Food bought with U.S. taxpayer money — meant to feed struggling families here — is being boxed up and shipped overseas to Cuba, Haiti, and Venezuela. There are freight companies openly advertising this service. It’s legal-looking on paper, but it’s built on one thing: American welfare benefits being drained and exported.
The U.S. spends over a trillion dollars a year on welfare and entitlements. The foreign-born population, legal and illegal, receives an estimated $365 billion of it — more than the GDP of entire countries. Roughly 11% of SNAP benefits, or about $11 billion, go to foreign-born participants. And even if just 1% of total SNAP funds are trafficked, that’s another billion-dollar hole in the system.
Meanwhile, remittances — cash and goods sent abroad, often indirectly funded by welfare benefits — drain over $200 billion out of the U.S. economy every year, according to FAIR. Money leaves our borders, but accountability never follows it.
