Top Hamas official announces end to Gaza war

The organization has received “guarantees” from the US that the hostilities will not continue, Khalil al-Hayya has said

The Gaza war is over, a senior Hamas official, Khalil al-Hayya, has said, adding that the peace plan put forth by US President Donald Trump would mark the start of a “permanent ceasefire.”

The militant group received some “guarantees” from Washington and other mediators that the hostilities would not continue, he told Gaza residents in a televised address on Thursday.

According to al-Hayya, the Gaza-based Palestinian militant group “dealt responsibly with the American president’s plan” and submitted a response aimed at preventing further bloodshed. He did not elaborate on the nature of the response but said that the deal, which was reached in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, includes providing the Palestinian enclave with humanitarian aid, opening the Rafah border crossing, and exchanging prisoners.

“Everyone confirmed that the war has completely ended,” the official said, vowing to work with all national and Islamic forces to complete the next steps envisioned by the agreement.

His words came as the Israeli cabinet was still voting on the ratification of the agreement. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said ahead of the vote that he and his party would oppose Trump’s peace plan and would leave the government if Hamas is allowed to retain control over Gaza. He also described the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Israeli hostages as an “unbearable price” to pay for the agreement.

Earlier media reports suggested that Israeli forces would be required to withdraw to a pre-set line within 24 hours, leaving Israel in control of around 53% of the Palestinian enclave. Hamas would release all living hostages within 72 hours of West Jerusalem ratifying the deal. In return, Israel would free 250 Palestinians serving life sentences and 1,700 Gazans detained since 2023, including all women and minors.

According to Israeli Channel 12, West Jerusalem would only allow the prisoners to go free after the 72-hour period, during which Hamas is expected to release all Israeli hostages. The group still holds around 48 hostages; Israel believes that around 20 are still alive.

The Israel-Hamas war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led fighters attacked the Jewish state, killing around 1,200 people, and taking around 250 hostages. Israel’s subsequent military operation in Gaza has killed more than 67,000 Palestinians, according to local officials. It also led to unprecedented destruction and a humanitarian disaster in the enclave.

Don't mind the MSM negative spin!

FBI fires special agents who worked on Jack Smith's probe into Trump

The agents were fired after Kash Patel disclosed that Smith's team obtained phone records of members of Congress, which the Smith report itself referred to.

The FBI took personnel action against three special agents who worked in connection with former special counsel Jack Smith’s probe of Donald Trump, firing at least two, three people familiar with the matter told NBC News.

All three agents were previously named in documents released by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, about “Arctic Frost,” an FBI probe that was the precursor to the Smith investigation, which resulted in two federal criminal cases against Trump: one for his handling of classified documents and the other involving his attempts to overturn his 2020 election loss, which ended in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

One of the fired FBI employees, a combat veteran who was months away from becoming eligible for retirement, was called back to the office after having left for the day and informed of the dismissal, a person familiar with the matter told NBC News. The other dismissed agent was also called back to the office after having left for the day, the person said.

Lavrov explains root cause of extremism in Middle East

Moscow has long maintained that establishing a Palestinian state is the only way to achieve lasting peace in the region

The unresolved issue of Palestinian statehood is the “main factor fueling extremism” in the Middle East, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

In an interview with RT on Thursday, Lavrov welcomed US President Donald Trump’s peace plan aimed at ending the Gaza war. Earlier that day, Israel and the militant group Hamas agreed to begin implementing the plan’s initial steps toward a potential ceasefire.

“We have repeatedly made it clear to Israel that the unresolved Palestinian issue, lingering for nearly 80 years, remains the main factor fueling extremism in the Middle East,” Lavrov said.

He added that generations of Palestinian children grow up believing they should have their own state – a goal backed by a UN resolution – yet, as he noted, “Israel was created, whereas Palestine was not.”

True, extremism is being fuelled there… When generation after generation grows up in a society where their legitimate UN-approved aspirations are ignored, such sentiments can hardly be contained.

Lavrov added that Moscow has “strongly condemned the terrorist attack” carried out by the militant group on October 7, 2023, in which around 1,200 Israelis were killed and more than 250 taken hostage.

However, Israel’s “collective punishment of the Palestinian people” also constitutes “a gross violation of international humanitarian law,” he added. According to local health authorities, The Israeli blockade and ongoing military operation in the enclave have so far claimed the lives of more than 67,000 Palestinians.

Lavrov noted that despite Trump’s peace plan having “rather vague” phrasing regarding Palestinian statehood, it remained “the best solution currently on the table.”

Moscow recognized Palestinian statehood in 1988, shortly after the Palestinian Declaration of Independence.

Treasury blocked release of China spying files

Report on threat posed by Beijing was suppressed amid concerns it would scupper trade opportunities

Jonathan Powell suppressed a major Whitehall investigation into Chinese spying after lobbying from the Treasury,

Sir Keir is facing calls to come clean over the extent of China’s grip on Britain. Earlier this week, the UK’s top prosecutor said a case against two alleged spies collapsed because the Government had failed to brand the country a threat to national security.

The Telegraph can now reveal that details gathered in the China audit, a cross-Whitehall analysis of Britain’s relationship with Beijing, were deliberately kept private amid concerns about reprisals from China.

Dame Priti Patel, the shadow foreign secretary, said: “This is yet another example of cover-up and collusion within the Labour Government when it comes to foreign policy and China. Labour clearly cannot be trusted when it comes to national security.”

On a trip to India on Thursday, the Prime Minister said no ministers had been involved in the decision to drop the trial of the alleged spies Christopher Cash and Christopher Berry last month.

Sir Keir did not deny that Mr Powell was involved, despite Downing Street previously insisting that he was not responsible for decisions about evidence in the case.

NATO Allies Discuss Letting Pilots Open Fire on Russian Aircraft: Report

NATO allies are discussing easing rules for pilots to permit them to shoot down Russian aircraft, according to a report by the Financial Times. The news comes as alliance members consider a tougher approach against Moscow following a spate of alleged airspace violations, drone swarms, and sabotage plots in Europe.

A NATO official told Newsweek: "When it comes to the range of hybrid or grey-zone activities we’ve seen, including cyber-attacks, drone incursions, or attempts to sabotage critical infrastructure, NATO is working closely with Allies to ensure that we’re taking appropriate steps to ensure we can deter and defend. This isn’t new, and we continue to adapt as the situation evolves."

Why It Matters

NATO-Russia tensions are worsening as the war in Ukraine rages on and there is an increasing risk of a direct conflict between Russia and NATO.

Both sides have characterized the current situation as a form of war with each other, though there has been no such formal declaration by either Russia or NATO.

The FT, citing four unidentified NATO officials, said NATO allies are discussing a more forceful response to increasingly provocative Russian actions, including easing restrictions on pilots to allow them to open fire on Russian aircraft and deploying armed drones along the border with Russia. The asymmetric cost of scrambling fighter jets to intercept drones is a running concern for the alliance, which is seeking a financially sustainable solution.

NATO members on the front line with Russia, backed by France and Britain, initiated the discussions, which have since broadened to a larger group in the 32-strong alliance, the newspaper reported.

"One example of our work in this area is Baltic Sentry, which was launched in response to incidents affecting critical undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea," the NATO official told Newsweek in a statement.
