Rochdale Child Rape Grooming Gang Jailed, Gov’t Failures Exposed, Girl Victim Classified as Prostitute at Just Ten-Years-Old 1/2

A grooming gang ringleader and six of his accomplices were handed jail sentences in a case that highlighted serious government failings, including where the social care system branded a 10-year-old girl a prostitute and did nothing to help her.

Seven men, all Rochdale market traders or taxi drivers, have been handed jail sentences after they groomed young girls between 2001 and 2006 to become “sex slaves”. The girls were “passed around” between the men and hundreds of others for “almost incessant sexual abuse” for years, the court was told.

Mohammed “Boss Man” Zahid, 64, identified as the ringleader of this group, ran a lingerie stall at the Rochdale town market, which he used to meet young girls out shopping, before showering them with gifts as part of the so-called grooming process to make them sexual slaves, the court heard.

Zahid, a Pakistani migrant male, had previously been jailed for five years in 2016 for a separate grooming gang case over sex with a child who, again, he’d met through his market stall. In that case, she had gone to the stall to buy tights for her school uniform.

During the sentencing hearing on Wednesday, the court heard how Zahid felt so “untouchable” that he brazenly telephoned a social services home for children where one of his victims lived, picked her up from there for abuse, and would later drop her off again, all without fear of questions being asked. Zahid and his friendswould take the girls to locations around Rochdale for sex, with ‘Girl A’ telling the court that she had been abused by “hundreds of men”.

While the court case revealed the depravity of the rapists,it also unveiled the appalling failures of what is called the care system. ‘Girl B’, now an adult in her 30s, discovered in her local authority case notes that when she was just 10 years old, the care system had her labelled as a prostitute, yet took no steps to protect her. As she put it, nobody was “concerned enough to do anything about it… They were the ones supposed to care for me and look after me and a lot of bad things happened”.

The Manchester Crown Court sentenced on Wednesday:

2/2

The Manchester Crown Court sentenced on Wednesday:

Pakistani-born market trader Mohammed “Boss Man” Zahid to 35 years in prison. Zahid had been found guilty of 10 counts of rape, four of indecency with a child, one of attempting to procure a girl for unlawful sexual intercourse, and five of procuring a girl for unlawful sexual intercourse.

50-year-old Pakistani-born market trader Kasir Bashir was sentenced in absentia, given that he wasn’t held in pre-trial custody and was able to abscond. His UK passport was taken away as part of his bail conditions, but it is nevertheless thought that he has left the country. Police said “enquiries continue to try and locate him and ensure justice is served.”

Bashir was given 29 years in prison, which he will serve if ever found. He was found guilty of two counts of rape and two counts of indecency with a child.

67-year-old Pakistani-born market trader Mushtaq Ahmed was sentenced to 27 years in prison. He was found guilty of four counts of rape, four counts of indecency with a child, and one count of procuring a girl for unlawful sexual intercourse.

39-year-old Roheez Khan was sentenced to 12 years in prison. He was found guilty of one count of rape.

44-year-old taxi driver Mohammed Shahzad was sentenced to 26 years in prison. He was found guilty of five counts of rape and one count of assault by penetration.

41-year-old taxi driver Nissar Hussain was sentenced to 19 years in prison. He was found guilty of two counts of rape and one count of assault by penetration.

49-year-old taxi driver Naheem Akram was sentenced to 26 years in prison. He was found guilty of six counts of rape and one count of assault by penetration.

All men denied all charges and were said by police to have shown no remorse.

Greater Manchester Police hailed the convictions, saying they now had seen 32 offenders “brought to justice” and a further 20 men due to come to trial in the coming months.

Detective Chief Inspector Guy Laycock said of the case: “These seven men preyed on vulnerability for their own depraved sexual gain. The men abused, degraded and then discarded the victims when they were just children. This horrific abuse knew no limits, despite their denials throughout this lengthy investigation and court case.”

Rochdale Borough Council, which runs the social services implicated in the case, insisted that things had changed. A spokesman said for the council: “Rochdale Borough Council is in a very different place to where it once was more than a decade ago, and our work to improve our safeguarding practice and our response to child sexual exploitation has been recognised in every Ofsted inspection since 2014.

“We will not be complacent, however, and we remain committed to doing all that we can with our partners to protect and support victims and survivors.”

Democrats Seek Healthcare Funds to Help Migrants Not Self-Deport

Neil Munro2 Oct 2025

Democrats are fighting to restart a pipeline of $20 billion in government healthcare aid per yearto help migrants who face rising economic pressure to self-deport homeward.

President Donald Trump’s economic pressureon the migrants has reportedly forced roughly 1.6 million to self-deport. The number is likely to grow as administration officials pressure more businesses to shed illegal workers, impose more fines against migrants’ hard-earned possessions, and change migrants’ calculations.

“There’s no work … We have just made the decision to leave on our own terms,” a self-deporting illegal migrant named Gerardo told CBS News on September 28:

Gerardo says that when he first arrived, he was making up to $1,400 a week working as a truck driver. Today, he makes less than half that. “There’s just not enough work and too many expenses,” he said. “I used to work up to seven days a week. Now, I only work two to three.”

The family says they’ve endured wage theft, eviction, and the loss of Gerardo’s driver’s license after being pulled over. He says language barriers made the encounter with the police even more difficult. “In reality, everything just got so complicated, and that’s why we’ve made the decision to leave back to Mexico,” he said.

Their 9-year-old daughter says she learned English in just two years and appreciates her time in Colorado, but she is happy to leave. “I’m not sad because I am going to see my family over there,” she said.

The migrants’ decisions to go home will help raise Americans’ productivity and living standards, and will provide their home countries with new skills and useful ambitions.

But Democrats want the migrants to stay — and they want the federal government to cover their ballooning healthcare costs.

“Democrats are demanding health care for everybody,” admitted Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), whose California district includes many illegals. “The amount of money that actually is going towards people who are undocumented is such a small portion,” said Rep. Ro Khann.

Without the federal funding, state Democrats in California, Minnesota, and other states will be forced to go through a painful process of cutting funds from their myriad interest groups.

“Democrats care more about illegal aliens than American citizens,” said a post by Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt that names the programs which Democrats used to smuggle federal funding to healthcare for illegal migrants.

The GOP blocked the healthcare funding in the President’s signature spending bill, signed on July 4. But Democrats are closing the government as they try to pressure Trump Republicans to reopen the hidden money flow.

The healthcare funding is smuggled to illegal migrants via multiple spending accounts and myriad legal classifications, all of which is hidden behind a law barring illegal migrants from Medicaid spending.

For example, President Joe Biden’s pro-migration border chief,Ali Mayorkas, granted a quasi-legal status to roughly 3 million illegals via the “humanitarian parole” and “Temporary Protected Status” programs. This legal maneuver allowed the illegal migrants to legally get federal healthcare aid.

Similarly, Biden’s deputies allowed California to get a legal waiver from federal rules, so allowing the state to be compensated with federal funds withen it spends state funds on healthcare for illegals.

Pro-migration lobbies want the healthcare funding for the millions of hard-working migrants imported by Democrats from poor countries with little healthcare.

“There is no California without Latinx Californians, and recent state and federal cuts put their health and well-being at serious risk,” the California Immigrant Policy Center claimedon September 4.“State leaders must take bold action to protect and restore access to food, housing, health care, and education for all Californians.”

The GOP’s message is straightforward.

Since the July bill-signing,“2.3 million ineligible enrollees have been kicked off of Medicaid… [and if the Democrats get their way,] American taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars would be paying for benefits for illegal aliens again,” Speaker Mike Johnson told CNN on October 1. “We’re not doing that.”

“Very often, [a citizen] in the emergency room waiting is an illegal alien, very often it’s a person who can’t speak English,” Vice President JD Vance said Wednesday. “Why do those people get health care benefits at hospitals paid for by American citizens?”

Germany nabs 3 suspected Hamas operatives for planning to kill Israelis, local Jews

German prosecutors say police recovered an AK-47, several pistols and ammo intended to be used in deadly attacks on Israeli or Jewish institutions

By AGENCIES and TOI STAFF

1 Oct 2025, 8:12 pm

German police arrested three men they suspect of preparing a serious attack against Jewish targets in Germany for Hamas, prosecutors said on Wednesday, a week before the second anniversary of the Palestinian Islamist terror group’s attack on Israel.

Prosecutors suspect the three men of being foreign operatives for Hamas and of being involved in procuring firearms and ammunition to be used for assassinations targeting Israeli or Jewish institutions in Germany, they said.

“In the course of today’s arrests, various weapons, including an AK-47 assault rifle and several pistols, as well as a considerable amount of ammunition, were found,” the federal prosecutors said in a statement.

The three, identified in line with German privacy laws only as German citizen Abed Al G., Wael F. M., born in Lebanon, and German citizen Ahmad I., were arrested in Berlin on Wednesday. A security source said the three were in their 30s or 40s.

Reuters was not immediately able to contact lawyers for the accused.

Hamas, which has been running Gaza and is backed by Iran, is designated as a terrorist organization by the European Union and a number of other countries including the United States.

In February, four Hamas members suspected of plotting attacks on Jewish institutions in Europe went on trial in Berlin in what prosecutors described as the first court case against Hamas terrorists in Germany.

Anti-terrorism investigators observed the accused meeting in Berlin for a weapon handover before operational forces intervened and discovered functional weapons, including a Glock pistol, said a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office.

Forensic technicians are examining the arsenal and searches have also taken place in the eastern city of Leipzig, where one of the suspects lives. Authorities also conducted a search in Oberhausen in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the spokesperson added.

Germany is one of Israel’s strongest allies due to the legacy of the Holocaust and security is tight at synagogues and other Jewish institutions. It did not join France, Britain and several other countries last month in defying Israeli wishes and recognizing Palestinian statehood, a move that both Israel and the Trump administration have denounced as a reward for the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, terror onslaught that started the ongoing Gaza war….

Vought: Mass firings will begin ‘in a day or two’

The Trump administration has threatened to inflict maximum pain on Democrats during the shutdown.

Meredith Lee Hill

MEREDITH LEE HILL

10/01/2025, 6:51PM ET

OMB chief Russ Vought told House Republicans on a private call Wednesday that the administration will start mass reduction in force moves, or firings, of federal workers “in a day or two,” according to four people granted anonymity to describe the call.

Vought and President Donald Trump have both threatened to inflict maximum pain on Democrats during the shutdownas Senate Republicans hope to peel off additional Democrats in the coming days to vote for the GOP-led stopgap to end the standoff. A bipartisan group of senators also discussed several early off-ramp ideas on the floor earlier Wednesday.

Hill GOP leaders have been wary of embracing Trump’s promises to slash federal workers and “benefits” during the shutdown, especially given the blowback some Republicans in competitive districts will face.

Some Republicans in safe red districts raised concerns Wednesday. Rep. Blake Moore of Utah, a member of Johnson’s leadership team who also represents an Air Force base in his district, raised concerns on the call about firing federal workers, especially given the recent need for the administration to re-hire some fired under DOGE. Rep. Brian Babin of Texas, who chairs the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, echoed similar concerns, and noted the potential impact to the scientific community and national research labs.

Vought also warned that money is about to run out for both the nutrition program for low-income moms and babies, known as WIC, and for pay for active-duty members of the military.

Troops are set to miss paychecks starting Oct. 15 if the government remains closed. Lawmakers in both chambers are preparing legislation to pay troops amid the shutdown, but GOP leaders will wait before making a call to put such a bill to a vote, given it lessens their leverage on Democrats, according to three other people with direct knowledge granted anonymity. Leaders are so far sticking to the argument that Democrats need to approve the clean, seven week stopgap if they want to pay troops.

Vought also said billions in infrastructure money for New York, the home state of both Democratic leaders, is being “reviewed.”

Speaker Mike Johnson told Republicans on the call that because of fraud, serious reforms are needed for the Affordable Care Act tax credits Democrats are demanding an extension of in the shutdown standoff. In response to a question from Rep. Rick Allen (R-Ga.), Johnson said that Vice President JD Vance said at the White House briefing that there is a time to negotiate health care, but now is not that time.

Allen railed against any ACA extension deal, detailing how how expensive it would be. He also pushed to bring back efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare altogether.

Overall, Vought didn’t provide a lot of details for House Republicans during the call. “He was surprisingly vague on everything,” said another person with direct knowledge of it.

Also on Wednesday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters at a briefing that the federal layoffs would happen “very soon.” Democrats, she claimed, are forcing the administration’s hand — and are at fault for the upcoming upheaval.

“Unfortunately, because the Democrats shut down the government, the president has directed his cabinet, and the Office of Management and Budget is working with agencies across the board, to identify where cuts can me made,” she said. “And we believe that layoffs are imminent. They are unfortunately a consequence of this government shutdown.”

As the shutdown approached, congressional Democrats refused to bend to White House pressure over its reduction-in-force plans. Now, the administration insists it will follow through.

“If they’re so worried about the effect this is having on the American people, and they should be, what they should do is reopen the government,” Vice President JD Vance told reporters at the briefing. “Not complain about how we respond to the fact that Chuck Schumer and the Democrats have shut down the government in the first place.”

Canada issues warning for citizens with gender-neutral passports travelling to U.S.

Global Affairs says 'X' marker may not be recognized at the border

The Canadian government is warning citizens who list "X" as their gender on their passports could have problems entering the U.S. and other countries.

In a change made in recent days, the Department of Global Affairs added an advisory to its United States travel advice page for 2SLGBTQ+ Canadian passport holders.

"While the Government of Canada issues passports with an 'X' gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries," it wrote. "You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the 'X' gender identifier."

Elizabeth Thompson · CBC News · Posted: Oct 01, 2025 3:05 PM EDT | Last Updated: October 1

The notice advises that Canadians "may still be asked to provide your sex/gender information as either male or female when travelling."

The move comes months after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the U.S. government to only recognize two sexes: male and female. The order also directed that all documents issued by the U.S. federal government refer to "sex" rather than "gender."

Trump's executive order is before the courts, with the administration seeking to lift a U.S. district court order that barred the State Department from enforcing Trump's policy to restrict the issuance of U.S. passports that recognize genders other than male and female.

Thank you Canada for preventing them from coming. Keep them there.

Plan to pump 45,000 gallons of RADIOACTIVE water into New York's Hudson River

DT 01 Oct 2025 By STACY l

A controversial plan to release 45,000 gallons of radioactive water into the Hudson River has been approved in court.

A federal judge ruled in favor of New Jersey-based Holtec International, which sued New York last year to challenge the state's ban on discharging radiological substances from its defunct Indian Point nuclear plant.

Holtec's attorneys argued that New York overstepped its authority when it passed the 'Save the Hudson' bill in August 2023, a measure aimed at protecting the Hudson Valley from wastewater linked to the shuttered nuclear facility.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed the bill into law after it passed both chambers of the state legislature unanimously. The law updated state environmental regulations and established fines for violations aimed at protecting the Hudson River.

More than 100,000 people get their drinking water from the Hudson River, which has undergone extensive clean-up efforts over the past few decades.

However, US District Judge Kenneth Karas ruled last week that New York's ban was unconstitutional, affirming that the federal government alone can regulate discharges from the decommissioned nuclear facility.

The Indian Point nuclear power plant, located just south of Peekskill, permanently shut down in 2021 after nearly six decades of operation

Within weeks of the closure, the facility was sold to Holtec International, which specializes in dismantling retired nuclear plants and managing spent nuclear fuel.

Holtec has argued that wastewater discharges fall under the oversight of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Company officials also note that controlled releases have been standard practice at nuclear plants for decades. They also do not plan on releasing 45,000 gallons immediately.

Critics, however, contend that Holtec has other options, including storing the water on-site in sealed containers instead of releasing it into the Hudson.

Patrick O'Brien, director of government affairs and communications for Holtec International, told Patch that the company was disappointed that the 2023 bill was passed, saying: 'The scientific facts show that discharge to the river is the safest option for dealing with the processed and treated water.'

'Radiological discharge is the sole purview of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and we hope the governor's office reviews, concursand vetoes the legislation based on the assessment that radiological discharge is federally preempted,' O'Brien added.

'The treated water is monitored and sampled to ensure that it meets regulatory requirements before it is released andwill be a small fraction of the 3 millirem total annual limit imposed by the NRC.'

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins told the Hudson Independent: 'The Hudson is the lifeblood of our region, a source of recreation, natural beauty and economic vitality, and we cannot allow it to become a dumping ground for radioactive waste.

EXCLUSIVE: Deportation Machine Will Carry On Despite Government Shutdown

Jason HopkinsOctober 01, 2025 3:25 PM ET

Federal immigration agents will not be fazed by Washington, D.C.’s government shutdown, with nationwide arrests and deportations to continue as usual.

The federal government shutdown became official at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday after Congress failed to pass a stopgap funding bill before the deadline. While all non-essential operations will be paused until funding is restored, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that its mission to carry out large-scale deportation operations will not slow down.

“Despite a lapse in funding, ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] will continue to remove the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens including rapists, pedophiles, murderers, gang members and terrorists from our country,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Thanks to the Trump Administration’s signature piece of legislation, the One Big Beautiful Bill, we will continue to hire, train, and deploy law enforcement across the country to make America safe again.”

“Democratic politicians have villainized our brave ICE law enforcement calling them the Nazi Gestapo, the Secret Police, and kidnappers, and now they are putting our officers’ families under financial strains,” McLaughlin continued.

The spending fight largely revolves over whether a short-term bill would extend enhanced Affordable Care Act premium subsidies set to expire after 2025. Democratic leaders are demanding that the legislation extend the enhanced tax credits, while Republicans have pushed their own package and argue Democrats have forced a shutdown in an attempt to gain leverage.

Deportation agents remained vigilant just hours before the government shutdown officially took effect.

Immigration agents in Texas arrested Mauricio Ibarra-Cruz, a Mexican illegal migrant convicted of sexual assault of a child, and Joshua Alexander Cortez-Ramirez, a Mexican illegal migrant convicted of child cruelty and sex with a minor in California, on Tuesday. ICE agents also nabbed a Mexican illegal migrant convicted of second-degree murder in Los Angeles, California, a Guatemalan illegal migrant convicted of assault with a dangerous weapon in Framingham, Massachusetts and a Chinese national convicted of alien smuggling that same day.

Details over the latest arrest come at a fraught time for the agency, where assaults against ICE agents have purportedly increased more than 1,000% and sanctuary lawmakers have publicly demonized them.

In September, an ICE facility was targeted by sniper fire by an individual appearing to hold anti-ICE sentiment. The alleged shooter, Joshua Jahn, left behind writings about how he wanted to “give ICE agents real terror” and scribbled “anti-ICE” onto shell casings before opening fire at the facility, ultimately killing two detainees.

Just days after the Dallas ICE attack, hundreds of rioters blocked the gates of an ICE processing center in Illinois and chanted “arrest ICE, shoot ICE.” Such anti-ICE rhetoric and attacks have continued as Democratic lawmakers have demanded ICE agents conduct their operations with no face coverings, potentially leaving them to be doxxed by the public.

DHS, the department that oversees the ongoing deportation operations, reiterated that its mission will continue — despite the demonization by Democratic politicians and the government shutdown.

“They might put politics first, but we won’t — the deportations will continue,” McLaughlin stated. “We will continue to put the safety of the American people FIRST.”

Trump touts shutdown as ‘unprecedented opportunity’ to cut more Democratic priorities

PUBLISHED THU, OCT 2 20258:45

KEY POINTS

• President Donald Trump said Democrats gave him an “unprecedented opportunity” to slash government agencies during the government shutdown.

• The Trump administration recently said it froze about $18 billion for New York City infrastructure projects and canceled another $8 billion for climate projects in Democratic-leaning states.

• Trump said he will meet with Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought, a Project 2025 author, to discuss cutting what he called “Democrat Agencies.”

President Donald Trump on Thursday said Democrats have given him an “unprecedented opportunity” to slash federal agencies, signaling plans to harm his political opponents during the two-day-old government shutdown while blaming them for causing it.

Trump’s warning came a day after his administration froze about $18 billion for two major infrastructure projects in New York City and canceled roughly $8 billion more for climate-related projects in Democratic-leaning states.

Both of the funding halts were first announced by Russell Vought, the director of the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, not by the departments that have oversight over the projects.

Trump said he will soon meet with Vought “to determine which of the many Democrat Agencies, most of which are a political SCAM, he recommends to be cut.”

The two men will also weigh “whether or not those cuts will be temporary or permanent,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“I can’t believe the Radical Left Democrats gave me this unprecedented opportunity,” he added.

Vought was a key author of Project 2025, the conservative blueprint for massively reforming the U.S. government.

Trump repeatedly disavowed Project 2025 while running for president, saying he and his campaign had “nothing to do with it.”

But in Thursday’s post, Trump touted Vought as “he of PROJECT 2025 Fame.”

It was unclear when Trump and Vought were scheduled to meet. The White House responded to a request for details about the meeting with an automated message blaming Democrats for the shutdown and warning that its correspondence with the press may be delayed as a result.

The federal shutdown began Wednesday after a divided Congress could not pass a bill to keep the government fully funded past the fiscal year that ended Tuesday.

Republicans, who hold the White House and slim majorities in the House and Senate, wanted to pass a stopgap bill to maintain funding at current levels until late November.

Democrats, whose support is needed to overcome the 60-vote Senate filibuster, want any short-term funding to include an extension of enhanced Obamacare tax credits, which are due to lapse at year’s end. The enhanced subsidies reduce the costs of health insurance premiums for a wider swath of Affordable Care Act enrollees.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that Democrats are negotiating like “terrorists.”

Bessent also said he “can guarantee there’s not going to be an agreement” with regard to the dispute over the ACA credits.

The Trump administration, in a memo released by Vought’s OMB, had warned federal agencies last week to prepare for mass firings in the event of a shutdown.

Trump, asked about that memo, said, “there could be firings and that’s their fault.”

“We could cut projects that they wanted, favorite projects, and they’d be permanently cut,” he said in an interview with conservative news outlet OAN….

The federal government is in day two of a Schumer Shutdown and several agencies are making clear which party is responsible for the lapse in funding.

Visitors to the websites of the Departments of Treasury, State, Housing and Urban Development, Agriculture, Health and Human Services, and Justice all blame Democrats for the shutdown in what some on the left allege is a violation of the Hatch Act.

Treasury: “The radical left has chosen to shut down the United States government in the name of reckless spending and obstructionism. As a result, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s websites will only be sporadically updated until this shutdown concludes. Please refer to Treasury’s contingency plans for more information."

State: "Federal Government Shutdown. Due to the Democrat-led shutdown, website updates will be limited until full operations resume."

HUD: "The Radical Left in Congress shut down the government. HUD will use available resources to help Americans in need."

USDA: "Due to the Radical Left Democrat shutdown, this government website will not be updated during the funding lapse. President Trump has made it clear he wants to keep the government open and support those who feed, fuel, and clothe the American people."

HHS: "Mission-critical activities of HHS will continue during the Democrat-led government shutdown. Please use this site as a resource as the Trump Administration works to reopen the government for the American people."

DOJ: "Democrats have shut down the government. Department of Justice websites are not currently regularly updated. Please refer to the Department of Justice’s contingency planfor more information."

Asked about the ethics complaint, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle told CBS News "the Democrats' petty political games are unnecessarily hurting the most vulnerable Americans in our society. Why is the media more focused on a banner than reporting on the impact of a Democrat shutdown on the American people?"

White House Uses Shutdown to Maximize Pain and Punish Political Foes

The Trump administration forged ahead with plans to conduct mass layoffs, as the fiscal standoff appeared to intensify.

Published Oct. 1, 2025

Updated Oct. 2, 2025, 9:19 a.m. ET

The Trump administration took steps on Wednesday to maximize the pain of the government shutdown, halting billions of dollars in funds for Democratic-led states while readying a plan to lay off potentially droves of civil servants imminently.

The moves by the White House appeared both unprecedented and punitive, underscoring the risks of a fiscal stalemate that had no end in sight. It also evinced how President Trump might try to leverage the government-wide closure to achieve his agenda, slash the budget and exact revenge on his political enemies.

In a series of social media posts, Russell T. Vought, the White House budget director, said the administrationhad paused or moved to cancel the delivery of about $26 billion in previously approved fundsacross a range of programs, describing the money as wasteful or in need of further review.

The timing seemed to be no mere coincidence, nor were Mr. Vought’s choices of location. He said the administration was terminating one tranche of funds, totaling about $8 billion, because it was “Green New Scamfunding to fuel the Left’s climate agenda,” a move that affected projects in 16 states, most of which are led by Democrats.

In a second instance, the Trump administration paused about $18 billion in approved infrastructure funding for two major transportation projects primarily in New York City, whose state delegation includes Senator Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader, and Representative Hakeem Jeffries, the House minority leader. The two men have been frequent targets of Mr. Trump’s personal attacks, and the Transportation Department said the money would be held pending further review.

Mr. Vought’s budget maneuvers marked an attempt to formalize Mr. Trump’s threat from a day earlier, when he described a shutdown as a “good” opportunity to cut federal agencies, programs and benefits he disfavors in ways that would harm Democrats. He said at the time that it could include another round of mass layoffs targeting “a lot” of government workers.

By Wednesday, those cuts appeared imminent. Speaking privately with House Republicans, Mr. Vought said the firings, known as a reduction in force, could go into effect in the next day or two, according to a member on the call.

Vice President JD Vance later echoed the need for layoffs in a briefing at the White House, saying the firings would preserve “essential services,” even though such cuts have not been required in past instances when the government had to halt its operations.

Taken together, the administration’s actions laid bare the risks and consequences of a protracted fiscal stalemate under Mr. Trump. With an expansive view of executive power, the president has spared no opportunity in his second term to shutter agencies, slim down the federal work force and reconfigure the budget, with aggressive tactics that have tested the courts and, at times, defied Congress.

The shutdown began at midnight, the start of the new fiscal year, after Democrats and Republicans failed to reach a short-term spending truce. G.O.P. leaders sought to extend existing funding levels into November, but Democrats in the Senate rejected that approach, partly because it did not preserve a set of expiring subsidies that help millions of Americans pay for their health insurance….

MAHA Push Sees Walmart Ditch Synthetic Dyes, Sweeteners, and Other Additives.

October 1, 2025

PULSE POINTS

❓WHAT HAPPENED:Walmart announced it will remove synthetic dyes, artificial sweeteners, and over 30 other additives from its store brands in compliance with the “Make America Healthy Again” agenda.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED:Walmart, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and the Trump administration.

📍WHEN & WHERE:Changes are expected to be fully implemented by January 2027, with reformulated products hitting shelves in the coming months.

💬KEY QUOTE:“Our customers have told us that they want products made with simpler, more familiar ingredients—and we’ve listened.” – John Furner, Walmart U.S. CEO

🎯IMPACT:Walmart’s reformulation is expected to improve over 1,000 products and aligns with broader efforts to improve food quality and public health.

IN FULL

U.S. retail giant Walmart says it will eliminate synthetic dyes, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and over 30 other additives from all of its store brands. The changes are set to impact over 1,000 products ranging from salty snacks to salad dressings and power drinks. Reformulated items will begin appearing on shelves in the coming months, with a full rollout expected by January 2027.

“Our customers have told us that they want products made with simpler, more familiar ingredients—and we’ve listened,” said John Furner, President and CEO of Walmart U.S.

Notably, the move aligns the company with the Trump administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) initiative, which aims to address the underlying factors contributing to the nation’s growing health issues. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has worked closely with companies like Walmart, PepsiCo, and Tyson Foods to phase out synthetic food dyes and other controversial additives.

In addition to Walmart’s efforts, the Department of Agriculture (USDA) andHHS have collaborated to restrict food stamp purchases to healthier options, cutting out sugary drinks and candy. At least 12 states have received waivers to adjust their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) guidelines accordingly.

“We are spending $405 million a day on SNAP, and about 10 percent is going to sugary drinks. If you add candies to that,it’s about 13-17 percent,” Kennedy said, emphasizing the need for healthier food options. He believes that taxpayers “should not be paying to feed the poorest kids in the country food that will give them diabetes.”
