The NBA superstar opened up on Monday about how he believes that racial tension has become an even more prominent issue of late because of Trump and his actions.

James spoke at lengths about the President, race and politics in a wide-ranging interview with CNN's Don Lemon, which aired just hours after opening his new I Promise School in Akron, Ohio.

The 33-year-old was talking about how both athletics and education were high priorities for the young students at his new school when he mentioned the current climate in the US.

'When you're part of sports, it brings so much comradery and so much fun. We are in a position right now, in America more importantly, where this whole race thing has taken over,' he said.

All nine of the film franchise's stars signed an open letter on Monday, 10 days after his firing, all but calling for the two-time director to return.

At the same time, more than 300,000 fans signed a petition demanding he be brought back for the series' third film, due to be released in 2020.

Gunn was fired on July 20 after tweets from almost a decade ago where he joked about rape and pedophilia resurfaced.

Hollywood rumor mills believe there is a 'growing feeling' Disney may cave in to this pressure as it appeared in no rush to replace him despite pressing deadlines.

Both Marvel and Disney have been unusually quiet about who would replace Gunn on the project, fueling speculation they might bring him back.

Production was scheduled to start early next year and as Gunn was also the film's writer the new director would likely need to revamp the script.

However, the studio could simply be taking its time to find the right replacement after widely being viewed as firing him in haste.
