Gitmo's Most Secret Place: Camp 7
The most secretive detention area at Guantanamo Bay, commonly referred to as Camp 7, is a highly classified facility designed to hold high-value detainees previously subjected to CIA interrogation. Unlike other camps, Camp 7 is off-limits to the media and its exact location and operational costs remain classified.
Camp 7 houses individuals such as Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and four others accused of orchestrating the September 11, 2001 attacks. Initially, these detainees were kept in prolonged isolation with harsh conditions, including sensory deprivation and restrictive movement. However, in recent years, conditions have eased somewhat, allowing limited group activities, communal meals, and even recreational items like a makeshift Ping-Pong table.
Access to the site is tightly controlled—lawyers with court orders are transported there in windowless vans, underscoring its status as the most clandestine part of the Guantanamo detention system.
