Officials say the pilot will test elements of the wider buyback program, including an online portal and the initial collection of roughly 200 firearms ahead of a broader rollout. The program is intended to remove firearms that were reclassified as prohibited under recent federal orders.

Albertans lead the country when it comes to moving up on the social and economic ladder, while Quebec ranks at the bottom of the list for “social mobility,” according to results of a new study.

The study Barriers to Social Mobility Across Canada, from the public policy think tank MEI, looked at metrics like occupational licensing, business regulations, school quality, and tax rates among the provinces. Researchers used a scoring system where zero provided the lowest opportunity for social mobility and 100 was the highest.

Social mobility refers to an individual’s ability to “climb up the socio-economic ladder,” according to MEI.

“Social mobility is what makes the difference between having agency in moving up the income ladder, or being stuck in inherited poverty,” said Justin Callais, associate researcher at the MEI and co-author of the report.

Researchers found that those in Alberta have the best chance to improve their income and earnings with a score of 57.4 percent, while those in Quebec have the least likely chance of improving their social standing at 39.7 percent.

The numbers consider factors like occupational licensing, which can create barriers for those looking to get into the field by requiring people to take expensive courses, complete lengthy apprenticeships, and pay registration fees, the report authors said. Continue…

he Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says it has resolved another system outage that affected its inspection kiosks at airports across Canada on Oct. 2, but travellers may continue to face delays.

“The outage has been resolved,” the CBSA said in an Oct. 2 X post around 1:50 p.m. “Travellers may continue to experience delays in the short term as we resume normal processing operations. We thank you for your patience and apologize for any inconvenience experienced.”

The CBSA began experiencing the system outage at approximately 10:20 a.m. EDT on Oct. 2, which affected the agency’s primary inspection kiosks (PIK) at multiple Canadian international airports, a CBSA spokesperson told The Epoch Times in an email.

Airports in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, and Halifax may have been affected by the outage, the spokesperson said.

Toronto Pearson International Airport warned travellers in an X post around 11:45 a.m. that the outage was impacting Terminal 1 and 3, and passengers could experience “longer than normal” wait times.

The electronic inspection kiosks aim to speed up processing times during international travel to and from Canada by verifying traveller identity and receiving customs declarations. Continue…

An Alberta sovereignty group says three of its members travelled to Washington earlier this week for meetings with senior U.S. officials to discuss the prospects of the province separating from Canada.

The Alberta Prosperity Project (APP) said its representatives Mitch Sylvestre, Dennis Modry, and Jeffrey Rath met with senior U.S. officials in Washington on Sept. 29 to provide an update on the progress of Alberta’s separation initiative. This was the second time the group sent a delegation to Washington, with the first meeting taking place in April.

The APP said its recent meeting resulted in “even stronger commitments” from U.S. officials, whom the group did not name but described as senior members of President Donald Trump’s administration. In the April meeting, the officials had recognized the initiative and expressed “full support” for it, the group said.

“The purpose of this trip was to follow up on our April 2025 meeting, specifically to update the US administration on where APP is at in the quest for Alberta sovereignty, and to elaborate on the substantive mutual benefit to both US citizens and Alberta citizens consequent to Alberta becoming a sovereign country,” said Modry, the APP’s chair and co-founder.

Nova Scotia has passed legislation that permits military members to wear their uniforms in public spaces, including schools, following controversy in 2024 where an elementary school asked members and veterans not to wear uniforms to a school Remembrance Day service.

The Honouring Canadian Armed Forces Members Act, introduced on Oct. 2 and passed later that day, says that current and retired military members are permitted to wear their uniforms in all places that are owned by the provincial government, such as parks, hospitals, and schools, according to an Oct. 2 government press release.

Minister Responsible for Military Relations Barbara Adams said the legislation honours those who serve.

“Nova Scotians are proud of our military heritage, with many thousands of Nova Scotians who have served or are serving now, and just about everyone knows someone who has served,” Adams said. She added that “those who are brave enough to put on a uniform wear it with pride” and deserve respect.

“This legislation recognizes all who serve and reminds people what the uniform truly means.”

The province says that the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) in Halifax is the largest military base by population in Canada, noting that Nova Scotia has the highest concentration of military assets in Canada at 40 percent. Continue…

A federal Conservative MP is condemning “cancel culture” after the B.C. Conservatives dropped a staffer over online comments about the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

MP Aaron Gunn’s comments come after the recent firing of B.C. Conservative communications staffer Lindsay Shepherd, who says she was dismissed Oct. 1 as a result of a Sept. 25 social media post in which she disagreed with B.C.’s provincial legislature flying an orange flag ahead of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation marked on Sept. 30.

The day has been observed since a B.C. First Nation claimed ground-penetrating radar had found the remains of children at a former residential school in 2021, with similar announcements following across the country afterward.

“The most embarrassing form of ‘cancel culture’ is when it’s practiced by conservatives who spent their entire careers bemoaning its existence, or even being a victim of it, only to turn around and do it themselves,”

Conservative MP Aaron Gunn posted Oct. 1 on X, without referring directly to Shepherd’s dismissal.

Gunn’s comment about victims of cancel culture becoming its practitioners appeared to refer to B.C. Conservative Leader John Rustad, who was kicked out of the B.C. The CEO of Canada’s largest pipeline company is calling for the removal of the oil tanker ban off British Columbia’s northwest coast, saying it deters pipeline investment and holds back Canada’s economic potential.

Enbridge CEO Gregory Ebel made the comments on Oct. 2 while addressing the Empire Club of Canada, a Canadian speakers’ forum, in Toronto. He said Canada is at a decisive moment to capitalize on its natural resources and boost competitiveness through energy infrastructure, but that government regulations, such as the B.C. oil tanker ban, have created uncertainty and discouraged investment.

“There is a good reason the Alberta government has become the proponent of a pipeline to the north coast of BC,” Ebel said, referring to the province’s recent announcement that it will act as proponent and submit an application to the federal government’s Major Projects Office for a new bitumen pipeline to B.C.’s northwest coast.

“The previous government’s tanker ban effectively makes that export pipeline illegal. No company would build a pipeline to nowhere,” he added. “The tanker ban is a great example of how things will have to change to allow our country to maximize its economic potential.”

Ottawa in 2019 implemented a ban on the traffic of large oil tankers off British Columbia’s north coast, citing environmental concerns. A Canada-wide tour to advocate for reversal of new regulations for natural health products is set to launch in October.

The tour, put together by the Natural Health Product Protection Association (NHPPA), begins Oct. 4 in Victoria and makes several stops en-route to Ottawa, where the organizers intend to submit a petition and a “Charter of Health Freedom.” The organization says its petition will be presented in the House of Commons by Conservative MP Blaine Calkins.

The tour includes two other groups travelling from the Maritimes and Quebec, as well as a flight from Whitehorse, with the goal of converging at the nation’s capital on Oct. 25.

When the federal government passed Bill C-47 in 2023, Health Canada was given more jurisdiction for the oversight and regulation of natural health products (NHPs). This included a redefinition of therapeutics, the authority to impose increased fees and testing protocols, and the discretion to levy considerably larger fines for non-compliance.

According to the president and founder of the NHPPA, the changes could mean “life or death” for many consumers of natural health products if the products they rely on become more restricted or expensive.

“We’re talking between being totally disabled and being perfectly healthy,” Shawn Buckley, a constitutional lawyer and founder and president of NHPPA, said in an interview with The Epoch Times. Continue…

One of Canada’s leading constitutional law experts blasted a new Liberal “hate crime” bill as something that would “empower police” and the government to go after those it deems have violated a person’s “feelings” in a “hateful” way.

In a recent commentary piece posted by The Epoch Times, Canadian legal expert and lawyer John Carpay, founder and president of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF), observed that the Liberals’ Bill C-9, or Combating Hate Act, is dangerous.

“Canada’s Criminal Code should punish bad behaviour, not bad feelings. Canadians need protection from crime, not from offensive opinions that might be considered ‘hateful’ by some but not by others,” Carpay wrote.
