Indira Talwani is a U.S. District Judge for the District of Massachusetts, known for her significant contributions to civil rights and immigration law, and for being the first federal judge of Asian descent in Massachusetts.
Early Life and Education
Indira Talwani was born on October 6, 1960, in Englewood, New Jersey, to a family that valued education and public service. Her father, Manik Talwani, was a geophysicist from Punjab, India, and her mother is of German descent. Talwani graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Radcliffe College (Harvard University) in 1982. She then earned her Juris Doctor from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law in 1988, graduating Order of the Coif and serving as Articles Editor for the Industrial Relations Law Journal.

Legal Career
Talwani began her legal career as a law clerk for Judge Stanley A. Weigel of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California from 1988 to 1989. She then worked at the San Francisco law firm Altshuler Berzon LLP from 1989 to 1999, where she became a partner. In 1999, she moved to Boston and joined Segal Roitman LLP, focusing on civil litigation, particularly in employment law and class actions.

Judicial Appointment
On September 24, 2013, President Barack Obama nominated Talwani to the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, filling the seat vacated by Judge Mark L. Wolf. She was confirmed by the Senate on May 8, 2014, with a unanimous vote of 94-0. Talwani received her judicial commission on May 12, 2014.
