US congresswoman responds to Putin’s remarks

The Russian president named fixing ties with the US as among the country’s national interests

There’s “no reason” for the US and Russia not being “great trade partners,” US Representative Anna Paulina Luna has said.

The Florida Republican responded to the remarks made by Russian President Vladimir Putin during his Valdai forum speech on Thursday.

During his nearly four-hour appearance at the event, the Russian leader said thatthe “restoration of full-fledged relations with the US” corresponded with the country’s “national interests.

Luna, who serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, reposted the respective excerpt from Putin’s speech on her official X account, agreeing with the Russian leader that Moscow and Washington should indeed mend their ties.

“This needs to happen. There is no reason why we can’t be great trade partners with Russia,” the congresswoman wrote.

In his Valdai speech,Putin repeatedly signaled readiness to fix ties with Washington should the US be willing to show reciprocityand respect Russia’s national interests.

“We see that the current US administration is guided by, first of all, the interests of its own country, the way it sees them. I believe this is a rational approach. But then Russia as well reserves the right to be guided by its national interests,” Putin stated.

The Russian president also spoke about the relationship with his US counterpart, Donald Trump.Despite his image and his tendency to “shock” the public, Trump has proven to be a “comfortable” interlocutor who is actually able to “listen and hear,” Putin revealed.

‘Even Zelensky’ must show Hungary respect – Szijjarto

Ukraine relies heavily on EU aid, which requires the approval of all member states, the foreign minister has said

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has warned Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky to treat his country with respect, noting that as an EU member, Budapest can veto much of the aid sent to Kiev. This comes after Zelensky demanded that Hungary stop purchasing Russian oil.

Relations between Budapest and Kiev have grown increasingly strained since 2022. Unlike many EU nations, Hungary has refused to supply weapons to Ukraine, and has opposed the bloc’s sanctions on Russia. Budapest has also objected to the prospect of Kiev joining the EU and NATO.

In a post on X on Thursday, Szijjarto wrote thatBudapest expects “even Zelensky to speak about Hungary and Hungarians with respect, especially given that Ukraine depends heavily on support from the European Union, where no decisions are made without Hungary– whether he likes it or not.”

The thinly veiled threat came in response to an X post by Zelensky earlier in the day, which expressed support for US President Donald “Trump’s call to stop buying Russian oil here in Europe.”

“It’s short-sighted to go against the USA – and guys from Hungary need to hear this clearly,” Zelensky wrote. (I hate this psychopath!)

In a post on his Truth Social platform in mid-September, Trump said he is “ready to do major Sanctions on Russia… when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA.”

While the EU has pledged to completely phase out Russian fossil fuel imports by 2027, some members, most notably Hungary and Slovakia, have pushed back against the plan, citing the fact that their infrastructure is built around supplies of Russian energy.

In late September, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban saidhe told Trump that “if Hungary is cut off from Russian oil and natural gas… the Hungarian economy would be on its knees.”

In August, Ukraine launched a series of drone strikes on the Druzhba pipeline, which carries Russian oil to Hungary. Orban accused Kiev of attempting to undermine his country’s energy security in retaliation for refusing to back Ukraine’s EU membership bid.

UK energy chief claims Musk fueling ‘threat’ to Britain

Labour heavyweight Ed Miliband has told the billionaire to “get the hell out of our politics”

UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has accused Elon Musk of posing a major threat to Britain, claiming the billionaire backs nationalist forces seeking to undermine the country.

Speaking at the Labour Party conference on Wednesday, the former party leader linked Musk to Nigel Farage, whose Reform UK party gained traction in the May local elections. The US-based entrepreneur has expressed support for the party, but has urged Farage to step down.

According to Miliband, Farage is “a key part of a global network that wants to destroy the ties that bind our communities and our way of life.” He added: “I can sum up the threat for you in two words: Elon Musk.”

Miliband alleged thatMusk “incites violence on our streets,” “calls for the overthrow of our elected government,” and enables “disinformation through X” – the microblogging platform that the billionaire purchased in 2022.

We have a message for Elon Musk. Get the hell out of our politics and our country.

Musk appeared unfazed by the remarks. Shortly after the speech, he blasted Prime Minister Keir Starmer, calling him “an actor with an empty head” who merely repeats talking points supplied by others.

Musk and Starmer have engaged in a months-long feud over the UK’s grooming gang scandal. In June, Starmer authorized a new national inquiry into the mass sexual exploitation of British girls, crimes largely linked to gangs of Pakistani men over a decade ago. Musk accused the prime minister of being “deeply complicit in the mass rapes in exchange for votes.”

Cori Bush launches comeback bid for Missouri seat

She was one of two progressive Dems to lose in primaries against candidates backed by AIPAC last summer.

Gregory Svirnovskiy

10/03/2025, 9:55am ET

Former Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) is making a play for her old St. Louis seat in Congress, she announced Friday on X, a yearafter losing a primary in part due to her opposition to Israel.

“I ran for Congress to change things for regular people,” she said in a video announcement. “I’m running again because St. Louis deserves leadership that doesn’t wait for permission, doesn’t answer to wealthy donors(lie) and doesn’t hide when things get tough.”

The former Squad member spent two terms in Congress before being unseated in a messy Democratic primary by Rep. Wesley Bell (D-Mo.), whose campaign was bankrolled by millions from pro-Israel groups, including $8 million from AIPAC.

She was one of two progressive Democrats to lose in primaries against candidates backed by AIPAC last summer. Former Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) was bested last year by Democrat George Latimer.

While in Congress, Bush led a sit-in at the steps of the Capitol that pressured the Biden administration to continue a pandemic-era eviction moratorium. And she became an outspoken critic of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, calling for a ceasefire and describing Israel as an “apartheid state.”

Bush told POLITICO last December that it was “Republican money” that unseated her in St. Louis. She acknowledged AIPAC’s role in her defeat last August, telling the lobbying group “I’m coming to tear your kingdom down” in a speech following Bell’s victory.

But Bush cast a forward-looking view in her campaign announcement.

“All across America we see it, our rights rolled back, our history being rewritten, our lives on the line,” she said. “The stakes for our community here have never been higher. I’m running because our district deserves someone ten toes down, for our families, for our wallets, for our safety, for our Democracy and for our bright future.”

In a post on X Friday, Bell slammed Bush for her ‘no’ vote on Democrats’ 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law and highlighted a Justice Department investigation into her campaign spending.

“St. Louis deserves real results and honest representation, not more headlines or scandals,” he wrote. “When it came time to deliver, Cori Bush’s focus wasn’t on our community, but on her own national agenda. That’s why our district was left behind.”

Trump making plans to send billions in cash bailouts to farmers with taxpayer money

The president has also said he wants to use direct tariff revenue for the payments, but that could trigger a major fight in Congress.

President Donald Trump. | Francis Chung/POLITICO

By Meredith Lee Hill10/02/2025 03:00 PM EDT

The Trump administration is planning to roll out the first tranche of bailout payments for farmers in the coming weeks, likely using billions of dollars in funding from an internal USDA account, according to three people with direct knowledge of the matter.

But it won’t be enough:USDA’s Commodity Credit Corporation fund— which President Donald Trump previously tapped to provide $28 billion in farm aid during his first-term trade war with China —has just $4 billion left in the account. Trump officials, including those at the Treasury Department, are looking at how to tap tariff receipts or other funding to supplement the payments without triggering a messy fight in Congress.

The timing of the actual aid rollout is also tricky given that it’s unlikely to happen or even be possible during the ongoing government shutdown that’s shuttered vast swaths of the Agriculture Department.

Trump officials are still working on estimates of how big the first tranche of aid will be, according to the three people, who were granted anonymity to share private details. But the president has been posting his promises to aid American soybean farmers on social media in recent days.

Hill Republicans have been pushing Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and other Trump officials for weeks to do something to aid farmers reeling from high input costs and the president’s tariffs, which have cut off American soybean farmers’ key markets in China as Beijing retaliates.

Trump has said he would use tariff revenue to provide cash bailouts to farmers, but Congress would likely need to vote to authorize such a move, triggering a major fight between Republicans and Democrats amid already dire government spending conversations.

GOP lawmakers could also move to refill the internal USDA fund in their government funding fight later this fall, but that too will be a battle with Democrats.

Hill Republicans have been quietly working on their own proposal to find additional funding for the farm bailouts, according to four other people with direct knowledge of the matter. Some Republicans estimate they will eventually need to provide $35 billion to $50 billion in aid to farmers hit by Trump’s tariffs.

Dutch cabinet presses ahead with refugee “priority” housing plan

October 3, 2025

The caretaker cabinet said on Friday it is pressing ahead with legislation thatwould remove the “priority” some refugees are given when it comes to social housing, even though the idea was slammed by the government’s most senior advisory body.

The Council of State said last month that the draft legislation would lead to unequal treatment before the law and therefore conflict with the constitution. The bill, the council said, should not proceed in its present form.

Refugees with residence permits already have “a disadvantageous starting position on the housing market,”the Council of State said. But housing minister Mona Keijzer’s plan, it said, would prevent local authorities from compensating for that disadvantage.

Despite the criticism, ministers have agreed to press ahead, saying it ensures everyonehas an equal chance on the housing market. “And that includes refugees who need housing urgently, because they are ill or getting divorced,” the cabinet said.

Housing minister Mona Keijzer told reporters after the cabinet meetingthat the priority rule is unfair considering some people have to wait 10 years for a home–. “Refugees are offered a home 14 weeks after they are given a residency permit==,” she said. “This is impossible to explain to people who have been waiting so long.”

In practice, very few refugees are given a home so quickly. Around 18,000 people are currently living in formal refugee accommodation who should already have moved to regular housing but cannot do so because of the shortage of homes.

“Buying or renting a home not covered by rent controls is also an option,” the cabinet statement said, “as well as sharing a home, renting a room or moving in with family and friends.”

Contrary to claims by far-right groups, refugees do not automatically have priority over Dutch nationals. If they are offered a home, they must accept it even if it does not fully meet their needs. If they refuse, they can be evicted from the refugee accommodation where they are living.

Keijzer’s proposal differs from an amendment tabled by far-right PVV MP Jeremy Mooiman, which was unexpectedly adopted in early July when several left-wing MPs were absent.

That plan would bar councils from granting urgent housing status to anyone without Dutch nationality, including asylum permit holders, students, labour migrants and foreign spouses of Dutch citizens. Keijzer said in August that the measure was unconstitutional.

Given that parliament is now in recess ahead of the general election, the bill will be debated and voted on by the new intake of MPs.
