Francis Galton
Sir Francis Galton (1822–1911) was an English polymath known for his pioneering work in statistics, psychology, meteorology, and eugenics. A cousin of Charles Darwin, Galton was deeply influenced by Darwin’s theory of evolution and applied statistical methods to the study of human heredity and intelligence.
He is credited with founding eugenics, coining the term in 1883, and advocating for selective breeding to improve human traits. His 1869 book Hereditary Genius was the first attempt to study genius through genealogical analysis. Galton also introduced key statistical concepts such as regression toward the mean and correlation, and he popularized the phrase "nature versus nurture."
In meteorology, he created the first weather map and identified the concept of the anticyclone. In forensic science, he developed an early fingerprint classification system still in use today. He also invented the Galton whistle to test hearing and established one of the first experimental psychology labs.
While celebrated for his scientific innovations, Galton’s legacy is controversial due to his promotion of eugenics, which later informed discriminatory policies.
