Prosecutors not ruling out state charges for commuted ex-Rep. George Santos

Santos was released after three months of a seven-year sentence.

Former Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., was freed from prison last week thanks to his federal fraud sentence being commuted by President Donald Trump – but he may not be free from criminal prosecution on the local level.

The district attorney’s office in Nassau County, which is home to part of the district Santos represented, declined to say what, if anything, prosecutors might be investigating that could warrant state charges.

"Since first learning of George Santos' actions, I have been at the forefront of bringing him to justice," Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said in a statement. "I am proud of the work my office has done, and the conviction achieved in partnership with the U.S. Attorney's office. While the office cannot comment on ongoing investigations, suffice it to say that I remain focused on prosecuting political corruption wherever it exists regardless of political affiliation."

Santos was three months into a seven-year prison sentence for deception, fraud and lying to Congress when Trump intervened, noting Santos "had the Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN!"

According to the clemency grant, a photo of which was posted on X by U.S. Pardon Attorney Ed Martin, Trump granted Santos an "immediate commutation of his entire sentence to time served with no further fines, restitution, probation, supervised release, or other conditions."

The ex-lawmaker was released from prison just before 11 p.m. on Friday night and was picked up by his family, according to a statement from his lawyer, Joe Murray.

Santos pleaded guilty to a series of fraud crimes and was sentenced in April to 87 months in prison the maximum he faced and two years of supervised release.

DEI hire makes excuses

Louvre chief blames CCTV gaps for $150m jewellery heist

The Louvre's cameras failed to detect burglars in time to prevent their audacious daylight heist of some of France's crown jewels, the museum's director has said.

The thieves used a crane and smashed an upstairs window before stealing jewels worth an estimated 88 million euros ($157 million).

They then escaped on motorbikes.

News of the theft, which occurred steps away from the Mona Lisa, reverberated around the world and prompted soul-searching in France over what some viewed as a national humiliation.

Louvre director Laurence des Cars told senators that she had offered her resignation, but it had been refused by Culture Minister Rachida Dati, who has also come under fire after the robbery.

"Despite our efforts, despite our hard work every day, we were defeated," Ms des Cars told a senate committee.

Many in France and around the world have been baffled as to how four hooded assailants were able to drive up to the world's most visited museum, smash a second-floor window and make off with a handsome booty without getting caught.

"We did not detect the thieves' arrival early enough," Ms des Cars said.

'Frantic': US ramps up pressure on Gaza ceasefire deal amid Israeli frustration

As Washington tightens oversight and dispatches top envoys to Israel, Jerusalem concedes limited ability to rein in American momentum; Vance, Rubio and CENTCOM lead a coordinated push to secure hostages, disarm Hamas and stabilize Gaza

The increasingly intense U.S. involvement in the implementation of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas is "frantic," one senior Israeli official described on Wednesday.

“They're going full bore,” the official said, reflecting growing frustration in Jerusalem as Washington tightens its supervision of the deal, particularly regarding the airlift of high-level envoys to Israel.

Israeli officials acknowledge they have limited ability to slow what one described as the “American locomotive,” and are instead focused on “damage control.” Despite tensions within Israel’s diplomatic ranks, officials admit the reality is clear: U.S. engagement in the region is expected to grow even more intensive. Washington, they say, is determined not to let the agreement unravel. Its top priority remains the return of all hostages to Israel.

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance addressed the issue, noting that some deceased hostages are buried deep underground and will take time to locate. “We need to be patient,” he said, adding that Western media are covering each incident in a hysterical manner aimed at portraying the deal as a failure. Still, Vance struck an optimistic tone, pointing to a major effort underway to uphold the ceasefire.

At the same time, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) chief Adm. Brad Cooper is pushing forward with plans to establish an international stabilization force for Gaza. The force will include a multinational task unit deployed to search for the bodies of hostages.

According to the plan, the stabilization force will oversee Hamas' disarmament and the demilitarization of Gaza, while also ensuring Israel does not violate the ceasefire through military operations. Sources involved say the force is intended to counterbalance Hamas and provide the Palestinian population with a basic sense of security.

ICE Tracker Planned By Democrats Could Endanger Agents, Bondi Says

Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Oct. 22 that a plan by Democrats to launch an online platform tracking Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Los Angeles could endanger federal agents and expose them to harassment or violence.

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif) said during an Oct. 21 press conference alongside Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass that Democrats on the House Oversight Committee will launch what Garcia called a “master ICE tracker.” The online database would allow the public to submit and review reports of ICE activity across the Los Angeles area, including videos and other data.

“Over the course of the next couple of weeks, the Oversight Committee will be launching on their website a master ICE tracker where we’re going to be essentially tracking every single instance that we can verify that the community will send,” Garcia said.

“You’ll be able to send us information on. It’ll be all available in one central place, and you’ll be able to look up that information as it relates to Los Angeles as well.”

Garcia described the initiative as part of a wide congressional investigation into alleged wrongful detentions by ICE under the Trump administration. Garcia also said he plans to hold a congressional field hearing in Los Angeles, where residents can testify about immigration enforcement concerns, calling it part of a broader inquiry into alleged civil rights violations by federal agents.

He has joined forces with Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), who is leading a parallel investigation through the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. The two lawmakers recently sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem demanding records on what they described as the unlawful detention of U.S. citizens and immigrants by ICE agents.

The ICE tracker project drew swift condemnation from Bondi, who said such tools could compromise law enforcement operations and fuel organized hostility toward immigration officers.

“Shutdown Democrats are already refusing to pay our law enforcement agents. Now, @RepRobertGarcia and @SenBlumenthal are trying to put ICE agents at risk just for doing their jobs,” Bondi said in an Oct. 22 post on X.

“@TheJusticeDept has ZERO tolerance for violence against law enforcement—we will prosecute any person who physically assaults our agents.”

Border czar Tom Homan said recent heated rhetoric, along with efforts to expose the movements and identities of ICE agents, have already correlated with a surge in organized attacks on law enforcement personnel and facilities.
