Before high altitude air travel those nucleation sites were provided by nature as dust, pollen, and other naturally airborne particulates. Now, aircraft exhaust can perform the same function. Cirrus cloud cover is commonly formed by aircraft-induced clouds, but clouds require nucleation sites no matter the source of particulates.
