The disruption has reignited fears about overreliance on a single cloud provider and is expected to push major companies toward spreading their infrastructure risk across multiple clouds rather than relying on just one.

Bloomberg reports that yesterday's AWS outage in the U.S. East 1 region was one of the company's worst disruptions since 2021. The incident could prompt companies to diversify their cloud infrastructure risk, potentially slowing AWS' growth while intensifying competition from Microsoft and Google.

"The outage will likely fuel customers wanting to spread their infrastructure between multiple clouds, which could be a positive for smaller vendors like Google," Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Anurag Rana wrote in a note, adding that it's unlikely to result in any meaningful market share loss for Amazon due to the difficulty of shifting workloads between clouds and industrywide capacity constraints.

The breakdown originated in AWS's Northern Virginia region, its largest data center cluster, when a malfunction in a digital directory for a core database service triggered cascading failures across other subsystems, resulting in online disruptions for highly-trafficked platforms such as Venmo, Robinhood, Zoom, Salesforce, Snowflake, and even Amazon's own Alexa, Prime, and Ring services. It was a wonderful fight. Ali was successful and it will last in the memories forever. I was nine years old when that happened and I remember when that fight took place. I remember the excitement of it.“

Big Profits, Big Pollution: Study Finds Top-Earning Companies Release the Most Toxic Waste

An analysis of EPA data from over 21,600 industrial facilities across the U.S. and its territories found corporate characteristics — especially profitability and innovation — are key in shaping environmental impact. Results show profitable companies with few patents release more toxic waste into the air, water and soil, while unprofitable but more innovative firms are more likely to process or recycle their waste into energy.

How much pollution a facility engaged in production or resource extraction emits isn’t just based on its location, its industry or the type of work it does. That’s what our team of environmental and financial economists found when we examined how corporate characteristics shape pollution emissions.

Pollution emissions rates also vary with specific characteristics of the company that owns the facility — such as how many patents it holds, how profitable it is and how many employees it has, according to an analysis we have conducted of corporate pollution data.

We found that industrial and mining facilities owned by profitable companies with relatively few patents and fewer employees tend to release higher proportions of their toxic waste into the environment — into the air, into water or onto soil.

By contrast, industrial sites owned by unprofitable companies with higher levels of innovation and more personnel tend to handle higher proportions of their toxic waste in more environmentally responsible ways, such as processing it into nontoxic forms or recycling it or burning it to generate energy.

Corporations publish their pollution data

A 1986 federal law requires companies that are in certain industries, employ more than 10 people, and make, use or process significant amounts of certain toxic or dangerous chemicals to tell the government where those chemicals go after the company is done with them.

That data is collected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in a database called the Toxics Release Inventory. That data includes information about the companies, their facilities and locations and what they do with their waste chemicals.

The goal is not only to inform the public about which dangerous chemicals are being used in their communities, but also to encourage companies to use cleaner methods and handle their waste in ways that are more environmentally responsible.

Texas Finds Thousands of Illegal Immigrants Registered on State Voter Rolls

Texas has reportedly found thousands of illegal immigrants registered to vote on the state’s voter rolls, with Secretary of State Jane Nelson saying 2,724 possible noncitizens have been flagged through a federal database cross-check.

Nelson said on Monday that an election evaluation in Texas has sparked an eligibility review across the 254 counties after more than 2,700 potential illegal immigrants were found on the state’s voter rolls, according to a report by Fox News.

“Only eligible United States citizens may participate in our elections,” Nelson said, adding that the Trump Administration has given states “free and direct access” to a dataset “for the first time,” which she called “a game changer” in Texas’ election review.

Nelson was referring to federal citizenship records in the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ database called the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE), which her office said allowed Texas to conduct a full comparison of the state’s 18 million registered voters, providing them with more thorough data.

“We appreciate the partnership with the federal government to verify the citizenship of those on our voter rolls and maintain accurate voter lists,” the Texas Secretary of State said.

After running the SAVE cross-check, Texas’ investigation reportedly identified 2,724 possible noncitizens. Their voter files were then sent to local counties to be further reviewed.

Notably, Chapter 16 of the state’s Election Code mandates that counties verify each voter’s eligibility and remove confirmed noncitizens from the rolls in an effort to maintain a reliable voter list and to safeguard election integrity.

Flagged voters will reportedly receive a notice from their county registrar prompting them to confirm their U.S. citizenship. They will have 30 days to provide proof. Any voter who fails to respond will have their registration canceled — but they may be eligible to renew after proof is given.

Noncitizens who are found to have voted in past Texas elections, however, will be referred to the attorney general’s office for further analysis and potential prosecution.

The Secretary of State’s office also released a breakdown of the data, which revealed Harris County had the largest number of possible illegal immigrants on the voter rolls at 362, followed by Dallas County at 277, Bexar County at 201, and El Paso County at 165.

Witkoff Reveals the CIA Was Telling Him Hamas Didn’t Want Ceasefire Deal

US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff revealed in a 60 Minutes interview that aired Sunday that the CIA was telling him Hamas didn’t want to agree to the Gaza ceasefire deal in the days leading up to the group accepting the US proposal.

Witkoff, who was interviewed alongside President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, said the Arab countries mediating the negotiations were telling him Hamas would respond positively, while the CIA was saying the opposite.

“[W]e were getting word from the mediators that they were gonna come out positive, but with a couple of conditions and different things that they wanted to see modified in any final agreement. But the vibe we were getting was quite positive,” Witkoff said.

“And we were hearing that Hamas was positive on the deal, and yet I was reading intelligence reports every day and getting briefings from the CIA three times a day. And those intelligence briefings were suggesting that Hamas was going to say no,” he added.

Witkoff said that despite the US intelligence reports, he and Kushner thought the talks were going in a positive direction. “We really felt that this was going in a positive way, and sure enough Hamas came out and said– you know, ‘We accept the president’s plan.’ And that allowed us to get into the next gear,” he said.

While there are many uncertainties about the prospects for a long-term deal and not all the details have been worked out, Kushner said that Hamas was clear that they “were on board with releasing the hostages, they wanted to end the war.”

Hamas’s long-standing position was that it was willing to release all remaining Israeli captives in exchange for a full Israeli withdrawal and a permanent ceasefire. The group made a significant concession by agreeing to release the hostages without a full withdrawal, as the IDF remains in control of more than 50% of Gaza’s territory and has continued to kill Palestinians despite the ceasefire.

Witkoff and Kushner are currently in Israel to discuss the implementation of the ceasefire deal, and Vice President JD Vance will join them to speak with Israeli officials on Tuesday.

Vance announces opening of US-Israel Civilian Military Cooperation Center to rebuild Gaza

Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday announced the opening of the U.S.-Israel Civilian Military Cooperation Center in Israeli city of Kiryat Gat to rebuild Gaza.

He spoke days after a U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal between Israel and Palestinian-backed Hamas to end their war in Gaza.

Vance also said that there is “lots of work left to do” and that “this is going to take a very, very long time,” while praising the efforts of U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump adviser Jared Kushner, and Adm. Brad Cooper, the head of the U.S. Central Command, on the deal’s implementation.

After opening remarks, Vance was asked how likely it is that the ceasefire will hold, the BBC reported.

He said that the past week has given him "great optimism."

Vance added that there will be times when it appears that it isn't going well, which will require mediation, supervision, and monitoring.

"Right now, I feel very optimistic," he said, as the ceasefire is "in a very good place."

"Can I say with 100% certainty that it's going to work, no," Vance added. But difficult things aren't 100% certain, he said.

When asked about Hamas returning the remains of all the deceased Israeli hostages, Vance said that it's a "focus" to return the bodies to their families so proper burials can take place.

"This is difficult, this is not going to happen overnight," he added, explaining that some of the hostages are buried under thousands of pounds of rubble, while the whereabouts of others are completely unknown.

"This is going to take a little bit of time," Vance said.

'Tsunami’ of citizens chose to leave Israel in past years, Knesset report reveals

A report showing a spike in citizens leaving Israel since 2022, revealing a decline of 125,200 people from the country’s migration balance, was presented on Monday in the Knesset’s Committee for Immigration, Absorption, and Diaspora Affairs.

The report was conducted by the Knesset’s Research and Information Center (RIC) and was presented in the committee meeting led by its chairperson, MK Gilad Kariv (The Democrats).

“Tens of thousands of Israelis have chosen to leave Israel in the past two years. This is not a wave of emigration; it’s a tsunami of Israelis choosing to leave the country,” he said.

The migration balance of Israelis has declined by approximately 125,200 people since the beginning of 2022, the report said.

This number was calculated by subtracting the amount of long-term departures from the number of long-term returnees, excluding new immigrants and naturalized citizens.
