Democratic nominee for Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones has apologized for text messages sent in August 2022, in which he made violent, joking remarks about former Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert. Jones stated that reading the messages made him "sick to my stomach" and expressed deep regret, taking full responsibility for his words.

Jones's Apology: On October 3, 2025, Jones issued a public statement apologizing, saying the words were "disgusting and unbecoming of any public official" and that he was "embarrassed, ashamed and sorry".
He confirmed he had reached out to Gilbert and his family to apologize directly.
Political Fallout: The incident has sparked significant backlash. Republican candidates, including Governor Glenn Youngkin and Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, have called the comments "beyond disqualifying" and demanded Jones drop out of the race.
The Republican Attorneys General Association also called for Jones to withdraw immediately.
Democratic candidates Abigail Spanberger and Ghazala Hashmi have condemned the language, though Spanberger has also faced criticism for past rhetoric.
Jones has attempted to deflect blame, accusing his Republican opponent Jason Miyares and "Trump-controlled media" of using the texts to smear his character.
