Trump Vows Military Will Be Paid; IRS Furloughs Half Of Staff As Shutdown Enters Day 9

With day nine of the federal government shutdown upon us and no end in sight after the Senate rejected both Republican and Democratic plans to reopen (their 6th failed vote), President Donald Trump doubled down on threats to block some furloughed federal workers from receiving back pay once the shutdown is over - but insisted that members of the military don't have to worry about missing their next paychecks - signaling support for standalone legislation to ensure they're paid.

Republican Rep. Ken Calvert - who's in charge of defense funding, has also thrown his weight behind the bill, which was introduced by Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA) in mid-September, and has been gaining steam since the shutdown began Oct. 1.

House Democratic leadership supports the standalone bill to ensure military troop payments.

In a Thursday morning C-SPAN interview, meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) took several calls from unhappy Americans - one of whom was a military wife from Virginia, who pleaded with him to reopen the government or pass funding so her family doesn't miss a paycheck on Oct 15.

"As a Republican, I'm very disappointed in my party, and I'm very disappointed in you, because you have the power to call the House back," she said. "You refuse to do that, just for a show."

Johnson replied that situations like hers keep him up at night (lol sure), and that the House already tried to vote to pay the troops when it passed a short-term government funding extension that the Senate refuses to pass.

"The Democrats are the ones that are preventing you from getting a check," Johnson said.

Meanwhile, the IRS on Wednesday announced that it would furlough some 34,000 employees - nearly half the agency's staff, adding to the approximately 750,000 furloughed workers government-wide.

Payday Looms

On Friday, federal employees should expect smaller paychecks, which covers work between Sept. 21 and Oct. 4, so they'll only be paid for work between Sept. 21 and Oct. 1.

Under the 2019 Government Employee Fair Treatment Act, federal workers should receive retroactive pay after the shutdown - however a leaked internal memo revealed that the Trump administration interpreted the Act to place the responsibility on Congress to authorize payments.

North Carolina Rep. Cecil Brockman accused of statutory rape with 15-year-old victim, warrants allege; ‘Must resign immediately’

A North Carolina State House of Representatives member who represents Guilford County has been arrested and charged with multiple sex crimes.

According to court records, Cecil Antonio Brockman, 41, a Democrat who serves District 60 in Guilford County, was arrested on Wednesday for two counts of indecent liberties with a child and two counts of statutory rape of someone 13-15.

Brockman’s legislative assistant has been reached for comment.

Warrants allege that in August of this year, Brockman “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did commit and attempt to commit lewd and lascivious act” with a 15-year-old victim.

“The allegations against Rep. Brockman are serious and, if true, would disqualify him from public office,” House Democratic Leader Robert Reives said in a provided statement early Thursday.

Later in the day, just before noon, Reives provided an updated statement: “As we continue to learn more about the allegations against Rep. Brockman this morning, it has become clear that he is unable to continue serving in the House of Representatives. Rep. Brockman must resign immediately.”

Trump says hostages to be freed Monday or Tuesday

US President Donald Trump, asked what guarantees the US has provided in negotiations to ensure that Hamas disarms and that Israel doesn’t resume the war, says that the first priority was securing the release of the hostages.

“That’s what people wanted more than anything else… After that, we’ll see,” Trump tells reporters during a cabinet meeting at the White House, highlighting that a lot remains left to be negotiated.

“But they’ve agreed to things, and I think it’s going to move along pretty well,” he adds.

Trump declines to get into specifics regarding the second phase of the agreement, after the hostages are released, but says Hamas will disarm and the IDF will pull back its troops. He highlights his “22 different things that will take place,” apparently referring to his 20-point plan for ending the Gaza war.

“I think it will take place, and I think you can end up with peace in the Middle East,” Trump says.

He acknowledges that the roughly 28 bodies of dead hostages held in Gaza will be “a little bit hard to find.”

“But we have the hostages for the most part, and I don’t think it’s going to be an overly big situation with the bodies… We’re going to do the best we can,” Trump says.

Trump quips that while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may have been unpopular in Israel before this Gaza deal was reached, that is no longer the case. He reiterates that he is open to speaking at the Knesset, while indicating that no such address has been finalized, even though Netanyahu extended an invitation and Israel’s government is preparing for a visit.

Pressed on his view regarding a two-state solution, Trump responds, “I don’t have a view. I’m going to go with what they agree to.”

However, the 20-point plan for ending the Gaza war that he presented last week creates a pathway for the potential creation of a Palestinian state.

Asked whether Palestinians will be allowed to remain in Gaza — which his plan explicitly encourages — Trump says the US will work to make the Strip more livable with the help of wealthy Arab and Muslim states.

Hope Christian teacher now accused of exchanging money for sex

The Hope Christian School teacher accused of sexually abusing students is now facing 11 charges for allegedly exchanging money for sex.

Kelly McEachran is accused of exchanging money for sex 11 times in the span of six months – on Oct. 21, 26 and 28; Dec. 23; Jan. 4; Feb. 28, March 3, 20, 21, and 24; and April 3, according to a court document detailing the charges.

Each count of exchanging money for sex carries a punishment of six months in jail and no more than a $500 fine, if convicted.

McEachran already faced 10 charges for rape and child sex abuse. U.S. Marshals tracked him down to Idaho in June and arrested him.

Following his arrest, former students called the Albuquerque Police Department. They claimed they had also been victimized or had strange encounters with McEachran.

According to APD, an 11-year-old girl told her parents McEachran inappropriately touched her several times in the classroom. Other alleged victims also came forward.

McEachran’s legal team tried to appeal an order keeping him in jail but the court denied the appeal. He is still in jail.

Confronting footage has captured a university staffer launching into an anti-Semitic tirade against Jewish students at a prestigious Sydney university.

A staffer has been suspended and police are making inquiries after shocking footage emerged of Jewish students being verbally abused on the grounds of one of Sydney’s biggest universities.

In the video – obtained exclusively by Sky News Australia – a woman can be heard asking several students at the University of Sydney if they were “Zionists”, before raising her voice as the group urges her to move on.

The outlet reports the students were celebrating the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, which runs until next Monday.

“A Zionist is the lowest form of rubbish … Zionists are the most disgusting thing that has ever walked this earth,” the woman says in the clip.

She goes on to claim she is an “Indigenous Palestinian”, ranting about the group being “child killers” and calling one member a “f**king filthy Zionist”.

A security guard can be seen trying to separate the pair.

“Look at this rubbish, look at these parasites,” the same woman is heard saying.

In a statement, the university said they were “disturbed and appalled” by the video.

“Such conduct is utterly unacceptable, and we are taking immediate action under our codes of conduct,” a University of Sydney spokesperson said, confirming a staff member had been suspended “pending further assessment”.

“Where our codes are breached, we will not hesitate to take disciplinary action and other steps to ensure a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for all,” the spokesperson continued.

“Hate speech, antisemitism and verbal harassment have no place on campus, online or in our wider community.

“We deeply apologise to any staff, students or visitors who are distressed or impacted by this incident in anyway.”

In a statement, NSW Police confirmed they were aware of the video.

In the video, the woman asserts the student “came to her” and she did not start the argument – despite clearly being seen approaching the group first.

The group repeatedly urge the woman to leave and walk away.

Another guard moves the woman on before she storms off and says: “Go f**k yourself you disgusting Zionist. A Zionist is the lowest form of humanity.”

The @USTreasury has concluded 4 days of intensive meetings with Minister @LuisCaputoAR and his team in DC. We discussed Argentina’s strong economic fundamentals, including structural changes already underway that will generate significant dollar-denominated exports and foreign exchange reserves.

Argentina faces a moment of acute illiquidity. The international community – including @IMFNews – is unified behind Argentina and its prudent fiscal strategy, but only the United States can act swiftly. And act we will.

To that end, today we directly purchased Argentine pesos.

Additionally, we have finalized a $20 billion currency swap framework with Argentina’s central bank. The U.S. Treasury is prepared, immediately, to take whatever exceptional measures are warranted to provide stability to markets.

I emphasized to Minister Caputo that @POTUS @realDonaldTrump’s America First economic leadership is committed to strengthening our allies who welcome fair trade and American investment.

I continue to hear from American business leaders who, thanks to President Milei’s leadership, are eager to tie the American and Argentine economies more closely together. The Trump administration is resolute in our support for allies of the United States, and to that end we also discussed Argentina’s investment incentives, and U.S. tools to powerfully support investment in our strategic partners.

Minister Caputo informed me of his close coordination with the IMF on Argentina’s commitments under its program. Argentina’s policies, when anchored on fiscal discipline, are sound. Its exchange rate band remains fit for purpose.

We reviewed the broad political consensus in Argentina for the second half of President @JMilei’s term. I was encouraged by their focus on achieving fiscally sound economic freedom for the people of Argentina via lower taxes, higher investment, private sector job creation, and partnering with allies. As Argentina lifts the dead weight of the state and stops spending into inflation, great things are possible.

The success of Argentina’s reform agenda is of systemic importance, and a strong, stable Argentina which helps anchor a prosperous Western Hemisphere is in the strategic interest of the United States. Their success should be a bipartisan priority.

I look forward to the meeting between President Trump and President Milei on October 14, and to seeing Minister Caputo again on the margins of the IMF Annual Meetings.

In kneejerk response, Argentine dollar bonds extended earlier gains on Thursday, with notes rising more than 4 cents across the curve. Sovereign bonds due in 2035 rose gained 4.3 cents on the dollar to trade above 60 cents, the highest levels in two weeks.

Behind the massive show of support that included the placement of a million and a half Israeli flags across the United States stood not the Jewish-American community, but rather the Christian one.

Daniel Edelson visited one of the 1,300 churches that participated in the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews’ annual event and met the people who insist on standing with Israel while the world turns against it. “You can be cynical or keep saying that we can rely only on ourselves,” says Yael Eckstein, president of the Fellowship. “But the only way to fight antisemitism is together.”

The first thing Ilan Isaacson, saw upon landing at Nashville Airport, aside from the local honky-tonk band greeting arriving passengers, was a bodyguard. The security chief of the Eshkol Regional Council, a survivor of the October 7 massacre who was sent by the Fellowship to tell his story at a southern U.S. church, hadn’t imagined he would need close protection there. “Poor guy,” Isaacson says with a half-smile, “he lost track of me for half an hour and panicked.”

They drive south, far from the Sodom and Gomorrah of Nashville’s Broadway, deep into the heart of America’s “Bible Belt”, or as locals call it, its buckle. As the scenery opens, the cheerful capital of country music gives way to a land of faith. Billboards quoting Bible verses mix with commercial ads and then, suddenly, blue and white. Hundreds of Israeli flags line the roadside. To be exact: 1,200 — nearly the number of victims of the October 7 massacre.

Knowink is headquartered in St. Louis and was founded by Scott Leiendecker.
