North Carolina Accountant Arrested After Allegedly Opening Fire on MAGA Supporter Over Trump Sign
A 38-year-old accountant from North Carolina, Benjamin Michael Campbell, has been arrested after allegedly opening fire on a Trump supporter over a campaign sign, according to the Daily Mail.
Police say Campbell drove past the home of 62-year-old Mark Thomas and came to a screeching halt when he spotted a Trump sign along the road. What happened next, according to Thomas, was a politically charged outburst that nearly turned deadly.
“He was driving along, saw the sign, slammed on his brakes — you know, had a political trigger moment — and he just had to tear the sign down,” Thomas told the Daily Mail. “He started reaching up on his tippy toes, trying to get to the edge of the sign. I just thought to myself, this is not happening.”
Thomas says he went outside and fired two warning shots after the man began ripping down the display.
“By this point, he had ripped the sign off and just whipped it up and threw it on the ground. Like he was proud of what he just did. I thought, holy smokes.”
But things escalated quickly. Campbell allegedly returned to his vehicle, grabbed a gun, and fired five to six rounds toward Thomas as he drove away.
“He fired five to six rounds as he was heading back down the driveway to the highway that passes in front of my place,” Thomas said.
Authorities later arrested Campbell — who stands 5’6” — and charged him with Class C felony assault. If convicted, he faces up to 17 years in prison.
The incident underscores how political rage continues to boil over in everyday America, where even a simple yard sign can trigger violence.
Thomas, unharmed but shaken, summed up what many feel after years of escalating political hostility:
“All that over a sign. Just a sign.”
