arXiv is where physicists and astronomers share preprints — if a paper isn’t there, it almost doesn’t exist.
It serves as the central hub for open scientific exchange, where unpublished, newly accepted, and even rejected manuscripts are shared so that other researchers can read, test, and build upon the work.
It’s how ideas circulate rapidly and transparently — long before (and sometimes regardless of) formal publication.
Now, both of our accepted and peer-reviewed papers — in PASP and Scientific Reports — have been rejected from arXiv server:
in one case I was told to replace an older work; in the other, that the research was “not of interest” to arXiv.
Empirical results, peer review, and publication in high-quality journals are no longer enough to satisfy the gatekeepers. Scientists are being prevented from reading new results. The UFO stigma remains strong.

This is the document that tells scientists what to do if we detect alien intelligence.
The new version expands everything from radio beacons to technosignatures of any kind, like lasers, heat signatures, megastructures, even physical artefacts.

The update didn’t come from politicians or the Pentagon. It came from scientists.
Jodrell Bank’s Michael Garrett, York anthropologist Kathryn Denning, space lawyer Leslie Tennen, and astrobiologist Carol Oliver led a full rewrite.
Their goal is to drag the 1989 framework into the AI, deepfake, and social media era.

It’s no longer just about what happens if we find a signal. It’s about how to confirm, communicate, and survive it.
The new rules:
Data must be verified independently and archived in multiple global repositories.
Researchers’ safety is now a formal concern.
Transparency is mandatory.

“Pending international consultation, no reply should be sent to a confirmed detection.”
Any response must go through the United Nations or other global bodies. No single government or lab can speak for Earth.
That’s a major shift in tone.

Principle #8 adds ethics and law.
And the new preamble openly admits that AI, social media, and political chaos now define how discovery will unfold.
SETI is preparing for information warfare as much as contact.

The document even mentions ChatGPT, literally used during feedback analysis for community consultation.
The 2025 draft was crowdsourced through surveys, early career SETI networks, and the Post Detection Hub at St Andrews.
Hundreds of scientists helped write this thing.

If ratified before year’s end, the 2026 Update becomes the first globally recognized contact era framework built for our century.

The subtext is that they’re planning for the possibility that discovery isn’t hypothetical anymore.
