#OTD in 1962, an officer aboard Soviet sub B-59 averted nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis by refusing to allow the captain to launch a nuclear torpedo. Too deep to monitor radio traffic about the state of affairs, the captain had become convinced that actions by U.S Navy ships to force the sub to the surface indicated that war had already begun.
