When you get high, losing your drugs is one of the easiest things to do.
I've lost weed many a time, thinking after smoking one that I'll just put it in a safe space and I'll easily remember, then spend an hour trying to find it again. It can happen. Mind you, with hard drugs it might be a bit different considering how dependent people become on those.
It can be a nice surprise when you find months later what you never found months before.
I messed around with cocaine when I was 18. Watched it destroy the lives of two friends and it scared me straight. Pleasant enough high but too short, and watching how they started behaving when it became a full blown addiction wasn't something I ever wanted to take part in.

I avoided heroin by it not being available at all where I live, at least back then anyway, it's here now though. Only opioids I ever did in my life were codeine in T3's and cough syrup, didn't feel a thing, given morphine in the hospital and I despised the feeling of that, skin all crawling and itchy, just a dirty feeling high that wasn't pleasant at all. The one and only time they gave me demerol in the hospital, wow, I enjoyed that a lot and realized in that moment how dangerous opioids were.
