Trump commits US to defending Qatar’s security

By Alejandra Jaramillo, Abbas Al Lawati, CNN 2:22 PM EDT, Wed October 1, 2025

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order for the US to guarantee the security of Qatar —a significant commitment to a non-NATO, Arab ally.

“The United States shall regard any armed attack on the territory, sovereignty, or critical infrastructure of the State of Qatar as a threat to the peace and security of the United States,” the order, which is dated Monday, reads.

The order comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during a visit to the White House on Monday, apologized on the phone to the Qatari prime minister for Israel’s strike in Doha last month. Trump, in a joint appearance with Netanyahu, then presented his 20-point plan for peace in Gaza, ==which, unlike a previous version presented to Arab leaders, does not specifically mention that Israel will not attack Qatar.+=

==Trump’s order says the US will “take all lawful and appropriate measures” to defend Qatar.+=

“In the event of such an attack, the United States shall take all lawful and appropriate measures — including diplomatic, economic, and, if necessary, military — to defend the interests of the United States and of the State of Qatar andto restore peace and stability,” it reads.

Qatar welcomed Trump’s executive order, with the foreign minister saying in astatement that it reflects “the strong and longstanding ties between Doha and Washington.”

“Qatar remains committed to working with the United States and international partnersas a trusted mediator to address shared challenges, advance conflict resolution through diplomatic means, and support sustainable peace in the region,” the statement said.

The order marks a significant achievement forQatar, which – like other wealthy Gulf Arab states – has long sought a stronger US security guarantee. In 2022, Qatar was officially designated a major non‑NATO ally by the Biden administration, granting it enhanced military and defense privileges. It also hosts Al Udeid Air Base, one of the biggest US military hubs in the Middle East, highlighting the already deep security ties between Doha and Washington.

During his visit to the country earlier this year, Trump publicly pledged to “protect” Qatar, a promise made amid announcements of close to $3 trillion in economic commitments from Doha and other Gulf Arab states on Trump’s tour.Since then, Qatar has come under attack twice, by Iran and Israel.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have likewise sought more explicit US security guarantees. Riyadh had been engaged in discussions with Washington toward a more formal security framework, particularly in the final phase of the Biden administration, but no comprehensive agreement was concluded, either then or during Trump’s subsequent visit.

Before Trump went to the Gulf Countries, Trump refused to take 8 or 9 phone calls from Bibi. Bibi is walking on thin ice. Trump should ban Israel and Bibi from access on Tik Tok. I think the Tik Tok crowd won’t like the propaganda or hasbara as they call it.

The shutdown shakes up politics in Virginia, home to more than 300,000 federal workers

By Eric Bradner, Eva McKend, CNN 8:29 AM EDT, Wed October 1, 2025

The federal government shutdown — and the escalating battle over which party bears the most blame —has injected a major new question mark into the governor’s race in Virginia, home to hundreds of thousands of federal workers.

Early voting is already underway in the racebetween Democratic former Rep. Abigail Spanberger and Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears. Along with the New Jersey governor’s race,it represents a critical gauge of the nation’s political mood one year into Donald Trump’s presidency.

The state is home to more than 300,000 federal workers — more than any other state but Maryland. That reality means anxiety over government shutdowns and their economic fallout runs especially deep in northern Virginia’s densely populated suburbs outside Washington, DC.

Mike Magee, a 72-year-old retired former defense contractor from Aldie, said he was thinking about the threat of a shutdown Tuesday as he cast his early ballot for Spanberger.

“If we shut down, we lose essential services that are important. As taxpayers, we lose the services of the people that do the work that we’re budgeting, and it’s just a real shame that the parties can’t work together to come up with a way to keep the government going,” he said. “I absolutely blame the Republicans.”

He said he believes Spanberger is an impressive candidate but also wanted to “send a message to our country that we need a change in direction.”

Robert, a 71-year-old Navy veteran in Leesburg who asked to only be identified by his first name, said a shutdown was “one of the things on my mind” as he voted Tuesday.

“If the government does get shut down, you can blame it on (Sen. Chuck) Schumer,” he said. “He wants everything to go back to the way it was under Joe Biden, and that’s not the direction this country should be going in.”

Races for governor in Virginia are often seen as barometers of the national mood: The state limits governors to one term, so it’s always an open-seat race. Once a Republican-leaning state, Virginia now favors Democrats in presidential elections but remains competitive, as Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin proved with his 2021 victory.

Already, Trump’s administration has slashed many federal jobs through Department of Government Efficiency-led firings and buyouts. The threat of further cuts looms after a memo issued last weekby the White House’s budget office said a shutdown would serve as a legal justification for sweeping new layoffs.

“Given the impact of the tariffs, the impact of DOGE, the impending impact of the so-called ‘one big, beautiful bill,’ I as a candidate for governor am focused on the fact that a government shutdown is just one additional element that will create and continue to create dire circumstances for so many Virginians,” Spanberger told The Hill this week.

Earle-Sears was among 14 Republican lieutenant governors who signed a letter dated Monday to Senate leaders in both parties, calling for Democrats to support a “clean” continuing resolutionto keep the government funded into November — the approach favored by congressional Republicans.

“It’s the Democrats who are holding this up when all we want is a clean continuing resolution so that we can continue to negotiate,” she told CNN at a campaign event last week.

The threat of a shutdown could force the two gubernatorial campaigns to focus on the same issue— a rarity in a race that has seen Spanberger seek to drive an economics and affordability-focused message, tying Earle-Sears to Trump’s policies, while Earle-Sears has hammered her Democratic rival on cultural issues, notably trans participation in youth sports. One ad casts Spanberger as “for they/them, not for us.”

Still,CNN’s conversations with early voters made clear that a shutdown, and the ensuing battle over who is to blame, is far from the only factor being considered by voters— many of whom made up their minds long ago.

Peter Gustafson, a 72-year-old retired graphic designer who lives near Leesburg, said “of course” he was thinking about the shutdown when he cast his vote for Spanberger on Tuesday.

However, he said, the shutdown didn’t change his opinion on the governor’s race.

“I think it’s the best alternative to the criminal we have in the White House right now,” he said.

=David Mohr, a 68-year-old information technology professional in Leesburg, said Earle-Sears was his choice because “her values, in terms of moving Virginia forward, keeping our kids safe in school — those are important for me.”

He said he isn’t sure which party he blames for the shutdown.

“It’s just, like, par for the course,” he said.

‘Don’t Turn Yourself In’: Blue City Anarchists Offer Workshop On Hiding From Law EnforcementOctober 1, 2025

Left-wing anarchists are planning a workshop event in Pennsylvania onhow to be a “fugitive” from law enforcement.

Fringe leftist websites are advertising an “Annual Philly Skillshare Convergence” from Oct. 3-5 that will teach skills such as “hiding from drones=,” “practices to resist state coercion” and how to take oneself “off-grid.” The scheduled event shows how some on the far-left are taking precautions as the Trump administration promises swift law enforcement action against activists driving organized political violence.

Similarly titled “skillshare” workshops have been advertised online in recent months in cities around the country —but information for the October event reflects a more explicitly militant tone than others.

“Don’t turn yourself in, be fugitive: repression preparedness material/prefigurative practices to resist state coercion,” a portion of the event’s description reads. Similar topics on the online flyer include “Invisibility for Cyberpunks: hiding from drones, thermal, & night vision,” “Running/Hitting Da Bricks” and using a “one-time pad” to encrypt digital communications.

Other items on theflyer appear to address living without trackable technology, such as “Off-grid Basics: A Discussion & Workshop for Short-Term & Medium-Term Outdoor Living” and “Power Anywhere:Introduction to 12v Electricity and Solar.”

Online announcements of the workshop do not name a specific location, individual organizers or formal groups behind it, insteadasking viewers to contact an encrypted email address for more information.

“We respectfully request that you do not write an article about our event,” an anonymous user of the email address told theDCNF when asked for comment. “You do not have our consent and will not be answering your questions. Thanks!”

The event is also featured on the website“Philly Anti-Capitalist,”which states on its “About” page that it “does not condone illegal activity.” Philly Anti-Cap did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

Instruction at the workshop even extends to“Building Abortion Care Networks & Reproductive Autonomy,” “Meditations on Drug Use & Liberation” and “Safety Planning for Parties, Orgies, and Actions,” according to the online postings.

Violent leftist radicalism has repeatedly captured national attention in recent months, with left-wing suspects leading law enforcement on multi-day manhunts over a July 4 terrorist attack at a Texas Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building and the Sept. 10 assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

Benjamin Song, an Antifa-style or “antifascist” activist, ran from the FBI and Texas police for over a week— after authorities say he opened fire on the Alvaredo ICE facility during an ambush by black-clothed agitators with whom Song had arrived.

Song became one of the Texas’ top ten most wanted fugitives until his July 15 arrest.Authorities later charged two co-defendants with working together to help Song flee from justice via meetings and conversations on Signal, an encrypted text messaging app. More than a dozen people face charges in the July 4 attack, which officials have linked to the anarchist Antifa movement and its goal of overthrowing the U.S. government, according to WFAA.

Federal and Utah authorities also spent two days searching for Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of fatally shooting Kirk at Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem. His family eventually convinced him to turn himself in on Sept. 11 after recognizing him from photos the FBI released to the public, officials have said. Robinson wrote political phrases such as “hey fascist! CATCH!” on gun cartridges, according to prosecutors.

The After Kirk’s murder,President Donald Trump issued an executive order designating Antifa a “domestic terrorist organization” and a memodirecting officials to consider racketeering charges and other measures against those driving “organized political violence.”

“This political violence is not a series of isolated incidents and does not emerge organically. Instead, it is a culmination of sophisticated, organized campaigns of targeted intimidation, radicalization, threats, andviolence designed to silence opposing speech, limit political activity, change or direct policy outcomes, and prevent the functioning of a democratic society,” Trump’s memo reads. “A new law enforcement strategy that investigates all participants in these criminal and terroristic conspiracies —including the organized structures, networks, entities, organizations, funding sources, and predicate actions behind them — is required.”

Government shutdown live updates: Layoffs coming in days, Trump administration warns

This is CNBC’s live blog for the first day of the U.S. government shutdown on Oct. 1, 2025. Please refresh the page throughout the day for new updates.

Government shutdown live updates: Layoffs coming in days, Trump administration warns

(No citizen cares, that’s what they are missing!)

The United States government shut down early Wednesday morning, setting the stage for the furlough of hundreds of thousands of federal workers and the shuttering of a slew of key programs and services.

Here’s what to know:

• The full shutdown began after top Democrats and Republicans, including President Donald Trump, failed to agree on a short-term deal to keep the government funded.

• Democrats, led by Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, demand that any stopgap funding measure include an extension of enhanced Obamacare tax credits.

• Trump suggested Tuesday that his administration could take major actions during a shutdown, including cutting government benefits for “large numbers of people.”

• The Senate once again failed to pass dueling Republican and Democratic funding proposals.

• Here’s how key federal agencies are being affected by the shutdown.

MOMENTS AGO

Some homebuyers could experience delays in closing, analyst says(so what?)

Homebuyers who need specific mortgages through the Federal Housing Administration, Veteran Affairs, and U.S. Department of Agriculture loans could experience delaysduring the shutdown, said Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate.

However, buyers applying for government-backed mortgages via Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac should not be affected by the shutdown, Rossman said.

Those who need flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program can also “expect delays in closing,” said Melissa Cohn, regional vice president of William Raveis Mortgage.

The NFIP’s authority to issue new policies has lapsed, complicating about 1,400 property transactions each day and leaving buyers in high-risk areas without flood insurance coverage, according to the National Association of Realtors.

Existing flood insurance policies will remain active, including a 30-day grace period, and can be transferred to new owners, according to the NAR.

NFIP claims will continue to be paid, but for how long will depend on the shutdown’s duration, NAR said.

Trump’s pharmaceutical tariff threat loses bite after Pfizer deal reassures drugmakers KEK

PUBLISHED WED, OCT 1 20258:56

KEY POINTS

• President Donald Trump’s long-awaited threat to impose pharmaceutical tariffs may not pose as much of a challenge as drugmakers once feared, following his new drug-pricing deal with Pfizer.

• Trump’s agreement with Pfizer included a three-year exemption from pharmaceutical-specific tariffs, so long as the firm further invests in domestic manufacturing.

• That deal brought much-needed relief to the broader pharmaceutical industry, signaling that many drugmakers could strike similar agreements that would make them immune to the levies due to recent U.S. manufacturing investments.

President Donald Trump’s long-awaited threat to impose pharmaceutical tariffs may not pose as much of a challenge as drugmakers once feared, following his new drug pricing deal with Pfizer

.

Trump’s Tuesday agreement with the company to voluntarily lower U.S. drug prices included a three-year exemption from pharmaceutical-specific tariffs, as long as the firm further invests in domestic manufacturing. Pfizer on Tuesday pledged to put $70 billion into U.S. manufacturing and research, on top of previous investments.

That deal brought relief and clarity to Pfizer and the broader pharmaceutical industry, signaling that many drugmakers could strike similar agreements that would make them immune to the levies for most of Trump’s term.

The Trump administration also made it clear that it will try to secure those drug pricing agreements before it imposes tariffs. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Tuesday said he will let companies finish their negotiations with the administration before setting pharmaceutical-specific levies under the legal authority known as Section 232.

Trump on Tuesday said he’s working with other drugmakers to secure similar pacts over the next week, and theWhite House confirmed that Eli Lilly is expected to strike the next drug pricing deal. The vast majority of major pharmaceutical companies, including Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson

, AstraZeneca

, AbbVie

, Roche

, Novo Nordisk

and Amgen

have unveiled new U.S. investments in manufacturing or research facilities in recent months to build goodwill with the president.

Shares of Pfizer and several other drugmakers rose on Tuesday following the agreement. Pfizer’s stock ended more than 6% higher, while Eli Lilly rose 5%. Shares of AbbVie and AstraZeneca climbed more than 3%, while J&J and Bristol Myers Squibb’s stocks increased more than 2% each.

The Pfizer deal adds certainty for drugmakers and shifts the president’s policies “potentially away from Pharma tariffs,” BMO Capital Markets analyst Evan Seigerman said in a note on Tuesday.

“Today’s deal seems to set a path for other pharmaceutical players to follow, allowing for headline pricing concessions and a Trump ‘win’ without more punitive implementation” of the president’s so-called most-favored-nation policy or tariffs, Seigerman added.

Trump in May signed an executive order reviving that controversial plan, which aims to tie the prices of some medicines in the U.S. to the significantly lower ones abroad. As part of that effort, Trump in July sent letters to 17 drugmakers — including Pfizer — calling on them to take steps to lower drug prices by Sept. 29.

“As we think about the group more broadly, we would not be surprised to see a number of similar agreements to help remove uncertainty on the [most-favored-nation policy and] tariffs,” JPMorgan analyst Chris Schott said in a note Tuesday.

Most-favored-nation’ risk may be manageable

Tuesday’s deal appeared to bring other good news to some drugmakers.

Pfizer agreed to sell its existing drugs to Medicaid patients at the lowest price offered in other developed nations, or what Trump calls the most-favored-nation price. But Schott said most-favored-nation pricing for Medicaid is “highly manageable” for Pfizer. He said that’s in part because Medicaid pricing is already similar to international levels for most drugs.

Notably, Medicaid represents less than 5% of the company’s U.S. sales and an “even smaller percentage of global sales,” Leerink Partners analyst David Risinger said in a note Tuesday.

Nigel Farage Tops Popularity Charts Among British Teenagers.

October 1, 2025

PULSE POINTS

❓WHAT HAPPENED: Reform Party leader Nigel Farage is the most popular politician among British teenagers aged 13 to 17, surpassing rivals and even celebrities.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: Nigel Farage, British teenagers, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, Conservative (Tory) Party leader Kemi Badenoch, and other leading politicians.

📍WHEN & WHERE: The survey was conducted by Merlin Strategies, with findings relevant to the next British general election, which must be held sometime between now and 2029

💬KEY QUOTE: “Gen-Z is very different. Very different to Millennials. I see a lot more ambition, I see a lot more rejection of what they’re being indoctrinated with at school and university.” – Nigel Farage

🎯IMPACT:Reform’s popularity among teens could significantly influence the next general election, with projections already showing the populist party on track to place first with 311 seats in the House of Commons.

IN FULL

The future of the British political landscape is shifting to the populist right, with a poll finding that Brexit champion and Reform Party leader Nigel Farage is by far the most popular politician among under-18s.

Despite Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s left-wing Labour Partyattempting to smear Farage as a “racist” and the “single greatest threat” to the country’s “way of life,” these attacks do not appear to be resonating with the youth the way they have with older generations.

According to a survey from Merlin Strategies for the New Statesman,of the 13 to 17-year-olds who intend on voting in the next general election—which must be held no later than 2029—33 per cent said that they would vote for Farage’s Reform party, compared to 27 per cent for Labour, and 12 per cent for formerly governing Conservatives (Tories) and the far-left Greens.

Farage’s personal popularityalso stands out, with 38 percent of British teens viewing him favorably, compared to 25 percent for Prime Minister Starmer, 23 percent for far-left former Labourleader Jeremy Corbyn, who is attempting to launch a third party focused on Muslim issues, and just 16 percent for Tory leader Kemi Badenoch.

Notably, Farage’s friend and ally, President Donald J. Trump, is the second-most popular politician among British teens, at 28 percent.

“It’s happening. Gen-Z is very different. Very different to Millennials. I see a lot more ambition, I see a lot more rejection of what they’re being indoctrinated with at school and university,” Farage said of the British youth last June.

Trump Cabinet Chief Reveals Super Creepy Encounter With Jeffrey Epstein Over Massage Table

Tommy ChristopherOct 1st, 2025, 11:48 am

Trump Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnickrevealed a stomach-turning encounter with deceased sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein that occurred over Epstein’s personal massage table.

The now-infamous Epstein “Birthday Book” note that President Donald Trump sued the Wall Street Journal over was released by the House Oversight Committee earlier this month — along with hundreds of pages from the rest of the book.

That book included a crude and shocking cartooncentered around massage, a key element in Epstein’s abuse of girls and young women.

Lutnick was a guest on Wednesday’s edition of the Pod Force One podcast with Miranda Devine, during which he revealed a disturbing brush with Epstein when they were neighbors in 2005— and Epstein showed off his personal massage table:

HOWARD LUTNICK: So his house is like super big, really wide. And so he gives me a tour in the living room, big living room.

And then across from it is double doors. I assume it’s the dining room. (Yeah.).

And he opens the doors and there’s a massage table in the middle of the room and candles all around and stuff.

So I ask very insightful, cutting questions. I say to him, “Massage table in the middle of your house? How often do you have a massage?”

And he says, “Every day.”

And then he like gets like weirdly close to me and he says “And the right kind of massage.”

MIRANDA DEVINE: Ew!

HOWARD LUTNICK: Now my wife is standing here. So she looks at me and I look at her and we say.“I’m sorry. We have to.”

And we left. And in the six or eight steps it takes to get from his house to my house,my wife and I decided that I will never be in the room with that disgusting person ever again.

So I was never in the with him socially, for business or even philanthropy. If that guy was there, I wasn’t going because he’s gross.

Epstein’s Ties to Banks and Hedge Funds Are Far More Extensive Than Previously Thought.

PULSE POINTS

❓WHAT HAPPENED: Newly reported documents have revealed Jeffrey Epstein’s extensive banking activities and transactions before his death.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: Jeffrey Epstein, several banks, hedge funds, and known associates, including the former Bill Clinton-era Treasury Secretary and Barack Obama-era National Economic Council Director Larry Summers.

📍WHEN & WHERE: Before Epstein’s death in 2019, involving banks and entities across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

🎯IMPACT: The House Oversight Committee may issue subpoenas for bank records, potentially leading to further investigations.

IN FULL

Pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein‘s banking and investment activities were more extensive than previously known, involving multiple banks and major transactions with hedge funds. The true extent of Epstein’s investment portfolio and banking ties was revealed after his estate provided Congresswith a list of over 20 banks where he held accounts.

Among the banks wereWells Fargo, TD Bank, and FirstBank Puerto Rico. JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bankhave already faced scrutiny and lawsuits due to their past associations with Epstein, although they claim to have severed ties in 2013 and 2018, respectively.

Documents reveal Epstein transferred significant sums, including $60 million to Honeycomb Partners and $13.5 million from a hedge fund led by Paul Tudor Jones. He also sold $15 million in shares to Blockchain Capital. These transactions occurred in the years leading up to his 2019 death, after his 2008 conviction for procuring a child for prostitution.

Epstein’s financial dealings involved a complex network of entities. Payments were made to known associates likeLarry Summers, the former Bill Clinton-era Treasury Secretary and Barack Obama-era National Economic Council Director, who received $1,232.25 as a travel reimbursement.

The House Oversight Committee is expected to subpoena banks for further records, potentially uncovering more about Epstein’s financial network.
