A truck carrying Rhesus monkeys infected with hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID-19 overturned on Interstate 59 near mile marker 117 in Jasper County, Mississippi, on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, resulting in several monkeys escaping and one remaining at large as of the afternoon. The monkeys, weighing approximately 40 pounds each and described as aggressive toward humans, require personal protective equipment to handle. Authorities have destroyed five of the six escaped monkeys for public safety, while the sixth remains on the loose. Tulane University, the origin of the shipment, has been notified and will send a team to retrieve the remaining caged monkeys on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.
The crash occurred on I-59 north of Heidelberg, Mississippi, near mile marker 117.
The monkeys were being transported from Tulane University in New Orleans to a testing facility in Florida.
All but one of the escaped monkeys have been destroyed; the remaining animal is still at large as of Tuesday afternoon.
Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries, along with local law enforcement, are on-site assisting with the search and containment efforts.
Residents are advised not to approach any monkeys and to call 911 immediately if one is sighted.
Tulane University officials stated the monkeys are not contagious, though they carry hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID-19.
