Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has called for a re-examination of Australia’s history in a new book that insists the nation has broken with its convict past to become one of the “freest, fairest and most prosperous countries on earth.”
While not “oblivious to our mistakes and imperfections as a nation”, he argues in his new book, Australia: A History, that to be Australian is to have won the lottery of life.
Insisting that early governors tried to respect the original inhabitants, Mr Abbott argues that it is the combination of Australia’s First Nations’ heritage, a British foundation and immigrant character that have shaped the land of the ‘fair go’ and a pioneer for democratic freedoms, including voting rights for women.
