Pakistan uses China's soil to launch the country's first Hyperspectral Satellite HS-1 into space

October 19, 2025, 14:04:12 IST

Pakistan launched its first Hyperspectral Satellite HS-1 from China’s Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre (JSLC) on Sunday.

The launch was telecast live from Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission’s (Suparco) Karachi complex, the Pakistani space agency said.

The agency maintained that the preparations for the launch were completed in the “presence of Pakistani scientists and engineers.”

A Suparco spokesperson told Geo News that the hyperspectral satellite has successfully entered its orbit.

The spokesperson maintained that it may take up to two months to complete the satellite’s in-orbit testing. After two months, HS-1 will become fully operational, the spokesperson added.

In the orbit, the HS-1 will conduct a detailed analysis of land, vegetation, water and urban areas.

According to Suparco, the advanced satellite is capable of capturing precise images across hundreds of spectral bands and is expected to revolutionise agricultural planning and environmental monitoring.

The satellite is expected to assist in monitoring deforestation, pollution and glacier melting, and help identify geological risks in CPEC projects.

Suparco maintained that the mission was a major milestone in Pakistan’s National Space Policy and Vision 2047.

The Pakistani Foreign Office also released a statement on the matter.

It said that the launch of HS-1 from the Chinese Satellite Launch Centre is a major milestone and highlights long-standing Pakistan–China collaboration in the peaceful exploration of space.

The foreign office noted that the satellite would also contribute to the development initiatives, including CPEC, by identifying geo-hazard risks and supporting sustainable infrastructure development that is needed for the project.

It is pertinent to note that this is Pakistan’s third satellite launched into space this year. The earlier EO-1 and KS-1 missions were successfully launched and are fully operational in orbit.

The Suparco spokesperson said that the mission “aligns with the National Space Policy and Suparco’s Vision 2047, which seeks to position Pakistan among leading space nations and drive sustainable national development through science and innovation.”

Watch comets Lemmon and SWAN make their closest approach to Earth live online on Oct. 20

October 19, 2025

Two comets, C/2025 A4 (Lemmon) and C/2025 R2 (SWAN), are about to reach their closest approach to Earth and you can watch the action unfold live online.

Astronomer Gianluca Masi and his Virtual Telescope Project will host a special livestream on Oct. 20 beginning at 1:30 p.m. EDT (1730 GMT) to watch as both comets make a close pass to Earth, making them well placed for observations.

"So far, living in the Northern hemisphere, I could admire C/2025 A6 Lemmon only, but C/2025 R2 SWAN is quickly joining the show and we are ready to amaze every astronomy lover with our live feed!" Masi told Space.com in an email.

You can watch the cosmic show live here on Space.com courtesy of the Virtual Telescope Project or on the project's website or YouTube channel, weather permitting.

Rare double-comet encounter

Having two right comets visible in the sky around the same time is a rare cosmic treat.

During the event, Comet Lemmon (C/2025 A6) will pass about 56 million miles (90 million kilometers) from Earth, while Comet Swan (C/2025 R2) will soar even closer, at roughly 24 million miles (39 million km).

Both are expected to peak in brightness between Oct. 20 and Oct. 21.

Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) was discovered in January 2025 and has been steadily brightening as it soars through the inner solar system.

Lemmon is visible in a pair of binoculars or small telescopes in the western evening sky after sunset, slowly climbing higher each night as it moves northward.

Comet C/2025 R2 (SWAN) was discovered in September 2025 by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory's SWAN instrument.

It is best viewed in the predawn sky, when the comet appears low on the eastern horizon as it continues its journey away from the sun.

Watch SpaceX launch its 10,000th Starlink satellite to orbit today on rocket's record-breaking 31st flight

October 19, 2025

SpaceX will notch two big milestones on a single Falcon 9 launch today (Oct. 19), and you can watch the action live.

A Falcon 9 is scheduled to launch 28 of SpaceX's Starlink broadband satellites from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station today, during a four-hour window that opens at 10:52 a.m. EDT (1452 GMT).

SpaceX has lofted 9,988 Starlink satellites to date, according to astrophysicist and satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell.

So today's launch will take that number above 10,000. It will also be the record-breaking 31st liftoff for this Falcon 9's first stage, a booster designated 1067.

You can see history made live: SpaceX will stream the flight via its website and its X account, beginning about five minutes before launch.

SpaceX launched its first two Starlink prototypes to low Earth orbit (LEO) in February 2018, then began building the megaconstellation in earnest 15 months later.

The company offered Starlink service for the first time with a public beta test in October 2020 and started a commercial rollout the next year.

Starlink now provides service to millions of customers around the world, and SpaceX continues to beef up that product by sending more and more satellites to the final frontier.

The pace has reached extraordinary levels lately: SpaceX launched 89 Starlink missions in 2024 and has already exceeded that number this year.

And don't expect it to stop anytime soon: SpaceX already has permission to loft 12,000 Starlink satellites, and the megaconstellation could eventually consist of more than 30,000 spacecraft.

Most of the 9,988 Starlink satellites that SpaceX has launched to date remain active — 8,610 are currently operational, according to McDowell.

Most of the others have been deorbited, guided down to burn up in Earth's atmosphere. (Each Starlink satellite has an operational life of about five years.)

If all goes according to plan today, Booster 1067 will come back to Earth about 8.5 minutes after liftoff, landing in the Atlantic Ocean on the SpaceX drone ship "A Shortfall of Gravitas."

It will be the 31st launch and touchdown for the booster, according to a SpaceX mission description.

Such extensive rocket reuse is a core part of SpaceX's plan to lower the cost of spaceflight and increase its efficiency.

That already-successful strategy could take a big leap forward soon; the company is developing a giant, fully reusable rocket called Starship, which is designed to help humanity settle Mars.

(The Falcon 9 and its close cousin the Falcon Heavy are only partially reusable; their upper stages are expendable.)

The Falcon 9's upper stage, meanwhile, will haul the 28 Starlink satellites to LEO today, deploying them about 64 minutes after launch.

The Imminent Solar Conjunction of 3I/ATLAS

October 19, 2025

On October 21, 2025, the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS will be exactly on the opposite side of the Sun relative to Earth, constituting a so-called `solar-conjunction’.

When you look up towards the sky that day, keep in mind that 3I/ATLAS is hiding behind the Sun. Under these circumstances, it is impossible to observe 3I/ATLAS with Earth-based telescopes even shortly after sunset.

Was this hideout planned as an opportune time for technological action?

In astronautics, the optimal point for a maneuver to speed up or slow-down a spacecraft is at closest approach to a massive object. An impulse in the direction of the peak velocity or opposite to it, would maximize the gain or loss of kinetic energy.

As a result of this so-called Oberth effect, it is most energy-efficient for a spacecraft engine to burn its fuel when its orbital velocity is greatest.

The velocity impulse from gas escaping the exhaust is analogous to the so-called Hills mechanism for the production of hypervelocity stars out of the tidal breakup of a binary star system by a supermassive black hole (theoretically predicted here and observationally confirmed here).

If 3I/ATLAS is a massive mothership, it will likely continue along its original gravitational path and ultimately exit the Solar system. In that case, the Oberth maneuver might apply to the mini-probes it releases at perihelion towards Solar system planets.

When will 3I/ATLAS reach the optimal time for these Oberth maneuvers? Only 8 days after it reaches solar conjunction. On October 29, 2025, 3I/ATLAS will reach a perihelion distance of 203 million kilometers.

This opportune time happens to be during the same period when it is hidden from view to Earth-based telescopes. Was this a mere coincidence or a result of orbital design and basic astronautics?

Science is guided by evidence and not by expectations. We can find the answer to the above question by monitoring the sky during November and December 2025, and searching for any unusual activity of 3I/ATLAS or any new objects that came out of it.

Over a period of months after perihelion, the tidal force from the Sun would separate the trajectories of objects that were thrusted out of 3I/ATLAS with velocity kicks.

Given the minimum diameter of 5 kilometers for 3I/ATLAS (as derived here), the solar illumination at perihelion would deliver more than 33 gigawatts of power to its surface, namely at least a third of the total power generated by 94 operating commercial nuclear reactors in the U.S. — the largest producer of nuclear power in the world.

As of now, 3I/ATLAS appears most likely to be a natural comet. But the remote possibility of an Oberth maneuver must be considered seriously as a black swan event with a small probability, because of its huge implications for humanity.

Since its discovery on July 1, 2025, 3I/ATLAS was ranked 4 on the Loeb scale (quantified here and here) because of 8 anomalies:

  1. The trajectory of 3I/ATLAS is aligned to within 5 degrees with the ecliptic plane of the planets around the Sun (see here).

  2. 3I/ATLAS showed a sunward jet (anti-tail) that is not an optical illusion from geometric perspective, unlike familiar comets (see here).

  3. 3I/ATLAS is about a million times more massive than 1I/`Oumuamua and a thousand times more massive than 2I/Borisov, while moving faster than both (see here and here).

  4. The arrival time of 3I/ATLAS allows it to pass within tens of millions of kilometers from Mars, Venus and Jupiter (see here).

  5. The gas plume around 3I/ATLAS contains much more nickel than iron (as found in industrially-produced nickel alloys) and a nickel to cyanide ratio that is orders of magnitude larger than all known comets, including 2I/Borisov (see here).

  6. The gas plume of 3I/ATLAS contains only 4% water by mass, a primary constituent of familiar comets (see here).

  7. 3I/ATLAS showed extreme negative polarization, unprecedented for all known comets, including 2I/Borisov (see here).

  8. 3I/ATLAS arrived from a direction coincident with the radio “Wow! Signal” to within 9 degrees (see here).

Gladly, we expect to get data on 3I/ATLAS shortly after perihelion. On November, 4, 2025, ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) will pass within 64 million kilometers from 3I/ATLAS.

If 3I/ATLAS will maintain a trajectory shaped by gravity only, it will get closest to Earth on December 19, 2025 at a distance of 269 million kilometers.

On March 16, 2026, 3I/ATLAS will pass within 54 million kilometers from Jupiter and be observable to sensors in the UV, infrared and radio bands, onboard the Juno spacecraft (as recommended scientifically here and politically here).

Here’s hoping that the coming months will bring sufficient information to determine the true nature of 3I/ATLAS.

In a blind date of interstellar proportions, we better observe the other side as much as possible before having an opinion or raising expectations for an engagement.

Trump releases footage of US Navy destroying ‘very large’ sub

18 Oct, 2025 21:23

US President Donald Trump has shared a video of the US Navy striking what he called a submarine in the Caribbean that was allegedly smuggling a large amount of illicit drugs.

Trump released the unclassified footage of the strike on his Truth Social feed on Saturday, shortly after the destruction of the vessel was announced.

The US president described the vessel as a “very large DRUG-CARRYING SUBMARINE,” which was “loaded up with mostly fentanyl and other illegal narcotics.”

Footage released by Trump shows the vessel, which was travelling deck awash – meaning the deck is level with or just covered by the surface of the water – sustaining at least two hits.

After the strike, the submarine apparently lost power and began to sink.

“There were four known narcoterrorists on board the vessel. Two of the terrorists were killed. At least 25,000 Americans would die if I allowed this submarine to come ashore.

The two surviving terrorists are being returned to their Countries of origin, Ecuador and Colombia, for detention and prosecution,” Trump wrote.

The US military has struck at least five surface vessels since September, claiming the boats were being used for drug smuggling by cartels allegedly based in Venezuela.

The destruction of the submarine, however, was the first incident in which survivors were captured.

Washington has repeatedly accused Venezuela of aiding “narcoterrorists” and has put sweeping sanctions on the country.

It also recently raised the bounty for information leading to the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro to $50 million.

Trump confirmed earlier that he had authorized covert CIA operations on Venezuelan soil but declined to say whether the ultimate goal was to topple or outright eliminate the country’s left-wing leader.

Maduro has repeatedly denied having any ties to cartels, accusing Washington of seeking to topple him.

The Venezuelan government has vowed to repel any invasion, putting its troops on high alert in the wake of the ongoing US military activities in the eastern Caribbean.

UK wants Gaza-style peace plan for Ukraine – Axios

18 Oct, 2025 15:39

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged European leaders to hatch a peace plan for Ukraine “along the lines” of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza scheme, Axios has reported, citing sources.

Starmer made the remarks during a phone call with Vladimir Zelensky and a handful of EU leaders held following the Ukrainian leader’s meeting with Trump in Washington on Friday.

European leaders should work with the US “to draft peace for Ukraine along the lines” of Trump’s 20-point plan for Gaza, Starmer reportedly said during the conversation.

Trump hosted Zelensky at the White House earlier that day after having spoken by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin the previous day.

The meeting with Zelensky turned out to be “tense,” with the Ukrainian leader failing to secure deliveries of long-range Tomahawk missiles, according to Axios.

The discussion “got a bit emotional,” the outlet noted. One of the outlet’s sources described the conversation as “not easy” and another one called it outright “bad.”

The meeting ended abruptly when Trump reportedly said, “I think we’re done. Let’s see what happens next week,” apparently referring to upcoming Russia-US talks, which are expected to be hosted by Hungary.

The US president has repeatedly expressed his frustration over the lack of progress in his efforts to mediate peace between Russia and Ukraine, admitting he had thought the years-long conflict would be the easiest one to settle.

Following the latest conversations with Putin and Zelensky, Trump said in a post on Truth Social that he had urged both to “stop the killing and make a DEAL!”

After the meeting with Trump, Zelensky signaled his desire for an unconditional ceasefire along the current front lines. Moscow has repeatedly said it seeks a lasting settlement to end the conflict rather than a temporary pause.

For a ceasefire to work, Russia has stated that Kiev must withdraw from the parts of the formerly Ukrainian regions belonging to Russia that it still controls, while Western military aid to Ukraine must stop. Moscow also demands that Ukraine recognize its new borders and abandon its NATO aspirations for good.

Ukrainian drones ignite one of Russia’s largest gas plants 1,200+ km from front lines — Orenburg facility burns overnight

19/10/2025

Overnight on 19 October 2025, Ukrainian drones struck deep into Russian territory, igniting a major fire at the Orenburg Gas Processing Plant, a critical facility owned by Gazprom.

The Ukrainian General Staff confirmed the attack, which reportedly targeted a key unit of the massive complex.

Since early August, Ukraine has consistently targeted fuel infrastructure across Russia several times a week in a strategic effort to disrupt logistics and reduce revenue streams that support Moscow’s war machine.

Ukrainian forces now strike multiple fuel facilities each week. These repeated attacks have already triggered fuel shortages in several Russian regions, further pressuring the country’s ability to sustain its full-scale invasion.

Ukrainian drones strike deep inside Russia, setting Gazprom's Orenburg gas plant ablaze

The drone attack hit the Orenburg Gas Processing Plant in Orenburg Oblast, approximately 1,250 km from the Ukrainian border.

Ukrainian Telegram channel Exilenova+ first reported the explosion around 4 a.m., sharing photos of a bright red glow on the horizon. Local messages referenced smoke and fire in the area of the plant.

Shortly after, Supernova+ posted more images, including a screenshot from a local social group confirming the fire.

Additional images and videos of the burning facility were later shared by both channels.

The facility is one of Russia’s largest natural gas processing complexes and a key part of Gazprom’s infrastructure. It produces natural gas, stabilized gas condensate, sulfur, propane–butane mixtures, and other components.

According to Militarnyi, the plant’s declared maximum annual gas processing capacity reaches 40–45 billion cubic meters. It also handles up to 6.2 million tons of gas condensate and oil per year.

Russian Telegram news channel Astra reported that drones attacked the plant and that the strike caused a significant fire.

The governor of Orenburg Oblast, Evgenii Solntsev, confirmed that drones hit the Gazprom facility, stating that part of the infrastructure was damaged and that a fire broke out in one of the plant’s units.

Before the explosions, authorities had issued a drone alert for the region.

Ukraine confirms the Orenburg attack

Later, Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed that the drone attack caused explosions and a large fire on the plant’s territory. Preliminary information indicated that one of the gas treatment and purification units was hit.

The Ukrainian military emphasized that the facility plays a role in supporting Russia’s military needs and is part of its broader campaign to degrade critical infrastructure involved in sustaining the Russian war effort.

The General Staff also confirmed successful strikes on two other targets the same night: Rosneft's Novokuybyshevsk oil refinery in Samara Oblast and a fuel and lubricant depot in Russian-occupied Berdiansk on the coast of the Sea of Azov.

Russia's Defense Ministry claimed it destroyed 45 Ukrainian drones overnight, including one allegedly in Orenburg Oblast.

Update: Orenburg Gas Plant halts intake of Kazakhstan gas after last night's attack

Kazakhstan’s Energy Ministry said that Russia’s Orenburg Gas Processing Plant has temporarily stopped receiving raw gas from the Karachaganak field in northern Kazakhstan.

It cited Gazprom's statement, saying the stoppage was caused by an emergency situation resulting from a drone attack.

The extent of the damage and the timeline for resuming operations have not yet been provided by the Russian side.

Drone attack on Pryluky district in Chernihiv region leaves fire station damaged

Sun, October 19, 2025 - 13:12

In the evening and overnight, Russian forces launched a massive attack with strike drones on Pryluky district.

As a result of the shelling, the premises of the fire and rescue station were damaged, according to a statement from the head of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration, Vyacheslav Chaus.

Chaus noted that over the past day, the enemy shelled the region 46 times. Seventeen settlements were affected.

In most cases, these were FPV drone attacks and drops from drones in the border area. In one village of the Snovska community, a residential house and an outbuilding were damaged.

"In the evening and at night, Russian forces attacked Pryluky district in a wave of strike drones," he explained.

"There is damage to one of the infrastructure facilities and to the premises of the fire and rescue station," Chaus added.

According to Chaus, the enemy also targeted an energy facility in the border area.

About 17,000 subscribers in the Koriukivka and Novhorod-Siversky districts were left without power.

"Most have already been reconnected. Restoration work is ongoing," he said.

Attacks on Ukraine

It should be noted that over the past day, Russia shelled Chernihiv and Sumy regions more than 150 times.

In addition, the Russian army carried out an airstrike on the city of Lozova in Kharkiv region, using a guided aerial bomb. This is the first time the occupiers have used this type of weapon in the city.

The day before, the head of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, Vitaliy Kim, reported that, for the first time since the full-scale war began, Russia launched guided bombs on Mykolaiv.

On the night of October 19, Russian drones attacked the city of Shakhtarsk in Dnipropetrovsk region. Ten people were injured, residential buildings and cars were destroyed, and large-scale fires broke out.

Drone Activity Halts Flights at Canary Islands Airport

October 19, 2025

In an alarming incident on October 18, 2025, drone activity near an airport in the Canary Islands caused significant disruptions to air travel, forcing several flights to be grounded and rerouted.

The sighting of the drone, which flew too close to the airport, prompted immediate safety precautions that affected both incoming and outgoing flights.

This event is a stark reminder of the risks posed by unauthorized drone flights near busy airports and the need for stringent measures to prevent such incidents.

The Incident

According to reports, the drone was detected flying in close proximity to the airport, forcing authorities to take action to avoid any potential accidents or interference with aircraft operations.

As a result, all flights were suspended temporarily, disrupting travel plans for hundreds of passengers. The drone sighting occurred south of the airport, triggering an immediate response from airport security and aviation authorities.

The authorities implemented an emergency protocol that included halting all flights to ensure no aircraft were in the immediate vicinity of the drone. The flight suspension led to cancellations, delays, and diversions of several flights.

Furthermore, nearby Lanzarote Airport, which is located relatively close to the affected airport, also experienced delays due to the increased air traffic and the need to manage incoming flights diverted from the original airport.

Impact on Travelers

For passengers who were already aboard planes or waiting at the airport, the situation created chaos. Many travelers faced extended waiting times as they were left stranded at the airport, with no clear timeline for when their flights would resume.

Several flights were rerouted to alternative airports, further complicating the situation for passengers who now had to make last-minute travel adjustments.

Those who had already arrived at the airport were also impacted by the grounding of flights, leading to frustration as they sought new flight options or attempted to rebook their travel plans.

As the situation unfolded, many travelers expressed concern over the lack of clear communication regarding the cause of the delays and what steps were being taken to resolve the issue.

The incident serves as a reminder of how quickly disruptions can occur in the aviation sector due to unforeseen circumstances, such as unauthorized drone activity.

Passengers found themselves trapped in an uncertain situation, with no immediate resolution in sight.

Response from Authorities

Aviation authorities, including the Spanish Civil Aviation Authority (AESA), acted swiftly to address the situation. A temporary airspace closure was implemented around the affected airport to prevent further risks to incoming flights.

Airport security personnel worked in tandem with local law enforcement and the military to identify the source of the drone and ensure it was no longer a threat.

A team of experts from the airport’s air traffic control center used drone detection technologies to track and monitor the situation.

The security response was largely precautionary, with the safety of passengers and aircraft being the primary concern.

However, authorities were keenly aware that the situation could lead to widespread travel disruptions if the threat was not neutralized quickly.

In addition to closing the airspace, aviation officials also imposed strict controls on drone usage near the airport to ensure such incidents would not recur.

Efforts to increase surveillance in the region are expected to be a key part of the response going forward.

Broader Implications for Aviation Security

This incident highlights an increasing concern for aviation security as drone technology continues to grow in popularity and accessibility.

Drones are no longer just recreational gadgets but have become more advanced, with some being capable of interfering with air traffic control systems and airport operations.

While drones have legitimate uses, such as for surveillance, delivery, and photography, their unauthorized use near airports poses significant safety risks.

Global aviation authorities are grappling with the challenge of managing drone activity, particularly around busy airports. Many airports worldwide have begun investing in sophisticated anti-drone technologies to detect and neutralize rogue drones.

These technologies often include radar systems, drones equipped with jammers, and dedicated security forces trained to respond to drone-related incidents.

As drone usage continues to rise, it is vital for governments and aviation authorities to strengthen their regulations regarding drone operations, particularly in areas with high air traffic.

Clear guidelines, better monitoring systems, and stricter penalties for violators are necessary to safeguard the aviation industry and ensure the safety of passengers.

Economic and Environmental Impact

The economic effects of drone-related disruptions can be far-reaching, as seen in this incident. Airlines may face significant costs due to delays, cancellations, and the need for passengers to rebook flights.

Additionally, airports may incur additional costs for implementing increased security measures and handling the aftermath of such incidents.

On a broader scale, drone disruptions can also have environmental implications. Increased fuel consumption due to delays or diversions, as well as the potential risks of air traffic accidents, could contribute to higher carbon emissions, further impacting the environment.

Looking Ahead: Preventing Future Disruptions

The Canary Islands drone incident underscores the need for increased vigilance in managing drone activity, particularly near sensitive infrastructure such as airports.

Authorities must continue to develop and implement cutting-edge technologies to detect and neutralize drones that pose a threat to aviation safety.

Furthermore, a more robust framework for educating the public on the safe and responsible use of drones is essential to prevent future incidents.

Conclusion

The incident in the Canary Islands serves as an important reminder of the growing risks associated with unauthorized drone flights near airports.

While the situation was handled swiftly, it highlighted the vulnerabilities of the aviation sector in the face of rapidly advancing drone technology.

To ensure air travel remains safe and efficient, it is crucial for authorities, airlines, and the general public to work together in addressing the challenges posed by drones.

As the technology evolves, so must our approach to managing airspace and safeguarding passenger safety.

Clear regulations, better detection systems, and continued awareness of the risks will be essential in maintaining the security of global aviation systems.

Munich Airport Temporarily Closes After Drone Sightings, Flight Disruptions Minimal

Sunday, 19 October 2025, 17:32

On Saturday, October 18, Munich Airport temporarily closed due to reports of unknown drones.

According to local authorities, the incident occurred around 22:00 local time and lasted about half an hour; a second incident was recorded around 23:00.

Several security and airport staff reported “suspicious sightings”.

The Federal Police said that no drones or suspicious individuals were detected in the area.

Around midnight on October 18, the airport resumed operations, and by the morning of the following day air traffic had fully returned to normal.

According to airport management, the situation hardly affected flight schedules: diversions affected only three aircraft; two of them later landed in Munich, and one departure was canceled.

As a reminder, late on October 2, Munich Airport had already imposed restrictions, followed by a full halt to flights due to drone detections over the facility.

Due to safety requirements, 17 flights could not take off, affecting about 3,000 passengers. Additionally, 15 arriving flights were diverted to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna and Frankfurt.

On October 3, less than a day after the previous incident, Munich Airport again closed both runways due to reports of drone sightings.

The situation underscores the need to strengthen airspace control around major airports and to enhance readiness to respond quickly to similar threats to flight safety.

Key Points and Conclusions on Flight Safety

The events demonstrate the importance of improving airspace monitoring systems around major hubs and rapid coordination among airports, police authorities, and airlines to minimize disruption to flight schedules and passenger comfort.

Could the World Cup be vulnerable to drone attacks?

Oct 19, 2025, 5:01 AM

Washington faces a potential threat of a drone attack during the World Cup and at neighboring stadiums, according to one military leader. Eleven cities across the United States are hosting World Cup matches, and Seattle is among them.

In a draft report being finalized this month, the State’s Emergency Management Office is preparing to issue new guidance on drone activity to local and state jurisdictions.

“Drone threats remain difficult to counter due to civil rights protections, federal aviation restrictions, and the ease with which operators can evade law enforcement,” the draft states.

It also notes, “Federal law gives the FAA exclusive control of U.S. airspace, which limits what states and local jurisdictions can do on their own.”

Military chief’s dire warning: ‘A when, not if’ attack

General Gent Welsh has voiced concern over these vulnerabilities.

“I am concerned that we face another 9/11-style attack with the proliferation of attack drones these days. They are everywhere. I am just worried that it is a matter of time.

It is really a ‘when, not if’ situation that the United States deals with a widespread weaponized drone attack,” Welsh said in an interview at Camp Murray, according to KOMO News.

As Washington’s Adjutant General, Welsh holds several top roles.

He commands the state’s Army and Air National Guard, oversees the emergency management and enhanced 911 systems, and serves as the Governor’s Homeland Security Advisor.

He noted that recent events, combined with Seattle’s upcoming role as a 2026 World Cup host city, have heightened his concerns.

“I think you are seeing a preview of coming attractions from the last three years of the Ukrainian-Russian conflict,” Welsh told KOMO News referencing a recent surprise drone attack by Ukraine deep inside Russia.

“The truck opens up, drones fly in, and then go attack the nearest Russian air base. If you picture that scenario playing out in the United States, imagine the Port of Seattle with a lot of container traffic going in and out.

What would happen if one of those containers opened similarly, drones flew out and attacked people in nearby stadiums during a game, or even worse, flew over the hill to SeaTac?”

$500 million federal rescue confronts local confusion

Counter-drone efforts are underway, with the Trump administration allocating $500 million toward national security plans.

The Committee for Seattle World Cup has not responded to inquiries about the federal aid or the potential threat. They referred calls to the Seattle Police Department, which has yet to respond.

The Port of Seattle advised that all airspace-related questions be directed to the Federal Aviation Administration.

“Due to a lapse in funding, the FAA is not responding to routine media inquiries,” the FAA stated, In a response to an email inquiry.

Safety assurances

Governor Bob Ferguson also issued a statement, assuring the public that efforts are underway to ensure safety during the World Cup.

“We have been hard at work with our local, federal, international, and World Cup partners to ensure Seattle is one of the premier locations for the World Cup games.

We welcome this support to help bring people together safely and show the world what we can accomplish when we work together. We are working to get more information about this funding,” Ferguson told KOMO News.

Welsh expressed appreciation for the administration’s support.

“It was very encouraging to see that the administration put $500 million toward the counter-drone effort.

I do think that there is a threat to the World Cup. I do think that was recognized by the administration, Welsh told KOMO News.

🚨Threats Against Our Community Still Trust Lue?

Lue Elizondo once symbolized unity in the UAP movement. Now he’s threatening people inside it.

Publicly.

Researchers, experiencers, even former allies, anyone who questions his narrative is getting hit with veiled warnings and private hostility.

The same man who supposedly fought “government secrecy” seems to be building his own.

Something’s changing inside the disclosure world, and it’s not just policy, it’s power.

If the people demanding transparency can’t practice it themselves, what does that tell us about where this is headed?
