Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker says Trump is set to federalize the state's National Guard

The Illinois governor said there was "no need for military troops on the ground." (he had to pretend to block Trump, but inside he is extremely grateful)

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker on Saturday said he was informed by the Trump administration that the Defense Department plans to federalize 300 members of the Illinois National Guard and deploy them within his state.

“It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a Governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will,” Pritzker said in a statement, adding that he was given an ultimatum by Defense Department officials to “call up your troops, or we will.”

“I want to be clear: there is no need for military troops on the ground in the State of Illinois,” Pritzker added. “I will not call up our National Guard to further Trump’s acts of aggression against our people.”

The White House and the Defense Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Pritzker’s statement or a potential deployment of troops in Illinois, though the president has for weeks threatened to surge federal law enforcement and National Guard troops to Chicago.

The news comes as the Trump administration and officials in Portland, Oregon, await a ruling from a federal judge regarding a separate deployment of National Guard troops that the president authorized to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities in the city on Friday.

That move activated 200 National Guard troops in Portland as part of the president’s stated agenda to curb crime in American cities.

The state of Oregon and the city of Portland sued the Trump administration, seeking a temporary restraining order in an attempt to stop the president from sending National Guard troops there, pushing back on the president’s claims that protests were violent or out of control.

The Defense Department announced that it had activated troops to support and protect federal employees and property in the Portland area while they await a federal judge’s decision in the case.

The case comes after Trump said in a social media post last week that he was directing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to deploy troops to Portland, claiming that the city was “under siege from attack by Antifa and other domestic terrorists.”

The president has pointed to protests near Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities in Oregon as evidence of his claims.

“We ultimately have a perception-versus-reality problem,” Caroline Turco, senior deputy city attorney for Portland, said during a hearing in front of U.S. District Judge Karin J. Immergut on Friday. “The perception is that it is World War II out here. The reality is that this is a beautiful city with a sophisticated resource that can handle the situation.”

A lawyer for the federal government — Deputy Assistant Attorney General Eric Hamilton — pointed to isolated incidents of protesters lighting incendiary devices and throwing rocks as evidence that troops are necessary to defend against “cruel radicals who have laid siege” to ICE facilities.

Trump has deployed National Guard troops to two other American cities this year — Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. In California, the Trump administration said it sent National Guard troops and Marines to quell anti-ICE protests, while in Washington, the president said the National Guard troops were deployed to fight crime.

In early September, a federal judge ruled that Trump’s deployment of Marines and National Guardsmen to Los Angeles was illegal. Days after that ruling, attorneys for Washington, D.C., also sued to challenge the deployment of troops in the nation’s capital.

The president has also threatened to deploy National Guard troops to other American cities run by Democratic mayors, like Baltimore and New Orleans.

Trump’s decision to deploy troops to multiple American cities received renewed scrutiny earlier this week after he told senior military leaders on Monday that “we should use some of these dangerous cities as training grounds for our military, National Guard.”

Ex-NFL star Mark Sanchez stabbed in the chest during 'fight with food delivery driver over parking outside restaurant'

Police were called to downtown Indianapolis at around 12:30am following reports of a disturbance before finding two injured people, one of whom was Sanchez.

The 38-year-old, who was in town to cover Sunday's NFL game between the Colts and the Las Vegas Raiders as a commentator for Fox Sports, is now recovering at a local hospital in 'stable' condition, the network has announced.

According to FOX59 anchor Angela Ganote, Sanchez was not cooperative with police when they first arrived on the scene.

Ganote alleges that another man listed as the victim in the police report informed cops that he was delivering food when the Fox commentator told him he needed to move his vehicle and couldn't park where he was.

Sanchez is accused of threatening, following and attacking the man, who tried to pepper spray him unsuccessfully. He alleges it was at that time that he defended himself with a knife.

Officers noted that the alleged victim had a significant injury to his face, Ganote added. Sanchez has not yet been interviewed by police.

A separate FOX59 report claims he was stabbed in the chest during the altercation, which took place near Loughmiller’s Pub & Eatery.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department released a statement on Saturday afternoon regarding the incident, which took place near Senate Avenue and West Washington Street.

'The incident involved two adult males, resulting in one man receiving lacerations and the other sustaining injuries consistent with stab wounds. Detectives believe this was an isolated incident between the two men and not a random act of violence,' the IMPD statement reads.

'Both individuals, who are not local residents, have been identified. IMPD Aggravated Assault detectives are continuing the investigation and have reviewed video footage of the incident. Both men received medical treatment. The man with the apparent stab wounds remains hospitalized in stable condition.'..

@TriciaOhio

This morning, during routine patrolling in Broadview, in the same area of Chicago that law enforcement were assaulted yesterday, our brave law enforcement officers were rammed by vehicles and boxed in by 10 cars.

Agents were unable to move their vehicles and exited the car.One of the drivers who rammed the law enforcement vehicle was armed with a semi-automatic weapon. Law enforcement was forced to deploy their weapons and fire defensive shots at an armed US citizen who drove herself to the hospital to get care for wounds.

The armed woman was named in a

@CBP

intelligence bulletin last week for doxing agents and posting online ‘Hey to all my gang let’s fuck those mother fuckers up, don’t let them take anyone.’

Thankfully, no law enforcement officers were seriously injured in this attack.

Pritzker’s Chicago Police Department is leaving the shooting scene and refuses to assist us in securing the area. There is a growing crowd and we are deploying special operations to control the scene.

This is an evolving situation and we will give more information as soon as it becomes available.

Wyoming Hunter Calls Bull Moose To Within 10 Feet To Experience ‘Pure Rush’

A Wyoming hunter called in a bull moose to within 10 feet of where he stood while hunting elk Tuesday. The hunter said he experienced a “pure rush,” and was safe because he was behind a tree. “I’m brave, but I’m not an idiot,” he said.

A Wyoming outdoorsman took a break from elk hunting Tuesday and called a bull moose to within 10 feet, simply by grunting at it.

Owen Miller said he’s called bull moose in a few times, though never quite that close. No artificial game call is required, such as the tubes hunters use to imitate the bugling of bull elk.

“I just grunt. If you listen to them (bull moose) it’s an easy grunt to imitate. It’s like you’re saying ‘rump’ with a grunt,” he said.

He wasn’t hunting moose, but there are a few around in the area where he’s been hunting elk, he said, without disclosing any specifics about the location.

Moose are in the rut, or mating season this time of year. When he gets an opportunity to call a bull moose in, and the circumstances seems safe enough, he takes it.

“I always make sure I’m behind a tree or something like that,” he said.

“I’m brave, but I’m not an idiot,” he added.

He said there were three trees between him and the bull he called in on Tuesday. But even so, when the bull got too close for comfort, he scolded it. That startled the bull away.

He had a similar experience during the same hunting trip, on Sept. 5, when he called another bull in close.

“He was raking the sagebrush with his antlers, and he rolled his eyes at me,” Miller said.

“Whenever I call a bull in close, it’s a rush every time,” he said.

Called From A Distance

Miller said he spotted the bull on Tuesday from about 150 yards away in thick timber.

There was another, smaller bull there, as well as a cow moose that was making vocalizations indicating that she was in heat, Miller said.

“I grunted at him (the larger bull) and he turned toward me, and I was like, ‘here we go,’” Miller said.

The bull walked right in, grunting as he came.

Once it was directly in front of his position, standing broadside, Miller said the bull was eyeing him, as if it was trying to figure out what he was.

“His head started to drop, and that’s when I decided that was enough, and I started speaking, telling him to leave,” Miller said.

There are moose hunting tags available for the area he was in. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime tag that’s extremely difficult to draw.

Miller said he’d like to put in for one of the tags, even though he’s developed an affection for the moose he sees lumbering about, because of their awkward, goofy nature.

“Even the big bull moose, I think they’re the cutest thing,” he said.

“I get as much joy out of filming and photographing the wildlife as I do out of the hunting,” added Miller, who likes to share videos of his wildlife encounters on his YouTube channel.

Rut Is Timed For May Moose Babies

Wyoming wildlife photographer Jorn Vangoidtsenhoven has followed moose in the Grand Teton National Park area for years.

He previously told Cowboy State Daily that photographing bulls during the rut can be tricky business. Like Miller, we recommended staying behind a tree or something else big and solid.

Vangoidtsenhoven said that the moose rut, which hits its peak in October, is timed with the cow moose gestation period, to give moose calves the best chances of survival after they’re born in the spring.

“Babies are typically born around May to maximize survival chances in the spring, when food is growing and giving them the longest time possible to grow enough before winter hits,” Vangoidtsenhoven said.

When His Pilot Died Mid-Flight, Wyoming Attorney General Had To Take The Controls1/4or 5

Wyoming Attorney General James “Jim” Barrett was flying to a conference in Riverton in 1969 when his pilot died mid-flight. Not a pilot himself, Barrett had to take the controls. He buzzed Rawlins at 230 mph, crash-landed the plane and survived.

Dale Killingbeck

Wyoming Attorney General James “Jim” Barrett carried a briefcase and overnight bag as he climbed into the state-owned Cessna 206 on Thursday, Dec. 4, 1969, at Cheyenne Regional Airport for a routine flight to Riverton.

Appointed to the job by his longtime friend Gov. Stanley Hathaway in early 1967, Barrett had been asked to address the annual gathering of the Wyoming Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts in Riverton that evening.

He also needed to be in Casper for a Natrona County District Court case at 1:30 p.m. the following day.

Barrett’s request to use a state plane had been approved.

Wyoming Aeronautics Commission pilot George Kealey was a familiar face. He had flown Barrett on another occasion, and once Kealey checked the plane over, they loaded up and took off.

“I put the briefcase on my lap,” Barrett told state historian Mark Junge on July 8, 2010, as he recorded an oral history for the event that was about to unfold. “But he wanted to talk.”

Kealey would not talk for long. And that day would become chiseled into Barrett’s memory for the rest of his life.

“State Pilot Dies In Air,” proclaimed the headline in Cheyenne's Wyoming Eagle at the top of the front page on Dec. 5, 1969. “Barrett Hurt In Crash.”

The headline could have been much different. The only reason it wasn't was reflected in a second headline, this one in the Casper Star-Tribune on Dec. 6.

“Barrett’s Wife Says: It’s A Miracle That He’s Here,” the newspaper reported on the front page.

How the miracle unfolded began Dec. 4 with the plane climbing to cruising altitude and then doing 200 knots (230 mph) as the nose pointed northwest toward Riverton over the Laramie area. Pilot and passenger chatted about family and made other small talk until they approached the high mountain terrain.

Above Bairoil, Barrett recalled looking out at snowcapped mountains to the north.

All of a sudden, the plane lurched upward and Barrett saw his pilot looking out the window toward the left wing.

The plane lurched again.

‘Are You OK?’

“So, I called out, ‘George, are you OK?’” Barrett recalled. “No response. I called out a couple of other times, no response. So, I reached over, and I took his shoulders to turn his head around and his face was as white as a sheet, perspiration was on him, his eyes were glazy.”

Attempts to wipe the pilot’s face with a handkerchief, then a massage of his chest, proved fruitless.

The pilot’s left hand was still on the yoke of the aircraft, and his right arm and hand fell limp at his side. Barrett thought Kealey was experiencing a heart attack.

Instead, he would learn later that a cerebral hemorrhage was in the process of draining Kealey’s life away.

In an article for The Denver Post’s Sunday Empire Magazine on Dec. 5, 1976, Barrett wrote that he believed the pilot tried to speak but could not.

As he looked out the cockpit window, Barrett could see mountains ahead and, while the plane was higher than those peaks at the moment,Barrett quickly understood that he needed to make a decision.

“I knew so little about that airplane, I think I probably was just petrified right then. I couldn’t believe what was happening,” he told Junge. “I picked up the radio, and I called out and said, ‘This is Jim Barrett and George Kealey has had a heart attack, and he can’t fly the airplane, I don’t know how to fly it. Will somebody help me?’”

So began an ordeal that he and his family believed was nothing less than a miracle for a man who had stormed Omaha Beach in June 1944 and had found himself behind enemy German lines during the Battle of Bulge as a U.S. Army corporal at the end of 1944 and early 1945.

Not Mechanically Inclined

Son Richard Barrett, 72, a retired Cheyenne attorney, saidhis dad was someone who probably didn’t know the difference between a Phillips-head and common screwdriver.

And Jim Barrett himself wrote in the Post article that as an attorney in Lusk, Wyoming, he had flown on charter flights with local pilot Less Huff who had encouraged him to take flying lessons.

“But I always told him I had no desire to be a pilot. I wasn’t mechanically inclined,” Barrett wrote.

As the magnitude of events weighed on him that fateful Thursday, Barrett made some decisions that involved his lawyerly logic and his powers of observation from past flights.

He told Junge in his interview that he thought about going to Casper where there was a long runway, but knew he would have to fly over mountainous terrain.

He also looked at the instrument panel, said he knew how to use the “wheel” and understood where the throttle was but was worried about the control for the “gas and oil” mixture as well as the “big red cylinder with a P” that did something with the propeller.

He decided he was not going to mess with those controls. He also recalled not knowing what part of the foot pedals represented the brake and the rudders, so he would not touch those either.

After turning the yoke on his side of the airplaneenough to break Kealey’s grip free on the pilot side, he tried to get a feel for the plane before deciding to try and go south to Rawlins.

He studied the instrument panel and saw they were flying at 200 knots. He had looked around the cockpit to see if there was any material that would help with flying the machine.

He found none. Kealy was still sitting fairly steady in his seat.

“I then said prayers for both of us,”Barrett wrote in the Denver Post article. “I was certain this was going to be our last day alive.”

Once headed south, he found the Sinclair refinery and Interstate 80 and followed it to Rawlins, where he located the airfield.

Listening In

Meanwhile in Casper, 15-year-old Donnie Cooksey was with his father, John, who owned a flight school. They saw a crowd gathered around the FAA flight service facility at the Casper/Natrona County International Airport and went over to investigate.

We could hear him talking on the radio," Cooksey said. "When he got up high enough that the radio in the airplane could be heard in Casper, we could hear him talking. And he was zooming around and going up and down, we of course didn’t hear everything that was said, but it was interesting.”

Cooksey said the FAA flight service facility guy called the facility operator in Rawlins and recalled that Kealey had been talking to the Rawlins facility.

“As I recall, the pilot (Kealey) had been on the radio talking to flight service about something, that happened a lot in those days,” he said. “And the flight service guy in Rawlins had it figured out who it was.We didn’t know at that time it was Barrett, we knew who the pilot was.”

Cooksey said his dad knew Kealey and that more broadcasts came from the plane from Barrett: “It was interesting to eerie to hear him.”

Headsets for pilots were not frequently used, and typically there would be a speaker and hand-held microphone for communication with the ground, Cooksey said.

During the ordeal,Barrett later reported never receiving any communication from anyone. All he heard were “squelch” noises. Cooksey said it could have been due to his not completely releasing the mic button or the button being jammed.

Once above the airfield in Rawlins, Barrett told Junge that he flew over the airport two or three times at 200 knots, but it was just “ridiculous to think about landing.”

He even considered trying to land on I-80 but there was too much traffic.

Meanwhile, on the ground the Rawlins firefighters, Carbon County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Wyoming Highway Patrol and other emergency responders had been alerted to the situation above them in the air. They were trying to follow the plane as it crisscrossed the city.

Buzzing Rawlins

A Rawlins resident, Clark Whitson told a reporter in a story published in the Dec. 7, 1969, Casper Star-Tribune that he heard the plane buzzing overhead and making turns at high speed, “about wide open,” he said.

He said the plane flew low over houses and narrowly missed the Catholic Church steeple, and nearly hit the city-county building, before roaring back toward the airport.

Whitson and friends then drove to the airport. There he saw the plane flown by Barrett make passes overhead, one so low that they bailed out of their pickup.

On the sixth or seventh pass he came in low going east and clipped a power line with one wing while making a steep bank turn,” he said.

In the cockpit, Barrett wrote in the Denver Post storythat Kealey started vomiting over the control panel and then blood started flowing from his nose and mouth. His body was thrashing and pressed Barrett against the right side of the aircraft.

“My head was pinned to the window on my right, and my body was forced against the door,” he wrote.“With as much pressure as I could muster, I slowly moved George’s body away until I obtained enough leverage on the wheel to pull it back and turn it to the left.

="I had no idea where the plane was in relation to the ground, but I recall vividly seeing the top of the church where my wife and I were wed. I also recall skimming telephone poles on a street leading eastward.”

After recovering the plane, Barrett again tried to make a radio call but only heard squelch noises from the speaker. Kealey kept thrashing and moving and pushing against the yoke on his side of the plane.

Barrett pleaded with him to stay “on your side” of the plane.

Trying To Help

Meanwhile, State Aeronautics Director Marv Stevenson, alerted to the situation, had arrived in his plane above Rawlins, and Barrett recalled seeing that a plane was “attempting to guide me.”

He learned later that Stevenson was trying to direct him to the Sinclair airport, which had a longer and wider runway than the one in Rawlins.

As twilight approached at 4 p.m. in the darkest month of the year, and he grew tired from wrestling with the plane for more than an hour, Barrett wrote in the Denver Post article that he understood that the plane was short on fuel.

He flew back across Rawlins and determined he was going to land in the airport. After crossing a power line he knew was there from previous passes, he would cut the throttle and attempt a landing.

He kept his eye on what he called the “balancing gauge.”

But just as he was about to cross the power line with his left hand on the throttle,Kealey’s body lurched against the yoke and caused the right wing tip to hit the power line.

“I saw a tremendous streak of electricity shoot up and I believed the plane would explode,” he wrote. “Instead, it bounced about eight times as I flew about 50 feet above the runway.Again, almost by a miracle, I was able to pull the plane up.”

Exhausted, Barrett flew east and then banked right and headed back toward Rawlins. He did not want to stay in the air much longer because darkness was setting in and he could see vehicles gathering at the airport. He was worried that if he tried to land, the plane might veer off and hit the hangars and vehicles.

As he tried to regain altitude, Barrett recalled the plane engine cut out. He flicked a switch, hoping it was the reserve tank. Ahead, he saw level terrain and decided to bring the plane down. The motor ran for a moment, then sputtered.

The nose went down and he wrote that he pulled on the yoke to get the plane back up into a glide. Ahead he saw a small farm with a barn and fence and beyond it seemed level ground.

“I was relieved and surprisingly relaxed. I said another prayer, and I remember calling out: ‘George, please stay in your seat now,” he wrote in the Denver Post article.

The Landing

Barrett told Junge in his interview that he knew Stevenson was flying above him. As he approached the ground, he tried to pull the nose up, like he had seen pilots do on his previous flights.

All three wheels of the Cessna hit the hard, cold Wyoming earth and the plane bounced up into the air again. Barrett told Junge he recalled thinking, “Boy, it’s going so fast that when it comes down it will be a real mess.”

When the wheels hit the ground again, all three touched and then the nose wheel collapsed. The plane, now on two wheels, was being driven into the ground and the propeller and engine began to be pushed back into the passenger compartment.

Barrett said just as he thought it was going to be all over and he would be crushed, the left wheel hit a boulder and the plane stopped and immediately flipped.

“It sent my face into the panel and with such force that it pressed my left eye back in the socket three-eighths of an inch. Broke all the bones around the eye and sent me rocketing back with such force in my chair that I broke the seat off the rail in back of me,” Barrett told Junge. “And I am upside down in the airplane with the plane tipped over on its wings.”

Barrett saw a flame in the motor and realized that he was still alive. He took his seat belt off, tried to check on Kealey, and crawled out of the plane. The door had been ripped away. He recalled using the same handkerchief that he tried to help Kealey with to stop the blood that was pouring from his own face.

A firetruck pulled up, and a firefighter ran toward Barrett. Barrett recognized him as Sam Kelly, who served on the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission.

“I was so glad to see someone, I stuck my hand out and said, ‘How are you Sam?’” he recalled.

Barrett then collapsed, unconscious.

Family Learns About Crash

Back in Cheyenne at the Barrett home, Richard Barrett, then 17, remembers that evening their doorbell rang. When he went to answer the door, Monsignor James O’Neill, their parish priest from St. Mary’s Cathedral, stood there and asked if his mother, Ann, was home.

The priest then informed the family that their husband and father had been in a plane crash and was undergoing treatment at the hospital in Rawlins.

Then an assistant attorney general, Jack Speight, called and told them that a state highway patrolman would be by to pick them up and take them to Rawlins.

“Of course we were mortified, because we were trying to visualize a situation where my dad would be in a hospital, having survived a plane crash,” Richard Barrett said.

They were taken by the highway patrolman to the hospital and walked into the room where James Barrett was being treated.

“Mom and I were absolutely shocked, because my dad looked like a bomb had exploded,” he said. “He was so bruised and battered in his face … yet he was alive, and he survived what many pilots have told me over the years would be a one in a million survival to have crash-landed a plane and got out of it.”

Richard Barrett said years later when he was a practicing attorney, he was in a cafe in Rawlins and a man walked up to him and asked if he was Richard Barrett. He then proceeded to tell him that he was a bread truck driver in Rawlins and that on one of his dad’s low flights over the city, the plane was coming right at his truck.

He recounted how he jumped out of the truck as it was moving, and it ran down another 30 feet and hit a car parked at the bottom of the hill. He had rolled into the street.

“He said my dad had pulled up just in time before hitting the street,” Richard Barrett said.

Surgery Needed

James Barrett would undergo surgery to the bones around his left eye and doctors put his eye back in place by packing gauze behind his eye, putting it in through the roof of his mouth. He had also had a compressed vertebra.

The crash occurred following the infamous Black 14 incident involving Black athletes removed from the University of Wyoming football team after they planned a protest using black armbands against Brigham Young University and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A federal lawsuit ensued. James Barrett had been representing the state and University of Wyoming board in the case and worked on it from his hospital bed and then during home recovery, Richard Barrett said.

James Barrett told Junge that the crash investigation ruled Kealey was alive until the crash, so his family could receive workman’s compensation.

The crash story would never be far from the older Barrett’s mind, and Richard Barrett remembers his dad telling him how during the flight memories flashed before him. James Barrett told his son he thought about his family, Hathaway and their friendship, his experiences in battle overseas, and even his being able to hear in person Winston Churchill give his Lend-Lease speech to Congress in 1942 before being sent overseas.

James Barrett was the son of Frank Barrett, a longtime Wyoming congressman, governor and U.S. senator who was serving in Washington when their son was overseas.

Richard Barrett said his dad was a devout Catholic and he told his son while in the air that day he prayed a lot.

“It’s truly a miracle,” Richard Barrett said, looking back on his dad’s survival.

Dean McClain, a longtime commercial pilot and member of the Wyoming Aviation Heritage League, agrees. He said experiencing the loss of the pilot and trying to control the aircraft would have been challenging.

“You’ve got to get the airplane slowed down to land it, and I think he knew that, he wasn’t certain how to do it and that was the big issue,” he said.

If communication had been successful from others trying to contact the plane, the situation may have resolved at the airport instead of the field outside of town. McClain said landing the plane would not have been too complicated and Barrett’s concerns about the fuel mixture and propeller pitch would have been quickly resolved.

“He was kind of awed by all the stuff on the panel,” he said. “The only things that would have mattered would have been the throttle and the trim.”

Two Pilots Policy

McClain said as a result of the crash, the state implemented a policy requiring two pilots on every state flight.

James Barrett in his interview with Junge said that while he never went up in a small plane again, he would have considered it if he knew how to operate the radio and the difference between the rudders and brakes.

“If I learned those things, I think I would have been able to land the plane,” he said.

James Barrett continued as Wyoming’s attorney general into 1971. That year he was appointed by President Richard Nixon to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit based in Denver. He died on Nov. 7, 2011, after serving more than 40 years on the bench.

Ukrainians think corruption is worsening – survey

Most citizens say graft has increased since 2022, according to a new national poll

Most Ukrainians have said corruption in the country has worsened since escalation of the conflict with Russia in February 2022, a new survey by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) has shown.

In findings released on Friday, the poll revealed that 71% of respondents believe the level of corruption has increased over the past three years. Another 20% said they had not noticed any change, while only 5% felt the situation had improved. The survey was conducted over September 19-28 and included 1,029 participants across the country.

According to the survey, even among those who trust Vladimir Zelensky,62% believe corruption has increased since the escalation of the conflict.

The institute reported that this negative perception was consistent across all regions, concluding that “corruption remains an extremely serious problem in the eyes of the public.”

Ukraine has faced a string of corruption scandals in recent months involving government officials, medical professionals, clergy, and military recruiters. Some cases include bribery schemes to help individuals evade conscription during the ongoing mobilization efforts.

Corruption in defense procurement has also come under scrutiny. In August, several high-ranking officials were detained over a scheme involving the purchase of electronic warfare systems. Earlier this year, the Defense Ministry was linked to a food supply fraud case worth nearly $18 million. In January 2024, investigators uncovered a $40 million embezzlement operation involving fake weapons contracts.

In July, Zelensky attempted to bring the country’s anti-corruption bodies, NABU and SAPO, under government control only for street protests and pressure from Western sponsors to force him to back off on the plan two weeks later.

The issue of corruption has drawn international attention. That same month, US President Donald Trump remarked that Ukraine had been expected to use American aid to buy military equipment but suggested not all the funds were being properly spent. Kremlin spokesmanDmitry Peskov claimed Western aid had to a large extent been “stolen in Ukraine.”

Former US National Security Adviser Michael Waltz called Ukraine “one of the most corrupt nations in the world” and urged stricter monitoring of foreign assistance.

Russia strikes Ukrainian arms plants and power sources – MOD

Energy giant Naftogas has reported sustaining “critical” damage in the long-range operation

Russian forceshave struck multiple Ukrainian military facilities and the gas infrastructure that powersthem in an overnight long-range operation, the Defense Ministry reported on Friday.

The ministry said missiles and long-range drones launched overnight from several platforms were used in the barrage and that all designated targets were hit.

Ukrainian state-owned energy company Naftogaz described the attack as the largest strike on gas extraction sites in the country to date, adding that some of the damage was “critical.” The company said sites in the Kharkov and Poltava regions came under attack by about 35 missiles – many of them ballistic – and some 60 drones, and claimed the strikes were “without military sense.” Moscow has said its forces do not target purely civilian infrastructure.

Kiev has emphasized long-range strikes on Russian oil refineries and other elements of energy infrastructure as a key element of its strategy and has pressed Western partners to support domestic production of drones and missiles.

Ukraine also intends to export some domestically produced weapons to help cover budget shortfalls. Kiev expects foreign backers to compensate for the remaining deficit.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned this week that Ukrainian attacks on sensitive infrastructure, including attempts to damage nuclear facilities, risk retaliation.

“This is a dangerous game,” he said at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi. “People on the other side must realize: if they play it, what would stop us from responding in kind against their working nuclear power plants? They should consider that.”

Lithuanian culture minister lasts a week over Crimea row

The peninsula and four other former Ukrainian regions voted to join Russia in referendums, but Kiev and EU insist they were “annexed”

Lithuania’s culture minister has resigned after just one week in office after abacklash triggered by his hesitation to say who Crimea belongs to.

Crimea and four other former Ukrainian regions overwhelmingly voted to join Russia in referendums. However, Ukraine and its Western backers – including Lithuania – continue to insist the regions were “annexed” by Moscow.

In an interview with news portal Lrytas on Thursday, Ignotas Adomavicius was asked who Crimea belongs to and initially refused to answer, calling the question political.

”These are provocative questions, so let’s not even go there, because we’re not even talking about the Culture Ministry here,” Adomavicius said, urging the interviewer to stick to cultural issues.

Later in the interview he clarified his stance in line with Vilnius’ official position by calling Crimea “occupied Ukrainian territory.”However, his initial hesitation proved politically costly.

The interview sparked a backlash from the ruling Social Democratic Party of Lithuania. President Gitanas Nauseda’s office issued a statement early on Fridaydescribing the minister's stance as “incomprehensible, unacceptable” and potentially disqualifying. Shortly after, Adomavicius announced his resignation.

Along with its Baltic neighbors Estonia and Latvia, Lithuania has adopted a more confrontational stance toward Moscow since the Ukraine conflict escalated in 2022. As one of Kiev's most vocal supporters, Vilnius has been at the forefront of demanding tougher sanctions on Moscow.

Ukrainian drones strike Russian school – official

At least three civilians were injured in the attack on Gorlovka on Friday

Ukraine has carried out a drone attack on the city of Gorlovka in Russia’s Donetsk People’sRepublic (DPR), injuring at least three people, according to local officials.

The Donbass city, which is located close to the front line, has been repeatedly shelled by Kiev’s forces.

According to Mayor Ivan Prikhodko, UAVs first struck on Friday afternoon, damaging energy infrastructure and vehicles.Later in the evening, drones hit a school and an apartment block.

DPR head Denis Pushilin said earlier that two teenagers in Gorlovka were injured by an explosive device in a separate incident.

According to Russia’s Foreign Ministry, 27civilians were killed and around 160 woundedin Ukrainian strikes across the country between 15 and 24 September.

Gorlovka had a Soviet-era population of over 330,000, but this had fallen to around 240,000 by 2021, the year before the escalation of the Ukraine conflict.

The city is best known as the subject of a brutal assault by Ukrainian forces attempting to crush the Donetsk People’s Republic(DNR) in July 2014.

Despite being repeatedly encircled by Kiev’s troops and subjected to heavy artillery and missile fire, the defenders repelled the attacks, holding their ground against superior numbers and equipment.

A major counter-offensive by DNR forces in late August 2014 ultimately relieved pressure, securing the city’s self-declared freedom. The casualties inflicted on the civilian population by Ukrainian shelling were widely presented as evidence of Kiev’s aggression against its own people.

congratulates Czech election frontrunner

The victory of Andrej Babis is a “big step” for the country and “good news” for the entire EU, the Hungarian leader has declared

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has congratulated his incoming Czech counterpart Andrej Babis on his election victory, lauding his win as “good news” for the whole of Europe.

Orban is the first foreign leader to acknowledge the victory of the agricultural tycoon, branded the ‘Czech Trump’ by local media, shortly after the preliminary results of the Czech general election were announced late on Saturday.

The ANO movement, a right-wing party led by Babis, came out on top, scoring about 35% of the parliamentary vote.

“Truth has prevailed!Andrej Babis has won the Czech parliamentary elections with a convincing lead. A big step for the Czech Republic, good news for Europe. Congratulations, Andrej!”Orban wrote on X, sharing his photo with the Czech politician.

The remarks echoed Babis’ victory speech, during which he yet again denied longstanding accusations of holding an anti-EU stance, claiming he actually wants to “save” the bloc. While Babis signaled his intention to form a one-party cabinet, ANO failed to achieve a majority, and coalition talks now lie ahead.

The likely coalition partners for the party are two minor political forces, namely the far-right anti-EU and anti-NATO SPD, and the Motorists party, which opposes Brussels’ environmental policies. The parties scored nearly 8% and 7% of the vote, respectively.

Babis has consistently criticized the EU’s handling of immigration and the environment, andstrongly opposed Ukraine’s aspirations to join the bloc.During his campaign, he pledged to end the so-called ‘Czech initiative’ project, set up to supply ammunition to Kiev, arguing the scheme is grossly overpriced.

He has also promised to cut aid for Ukraine and end austerity measures, increasing domestic spending instead.

(Finally Orban has an ally)

UK parliament cuts major opposition figure’s security detail

PM Keir Starmer will be held responsible should any harm befall Nigel Farage, a representative for Reform UK party has said

UK parliament cuts major opposition figure’s security detail

UK parliamentary authorities drastically slashed government-funded security for Nigel Farage, an MP and the leader of a major opposition right-wing party, Reform UK, its head of policy has claimed. ZiaYusuf accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer of deliberately putting his political rival at risk of attack.

Speaking to Times Radio on Wednesday, Yusuf stated that “two weeks ago, theauthorities cut Nigel’s security detail by 75 per cent,” without providing any reasons for the decision. The Reform UK representative added that “donors have stepped in [to]… make sure that Nigel is well protected.”

However, “if anything was to happen to Nigel, we will hold Keir Starmer squarely responsible,” Yusuf stressed.

Yusuf further accused the sitting prime minister of inciting violence against the “man who is the bookmaker’s favorite to be the next prime minister.”

Farage himself acknowledged he feared for his own security and that of other party members after Starmer’s latest attack.

Speaking during the Labour Party conference on Tuesday, the prime minister dubbed Farage a “snake oil merchant” who does not like Britain because of his “racist” plans to curb immigration. Starmer charged that Britain must “go into that battle armed, not just with words and condemnation, but with action,” describing Reform UK as the “enemy of national renewal” and the “biggest threat we face.”

On Thursday, The Telegraph reported that veteranConservative MP Sir David Davis had asked Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood to “review the decision at the earliest opportunity.”

“It strikes me that Mr Farage is a particularly high-profile target, arguably at greater risk than many Cabinet ministers,” the lawmaker reportedly wrote in a letter.

An Ipsos poll last month indicated thatStarmer’s popularity had hit a record low, with 79% of Britons disapproving of his performance.

Another survey by think tank More in Common suggested around the same time that Farage would become prime minister with 373 MPs if an election were held tomorrow. The Labour, in contrast, would suffer its worst electoral defeat since 1931, securing less than 100 seats in the House of Commons, according to the poll.

Bill Gates slams Sweden over increased military spending

The Scandinavian nation should instead be funneling funds into global humanitarian initiatives, the US billionaire has said

US billionaire Bill Gates has criticized Sweden for earmarking ever more money for the military, while slashing its financial commitment to international aid programs.

In an interview to Sweden’s Dagens Industri newspaper on Wednesday, Gates, who is known for his involvement in many philanthropic projects around the world, expressed regret that the Scandinavian country’s budget bill this year does not include allocations for the Global Fund – an organization that fights AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria worldwide.

Commenting on Stockholm’s growing military spending, Gates said that the issue “should be debated more.”

“Is this what people want to see, and is it really necessary?” he inquired.

Foreign Trade Minister Benjamin Dousa responded to Gates’ criticism by defending the country’s shift in priorities.

”If we don’t want our children to speak Russian in the future, we need to have a very strong defense,” he insisted, speaking to TT news agency.

Following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Sweden abandoned its centuries-long neutrality and applied for NATO membership, which it was granted two years later.

In July, state broadcaster SVT reported that the Swedish government intended to raise the maximum conscription age for former military officers from 47 to 70 as part of its push to double personnel to 115,000 by 2030.

Earlier this year, the country’s parliament also passed legislation pledging an additional 300 billion kronor ($31.4 billion) in spending on the armed forces, on top of annual budget increases.

At a summit in The Hague in June, NATO member states committed to increasing defense spending from the previous threshold of 2% to 5% of GDP by 2035.

The European Union, of which Sweden is also a member, has similarly approved several programs aimed at boosting military spending this year, including the €800 billion ReArm Europe initiative.

Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed claims that Moscow harbors aggressive plans toward Sweden.

Putin similarly described claims of imminent Russian aggression against EU member states as a “nonsense mantra,” calling the very idea “inconceivable.”

Brazilians avoid drinking after authorities confirm methanol poisoning cases, including 1 death

Authorities in Brazil have issued warnings about methanol poisoning linked to distilled beverages

By GABRIELA SÁ PESSOA and THIAGO MOSTAZO Associated Press

October 4, 2025, 11:45 AM ET

• 4 min read

SAO PAULO – SAO PAULO (AP) — Friday night was anything but typical at a bar near Paulista Avenue, one of Sao Paulo’s busiest areas and a popular destination for tourists. Nearly every table was ordering beer, wine or draft beer but no cocktails.

Edilson Trindade, the manager who has worked at the bar since 2018, told The Associated Press the establishment usually sells about 80 caipirinhas — Brazil’s national cocktail made with cachaça, lime, sugar and ice — each night. Last week, he didn’t sell a single one. No other cocktails were ordered, either.

“Clients have been worried, and we’re advising them it’s better not to drink cocktails,” Trindade said.

His concern reflects a nationwide unease over distilled beverages following a surge in methanol poisoning cases that has prompted police investigations, stoked public fear and altered drinking habits in recent days.

The Health Ministry said Friday it had confirmed 11 cases tied to alcoholic beverages and was investigating 102 suspected cases. One death was confirmed through lab tests in Sao Paulo, with eleven others under investigation.

Nearly all the cases have been reported in Sao Paulo, the country's most populous state and the epicenter of the outbreak.

Last week, local media reported deaths and hospitalizations linked to methanol-tainted alcohol. Some patients were admitted to intensive care with severe symptoms, including blindness.

One of them was the rapper Hungria, who has been hospitalized in Brasilia after possibly drinking altered alcohol. On Friday, he posted on his Instagram account that he was feeling better and would soon be discharged.

"Friday has a different energy. If you feel thirsty, find a safe place to have a drink," the singer said.

Panic followed poisoning

Health Minister Alexandre Padilha urged Brazilians to avoid drinking, especially distilled beverages, which are more difficult to verify for adulteration. He described the situation as abnormal and noted that Brazil recorded 20 methanol poisoning cases in August and September, equal to its annual average.

“As a physician and health minister, I advise everyone to avoid distilled products, especially colorless ones, unless you’re certain of their origin," Padilha said. "These are not essential items.”

Warnings from authorities and doctors caused panic among many Brazilians.

Some establishments told customers they would temporarily suspend sales of distilled spirits. Customers swapped cocktails, such as the traditional Brazilian caipirinha, for fermented drinks. Other bars have changed their menu and started offering cocktail mixes without distilled beverages.

Jessica Ávila, a 34-year-old cultural producer, was at the bar Trindade manages near Avenida Paulista Friday night, relaxing with friends but still feeling “very worried.”

“With all these cases that keep coming up and more deaths being reported each day, it’s alarming. I’ve even seen well-known people being hospitalized,” she said. “Right now, I can’t bring myself to drink any distilled spirits unless I have some assurance they’re not counterfeit. I’m sticking to beer.”

Counterfeit business

There are three main types of alcohol: ethanol, methanol, and isopropanol. Ethanol is safe for consumption and is found in spirits. Isopropanol is used in sanitizers and rubbing alcohol. Methanol, also known as wood alcohol, is used in fuel, antifreeze, and solvents.

Methanol poisoning can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, seizures, and even coma, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC advises immediate medical attention if poisoning is suspected.

Authorities have been inspecting bars and distributors suspected of selling contaminated products. “We have determined that methanol contaminated counterfeit alcoholic beverages. So we need to understand how,” Artur Dian, chief of Sao Paulo police, told the AP.

Police still do not know whether the product contamination was intentional or accidental. Individuals who counterfeit spirits typically mix them with other substances to increase volume and profit, which may include methanol, he said. Another possibility is that the bottles were contaminated with the toxic substance.

"While we know that small amounts do not contaminate and are not capable of causing health damage, we don’t know the exact amount that might remain in a bottle, Dian said.
