Kazakhstan Launches First All-Female Space Isolation Experiment SANA-1
2 October 2025
ASTANA – A unique research project, SANA-1, was launched at the National Space Center, marking Kazakhstan’s first experiment involving long-term crew isolation under conditions simulating space flight.
The project is jointly implemented by the Aerospace Committee of the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development, Eurasian Space Ventures, and leading national scientific and educational institutions.
A distinctive feature of SANA-1 is its all-female crew of four specialists from organizations under the Aerospace Committee: Yuliya Bakirova (commander), Assem Kuandyk, Daria Komarova, and Linara Zhadygerova.
For 10 days, they will remain inside a ground-based spacecraft simulator developed by Eurasian Ventures Group at the initiative of cosmonaut and Hero of Kazakhstan Aidyn Aimbetov, reported the ministry’s press service on Oct. 1.
During the mission, the researchers will conduct medical, psychological, and team-dynamics studies, as well as educational experiments. The scientific program is led by Dr. Alina Gutoreva, PhD in Psychology and head of the AI Lab at the Kazakh-British Technical University.
The SANA-1 project is Kazakhstan’s first comprehensive study integrating psychological, medical, and engineering aspects of human spaceflight. It aims to strengthen the country’s space research capabilities, inspire youth in STEM, and highlight women’s growing role in science.
The all-female crew symbolizes a new step toward gender equality and Kazakhstan’s readiness to prepare its own researchers for future space missions.

Exoplanet without a sun found gobbling up 6 billion tons of gas and dust per second
October 2, 2025
Scientists have identified a lone planet with a ferocious appetite. Located in the Chamaeleon constellation roughly 620 light-years away, the rogue planet, named Cha 1107-7626, exists in the vast emptiness of space, far from the warmth of any star.
Rogue planets like this one are cosmic drifters — worlds that roam the galaxy untethered, unlike the familiar planets bound to a solar system. Most rogue planets are thought to be cold, silent wanderers. But Cha 1107-7626 is different.
"People may think of planets as quiet and stable worlds, but with this discovery we see that planetary-mass objects freely floating in space can be exciting places," Víctor Almendros-Abad, an astronomer at the Astronomical Observatory of Palermo, National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), Italy and lead author of the new study in a statement.
For instance, Cha 1107-7626 is not just drifting through interstellar space — it's feeding.
Using the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT), astronomers have caught it pulling in gas and dust at an astonishing rate: six billion tons every single second.
Never before has a rogue planet, or any planet, been observed growing this fast. "This is the strongest accretion episode ever recorded for a planetary-mass object," Almendros-Abad said.
With a mass equivalent to between five and 10 Jupiters, Cha 1107-7626 is one of the lowest-mass free-floating planets known to host a disk and show active accretion.
Observations from ESO's VLT and NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) reveal telltale signs of a rich, evolving system: infrared excess from 4 to 12 microns, silicate features at 10 microns (similar to those in stars and brown dwarfs), hydrocarbon emission lines pointing to a carbon-rich disk, and multiple signatures of ongoing accretion.
Together, these make Cha 1107-7626 the clearest case yet of disk-driven growth in a planetary-mass object — a true poster child for how rogue planets can build themselves in the dark.
"The origin of rogue planets remains an open question: are they the lowest-mass objects formed like stars, or giant planets ejected from their birth systems?" wondered the study's co-author Aleks Scholz, an astronomer at the University of St. Andrews in the United Kingdom, in the statement.
Moreover, Cha 1107-7626 isn't growing at a steady pace — it surges. The team used VLT equipped with the X-shooter spectrograph, along with JWST data and archival observations from the VLT's SINFONI instrument, to catch the planet during a "growth spurt," or burst of accretion.
By comparing the light it emitted before and during the burst, the team was able to piece together clues about the process.
Cha 1107-7626's violent growth spurt appears to have been fueled by its magnetic field, which is a process previously only observed in stars.
Even more surprising, the chemistry of its disk shifted during the burst, with water vapor appearing only while the accretion was underway.
The discovery suggests at least some rogue planets may grow much like stars, since similar bursts of accretion have been seen in stellar nurseries. Detecting these free-floating worlds is notoriously difficult — they're faint and elusive — but that could soon change.
With the upcoming Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), equipped with the world's largest mirror and operating under the darkest skies, astronomers will be able to track down more of these lone planets and reveal just how star-like they truly are.
"This discovery blurs the line between stars and planets and gives us a sneak peek into the earliest formation periods of rogue planets," Belinda Damian, an astronomer at the University of St. Andrews, said in the statement.
"The idea that a planetary object can behave like a star is awe-inspiring and invites us to wonder what worlds beyond our own could be like during their nascent stages," ESO astronomer Amelia Bayo said in the statement.

“We’re Able to See It from Space”: New Clues Point to a Vast Ocean on Ancient Mars
October 2, 2025
Billions of years ago, water moved across the surface of Mars, altering its landscape.
While most scientists agree that ancient rivers carved channels into the Martian terrain, it remains unclear whether these rivers flowed into a larger ocean.
A recent study published in Geophysical Research Letters suggests that Mars displays clear geological signs indicating that these rivers once emptied into a massive body of water in its northern hemisphere.
The finding not only adds weight to the long-debated “northern ocean hypothesis” but also provides clues for where Martian life might have once existed.
Rivers, Deltas, and Backwater Zones
For decades, scientists have studied images of dried riverbeds, channels, and sedimentary deposits scattered across the Martian surface.
Many planetary scientists interpret these features as possible evidence for an ancient ocean that may have once covered the planet’s northern lowlands.
To test the ocean hypothesis, lead author Cory Hughes, a Ph.D. student at the University of Arkansas, and associate professor John Shaw focused on how rivers behave as they approach the ocean.
On Earth, rivers slow down when they enter a large, still body of water. This decrease in velocity causes sediment to settle out and form into deltas. River channel belts also begin to narrow as they approach an ocean.
This narrowing occurs in what geologists call a backwater zone, which can extend for hundreds of miles inland. For example, the backwater zone of the Mississippi River begins near Baton Rouge, more than 200 miles upstream from the Gulf of Mexico.
Using orbital imagery, Hughes identified Martian river systems that show similar backwater narrowing. “This is a large-scale process taking place, which is why we’re able to see it from space on Mars,” Hughes said.
He proposes that the presence of mature deltas and long backwater zones is strong evidence that ancient rivers once flowed into a large body of water.
Parallel in Arkansas
The team also examined other areas of Earth for comparison. The Wedington Sandstone in northwest Arkansas is home to an ancient river delta that formed approximately 300 million years ago.
Over time, erosion washed away most remnants, leaving only the sandstone ridges that were once at the bottom of the river. These are referred to as inverted ridges or inverted channel belts and are formed through the process of topographic inversion.
By studying these formations, Hughes and Shaw refined their understanding of how inverted deltas form and what they should look like in satellite imagery.
The surface of Mars contains similar inverted ridges as the surrounding softer rock eroded away. The parallels between these features and the Wedington Sandstone provide a rare Earth-based parallel for interpreting another planet.
“I literally came here to study this without knowing it was in the backyard,” Hughes said. “No better word can describe that besides serendipity.”
Extraterrestrial Implications
The discovery provides new evidence in support of a northern Martian ocean. If confirmed, it suggests that Mars once had not only rivers and lakes but also a functioning hydrological system on a planetary scale.
This would drastically increase the chances that the planet could have supported microbial ecosystems in the past.
As Hughes explains, “We don’t know of any lifeforms on Earth, or anywhere in the universe, that don’t require liquid water. So the more liquid water we have on Mars, a simple argument could be made that you have a higher chance of life.”
The study also identifies new targets for future exploration. On Earth, deltas and backwater zones are known to trap sediment and preserve organic material, as well as other records of past life.
Investigating similar sites on Mars could help guide the search for evidence of past habitability on the Red Planet.

Dutch F-35 scores first ‘Kill’ after shooting down Russian drone over Poland
2 October 2025
A Dutch F-35A fighter jet has been awarded its first ‘drone kill’ emblem after shooting down a Russian drone that violated Polish airspace on September 9.
The incident occurred during a major drone incursion involving multiple Russian Shahed-type drones, prompting a coordinated NATO response with Polish F-16s.
The F-35, tail number F-027, is part of NATO’s enhanced air policing mission in Poland. A white drone silhouette has been painted below its canopy rail to mark the confirmed kill — a symbolic first for the Dutch F-35 fleet.
Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans highlighted the mission as proof of NATO’s vigilance on its eastern flank.
The Netherlands will continue its air policing mission until December 1, 2025, after which it plans to deploy Patriot missiles, NASAMS, and counter-drone systems to Poland.

Drone Strikes on Ukraine: Odesa Rail Depot Ablaze, Chornobyl NPP in Blackout
Oct. 2, 2025, 9:20 am
Russian drones pounded Ukraine, setting Odesa’s rail depot ablaze and knocking out power to the Chornobyl nuclear plant in one of the most dangerous strikes in months.
Russian troops attacked the Kyiv region with drones early on Oct. 2. A non-operational sanatorium caught fire, and one person was injured in the strikes.
The State Emergency Service (DSNS) reported that a two-story building of an unused sanatorium in Bucha ignited after a UAV attack.
The fire, which covered 600 square meters, was extinguished by 2.13 a.m. Rescuers found a man born in 1977 with injuries.
Kyiv Regional Military Administration (OVA) head Mykola Kalashnyk confirmed that a 50-year-old man suffered shrapnel wounds to his right leg and was hospitalized.
Explosions were also reported in Odesa. Mayor Hennady Trukhanov urged residents to stay in shelters as UAVs struck the city, with the central and Peresypsky districts under threat with two people injured.
Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba said Russia targeted a Ukrzaliznytsia depot in Odesa, injuring a train driver. Rail infrastructure in northern border communities, including Konotop, was also struck, delaying some trains in the Chernihiv and Sumy directions.
“Another difficult night for Ukraine. Massive strikes hit Odesa and the region, while dozens of drones targeted peaceful settlements in the Kyiv region. The enemy is also striking the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions,” he wrote on Telegram.
Later, the head of the Odesa OVA, Oleh Kiper, reported on Telegram that power outages occurred across the region following a massive overnight Russian attack.
According to Kiper, Russian forces once again targeted civilian infrastructure. Despite the efforts of air defense units, one transport infrastructure facility was damaged.
Power outages were reported, and energy workers managed to restore electricity where technically possible.
“Currently, 11.3 thousand customers already have electricity. Another 46.6 thousand remain temporarily without power. Repair work is ongoing,” Kiper said.
The strike also damaged a private house, affecting its roof and windows. Units of the DSNS are currently working to eliminate the consequences of the attack.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russian troops launched an attack with 86 attack UAVs, including Shahed, Geran, and other types of drones.
The assault was repelled by Ukrainian aviation, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, as well as mobile fire groups of the Defense Forces.
Preliminary data as of 09:00 indicate that air defense forces shot down or suppressed 53 Shahed, Geran, and other types of drones over the north, south, and east of the country. At the same time, 31 attack UAVs struck six locations.
Meanwhile, Russia struck Ukraine’s energy sector again. On Oct. 1, a drone attack on an electrical substation in Slavutych left the city without power or water and caused a blackout at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) for more than three hours.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said over 20 Shahed drones were used in a coordinated wave strike, with some shot down.
He emphasized that the blackout cut power to the New Safe Confinement facility, which contains over 3,250 tons of spent nuclear fuel. Power was later restored, and officials confirmed radiation levels remained safe.
“The Russians could not have known that the strike on facilities in Slavutych would have such consequences for Chornobyl,” Zelensky said, calling on the international community to respond firmly to Russia’s actions.
The strikes also left over 300,000 people in Chernihiv and the surrounding region without electricity. Emergency schedules for rolling blackouts were introduced, and police increased patrols in darkened areas.
“Russia is trying to destroy our infrastructure every day - railways, roads, energy. The aggressor uses weapons that rely on foreign components, so sanctions must be tightened and supply chains blocked,” Kuleba wrote.

Drone strike in Ethiopia’s Amhara leaves four dead, 10 injured
02 October 2025 | 10:13
A drone strike on a health post in Ethiopia’s Amhara regional state has killed four civilians, including a pregnant woman, and left more than ten others injured, eyewitnesses told APA on Thursday.
The attack occurred last Saturday around 12:00 AM local time in Gubalafto district, North Wollo Zone of the Amhara region where intense fighting has continued between federal troops and rebels also called Fano forces.
The strike targeted the Sanka Health Post, located 20 kilometers from Woldia, the zonal capital.
According to reports by different media outlets, three people died instantly: a mother and father caring for their children, and the father of a patient who had been treated at the health post for two months.
The fourth victim was a pregnant woman who had come to deliver.
More than ten people were injured, including the six-year-old child of a health professional. Eight of the wounded were staff members of the health post.
The injured were transported to Woldia Hospital on Monday, two days after the attack, once roads were opened for transportation.
A health professional who works at the health post confirmed that six patients, including the health post’s cleaner, were admitted to the hospital, with three undergoing surgery.
Residents said there were no clashes between government forces and Fano fighters inside Sanka town at the time of the strike.
However, heavy fighting was reported in areas surrounding Woldia, particularly near Tikur Wuha.
The latest strike adds to a series of reported drone attacks linked to the conflict between federal forces and Fano fighters in the Amhara region.

French Navy Seizes Russian “Shadow-Fleet” Vessel Suspected of Launching Mystery Drones Into NATO Airspace
October 2, 2025
French naval forces intercepted and detained two crew members aboard the oil tanker Boracay—a vessel long suspected of being part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” and now under fresh scrutiny for possible links to the recent wave of mystery drone incursions into NATO airspace.
The arrests of the two crew members from the Boracay, a vessel long suspected of being part of Russia’s shadow fleet, represent a significant development.
This is one of the strongest indications yet that Russia may be orchestrating the drone incursions recently reported in NATO airspace, underscoring the far-reaching logistical networks behind these aerial disruptions.
The arrests come on the heels of a sweeping wave of mystery drone incursions targeting sensitive sites across NATO countries over the past week.
These incursions, which involve unidentified drones flying over military installations and critical infrastructure, have caused significant disruptions.
Denmark has borne the brunt, with flights forcing the temporary closure of major hubs including Copenhagen, Oslo, Aalborg, and Billund airports.
Since September 22, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania, France, and Germany have also reported drones operating near military installations and critical infrastructure.
Taken together, the incidents suggest a coordinated effort to probe Europe’s defenses, intensifying questions about who is directing the flights and how they are being launched.
According to reports, the French military first boarded the Boracay on September 27, ordering the tanker to anchor off Saint-Nazaire.
French prosecutor Stéphane Kellenberger told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that two crew members—who identified themselves as the ship’s captain and first mate—were taken into custody for “failure to justify the nationality of the vessel” and “refusal to cooperate.”
Citing military and intelligence sources, several Danish media outlets reported that the French raid was ultimately prompted by suspicions that the Boracay had been used as a launch platform for the recent mystery drone incursions in NATO airspace.
Shipping records indicate that the Boracay departed from Primorsk, Russia, on September 20, officially bound for India. Its route took it through the North Sea and past Danish and German waters, as the mystery drone incursions were first being reported, from September 22 to 25.
During that same period, maritime trackers also logged two other Russian commercial vessels—the Oslo Carrier 3 and Astrol-1—alongside the Russian Ropucha-class landing ship Aleksandr Shabalin operating in waters off Denmark.
French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking at a summit of European Union leaders in Copenhagen, Denmark, declined to definitively confirm a link between Boracay and the drone events in NATO airspace, calling the French seizure of the vessel an “intervention.”
“I think it’s a good thing that this work has been done and that we’ve been able to stop it,” Macron told reporters. “There were some very serious wrongdoings made by this crew, which is why there are legal proceedings in the case.”
Asked about the seizure of the Boracay and arrests of its crew, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declined to comment on the ongoing investigation but underscored the broader threat posed by Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.”
1/2
“I can say in more general terms that we are facing a lot of problems with the shadow fleet. And that has been the case, especially in the Baltic Sea for quite a long time,” Frederiksen told reporters. “And we are working very closely together to battle this situation.”
According to Western security officials, Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” refers to a vast network of hundreds of aging oil tankers and cargo ships that operate under obscure ownership structures, constantly shifting names and flags to evade sanctions and Western monitoring.
Officially, they are intended to transport Russian crude and other goods worldwide. However, Western intelligence services have long accused some of these vessels of being repurposed for covert activities, including the smuggling of sanctioned oil, to serve as staging points for electronic surveillance and, potentially, drone launches.
The fleet has been linked to several high-profile incidents in recent years, including suspected sabotage near undersea cables in the Baltic Sea and unexplained drone overflights of industrial infrastructure along the North Sea coast.
Following a series of mysterious drone sightings in August 2024 over nuclear power stations, liquefied natural gas terminals, and chemical plants near Brunsbüttel, Germany, defense officials provided some of the most detailed accounts yet of how Russia’s shadow fleet is believed to be waging what has been termed “hybrid warfare.”
Speaking on background, German law enforcement sources said Moscow had been deploying Orlan-10 drones from suspected shadow-fleet vessels stationed in the North Sea, just dozens of miles off Germany’s coast.
The Orlan-10 is a low-cost, fixed-wing UAV that Russia has relied on extensively for reconnaissance and intelligence gathering, making it a strong candidate for the mystery drones spotted over Europe.
According to the U.S. military’s Operational Environment Data Integration Network (ODIN), the aircraft can travel more than 370 miles at speeds just under 100 mph and typically operates between 3,000 and 5,000 feet—well within the altitudes NATO officials have reported.
It can also fly autonomously along pre-programmed waypoints for up to 16 hours, a profile that mirrors the prolonged flight times documented in recent incursions.
Reports have also indicated that the vessel Boracay had been previously operated under the name Kiwala, a flagless tanker pretending to be registered in Djibouti.
The Kiwala, previously sanctioned by the EU and the UK, was seized by the Estonian Navy in early April 2025 and later released that month.
This is not the first time ships from Russia’s so-called shadow fleet have been detained on suspicion of covert drone operations.
In May, two Russian-crewed cargo vessels—the HAV Dolphin and the Lauga—were stopped after drones were spotted near German and Dutch military sites.
Then, in early September, German special police reportedly seized another Russian freighter, the Scanlark, on suspicion of launching spy drones over a German Navy vessel.
However, in each case, authorities failed to uncover conclusive evidence directly linking the ships to the mysterious drone activity.
For its part, Russia has repeatedly denied any involvement in the waves of mystery drone incidents that have plagued NATO for years. It has so far offered no direct response to the seizure of the Boracay.
On Thursday morning, the public prosecutor in Brest announced that the detention of the Boracay’s crew had been extended, but declined to comment on suspicions that the vessel served as a launch platform for drone incursions into NATO airspace.
Local media, citing military sources, also reported that French forces remain on board the tanker. However, no explanation has been given for their continued presence.
As of Thursday morning, VesselFinder showed the Boracay remains anchored roughly 18 nautical miles off Saint-Nazaire on the French coast.

Amazon halts drone deliveries in Arizona after a pair crashed into a crane
Oct 2, 2025, 7:57 AM PDT
Amazon has paused drone deliveries in the West Valley Phoenix Metro Area after a pair of its MK30 drones crashed into a crane.
The crash happened on Wednesday morning at around 10AM local time in Tolleson, Arizona, approximately two miles from an Amazon distribution center where the drones launch and land.
There were no injuries reported, but according to a report by ABC15 Arizona news in Phoenix, one man was treated for smoke inhalation from the wreckage.
Gabriel Dahlberg, a diesel mechanic who witnessed one of the crashes from a nearby lot while parking a truck, told KPNX’s 12 News that the drone clipped the cable of the crane that was being used to lift equipment onto a building.
According to Sergeant Erik Mendez of the Tolleson Police Department, the preliminary investigation showed that the two Amazon drones were flying back to back when both crashed into the crane and landed approximately 100 to 200 feet apart in separate parking lots.
Local fire and police departments responded to the incident, but the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says it will investigate the incident with Amazon’s cooperation.
“We’re aware of an incident involving two Prime Air drones in Tolleson, Arizona. We’re currently working with the relevant authorities to investigate,” Amazon spokesperson Terrence Clark told The Verge in an emailed statement.
Amazon began same-day drone deliveries in Tolleson last November using its MK30 drones that can carry payloads up to five pounds.
It’s not known how long the service will be paused, but it’s the second time the drones have been grounded in the area since beginning operations less than a year ago.
Last January drone deliveries were paused so Amazon could complete software updates and FAA validations following a drone crash at a testing facility in Oregon.

DHS Closes Chicago Airspace to Drones Amid Immigration Raids
October 2, 2025
The Department of Homeland Security has closed Chicago’s airspace to drones until October 12th as federal agents use military-style tactics including drones and helicopters in a controversial immigration crackdown.
The FAA Temporary Flight Restriction effectively grounds all civilian drone operations across the city while government drones conduct surveillance in the Trump administration’s operation that has arrested over 800 people since early September.
The airspace closure marks an unprecedented restriction on drone pilots in America’s third-largest city, raising questions about the balance between security operations and civil liberties in the National Airspace System.
FAA Issues Temporary Flight Restriction Through October 12
The FAA issued a Temporary Flight Restriction over Chicago at the request of DHS, prohibiting all civilian drone flights in the area effective immediately through October 12, 2025.
The restriction applies to recreational and commercial drone operators alike, grounding drone businesses and hobbyists while federal agencies conduct immigration enforcement operations using their own drone technology.
Drone industry experts quickly questioned the restriction on social media, with one noting “There’s zero legitimate security reason for this TFR.” The closure prevents local drone operators from working while federal drones fly overhead conducting surveillance.
The restriction coincides with Operation Midway Blitz, the Trump administration’s Chicago-area immigration crackdown that began in early September.
Federal Drones and Helicopters Used in South Side Raid
Early Tuesday morning, federal agents conducted a middle-of-the-night raid on a South Side Chicago apartment building using drones, helicopters, trucks, and dozens of vehicles.
Nearly 300 federal agents from various agencies participated in the operation, which targeted an apartment complex allegedly frequented by members of the Tren de Aragua gang.
“It felt like we were under siege,” said Darrell Ballard, 63, a bystander who captured videos of officers entering the building in darkness.
A U.S. Border Patrol official confirmed that snipers rappelled from helicopters onto the apartment complex roof as a precaution against potential violence.
Federal authorities arrested at least 37 people without legal immigration status in that raid alone. The Department of Homeland Security announced that 100 National Guard troops will deploy to Illinois in coming days to protect federal facilities.
Political Backlash and Civil Liberties Concerns
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker condemned the operation, calling federal officers “jackbooted thugs roaming around a peaceful downtown” and demanding they leave Chicago.
Mayor Brandon Johnson rejected any attempt to militarize American cities, stating “Chicagoans are not test subjects for the president to train our military.”
President Trump revealed plans Tuesday to use Chicago and other cities as “training grounds” for future wars, telling military leaders “We’re going to straighten them out one by one.”
Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for public affairs for DHS, defended the operations saying “The Trump administration will not allow violent criminals or repeat offenders to terrorize our neighborhoods or victimize our children and innocent Americans.”
1/2
However, the National Immigrant Justice Center and ACLU of Illinois filed legal challenges last week contesting 35 arrests, including three U.S. citizens, arguing the operations violated consent decrees limiting warrantless ICE arrests.
Hundreds of demonstrators protested the increased ICE activity Tuesday evening, marching down Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago.
Impact on Chicago’s Drone Community
The airspace closure affects Chicago’s substantial commercial drone industry, including real estate photographers, construction inspectors, and infrastructure surveyors who rely on drones for daily operations.
Part 107 commercial pilots cannot work in the restricted airspace, while recreational pilots face the same grounding through mid-October.
The restriction represents one of the most expansive non-emergency TFRs affecting civilian drone operations in a major U.S. city, comparable to airspace closures during major events like the Super Bowl but lasting significantly longer.
DroneXL’s Take
The Chicago airspace closure reveals a troubling new pattern: civilian drone pilots grounded while federal drones conduct surveillance overhead.
This isn’t about protecting federal operations from hobby drones interfering—Part 107 pilots are professionals who check TFRs religiously and would never fly near active law enforcement operations.
This is about monopolizing airspace for government surveillance while preventing any civilian documentation of federal activities.
The combination of aerial drones for surveillance with helicopter-deployed tactical teams shows how drone technology is becoming integrated into large-scale federal operations.
But blanket airspace closures that ground legitimate businesses and hobbyists while federal drones operate freely deserve scrutiny, especially when critics question whether security justifications hold up.
We’ve covered how drones benefit law enforcement for search and rescue, disaster response, and officer safety.
But when federal agencies use drone technology in operations that courts may ultimately rule unconstitutional—while simultaneously preventing civilians from flying their own drones in the same airspace—we need to ask hard questions about whose interests these restrictions really serve.
The legal challenges citing constitutional violations suggest courts will need to clarify boundaries for both drone use and airspace restrictions in domestic operations.
Chicago’s drone community, meanwhile, waits for October 12th to reclaim their piece of the sky.

Swimming drone explores underwater mountain in Lake Superior
October 1, 2025
Known to some as the “Freshwater Everest,” if you want to explore this mountain, you don’t go up, you go down.
In the middle of Lake Superior, near the boundary between Canadian and US waters, sits the Superior Shoal, a mountain that’s completely underwater.
The shoal is about 4 square miles of volcanic rock that rises up from the bottom of the lake to a height nearly three times that of the Statue of Liberty. Its peak wrests about 30 feet below the surface.
The shoal, a term used to describe areas of shallow water, was first charted in 1929. Now, filmmakers and researchers are exploring it with underwater drones.
They want to see if it’s a hotbed for aquatic life that could offer a refuge for species facing obstacles elsewhere in the Great Lakes.
“This is an area that has very, very rarely been explored on camera,” said Zach Melnick, a cofounder of Inspired Planet Productions, which he runs with his business partner and wife, Yvonne Drebert.
It’s not the only underwater incline in the Great Lakes.
Others include Stannard Rock, a reef in Lake Superior north of Marquette; a knoll outside Tobermory, Ontario in Lake Huron; and Midlake Reef in Lake Michigan, between Muskegon and Milwaukee.
And it’s not the only “Superior Shoal.” There’s another located in the St. Lawrence River off the shore of New York.
But Drebert and Melnick believe the Superior Shoal in Lake Michigan is the largest known underwater mountain in fresh water.
Documenting aquatic life with a swimming robot
The filmmakers had been curious about lake protrusions after exploring one that appeared to be an outlier of aquatic life while filming their series and related documentary, “All Too Clear: Beneath the Surface of the Great Lakes.”
Those works dive deep into how invasive mussels in the Great Lakes are gobbling up essential nutrients and devastating organisms, from plankton to whitefish.
When a researcher they’d worked with in the past, Michael Rennie, got a grant to explore the Superior Shoal, they “sort of begged him,” Melnick said, to let them come along.
1/2
Rennie is an associate professor at Lakehead University and a research fellow at the International Institute for Sustainable Development-Experimental Lakes Area.
Now, with the help of the filmmakers’ cameras, he’s looking into whether the Superior Shoal might be a hotspot for life, which he said is often the case for similar seamounts found in the ocean.
What they’re essentially studying, Rennie said, is “how the physics of having this giant mountain in a bunch of water that’s swirling around all the time interacts with things like nutrients, and with the growth of algae, to promote the abundance of fish that we seem to be seeing out there.”
Melnick and Drebert are operating special cinema-grade cameras to monitor aquatic life like zooplankton, algae and fish. The drone they use is called a Boxfish Luna and it can go around 1,600 feet deep, about the length of five football fields.
“Think of aerial drones, take all that cool technology, and put it in a robot that you’re shoving underwater,” Drebert said. “But our drone is a little bit special because it can swim in any direction, just like a fish.”
Usually, it takes a little while for fish to get used to the swimming drone, Melnick said, but fish near the Superior Shoal seemed to be curious.
“The trout out there were ultra amenable to being on camera,” he said.
At one point, while the team was livestreaming video, they tried to measure fish with two laser points. The fish chased the glowing red dots the same way cats do.
They also saw hydra, which are kind of like freshwater anemones, attached to rocks, giving the effect of a garden.
“They are little tiny aquatic animals that wave in the wind,” said Drebert. “They use their little hairy tentacles to pull food, like little zooplankton and critters, out of the water.”
Ripe for conservation?
Rennie said the data collected on the recent trip has not been fully analyzed yet.
But, if research shows that the Superior Shoal is a magnet for aquatic life, then maybe it and places like it could serve as refuges for near-shore populations dealing with environmental or human-caused problems.
“And, if that’s the case, then I think we’ve got really good arguments to be made for maybe we should think about affording these regions a higher conservation status,” Rennie said.
Melnick and Drebert are planning to use footage taken from the Superior Shoal in a documentary they’re developing about lakemounts as well as a wildlife docuseries they’re working on.
If you want to hear more about the filmmakers’ work, they’ll be speaking with other panelists at a free screening of their last documentary, “All Too Clear,” happening 7 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Detroit Film Theatre at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Bridge Michigan environment reporter Kelly House will moderate the panel. The underwater drone will also be on display.

Suspicious Drones Spotted Over Thyssenkrupp Sub-Building Shipyard in Kiel
Oct 1, 2025 10:15 PM
The mysterious and provocative drone overflights around Denmark last week were not isolated incidents, new reporting from Germany suggests.
Similar drone formations were spotted in and around Kiel last Friday, including parts of the port city's maritime infrastructure, according to Der Spiegel.
The incident in Kiel occurred on September 26, four days after a small flock of airborne drones forced the closure of Copenhagen's airport.
According to Der Spiegel's sources, the drones surveilled the waterfront, the bay, and the facilities in the harbor, including the Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems submarine plant.
Security sources reported a larger "mother drone" accompanied by smaller drones, working in a coordinated fashion over Kiel's maritime critical infrastructure.
Elsewhere in the state, drones were spotted as far inland as the Heide refinery plant in Hemmingstedt, 40 miles southwest of Kiel along the canal.
"It is clear that the drone overflights in various EU countries, Germany, and here in Schleswig-Holstein in recent weeks and months are primarily intended to create uncertainty and destabilize," regional Minister-President Daniel Gunther told Der Spiegel on Wednesday.
"We also need effective and functioning drone defense in Germany as soon as possible to protect our critical infrastructure and the population."
Danish authorities suspect that the earlier Copenhagen raid may have been launched from the main deck of one or more Russia-linked merchant ships, including the shadow fleet tanker Pushpa, which was boarded and searched by French authorities on Wednesday.
Likewise, the Kiel drone operation on Friday may also have been launched from a vessel in the Baltic, according to Der Spiegel.
On Wednesday, EU leaders gathered in Copenhagen to discuss options for aiding Ukraine and responding to Russian "hybrid warfare" activity, both along the eastern flank and deep in Europe's interior.
Most leaders have been circumspect about the source of the drone incidents, but after the meeting, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen addressed the matter of attribution directly.
"We meet at a time when Russia have intensified their attacks in Ukraine, where we have seen Russian airspace violations and unwanted drone activity in several European countries," she told reporters. "They are threatening us and they are testing us and they will not stop."

Ocean paddler Michael Walther hit by an UFO
2 October 2025
It happened last night when the ocean board of Michael Walther, who is currently paddling across the Atlantic, was struck by an unknown object.
The 46-year-old athlete had been traveling on his six-meter-long offshore SUP for 13 days when his boat collided with a so-called UFO.
At the time of the collision on his route from Lagos (Portugal) to French Guiana, he was just off the coast of the Canary Island of Fuerteventura.
Walther had already covered around 1,000 kilometers of the planned 6,000-kilometer route.
Michael Walther had just gone to sleep in his small cabin on the board when there was a loud bang.
The paddler flew through the bunk, the board lay on its side. After the watercraft had stabilized again, Walther crawled out of the cabin and inspected the damage.
The position light and the AIS antenna for automatic position transmission had broken off and gone overboard. The cabin of the board has a large hole in the ceiling.
Has the board suffered structural damage?
The athlete and environmental activist under the name Zero Emissions is doing well under the circumstances:
“I have to go to the next port now and see what exactly happened.” Fortunately, it was not far away: on the morning of October 2 (Thursday), Walther sailed into the port of Puerto del Rosario on Fuerteventura.
They are now checking whether the board has also suffered structural or safety-related damage. Michael Wather has set himself three goals for his tour across the Atlantic:
To master the sporting challenge, to collect acoustic ocean data for the Alfred Wegener Institute using a hydrophone – and to remind us that you can achieve a lot with small paddle strokes.

A pyramid-shaped UFO was spotted over Texas
October 2, 2025
Residents of Trenton, Texas, filmed an unidentified flying object in the shape of a pyramid, which remained in view for about two minutes, according to the Daily Mail.
“There was no sound. It was a large black craft with white lights around the edges,” said an eyewitness.
According to him, the object was flying at a speed of 32-48 miles per hour and was about 30 feet above the ground.
The man sent the photos to the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC).
According to the publication, a similar object has been spotted about 20 times in the US in the last year alone. So far, the authorities have not commented on the incident.
Former US National Security Service employee Matthew Brown said that secret reports mention military contact with this UFO. However, he did not disclose any details.
Earlier it was reported that the US National Archives published a 1947 video entitled “The Roswell Incident,” which allegedly shows UFOs and aliens.

Multiple UFOs Filmed Zipping Around Mexican Volcano
October 01, 2025
A webcam watching over a volcano in Mexico filmed multiple UFOs zipping through the night sky over the site that some believe to be a secret alien base.
According to a local media report, the peculiar scene unfolded over the course of a half hour on Monday evening at the famed Popocatépetl volcano.
A social media account that chronicles curious webcam footage from the country shared a time-lapse video (seen above) of the strange flurry of activity and expressed amazement at the "many lights in the sky" that were crisscrossing the sky at what seemed to be a tremendous speed.
The location of the unusual flap undoubtedly caught the attention of UFO enthusiasts in Mexico, as Monday night's activity was not the first time something odd had been spotted in the sky over Popocatépetl.
Previous webcam videos from the location have shown all manner of aerial anomalies at the site, including some that appeared to enter or exit the volcano.
The frequency of these events is such that it has long been theorized that Popocatépetl could be a clandestine base belonging to otherworldly visitors.
With that in mind, many pointed to the latest footage from the volcano as further indication that such fantastic speculation has merit. Should that be the case, one cannot help but wonder what might have prompted so many craft taking to the skies on Monday evening.
That said, more skeptical observers argue that the UFOs are merely prosaic aircraft that seem to be extraordinary due to the time-lapse nature of the video, which condensed thirty minutes into a tidy thirty seconds.
What do you make of the scene that unfolded over Popocatépetl earlier this week? Weigh in with your thoughts at the C2C Facebook page.

House is “where the issues are” with UAPDA, Schumer's co-sponsor says
Oct 01, 2025
Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) — Sponsor, UAPDA (UAP Disclosure Act)
Ask a Pol asks:
Has your UAP Disclosure Act with [Senate Minority Leader Chuck] Schumer come up in NDAA — National Defense Authorization Act — talks?
Key Rounds:
“I don’t know that it’s going to get through the House,” Sen. Mike Rounds tells Ask a Pol UAP. “I think that’s where the issues are.”
We heard maybe [SASC — Senate Armed Services Committee — Chair] Roger Wicker had problems with it over here in the Senate?
“I hadn’t heard that,” Rounds says. “The only thing I know is that I heard that the House may not be willing to go along with it.”
Fate of NDAA during shutdown?
Is the NDAA even moving or is that just kind of a placeholder on the floor during the government shutdown?
“It’s all ready to go,” Rounds says. “I think, our Democrat colleagues have one or two issues they had to resolve on their own, and then once that’s been resolved, then we can move right to the — we can get ‘er done.”
Optic-wise, can Congress tackle the NDAA while the government’s shut down?
“Yeah,” Rounds says.
That’s fine. Yeah?
“Yeah,” Rounds tells Ask a Pol. “And we can do Approps (ie, spending) as well.”
Caught our ear:
“There’s a significant number that we don’t have any differences of opinion on,” Rounds tells us.

Matthew Brown – holding past presidents accountable for UAP secrecy
1 October 2025
As whistleblowers for overhead flying objects (of the alien variety) often get the cold shoulder from the feds, one might wonder if the situation has always been that way.
Former Pentagon metadata analyst Matthew Brown has gained a lot of traction this year with his outpourings, lamenting heavy bureaucracy and being silenced after congressional hearings.
Brown's deep dive into the Pentagon's tight-lipped UFO program and publication of the “Immaculate Constellation” file earned him a juggernaut of support from the subterranean community, particularly on Reddit.
Throughout August and September this year, Brown took to the written form with his Invisible Frontiers substack blog. The blog examines the greed and ignorance apparent at the constitutional level, apportioning blame to past presidents, albeit underhandedly.
A history of concealment
Brown points to a murky past regarding secrecy that dates back to President Truman, just after World War II.
He claims that successive presidents, from Truman through Reagan, Obama, and Trump, chose to continue the secrecy frameworks they inherited.
UFO disclosure from a president would alienate voters, so leaders across the spectrum applied willful ignorance.
Accordingly, by going it alone – or at least with support from prominent ufologists like Jeremy Corbell – Brown was able to win over the crowd in his own right.
“Every step of the process was anomalous and not in keeping with official procedures. This was partly by design – my decision to self-report offered an opportunity to learn more about UAP through ‘the process’ itself.”
Secrets, silence, and disclosure
Another thing that has often perplexed the UAP community is how disclosure revolves around the United States, when surely aliens don’t recognize borders.
UAP were clearly real, definitely global, ambiguous in intent, and seemingly indifferent to earthly laws and borders.
It made perfect sense for the Department of Defense and the US intelligence community to maintain secret programs devoted to such a threat.
wrote Matthew Brown.
Many conspiracy analysts in the past claimed that President Truman was responsible for burying/embellishing the 1947 Roswell incident in New Mexico by forming a cover-up committee.
NYmag even goes as far as saying that Kennedy’s assassination may even be down to him threatening to reveal the MJ12 (Truman's committee) negotiations.
While presidents might stay silent, while in office, there are occasions where a slice of consideration is served.
1/2
In 2021, Barack Obama, on The Late Late Show with James Corden, claimed:
“What is true, and I’m actually being serious here, is that there are, there’s footage and records of objects in the skies, that we don’t know exactly what they are," explained Obama.
“And so, you know, I think that people still take it seriously trying to investigate and figure out what that is.”
This kind of hindsight suggests Obama's lips were sealed at the time, and of course, Brown doesn’t hold Obama accountable directly. But this does suggest the legacy of silence continues.
False hope with the Trump administration
A vocal beginning to Trump's second term brought a misleading sense of hope, as his inauguration seemed to suggest any issue could be on the table.
“With the return of the Trump administration, pieces of the UAP puzzle once again seemed to be moving toward disclosure,” said Brown.
But as appears to be the case, Trump wouldn’t be able to sign off on any progressive legislation due to the relics of a bygone era.
“On the policy side, multiple independent sources told me of a set of classified executive orders and agreements (sometimes described as ‘treaties’) signed by previous presidents without Congress’s knowledge or approval.”
And the more the UAP community sounded off, the more of a threat they became in exposing the cracks in Congress – Brown was sidelined, and remained as powerless as the president himself:
“These illegal arrangements function as clandestine laws which abrogate the Constitution and negate the will of the people.”
Reddit reaction
The community reaction was mixed, with one Redditor aghast at Brown's tone of voice.
“It seems that Matthew Brown is speaking to ideology rather than evidence. And that's a warning sign,” said @computer_d.
Another commenter, however, encouraged the push against presidential silence:
We can’t give these passes to either side anymore, we need to keep the pressure. Trump and Tulsi could make a massive difference here, but they’re silent. Actions speak louder than words.
The r/UFO's Reddit community
In his Substack, Brown also revealed that he had permission to (at a time yet undecided), to speak about his Immaculate constellation report.
He culminated his effort by calling for an inquisition into the constitutional rot that is America’s secrecy state.
“The challenge before us is formidable. Corruption is pervasive, toxic, and entrenched at the top.”
