Massie is disingenuous. The U.S. has already been importing Argentine beef since 1997.
The United States began importing fresh (chilled or frozen) beef from Argentina in August 1997, following the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) lifting of a 68-year ban on such imports due to concerns over foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). This decision was influenced by negotiations during the GATT Uruguay Round, after Argentina demonstrated effective disease control measures.
Prior to 1997, the U.S. had imported limited processed or frozen Argentine beef products under restricted quotas, but fresh beef shipments were prohibited since 1929. Imports have continued since 1997, with periodic adjustments for FMD outbreaks (e.g., a temporary suspension after 2001 cases, resolved by 2015 when Northern Argentina was fully authorized). By 2024, Argentina supplied about 2% of total U.S. beef imports.
