Killing the red heifer was a senseless ritual, no Messiah ever came, and they were told that. The building of the 3rd temple is also a ritual and had no bearing on outcomes because the meanings weren't supposed to be taken literal but figuratively. If they understood what the temple meant, they would realize that the 3rd temple was built in the beginning of time, and they should be working on building the current temple that needs to be built: The Spiritual Man who works for God's Kingdom come.
