Astronauts work through the U.S. government shutdown | On the International Space Station

Sept. 29-Oct. 3, 2025

The Expedition 73 crew continued their science research and maintenance work aboard the International Space Station this week, despite the start of a U.S. government shutdown back on Earth.

Orbital observation

Hello from space!

"Today was a busy day as well, but I was able to take some photos in between workouts," wrote Kimiya Yui on social media on Thursday (Oct. 2).

"About 25 minutes after taking photos near the Mediterranean, we passed over Japan's Honshu. Those who saw the ISS yesterday evening and waved to it, ended up waving to me while I was doing strength training looking out the window."

Science status

Among the research that was conducted by the Expedition 73 crew aboard the space station this week was:

SHRIMP — NASA astronaut Jonny Kim activated the State-of-the-art Humidity Removal in Microgravity Payload, a device designed to extract moisture from a spacecraft's atmosphere for reuse.

Heat Transfer Host 2 — Mike Fincke, also with NASA, installed the new experiment to study condensation when gas turns to liquid, potentially adding to the development of thermal systems for crewed spacecraft sent on deep-space missions.

ADvanced Space Experiment Processor-4 — NASA flight engineer Zena Cardman installed new sample cassettes for a study supporting the manufacturing of medicines (drugs or pharmaceuticals) in microgravity.

Station keeping

The Expedition 73 crewmates also took part in activities to maintain the space station's systems and prepare for future research.

Fluid Science Laboratory — Mike Fincke and Jonny Kim spent time configuring this European Space Agency (ESA) apparatus for researching the physics of fluid in microgravity. They changed out electrical cables, brought together components and mounted foam coarsening samples.

Capture Bag Demo — Fincke also installed the TransAstra Fly Trap Capture Bag Demo into the NanoRacks Bishop airlock, ahead of tests to show its capability to remain open, close and stay airtight in the weightless environment of space. The bag may be a method of capturing and disposing of space debris.

Electrostatic Levitation Furnace — JAXA astronaut Kimiya Yui changed out specimen handling hardware and configured cables for this device, which uses lasers to heat materials to ultra-high temperatures while data is collected about the thermo-physical properties of the samples.

By the numbers

As of Friday (Oct. 3), there are 7 people aboard the International Space Station: Expedition 73 commander Sergey Ryzhikov of Roscosmos; fellow cosmonauts Alexey Zubritsky and Oleg Platonov; Jonny Kim, Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke of NASA; and Kimiya Yui of JAXA, all flight engineers.

There are two docked crew spacecraft: SpaceX's Dragon "Endeavour" attached to the zenith port of the Harmony module and Roscosmos' Soyuz MS-27 attached to the Earth-facing port of the Prichal node.

There are four docked cargo spacecraft: Roscosmos' Progress MS-31 (92P) docked to the space-facing port of the Poisk module and Progress M-32 (93P) docked to the aft port of the Zvezda service module, SpaceX's CRS-33 Dragon spacecraft docked to the forward port of Harmony Node 2 and Northrop Grumman's NG-23 Cygnus XL, the "SS William C. 'Willie' McCool," berthed to the Unity node.

As of Friday, the space station has been continuously crewed for 24 years, 11 months and 1 day.

Astrophotographers capture dazzling new views of Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) as it brightens for October skies

October 3, 2025

Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) is just weeks away from a close approach to Earth that could make it visible to the naked eye in the October night sky.

Read on for spectacular views of this wandering comet and its magnificent tail as captured by astrophotographers around the world.

Astronomers discovered Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) on Jan. 3 using a 60-inch telescope located at the Mt.Lemmon Observatory in Arizona.

The comet is currently heading farther into the solar system and will make its closest approach to Earth on Oct. 21, passing a little over 55 million miles (89 million kilometers) from our planet, before heading on to perihelion — its closest point to the sun — on Nov. 8.

Since its discovery, the comet has brightened significantly, jumping from magnitude +21.5 in January to +7 and beyond, raising hopes that it could become visible to the naked eye from dark sky locations in the coming month if the trend continues.

Remember, magnitude is the scale used by astronomers to chart the apparent brightness of an object in the night sky. The lower the number, the brighter the object. The human eye is able to see bodies with a magnitude of +6.5 under ideal dark sky conditions.

Comets are famously unpredictable. The recent brightening could be a transient outburst rather than a steady increase as the comet approaches to the sun, only time will tell.

Right now, the wandering solar system body is currently visible as a diffuse smudge of light through binoculars, while astrophotographers using specialized cameras attached to powerful backyard telescopes are already capturing breathtaking long-exposure views of the comet's bright nucleus and twisting ion tails.

Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) in pictures

Astronomer Aleix Roig captured this image of Comet Lemmon in the moonless skies above Catalonia, Spain, on Sept. 22, revealing the haunting glow of the central coma from which flows a spectral ion trail.

"In this image, you can clearly see the comet's greenish coma, a result of diatomic carbon (C2) fluorescing in sunlight and its developing tail extending away from the Sun," Roig wrote in a blog post on his astronomy website www.astrocat.info.

"These features make "Lemmon" a striking reminder of the icy wanderers that visit the inner solar system from the distant Oort Cloud."

Jānis Šatrovskis stitched together a stunning timelapse view revealing the extent to which C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) traveled relative to the starfield beyond just a few days later on Sept. 25 from Burtnieki, Latvia.

Even more detailed views came courtesy of astrophotographer Dan Bartlett, who imaged the comet over multiple nights to reveal how the complex structure of its ever-shifting tail evolved over time from his backyard in June Lake, California, over recent weeks.

Bartlett captured the comet's twisting ion tail wax and wane as it was buffeted by the solar wind emanating from our parent star.

Chris Schur produced a spectacular hour-long exposure of Comet Lemmon over Payson, Arizona, on Sept. 30.

"While Comet Lemmon was merely a soft diffuse glow in the binoculars, long exposure imaging revealed a stunning object with a lovely teal colored head turning into a pair of tails - one golden hued made of dust near the head, and a long blue streamer of gas traveling all the way across my 3 degree wide field with the 8inch astrograph," Schur told Space.com in an email.

X user Bray Falls captured yet another gorgeous view of C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) streaking through the skies above Austin, Texas, in early October as the tail showed subtle perturbations brought about by the solar wind.

Chuck's Astrophotography posted a similarly magnificent view on X, showing incredible detail in the tail as it sprawled out against a backdrop of distant stars on Oct. 2

Comet Lemmon is best viewed in the hours preceding dawn in early October and can currently be found between the constellations Ursa Major and Leo Minor.

Following perihelion on Nov. 8, Comet Lemmon will embark on a 1,351-year elliptical orbit that will see the icy body range out 243 times the Earth/sun distance before beginning its return journey to the inner solar system.

International Observe the Moon Night 2025: 4 things to see on the lunar surface on Oct. 4

October 4, 2025

International Observe the Moon Night 2025 is upon us! Here's what to look for when the lunar disk rises above the eastern horizon on Oct. 4.

Each year NASA teams up with a host of international partners to hold events to engage the public in observing the moon and learn about humanity's efforts to explore Earth's natural satellite.

Be sure to check out the Observe the Moon Night website to explore over 950 virtual and in-person events that are being held to mark the occasion!

To celebrate, we've put together a list of stunning targets to observe through a telescope, binoculars, or with the naked eye that showcase the diverse nature of the lunar surface.

1 - The terminator

The line separating night from day on the lunar surface is known as the terminator. On Oct. 4, this shadowy divide will fall over the extreme left side of the 95%-lit moon, just two days before it reaches its full moon phase on Oct. 6 and gives rise to a spectacular full "Harvest Supermoon".

Look to the top of the terminator to see the shadow-drenched form of the 75 mile-wide (120 kilometer) Pythagoras Crater scarring the lunar surface, while to the south the western rim of the sprawling Schickard Crater is thrown into relief below the striking oval form of the impact crater Byrgius.

2 - Mare Nubium

Look south of the moon's equator on Oct. 4 to find Mare Nubium (Latin for "the Sea of Clouds") darkening a vast swathe of the lunar surface, with the prominent Lubiniezky, Bullialdus and Wolf craters pockmarking this basalt plain.

The lunar seas were formed billions of years ago when lakes of lava flooded networks of impact basins excavated by brutal asteroid strikes.

The lava subsequently cooled and solidified to repave the lunar surface, leaving vast regions that appear relatively unscathed by the bombardment that ravaged the more ancient parts of the lunar surface.

3 - Mountains surrounding the "Bay of Rainbows"

Montes Jura is a vast mountainous range of terrain bordering the northern edge of the Sinus Iridum (Latin for "Bay of Rainbows") impact site.

The upper peaks are perfectly positioned to catch the sun's light around 11 days after the monthly new moon phase, making it appear as if a vast "Golden Handle" resides upon the lunar surface.

4 - Ejecta rays

The nights surrounding a full moon phase are the perfect time to spot ejecta rays brightening the lunar surface.

These bright streaks emanating from craters are formed when asteroid strikes cast out reflective material from the moon's interior and can extend for hundreds of kilometers.

Tonight, look for them streaking away from large impact sites such as Kepler, Copernicus and the 53-mile-wide (85 km) Tycho Crater that dominates the south lunar surface.

All impact craters once boasted ejecta rays of their own, which become dulled with prolonged exposure to the space environment. The ones we see today are relatively young, with Tycho for example being just 108 million years old.

Surprise asteroid flies by Earth at only 250 miles away

October 3, 2025

A small asteroid just gave the Earth a close buzz.

The little space rock, called 2025 TF, safely passed within roughly 250 miles (400 km) of our planet on Tuesday (Sept. 30) at 8:49 p.m. EDT (Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 0049 GMT), according to NASA data.

That flyby puts the asteroid at the same approximate altitude as the International Space Station.

While that's a close shave, it's actually not a record. Five years ago, asteroid 2020 VT4 flew by us at about 230 miles (370 km) in altitude.

Back then, the European Space Agency said telescopes only picked out the record-breaking 2020 visitor after that asteroid had safely whizzed by.

The new asteroid, 2025 TF, is small by space standards. It is about the size of a couch, with an estimated diameter of between three and nine feet (1.2 and 2.7 meters).

According to The Watchers, astronomers found this new asteroid a few hours after its closest approach, but NASA — due to the impacts of a government-wide shutdown — has not issued a statement confirming this.

Several space observatories did watch the asteroid, according to an Oct. 2 update from the Minor Planet Center, which shares information quickly with the astronomy community through an electronic circular.

The observations list suggests the Catalina Sky Survey was the first to detect 2025 TF, slightly past its closest approach, at 2:35 a.m. EDT (0635 GMT) on Oct. 1.

Given the NASA government shutdown, Space.com could not obtain comment from the agency about the circular.

That said, data from the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory show a nominal or “most likely” distance of the asteroid's flyby was 4,213 miles (6,780 km) from the center of the Earth.

A close-approach viewer of 2025 TF in CNEOS suggests the asteroid flew over Antarctica. Measured through the poles, the Earth's radius is 3,950 miles (6,357 km) — meaning the flyby was roughly 262 miles (423 km) above our planet.

That said, there are many uncertainties with the calculation given Earth's size, and flyby measurement techniques.

As a matter of course, NASA keeps an eye on the sky for extremely large asteroids that could pose a threat to our planet.

While a few have been tagged "potentially hazardous” due to their orbits and their size, there are no imminent, large threats to our planet found after decades of searching.

Smaller space rocks like 2025 TF are harder to spot, in part because the network of telescopes is optimized to catch larger and more threatening objects.

NASA and its partners, however, continue to catalog objects. Scientists have also said the technology is improving—so much so that astronomers often spot safe, close passes like this one several times a week.

Blue Origin reveals space tourists to launch on next New Shepard rocket

October 3, 2025

We now know which people will fly on Blue Origin's next space tourism mission — most of them, anyway.

On Wednesday (Oct. 1), Blue Origin, which was founded by Amazon's Jeff Bezos, announced the passenger list for NS-36, the next flight of its New Shepard suborbital vehicle. (We don't yet know when NS-36 will launch; that info is coming soon, according to Blue Origin.)

The company gave us five names for NS-36. There will also be a sixth, but that person "asked to remain anonymous until after the flight," Blue Origin wrote in an update on Wednesday.

Here's a brief rundown of the announced five, using information provided in the update.

  • Jeff Elgin, founder of FranChoice, a network that helps match people with franchise-owning opportunities.

  • Danna Karagussova, founder of Portals, "a multimodal ecosystem that features digital self-regulation tools that fuse art and science," according to Blue Origin. She's also a lifelong mountaineer.

  • Dr. Clint Kelly III, an electrical engineer with a long history in computer and robotics research. His work at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the 1980s helped lay the foundation for driverless cars, Blue Origin wrote. He's also a wildlife photographer who wrote a book about penguins. Kelly has already flown with Blue Origin, reaching space on the NS-22 mission in August 2022.

  • Aaron Newman, an entrepreneur who founded five software startups. Newman is also a veteran of the U.S. Army and an explorer, having descended into the Mariana Trench, the deepest spot in the world's oceans.

  • Vitalii Ostrovsky, a Ukrainian businessman, investor and globetrotter who has lived in more than 100 countries around the world.

As its name suggests, NS-36 will be the 36th spaceflight for New Shepard, which consists of a reusable booster and a reusable capsule. It will be just the 15th New Shepard tourist flight, however; most of the vehicle's missions have been uncrewed research flights.

New Shepard flights — crewed or uncrewed — last 10 to 12 minutes from liftoff to the parachute-aided touchdown of the capsule. Passengers get to experience a few minutes of weightlessness and see Earth against the blackness of space.

It's unclear how much this costs; Blue Origin has not revealed its ticket prices.

ESA inaugurates deep space antenna in Australia

04/10/2025

The European Space Agency (ESA) has expanded its capability to communicate with scientific, exploration and space safety missions across our Solar System with the inauguration of a new 35-m diameter deep space antenna – the fourth for Estrack, ESA’s deep space tracking network.

Located in New Norcia, about 115 km north of Perth, Western Australia, the ‘New Norcia 3’ antenna will help meet the agency’s fast-increasing data download needs and secure Europe’s independence and leadership in space.

Speaking at the inauguration on 4 October, Josef Aschbacher, Director General of ESA, said: “This strategic investment reinforces ESA’s deep-space communication capabilities and maximises the return of our missions' most valuable asset: data delivered from spacecraft voyaging far from Earth. New and exciting opportunities between the European and Australian space sectors are opening up with Australia announcing this week a mandate to begin negotiations on a cooperative agreement with ESA.”

Started in 2021 and delivered on schedule, this construction is the result of the outstanding capabilities of ESA, European and Australian industry, and excellent cooperation with our Australian partners.

When the new deep space antenna enters service in 2026, it will support ESA’s current flagship missions flown as part of the agency's scientific, exploration and space safety fleets, including Juice, Solar Orbiter, BepiColombo, Mars Express and Hera, and will be a critical enabler for upcoming missions including Plato, Envision, Ariel, Ramses and Vigil.

The new antenna, as part of the Estrack network, will also serve ESA’s efforts towards international collaboration.

As part of mutual cross-support arrangements with the agency’s partners, the new antenna can support other space agencies such as NASA, Japan’s JAXA, and India’s ISRO as well as commercial space missions, boosting science return and operational efficiency for all parties involved.

ESA's fourth deep space antenna, the second one on the site at New Norcia, is the most technologically sophisticated antenna to date. It incorporates advanced deep space communication capabilities, including components cryogenically cooled to around -263°C, near absolute zero.

This sensitivity allows it to detect extremely weak signals from distant spacecraft and to maximise data return. For transmission, a 20kW radio-frequency amplifier enables transmission of commands to spacecraft millions and even billions of kilometres away from Earth.

The antenna also features advanced clock and timing systems and world-class radio frequency communication tools and techniques to support deep space communication.

A symbol of ESA partnership with Australia

Opened in 2003, ESA’s Estrack station at New Norcia, Western Australia, demonstrates ESA's strong engagement in the Asia-Pacific region and especially Australia, part of the long-term cooperation between ESA and Australia in the space domain.

It enables significant economic, technological and scientific benefits for both partners, and will pave the way for further collaboration in areas such as communications, space safety and mission operations.

Enrico Palermo, Head of the Australian Space Agency, ASA, said: “Australia is well known as a trusted, experienced and capable operator in deep-space communications.

This investment by ESA and the Australian Government will unlock millions of dollars in local economic value as well as employment over the projected lifetime of 50 years.”

>>23692495

“It’s another chapter in the story of Australian and European partnership in space, which we will grow further as we begin to negotiate a new Cooperation Agreement between Australia and ESA,” he added.

The inauguration ceremony was led by ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher alongside Enrico Palermo, Head of the Australian Space Agency, and Rolf Densing, ESA Director of Operations, together with Stephen Dawson, the Western Australia Minister for Regional Development, Ports, Science and Innovation, Medical Research and the Kimberley, with Sabine Winton, Western Australia Minister for Education, Early Childhood, Preventative Health and the Wheatbelt, in attendance.

The new antenna has an estimated construction cost of EUR 62.3 million, covering antenna procurement and construction as well as upgrades to station buildings and services, with a contribution of EUR 3 million from the Australian Space Agency allocated to the evolution of the New Norcia Station.

Construction was led by European industry, with Thales Alenia Space (France) and Schwartz Hautmont Construcciones Metálicas (Spain) as co-prime contractors.

A significant portion of the budget was spent in Australia with the involvement of several Australian companies including TIAM Solutions, Thales Australia, Fredon and Westforce Construction.

“This new deep-space antenna is a cornerstone for European and Australian space industries,” said Hervé Derrey, CEO of Thales Alenia Space. "Its inauguration demonstrates our capacity to build strategic, world-class space infrastructure anywhere.

It required implementing advanced technologies and shows we are able to deliver the mission operations infrastructure that enables European scientists to go where they wish to explore.

Alongside Schwartz Hautmont and mtex antenna technology, we are very proud of this first major success for the E-DSA² consortium.”

A new antenna at ESA’s New Norcia ground station

New Norcia provides a strategic geographical position allowing around-the-clock coverage for deep space missions, with a perfect complement to ESA’s stations in Malargüe (Argentina) and Cebreros (Spain).

Once the new addition is made operational, New Norcia will become ESA’s first ground station equipped with two deep space antennas.

ESA’s ground station and antennas in New Norcia are locally operated by CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency. CSIRO similarly operates NASA’s deep space communication complex located at Tidbinbilla near Canberra.

Western Australia is also the location over which payloads launching from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, separate from their launcher.

Located a few hundred metres from the deep space antennas, a smaller, more agile 4.5-metre antenna tracks Vega-C and Ariane 6 rockets and acquires critical telemetry used to monitor the in-flight status of those launch vehicles.

The station also hosts a custom-built transponder antenna to calibrate the measurements of ESA’s Biomass mission, launched in 2025.

The Biomass Calibration Transponder will be visited a couple of times per year by the satellite over the course of its five-year survey of Earth’s forests.

A Preliminary View of 3I/ATLAS from Mars

October 4, 2025

In a new interview on Newsmax last night (available here), I discussed the seven anomalies of the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS. My segment was shared with Rep. Tim Burchet, a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability.

Following this interview, the deputy chief of staff for policy at the White House, Stephen Miller, discussed in a separate news segment (available here) the U.S. government shutdown, and was asked during his interview whether the U.S. President was briefed about 3I/ATLAS.

So far, no data from human-made Mars orbiters was publicly released by NASA or ESA. In a subsequent podcast interview with Brian Keating (accessible here), I mentioned anecdotally that the astrophotographer Simeon Schmauß stacked publicly-available images from the Mastcam-Z camera onboard NASA’s Perseverance rover on Mars and reported here a faint smudge at the location where 3I/ATLAS was expected to appear on the Martian sky.

Yesterday, October 3, 2025, was a special day, as 3I/ATLAS reached its closest approach to Mars at a separation of 29 million kilometers. This should have allowed multiple Mars orbiters to capture new imaging and spectroscopic data on 3I/ATLAS, as follows:

  1. The High Resolution Imaging Experiment (HiRISE) camera onboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) should have taken images with a spatial resolution of 30 kilometers per pixel, the highest yet for 3I/ATLAS.

The brightest pixel in these images can be used to infer the diameter of the nucleus of 3I/ATLAS, currently expected to be larger than 5 kilometers (as inferred here).

  1. The High-Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) as well as the OMEGA and SPectroscopy for the Investigation of the Characteristics of the Atmosphere of Mars (SPICAM) spectrometers onboard ESA’s Mars Express are expected to capture lower-resolution images and spectroscopic data on 3I/ATLAS.

  2. The Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSis) and the NOMAD spectrometer onboard ESA’s ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), are expected to produce color images and composition data.

The Infrared Spectrometer for ExoMars (ISEM) can be used to analyze the chemical composition of the plume of gas around 3I/ATLAS.

  1. The Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) onboard NASA’s MAVEN spacecraft can provide UV imaging and spectroscopy of 3I/ATLAS.

  2. Additional images and spectroscopic data are expected from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Camera (MoRIC) onboard China’s Tianwen-1 as well as the Emirates eXploration Imager (EXI) and Emirates Mars Infrared and Ultraviolet Spectrometers (EMIRS and EMUS) onboard the Hope Orbiter of UAE’s Emirates Mars Mission.

We are fortunate to benefit from the passage of an unusually massive and bright interstellar object (at least a thousand times more massive than the previous two:

1I/`Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov) in the inner solar system through an orbit that is aligned with the ecliptic plane of the planets around the Sun (with a random likelihood of order 0.2%) and that is timed for a close passage near Mars, Venus and Jupiter (with a likelihood of 0.005%).

Whether these extremely rare coincidences are a matter of random chance or extraterrestrial intelligent planning remains to be seen by the Mars orbiters.

Based on the data their images and spectrographs provide, humanity will know whether it should be grateful to mother nature or to the intelligence of a cosmic sibling.

Space Startup Wants to Deliver Cargo Anywhere on Earth in One Hour

October 4, 2025

A new kind of delivery system is being set up in low Earth orbit. Inversion Space, a relatively small space startup founded in 2021, is prepping its space-based delivery vehicle for flight.

The reusable spacecraft is designed to drop off cargo from space to Earth on a tight schedule, building a constellation of on-demand vehicles parked in orbit.

This week, Inversion unveiled its flagship Arc vehicle, a 4-foot wide, 8-foot tall spaceplane, cargo capsule hybrid capable of carrying 500 pounds (225 kilograms) of supplies.

The California-based startup is aiming to launch Arc by the end of 2026, building on the lessons learned from the inaugural mission of its demo vehicle earlier this year.

Space delivery

The idea behind building Arc is not just providing access to space, but rather being able to deliver cargo from orbit to anywhere on the planet within an hour’s time.

The autonomous vehicle will launch to low Earth orbit, where it will be positioned there to store cargo for up to five years.

When needed, Arc is built to reenter through the atmosphere and land on Earth using parachutes.

The spacecraft is equipped with a deorbit engine and an autonomously maneuverable parachute to help it make its way down to the surface.

It’s built to withstand hypersonic speeds, capture and deploy assets, as well as rendezvous with other spacecraft in orbit.

Inversion’s vision is to be able to deploy a constellation of its reusable vehicles in orbit, and return them to Earth based on the needs of its customers.

The company is specifically targeting military payloads, hoping the U.S. military can make good use of the vehicle’s speediness at returning to Earth.

“Arc reshapes defense readiness by enabling access to anywhere on Earth in under an hour – allowing for the rapid delivery of mission-critical cargo and effects to austere, infrastructure-limited, or denied environments,” Inversion Space wrote on X.

“This capability establishes space as a new global logistics domain, introducing unprecedented speed, reach, and resiliency for national security.”

Inversion launched its first vehicle in January as part of SpaceX’s Transporter-12 rideshare mission. The spacecraft, named Ray, was a demonstration of the company’s new technologies, testing its in-orbit systems and reentry capabilities.

The mission was mostly a success, but Ray experienced a propulsion malfunction that hindered its ability to reenter through Earth’s atmosphere.

“Our first spacecraft, Ray, has completed its mission on-orbit – serving as an extremely successful testbed for validating key technologies despite not attempting re-entry due to an on-orbit short circuit in a component preventing our deorbit engine from igniting,” the company wrote in a statement.

The company notes that nearly all systems on board the spacecraft were built in-house with a small team of 25 people.

Inversion may be a newcomer to the space industry, but the startup is aiming to build hundreds of its vehicles per year and establish a constellation of cargo reentry spacecraft by 2028.

Ukrainian drones strike Russian school – official

4 Oct, 2025 00:11

Ukraine has carried out a drone attack on the city of Gorlovka in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), injuring at least three people, according to local officials.

The Donbass city, which is located close to the front line, has been repeatedly shelled by Kiev’s forces.

According to Mayor Ivan Prikhodko, UAVs first struck on Friday afternoon, damaging energy infrastructure and vehicles. Later in the evening, drones hit a school and an apartment block.

DPR head Denis Pushilin said earlier that two teenagers in Gorlovka were injured by an explosive device in a separate incident.

According to Russia’s Foreign Ministry, 27 civilians were killed and around 160 wounded in Ukrainian strikes across the country between 15 and 24 September.

Gorlovka had a Soviet-era population of over 330,000, but this had fallen to around 240,000 by 2021, the year before the escalation of the Ukraine conflict.

The city is best known as the subject of a brutal assault by Ukrainian forces attempting to crush the Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) in July 2014.

Despite being repeatedly encircled by Kiev’s troops and subjected to heavy artillery and missile fire, the defenders repelled the attacks, holding their ground against superior numbers and equipment.

A major counter-offensive by DNR forces in late August 2014 ultimately relieved pressure, securing the city’s self-declared freedom.

The casualties inflicted on the civilian population by Ukrainian shelling were widely presented as evidence of Kiev’s aggression against its own people.

Israeli army ordered to halt Gaza City offensive – media

4 Oct, 2025 13:49

Israeli political leaders have ordered the IDF to halt the Gaza City offensive which was launched in September.

According to Israeli Army Radio and the public broadcaster Kan, the order came after US President Donald Trump called on West Jerusalem to stop launching strikes against the enclave as part of his attempt to end the war and free the hostages still held by Hamas.

Under Trump’s plan, the Palestinian armed group must release all remaining hostages within 72 hours of Israel suspending military operations in Gaza and withdrawing its troops “to the agreed upon line.”

Both Israel and Hamas have stated that they were ready for the prisoner swap, but West Jerusalem has not officially addressed Trump’s call for Israel to halt its strikes on Gaza.

On Saturday, Army Radio claimed that the US government had instructed Israel to reduce its operations in Gaza to “the minimum,” with troops on the ground strictly carrying out defensive maneuvers.

In a statement on X on Saturday, the Israeli army said that the area north of Wadi Gaza, which includes now-decimated Gaza City, is “still considered a dangerous combat zone” and has called on residents there to move south.

It added that Israeli forces continue to surround Gaza City, and “attempts to return there pose a significant risk.”

Aerial attacks across Gaza continued earlier on Saturday “but were sharply less intense,” Al Jazeera wrote. At least 20 people have been killed by Israeli attacks across the enclave since dawn.

According to Kan, negotiations between Israeli and US officials on Trump’s plan are expected to be held soon.

Trump's peace plan notably includes the release of 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences and 1,700 of them who were detained after October 7, 2023.

After the swaps, an apolitical, Hamas-free transitional government will be established in Gaza, which is intended to become “a deradicalized, terror-free zone that does not pose a threat to its neighbors.”

IDF confirms Gaza City strike, says it targeted Hamas operative who posed threat to troops

October 4, 2025 8:48 pm

The military confirms carrying out a strike in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood that reportedly killed 18 Palestinians, including children, saying it had targeted a Hamas operative.

The strike earlier today, in an area that has been under evacuation orders for weeks, targeted a Hamas operative who “posed a threat to troops operating in the area,” the IDF says in response to a query.

The military says it took “many steps” to mitigate civilian harm in the strike, including by using precision munitions, aerial surveillance, and additional intelligence information.

The IDF says it is aware of the reports of civilian casualties in the area, adding that it is further investigating.

“The IDF regrets any harm to uninvolved civilians and acts to minimize such harm as much as possible,” it adds.

The strike came as the IDF paused offensive operations in the Strip amid a push by US President Donald Trump to bring about an end to the war. The IDF is still conducting defensive operations, including airstrikes against threats to forces.

Netanyahu: I’m hopeful we’ll see return of all hostages in next few days, even during Sukkot

October 4, 2025 12:33 am

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says in a short video statement that he hopes Israel will see the return of all the hostages held in Gaza in the next few days.

Israel is “on the brink of a very big achievement,” he says. “It’s still not final. We are working hard on it.”

“I hope that, with God’s help, in the coming days, even during the Sukkot holiday, we will be able to announce the return of all the hostages — the living and the slain, in one go, with the IDF still deployed deep in Gaza.”

The week-long Sukkot festival begins on Monday evening.

Netanyahu blasts senior officials who argued that it would be impossible to get all the hostages back without leaving Gaza entirely.

Israel has recovered 207 hostages to this stage, he stresses. “But I never gave up on the rest of the hostages. And I never gave up on the rest of the war aims,” he says.

Netanyahu says he coordinated, with US President Donald Trump, “a diplomatic move that turned the situation on its head,” while IDF troops were pressing into Gaza City.

“Instead of Israel being isolated, Hamas will be isolated,” he says. In the first stage, he says, all the hostages will be released and the IDF will redeploy to positions that allow it to continue to oversee Gaza.

Netanyahu: Hamas will be disarmed, Gaza demilitarized — ‘diplomatically or militarily’

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, continuing his short video statement, argues that the only reason Hamas is willing to release all the hostages is military and diplomatic pressure.

He dismisses the claim, which he says is made by his critics, that “Hamas was ready a year or even two years ago to free all our hostages without a full [IDF] withdrawal from Gaza.

That’s a complete lie,” he says. “What brought the change in Hamas’s stance was solely the military and diplomatic pressure we brought to bear.”

Netanyahu returns to an oft-used line that he withstood “enormous pressure” internationally and at home to end the war and give in to Hamas demands.

He thanks US President Donald Trump for his firm support and for joining in the strikes on Iran’s nuclear program.

He says in English that “it’s true; it’s for real” that Israel can get the release of all the hostages without withdrawing from the Gaza Strip. “With God’s help, it will happen very soon.”

Netanyahu says he told Israel’s negotiating team, led by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, to head to Cairo to nail down the “technical details” of the hostage release.

“Our intention, and the intention of our American friends, is to bind the negotiations into a matter of days,” says Netanyahu. He notes that Trump has today said he won’t tolerate any Hamas delaying tactics.

In the second phase of the deal, says Netanyahu, “Hamas will be disarmed, and the Gaza Strip will be demilitarized.”

“It will happen either diplomatically, according to the Trump plan, or militarily, by us,” Netanyahu warns.

White House shares story on Trump saying PM has ‘no choice’ but to be fine with Gaza plan

The White House’s “Rapid Response 47” account on X shares a report from Axios that quotes US President Donald Trump saying of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu:

“He was fine with [the US plan for ending the war in Gaza]. He’s got to be fine with it. He has no choice. With me, you got to be fine.”

The post comes as Israeli television airs a speech from Netanyahu making the case for the plan to the Israeli public.

Russian Drone Strike Hits Passenger Train at Shostka Station; Dozens Injured

Oct. 4, 2025, 2:06 pm

A Russian drone struck a passenger train at the railway station in the city of Shostka on Saturday, injuring dozens of people, regional and national officials said.

Oleh Hryhorov, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, said on Telegram that Russia “deliberately struck civilian infrastructure,” and that rescuers, medics, and other emergency services were working at the scene as an operational headquarters was set up.

President Volodymyr Zelensky posted video from the site on Telegram and called the attack “a savage Russian drone strike,” saying dozens were known to have been injured and that both passengers and Ukrzaliznytsia railway employees were among the victims.

He renewed an appeal for decisive international action against what he called “terror.”

“The Russians could not have been unaware that they were striking civilians. And this is terror the world must not ignore,” Zelensky stated. “Every day, Russia takes people’s lives.

And only strength can make them stop. We’ve heard resolute statements from Europe and America – and it’s high time to turn them all into reality, together with everyone who refuses to accept murder and terror as normal.

Lip service is not enough now. Strong action is needed.”

Emergency services said people were being given medical help and rescue operations were ongoing.

MYSTERY ON THE REAGAN How 200 sailors witnessed ‘fiery UFO orb’ floating above deck of US Navy aircraft carrier… and it’s never been explained

Updated: 4:11 ET, Oct 4 2025

HUNDREDS of sailors stood mesmerised as they gazed up at what they claim was a 40ft-wide "UFO orb" hovering above a US Navy aircraft carrier.

A "glowing orange ball" spotted over the flight deck of the nuclear-powered USS Ronald Reagan has gone down as one of the most mysterious sightings in US military history.

And it's never been explained.

Documentary filmmaker Dave C. Beaty - who produced 2019 film The Nimitz Encounters about another famous Navy UFO case - has been probing the mystery for years.

Beaty has interviewed a number of sailors who, to this day, insist that what they saw off the East Coast that night in early 2004 was a UFO.

Efforts to understand what took place have been hampered by the fact no official confirmation was ever given.

And one witness claimed senior officers acted suspiciously in the aftermath.

But Beaty told The Sun he believes there are more witnesses who can provide testimony - and believes their accounts are key to narrowing down when the event actually took place.

Seaman Patrick Gokey, who was serving on the ship that night, said the object "did not move in ways that I’ve seen other aircraft maneuver and it was faster than anything I’ve ever seen".

He estimated as many as 200 sailors saw it.

And former Navy quartermaster Karol Olesiak, who was on watch from 8pm to 12am and was responsible for the ship's logbook, also recalled the glowing orb.

He claimed it was about 40ft wide and hovered above the carrier for four hours from around 8pm onwards.

He described it as reminding him of Biblical descriptions of the "burning bush" and having "negative energy".

Olesiak alleged he was told not to log the encounter by the Officer of the Deck. He told The Sun: "I asked, should I be logging this?

"I might have asked the conning officer and I don’t remember exactly what he said, but the impression that I got was that this should not be in the official log."

He also said there was an eerie calm among senior officers and bridge crew - as if they had seen such phenomena before.

"The entire bridge team was pilots," he said. "My assumption is yes [they had seen something similar before], but I asked an officer if any of them were talking about it the next day and he said 'yes'."

Olesiak believes its "possible" someone may have taken photos and videos of the object - but the incident occurred before camera phones were common and crew did not carry their mobiles.

"It’s hard to believe somebody would be sitting on it for this long," he said.

Derek Smith, a former Boatswain’s Mate Seaman, said he remembers the sighting "as if it occurred yesterday", calling it the "most mysterious thing" he has ever seen.

Smith, who was on starboard watch, said he noticed "all the people on the flight deck" looking up at the object.

He said the next day was simply "normal" - but his shipmates were discussing it, some dismissing the giant object as a "weather balloon" - to which he said "hell no".

"I [can] still visualise this object in my head to a tee regardless of 18 years having passed," Smith previously told The Sun.

"I do believe the government knows more than what they lead us to believe."

Smith stressed he was "an average Joe" with no paranormal experiences before or since.

He said: "All I know is it was something I could not explain. I could say now though I am starting to feel like I witnessed something special."

Derek's colleague claims she tried to report it to the bridge, but was told to "quit smoking crack".

And she also claims that while speaking to the ship's bridge, they said they were tracking the object on radar as it followed them doing "swoop" maneuvers.

Some of the witness testimonies vary, offering different times of day and duration of the encounter - but all agree the orange fireball was spotted near the ship.

Constructing a timeline

Beaty has spent years piecing together the timeline of the encounter - and believes "many more people" saw the mysterious event.

He told The Sun: "In my effort to understand the timeline I still have to go on some of the witnesses who arrived on the ship late in 2003 in the November and December timeline.

"It's interesting to begin narrowing it down.

"The ship left Norfolk in May of 2004 with a partial crew to sail to its new home port in San Diego.

"The command summary report shows what the vessel was doing during those months - at port or out to sea.

"So there really are only a few times this event could have happened. "With thousands of people on the ship - it's likely many more people had seen this event."

Beaty said the aftermath echoed other cases of UFO cases reported by US servicemen.

He explained: "In reading Robert Hastings' book on nukes, many of his reports from Air Force bases had a similar-looking UFO - a glowing orange ball or oval.

"In fact, one of his witnesses had a similar experience with all of these men seeing the UFO - and then seemingly have no interest in it moments later. Like it never happened.

"I tried to contact that veteran but he had passed. But it's certainly a curious part of this case."

Now, Beaty is urging sailors to come forward with new information or clues - to finally crack the case.

With UFOs a hot topic in Washington, Beaty admitted it would be "nice to have some answers" over what he saw on the Reagan - and believes the government "knows more than what they lead us to believe".

Is the Pentagon reluctant to investigate UFO reports?

But the Pentagon has been accused of not doing enough to probe unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs) - the preferred term for UFOs.

Those who claim to have seen UAPs argue this is a national security concern that successive U.S. governments have failed to take seriously.

The Pentagon created the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office in 2022 to track UAPs.

757 cases from across the world were reported to US authorities between 1 May 2023 and 1 June 2024 - including 272 older sightings that had not previously been recorded.

Most reports occurred in airspace, with 49 at altitudes of at least 62 miles.

Witnesses included commercial and military pilots as well as ground observers.

After reviewing the evidence, the Pentagon concluded in a report last November: “It is important to underscore that, to date, AARO has discovered no evidence of extraterrestrial beings, activity or technology.”

The report found hundreds of sightings were in fact misidentified balloons, birds, drones and satellites.

Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network was also often mistaken for UFOs. But not all sightings have been explained.

The Pentagon is still probing a report from commercial flight crew of a near-miss with a "cylindrical object" over the Atlantic Ocean off New York.

Intelligence chiefs have urged servicemen to come forward and said they hoped the stigma around reporting was now breaking down.
