UN Body Votes To Postpone Decision On Global Carbon Tax Amid US 'Outrage'

The United Nations body specializing in regulating global shipping voted on Oct. 17 to delay a vote on the adoption of a proposed framework that will impose a global carbon tax on international shipping—a regulation the United States has strongly opposed.

Member states of the U.N.-backed International Maritime Organization (IMO) were set to approve the proposal on Oct. 17 when Saudi Arabia, which has voiced opposition to the plan, tabled a motion to defer the vote by one year.

The motion was passed with 57 votes in favor and 49 against.

The proposed net-zero framework would have required ships to comply with a global fuel standard for large oceangoing vessels of more than 5,000 gross tonnage, as part of an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the global shipping industry to net zero by 2050.

The IMO proposal has drawn strong opposition from the United States, the world’s largest oil producer.

President Donald Trump said ahead of the IMO vote that the United States would neither support a carbon tax on global shipping nor adhere to the plan “in any way, shape, or form.”

“I am outraged that the International Maritime Organization is voting in London this week to pass a global Carbon Tax,” he stated on a Truth Social post on Oct. 16, calling on others to reject the proposal.

“We will not tolerate increased prices on American Consumers or, the creation of a Green New Scam Bureaucracy to spend your money on their Green dreams.”

There are 176 member states of the IMO, but a passing vote would require a two-thirds majority of only the 108 member states that ratified previous legislation aiming to reduce shipping pollution.

IMO has said that the framework, due to take effect in 2027 if adopted, will be “the first in the world” to combine mandatory emissions limits and greenhouse gas pricing across an entire industry sector.

An Oct. 10 joint statement by U.S. State Secretary Marco Rubio, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the United States will not support any international agreement that “harms the interests of the American people.”

“The Administration unequivocally rejects this proposal before the IMO and will not tolerate any action that increases costs for our citizens, energy providers, shipping companies and their customers, or tourists,” the officials said in the statement.

“The economic impacts from this measure could be disastrous, with some estimates forecasting global shipping costs increasing as much as 10% or more,” they added.

After they used the angle grinder to breach a window, they broke into two display cases, snagged the loot, and escaped on motor scooters according to France's interior minister Laurent Nuñez - who said that the jewelry had "patrimonial" and "historical" value that made it "priceless."

President Donald Trump rebuked far-left Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Sunday morning, calling him an “illegal drug dealer” and announcing the stoppage of payments and subsidies to the country.

Trump blasted Petro in a Truth Social post.

“President Gustavo Petro, of Colombia, is an illegal drug leader strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs, in big and small fields, all over Colombia,” Trump wrote.

“It has become the biggest business in Colombia, by far, and Petro does nothing to stop it, despite large scale payments and subsidies from the USA that are nothing more than a long term rip off of America,” he added.

Trump then said that if Petro does not address the “killing fields” in Colombia, then the United States will.

“Petro, a low rated and very unpopular leader, with a fresh mouth toward America, better close up these killing fields immediately, or the United States will close them up for him, and it won’t be done nicely,” he concluded.

Trump announced on Saturday that his administration carried out a strike on “narcoterrorists,” at least two of whom were from Colombia and Ecuador. The president said the boat was transporting enough drugs to kill 25,000 Americans.

Small But Prized Picasso Painting Disappears on Trip from Madrid Museum

A tiny painting by Pablo Picasso — which measures only five-by-four inches but is worth nearly three quarters of a half million dollars — remains missing after it disappeared earlier this month while in transit from a Madrid museum.

The piece was part of artworks compiled from private collectors and meant for exhibition “Still Life: The Eternity of the Inanimate” at a museum in Granada, some 260 miles south of the country’s capital, according to news reports.

A van carrying dozens of those painting, including the Picasso piece, arrived at the CajaGranada Cultural Center after its four-hour trip on Friday, October 3. But when museum staff opened the crates the following Monday, the Picasso work was not to be found.

The small painting pictures an abstract indoor scene of a guitar lying on a table and is titled Still Life With Guitar.

The painting is insured for $700,000, according to Smithsonian Magazine.

The CajaGranada Foundation contacted Spain’s national police force, which is now investigating. According to the foundation, security cameras showed nothing suspicious occurred during the weekend before the artworks were unpacked.

“An investigation is currently underway, and the investigation is attempting to determine when and where the painting disappeared,” Granada police said in an official statement.

National Police in Granada also been added to the international database of stolen artworks.

Israel’s military said it hit multiple targets using aircraft and artillery in southern Gaza on Sunday, after it accused Hamas of shooting at Israeli soldiers, in a major test of an Israel-Hamas ceasefire that was brokered by the U.S. earlier this month.

An Israeli military official told CBS News that Hamas’ attacks included a rocket-propelled grenade targeting soldiers and sniper fire.

“Both of the incidents happened in an Israeli-controlled area, east of the yellow line,” the official said. “This is a bold violation of the ceasefire.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held consultations with Israel’s security heads and his office said in a statement that he had directed the military to take “strong action” against what he called “terrorist targets.” He did not threaten to return to war.

Hamas said that it was not involved in any clashes in Rafah in southern Gaza.

U.S. Judge Bruce Reinhart, who issued the warrant for the FBI’s raid on President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in 2022, once shared office space with deceased sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, according to newly revealed records.

Some of Judge Reinhart’s links to Epstein have long been known. Reinhart worked for the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of Florida while that branch was prosecuting Epstein for sex crimes in the mid-2000s, and he left that office to work for Epstein in January 2008—more than six months before the Justice Department’s plea deal with Epstein was finalized.

But that’s not all. On Friday, the House Oversight Committee released a transcript of its interview with former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Alex Acosta, who signed off on the Epstein plea deal. That transcript reveals that Judge Reinhart not only worked as an attorney for Epstein; he shared office with the deceased sex trafficker.

Indeed, Reinhart incorporated his private practice, Bruce E. Reinhart P.A., on Oct. 23, 2007, listing his address at 250 Australian Ave. South, Suite 1400, West Palm Beach, Florida. Exactly one week later, Epstein incorporated an organization called the Florida Science Foundation at the same address, which is also the office of his former lead attorney, Jack Goldberger.

Epstein would go on to work at the Florida Science Foundation on work-release while serving his 13-month sentence in 2008 and 2009—what’s widely been described as a “sweetheart” plea deal—for procuring a child for prostitution.

When House Oversight Committee investigators presented this evidence to Acosta last month, he expressed surprise.

“So you’ve just disclosed something that I did not know,” Acosta said. “I knew that he had left to work for Epstein while this case was pending. I did not know that he is the one that filed these articles of incorporation.”

Acosta also said it was unethical for Reinhart to have incorporated his private law practice while he was still working for the DOJ.

Most of the House Oversight Committee’s interview with Acosta focused on the plea deal his office granted Epstein. Acosta served as Trump’s Labor Secretary from 2017 to 2019, resigning after his role in the plea deal was thrust back into the public spotlight when Epstein was arrested again in July 2019.

Acosta has defended the plea deal on the grounds that it did result in Epstein’s incarceration and registration as a sex offender.

Netanyahu was scheduled to testify on Monday between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., and on Tuesday between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu requested that the Jerusalem District Court shorten the scheduled testimony hearings in his criminal trial to one and a half hours, due to two "urgent diplomatic meetings."

The Administration of the Courts announced soon after that, due to the nature of the meetings and personal matters of one of the three judges hearing the case, all hearings were cancelled for this week.

This week, Netanyahu was scheduled to testify on Monday between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., and on Tuesday between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The prime minister's attorney requested that both end early at 11 a.m. to accommodate the meetings, as well as briefings on Tuesday that "cannot be postponed."

Netanyahu will also be unavailable to testify on Wednesday and Thursday due to the visit of US Vice President J.D. Vance.

The prime minister was indicted in 2019 on the charges of bribery, fraud and breach-of-trust in one of the most complicated criminal cases in Israel. He pleaded not guilty to all three charges, and the trial has been ongoing since 2020, heard before Jerusalem District Court Judges Rivka Friedman-Feldman, Moshe Bar-Am, and Oded Shaham.

Jeffrey Epstein sent a barrage of nasty emails to his cash cow, billionaire Leon Black, pressuring him to fork over millions of dollars per year to keep his lavish lifestyle afloat.

The disgraced financier and sex trafficker warned that Black’s financial advisors and “retarded” children had created a “really dangerous mess” by attempting to plug the flow of cash, according to emails obtained by the New York Times.

“I never want to have any more uncomfortable money moments with you , I find it very distasteful,” Epstein wrote in a Nov. 2, 2015 email to the Apollo Global Management founder.

The emails sent to Black by Epstein in 2015 and 2016 illustrates the strong relationship between the two men, who were close friends as well as business associates.

Black, 74, employed Epstein as his wealth management advisor, who offered guidance on everything from taxes to the billionaire’s world-art collection.

For his services, Epstein was paid by Black to the tune of more than $150 million over the years, even after he was busted in 2004 for molesting a teenage girl, an offense that put him on the sex offender registry.

Black quickly became Epstein’s primary source of income, but by 2016 it was clear that the billionaire was reluctant to keep the money flowing, according to the Times.

That’s when Epstein threw a tantrum across dozens of emails that he fired off through his personal assistant in a battle that lasted several months, the outlet reported.

In one, Epstein called Black’s other financial advisors a “waste of money and space.”

In a wide-ranging interview last week, Schectman argued that what’s happening now represents the physical market finally “calling the bluff” of decades of paper manipulation.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” he began, emphasizing that this was not mere volatility. “Backwardation… shows extreme delivery stress… It’s the market exposing the shortages of physical silver, the frailty of the paper promises.”

For Schectman, “backwardation”—when spot prices exceed futures prices—isn’t just a technical quirk. It’s the alarm bell that the supply of real metal is running thin. He believes the era when investors could comfortably rely on “paper silver” derivatives is ending.

“People have accepted paper promises for a very long time and I think that’s coming to an end,” he said. “This is decisively bullish for silver and other precious metals.”

When asked what’s actually driving this rupture, Schectman pointed to signs of stress that only appear when market structures break down. Spot prices are now higher than future delivery prices—something, he said, “very rare” in silver and “a signal of desperate demand.” Lease rates in London, normally a fraction of a percent, “jumped up over 39%.” The picture he painted was one of panic beneath the surface.

“In London they have a 140 million ounce float, yet they’re trading 600 million ounces a day… There’s over two billion ounces in paper claims out there on a float of 140 million.”

In Schectman’s view, London is the epicenter of a quiet crisis, where years of “rehypothecation”—multiple claims on the same bars—are being exposed. “It’s being called under the carpet,” he warned.

“You’re beginning to see margin calls… they’re not able to get the silver to cover their position,” he said. “That’s when things begin to get very, very, very interesting.”

In the short term, he acknowledged, the chaos could create sharp swings—“liquidations and survival-driven selling”—but he sees that as temporary. “Once forced selling ends, the physical scarcity starts to dominate and silver sustains its higher prices $50 plus.” In the long run, he sees this as a system reset: “If confidence in this paper system collapses, a structural repricing of silver begins.”

FBI Pittsburgh Arrested 19 Violent Fugitives

FBI Pittsburgh, along with local, state, and federal partners, arrested 19 dangerous wanted fugitives during a five-day operation as part of Summer Heat, an FBI nationwide initiative targeting violent crime.

Between October 6 and October 10, FBI Pittsburgh, the United States Marshals Service (USMS), the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO), and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Fugitive Apprehension Unit (PBP-FAU) partnered to identify targets, collect intelligence, conduct investigative analysis, and arrest these individuals.

“Law enforcement at all levels shares the same goal: protect the communities we serve. This operation proves our commitment to that mission,” said FBI Pittsburgh Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek. “It does not matter if you’re in Western Pennsylvania, across the United States, or anywhere else in the world, the FBI and our partners will find you and will bring you to justice. We take Crushing Violent Crime to heart, and we will not stop.”

FBI Pittsburgh Special Agents and Task Force Officers embedded with each partner agency to coordinate movements, provide investigative support, and share information in real-time.

“The United States Marshals Service is constantly collaborating with various law enforcement partners on initiatives that target and reduce violent crime," U.S. Marshal Stephen Eberle said in a statement. "We will continue to work closely with all law enforcement to keep our communities safe and bring dangerous fugitives to justice.
