

More than 2,700 passengers and crew members are on board the ship, the CDC says. According to a cruise tracking service, the Serenade of the Seas departed San Diego on Sept. 19 and is slated to arrive in Miami on Thursday, as it made stops in Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia.

The “causative agent” was listed by the CDC as norovirus, a group of viruses that can cause severe diarrhea and vomiting. The primary symptoms listed by the agency on the ongoing outbreak were vomiting and diarrhea.

In response to the norovirus outbreak, Royal Caribbean said that it will increase cleaning and disinfection procedures on board the ship, collect stool specimens for testing, isolate crew and passengers who have symptoms, and consult with the CDC on its procedures and reporting cases to the agency.

Responding to the CDC’s report, a spokesperson for the cruise operator told The Epoch Times on Thursday that “the health and safety of our guests, crew, and the communities we visit are our top priority,” adding that the company’s staff “implement rigorous cleaning procedures, many of which far exceed public health guidelines.”

So far in 2025, there have been 19 gastrointestinal outbreaks on cruise ships. Fourteen of those outbreaks were caused by norovirus, according to the CDC.

An outbreak of the virus in July also impacted Royal Caribbean line Navigator of the Seas, which sickened 141 people out of more than 5,100 passengers and crew, the agency said. Continue…

Canadian psychologist and public speaker Jordan Peterson won’t be back on podcasts or tours anytime soon, as his health took a nosedive this summer, his daughter said in an update on social media.

“[Jordan Peterson] has been really sick,” Mikhaila Peterson posted on X on Oct. 4. “A lot of people have been asking for updates so here’s one. He’s recovering slowly day by day but I won’t lie, it’s slow and scary.”

The update came nearly two months after she first announced her father’s condition in mid-August, saying that a mould exposure led to a “severe” flare-up of a chronic illness he has been battling since 2017. In her latest post, she said Peterson fell ill and went to stay with her family in July, then was taken to the hospital by ambulance in August.

“Dad was in an ICU suffering from pneumonia and sepsis after dealing with a host of neurological issues this summer, and we believe [they] stem from CIRS, which is chronic inflammatory response syndrome due to decades of mould exposure,” Mikhaila Peterson said in a video uploaded to her post on X. Secretary of State for Defence Procurement Stephen Fuhr says it’s unlikely Ottawa will withdraw from its contract with the United States to purchase 16 F-35 fighter jets, because the aircraft are currently under production.

Fuhr told CBC’s Rosemary Barton Live that he doesn’t think Prime Minister Mark Carney will try to get out of the contract for the American-made jets despite comments from former Defence Minister Bill Blair in March that Canada was reconsidering the purchase amid trade tensions with the United States.

“I don’t think that’s the direction we’re heading,” Fuhr said during the Oct. 5 interview. “We have 16 aircraft in various stages of production at the manufacturer.”

But a defence procurement spokesperson said in a media statement following the interview that Fuhr was referring to moving ahead with the 16 jets under contract, not with replenishing the entire fleet.

“Canada is contractually obligated to 16 aircraft, which are in various stages of production with the manufacturer,” the spokesperson said. “A decision on the full program is currently under review.”

The Liberal government announced in 2023 its decision to procure 88 F-35 jets from the U.S. defence contractor Lockheed Martin. Carney asked for a review of the deal shortly after becoming prime minister this spring. Continue…

Carney to Meet With Trump in Washington on Oct. 7

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced he will travel to Washington, D.C., on Oct. 7, to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump for a “working visit.”

A release from the Prime Minister’s Office said the visit will be focused on “shared priorities in a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the U.S.” Both Canada and the United States recently launched consultations in preparation for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement’s (USMCA) renewal in 2026.

This will be Carney’s second visit to Washington, as he travelled to the White House to meet with Trump on May 6. Following that meeting, Carney told reporters that their “very constructive” and “wide-ranging” discussions would continue, but did not say when he believed Ottawa could get the United States to remove tariffs.

Throughout 2025, the United States has placed a wide range of tariffs on Canada, including 50 percent levies on steel, aluminum, and copper, 25 percent tariffs on vehicles and auto parts, and 10 percent tariffs on oil and potash. Canada is attempting to deport Pakistani national Gullfam Hussain due to "serious criminality and misrepresentation" on his visitor's visa. Michelle Rempel Garner stated in the House of Commons on October 2 that Hussain should not have been admitted into the country, reported the Epoch Times.
