Gravitational Lensing of 3I/ATLAS by the Sun
November 2, 2025
Three remarkable facts about 3I/ATLAS are that it passed closest to the Sun on October 29, 2025, just 8 days after solar conjunction relative to Earth on October 21 and 26 days after crossing the ecliptic plane on October 3, 2025 — when it was closest to Mars.
Whether this confluence of orbital coincidences might be a signature of design or not, it offers a remarkable opportunity to observe the effect of gravitational lensing of 3I/ATLAS by the Sun. Here are the details.
According to Einstein’s theory of gravity, which I am about to teach in my class at the Harvard Astronomy department tomorrow, the light from 3I/ATLAS is deflected by an angle:
(4GM/c²)[D_ds/(AD_s*D_d)]
where G is Newton’s constant, M is the mass of the Sun, c is the speed of light, A is the angular separation of the image of 3I/ATLAS from the center of the Sun and D_ds, D_s, D_d are the distances between the Sun and 3I/ATLAS (deflector-source), the Earth and 3I/ATLAS (source), and the Sun from Earth (deflector).
Substituting the values of D_d=1 au (where `au’=astronomical unit), D_ds=1.36 au and D_s=2.36 au at the perihelion of 3I/ATLAS, I get that the deflection angle equals:
0.27 arcsecond/(A/1 degree)
The derived value for the deflection angle is measurable by astronomical telescopes.
On October 29, 2025, a non-gravitational acceleration of 3I/ATLAS near perihelion was reported here and discussed here.
The related data was obtained by the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), which indicated that 3I/ATLAS was 4 arcseconds away in Right Ascension from where it was supposed to be near perihelion according to its forecasted trajectory.
The gravitational lensing by the Sun amounts to a small fraction of the reported deviation. However, it would be exciting to analyze the ALMA data and check whether it shows evidence for the small effect of gravitational lensing by the Sun.
Observations of 3I/ATLAS close to perihelion by the Solar observatories STEREO, SOHO and GOES-19 (as discussed here and reported here), revealed unprecedented brightening and a color bluer than the Sun.
Adding that to the list of anomalies displayed by 3I/ATLAS brings the total tally to 9, as follows:
-
Its retrograde trajectory is aligned to within 5 degrees with the ecliptic plane of the planets around the Sun, with a likelihood of 0.2% (see here).
-
During July and August 2025, it displayed a sunward jet (anti-tail) that is not an optical illusion from geometric perspective, unlike familiar comets (see here).
-
Its nucleus is about a million times more massive than 1I/`Oumuamua and a thousand times more massive than 2I/Borisov, while moving faster than both, altogether with a likelihood of less than 0.1% (see here and here).
-
Its arrival time was fine-tuned to bring it within tens of millions of kilometers from Mars, Venus and Jupiter and be unobservable from Earth at perihelion, with a likelihood of 0.005% (see here).
-
Its gas plume contains much more nickel than iron (as found in industrially-produced nickel alloys) and a nickel to cyanide ratio that is orders of magnitude larger than that of all known comets, including 2I/Borisov, with a likelihood below 1% (see here).
-
Its gas plume contains only 4% water by mass, a primary constituent of familiar comets (see here).
-
It shows extreme negative polarization, unprecedented for all known comets, including 2I/Borisov, with a likelihood below 1% (see here).
-
It arrived from a direction coincident with the radio “Wow! Signal” to within 9 degrees, with a likelihood of 0.6% (see here).
-
Near perihelion, it brightened faster than any known comet and was bluer than the Sun (see here).
If these anomalies are all associated with a natural comet, then the non-gravitational acceleration of 3I/ATLAS must have resulted from it losing at least 15% of its mass, as I calculated here.
This should have resulted in a massive debris cloud around 3I/ATLAS, carrying over 5 billion tons of gas.
It would be impossible to miss this massive cloud in upcoming observations during November and December, as 3I/ATLAS comes closest to Earth on December 19, 2025.
If such a massive cloud is not observed, then the 10th anomaly of 3I/ATLAS would be the display of non-gravitational acceleration without the required massive coma.

Out of the hundreds of emails I received from around the world yesterday, one carried a particularly uplifting message:
“Dr. Loeb,
My name is Dustin Collier. I’m a civil rights trial attorney based out of the San Francisco Bay Area, representing victims of workplace discrimination, harassment, and retaliation all up and down the West coast.
I also hold a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. I heard you mention on JRE (here) that you originally wanted to be a philosopher, before getting drawn into astrophysics through a program you were selected for at Princeton, and now you attempt to apply your scientific prowess to philosophical inquiries.
The word philosophy derives from “philos” and “sophos,” meaning “love” and “knowledge,” respectively. Any true philosopher has a thirst for knowledge across all fields, and they really encourage philosophy students to broaden their horizons with interests in other fields.
Towards that end, during my philosophy studies, I also took upper division courses in political science, macroeconomics, and psychology, to name a few.
But one of my oldest passions has always been science. Every single day, I wind down by watching an hour or two of PBS Space Time on YouTube, trying to wrap my head around quantum mechanics, astrophysics, general and special relativity, and the like.
It is also so fascinating and, for the genuine “lover of knowledge,” it is an endless stream of wonder, mystery, and pioneering research. At times I fantasize about an alternate timeline where I became a physicist myself.
One of my favorite undergraduate classes was “Philosophy of Science,” where we discussed the various paradigm shifts that have occurred throughout the history of science (often initiated by philosophers dabbling in science on the side).
Suffice to say, those shifts have never occurred as a result of a person refusing to acknowledge anomalies and insisting on dogmatic existing explanations for new phenomena that warrant reconsideration of that very same dogma.
All of this is background to tell you just how much I enjoy your work, your writing, and your fearless approach to scientific inquiry.
These last several weeks, I have found myself engaged in more than one fruitless debate with your detractors online — purported scientists who brutally attack your integrity and your hypotheses without bother to test them, analyze them, or provide natural explanations for the phenomena you are so actively attempting to resolve.
There’s also this clear pattern of mischaracterizing what you say to make it seem as though you have bet your entire professional reputation on us making first contact, when in truth you have clearly stated time and again that more data is needed and you merely think the possibility is substantial enough and the risks potentially catastrophic enough (“black swan”) to warrant an open mind and continued investigation.
In philosophy, we learn that appeals to authority, popular opinion, and ad hominem attacks are all logical fallacies to be disregarded. What matters is data, logic, and experimentation by those willing to be proven wrong.
You so thoroughly exemplify the proper approach to the scientific method, and your critics so thoroughly exemplify the opposite, that I have found it discouraging and something of a metaphor for the state of our crumbling societal discourse writ large.
But you give me hope. I am writing today because I want you to know what an inspiration you are to so many people who you no doubt have never thought about and don’t even realize they are following your work, including but by no means limited to myself.
Please don’t let the naysayers slow you down one bit, though I know from your public statements that this isn’t in your DNA anyways.
And if you ever need a lawyer to threaten your detractors who are bordering more on defamation than legitimate criticism or feedback, I would be happy to assist you with that on a pro bono basis in my spare time.
I sincerely hope you never need that assistance. Whatever happens over the next three months, thank you for reminding me that logical and good-hearted people still exist.
I share your optimism that any non-human intelligence we may discover in the future is likely to have resolved many of the problems presently facing humanity (e.g., war, climate crisis, etc.) and we will have much to learn from them.
For that reason alone, your work is vitally important in a way your critics don’t appear to appreciate, but I do.”

Jupiter-Bound Mission To Study Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS From Deep Space This Weekend
November 1, 2025
Interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS is about to be studied from not one but two locations in deep space. The comet has just gone through perihelion, the closest approach to the Sun, but unfortunately, it is on the opposite side of our star.
Over the last few days, it has become visible again, but it can’t be studied in detail from observatories on and around Earth due to the glare of the Sun. That’s how JUICE comes into the fray.
The European Space Agency’s JUICE is a groundbreaking mission to study the icy moons of Jupiter: Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa.
We believe that there are liquid oceans inside those moons, and the mission will study their properties, including the possibility of life.
It will also become the first spacecraft to enter orbit around a moon that is not the Moon: Ganymede, the largest moon in the Solar System and the only one with a magnetic field.
But to do all that, the spacecraft is on a fuel-saving, slow-and-steady trajectory to Jupiter – it will get there in the early 2030s.
So, the probe is just traveling in deep space, which means it is in a fortuitously good position to catch comet 3I/ATLAS in these exciting days post-perihelion.
“All this campaign was unexpected for everybody!" Olivier Witasse, ESA Project Scientist, told IFLScience.
"For JUICE, indeed, we are in a cruise phase during which there are thermal constraints, being relatively close to the Sun (with respect to the science phase around Jupiter).
Therefore, no payload activities were expected to take place at this moment. However, given the uniqueness of these observations, it was decided to prepare this extra observation planning."
The spacecraft will observe the comet twice, even though it will never get very close. The close passage will be on November 4, when the comet will be 64 million kilometers (39.8 million miles) from JUICE.
That is about 0.428 astronomical units, with 1 AU being the average Earth-Sun distance. Despite the distance, JUICE has a camera and instruments ready to study the comet.
“JUICE will observe 3I/ATLAS between 2 and 25 November.
We will be using five instruments: the camera, the near-infrared imaging instrument, the UV spectrometer, the sub-millimetre instrument, and a sensor to image neutral atoms.
We are far away (0.5 Astronomical units), therefore, only remote sensing,” Witasse explained.
ESA missions not on Earth have already observed the comet, such as the space agency’s orbiters around Mars.
Using JUICE is a great opportunity to study the comet at its period of maximum activity, even though it will take some time to collect all this data.
“Due to the position of JUICE with respect to Earth, the data rate is very low. We expect the data to be downloaded only in February 2026, so we need to be a bit patient,” Witasse explained.
While we wait for these insights, more will be coming. The comet is now coming away from the Sun, and the Earth is moving towards it, so we will have better chances to see it from our own backyard.

Elon Musk's "Suicide" Comment Amid Talk Of Alien Comet With Joe Rogan
Nov 02, 2025 15:53 pm IST
Elon Musk said he was “never committing suicide” while discussing the mysterious interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS with podcaster Joe Rogan.
The billionaire made the remark during an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, where he spoke about theories on extraterrestrial life and the comet's possible alien connections.
The comment came as a response to long-running online conspiracy theories suggesting that anyone who discovers alien secrets meets a mysterious end.
“I mean, one thing I can say is, look, if I was aware of any evidence of aliens - Joe, you have my word - I will come on your show and I will reveal it on the show,” Musk said.
He then added, “I'm never committing suicide, to be clear. So, on camera, guys, I am never committing suicide ever.”
Comet 3I/ATLAS is the third recorded interstellar object to enter the solar system. Its unusual composition and trajectory have drawn attention from scientists and theorists.
Some experts, including Harvard astrophysicist Dr Avi Loeb and Michio Kaku, have suggested that the comet's anomalous movement could hint at artificial origins or even alien technology, while others maintain that natural explanations are more plausible.
Musk offered his take on the comet's name and structure. “It's a hell of a name. It sounds like ‘Third Eye' or something,” he joked.
Rogan referenced Avi Loeb's observation that 3I/ATLAS is composed largely of nickel, a material more commonly found in industrial alloys.
Musk responded, “There are definitely comets and asteroids that are made primarily of nickel… it doesn't mean it's a spaceship.” He laughed and added, “Yeah, it'd be a very sort of heavy spaceship to make it all out of nickel.”
According to NASA, 3I/ATLAS is classified as an interstellar object due to its hyperbolic orbital path, confirming that it originated outside our solar system.
On Wednesday, a sudden surge in the brightness of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS was detected by multiple spacecraft as the comet reached its closest point to the Sun (perihelion).
The phenomenon led to global scientific attention due to its unusual behaviour and striking blue hue. According to observations from NASA's STEREO-A, SOHO, and GOES-19 instruments, 3I/ATLAS brightened sharply between September and October.
Colour measurements revealed that the comet appeared bluer than the Sun, suggesting intense gas emissions during its perihelion phase contributed to the visual effect.
Avi Loeb described the comet's blue colour as “extremely surprising,” saying that dust typically reddens sunlight, making this observation highly unusual.
He labelled the blue tint as the ninth anomalous characteristic of the comet, adding to other irregularities such as its near-ecliptic orbit, visible jet directed toward the Sun, and an unusually large nucleus.

'Grifter' Avi Loeb Claims 3I/ATLAS Is 'Natural' Then Allegedly 'Demands $1B From Congress'
02 November 2025, 8:46 AM GMT
In the high-stakes world of UAP disclosure, where reputations are built and destroyed in a single tweet, a new bombshell has just detonated. The target? Dr Avi Loeb, the controversial and high-profile Harvard astronomer.
A shocking new 'off-camera leak' claims the man pushing for billion-dollar funding to find alien technology knows the objects he is chasing are nothing but space rocks. Is this the exposé that ends a career, or a calculated smear campaign?
Harvard Fraud or Hearsay? The 3I/ATLAS and Avi Loeb Controversy
The firestorm began when user MikeDisclosure posted what they termed a 'HARVARD FRAUD EXPOSED' moment.
The post alleges that in a 'SHOCKING OFF-CAMERA LEAK', Dr Loeb admitted a specific object, '3I/ATLAS', is '100% NATURAL.'
This allegation is explosive, as Loeb has been at the centre of speculation about interstellar objects, including Oumuamua, potentially being of artificial origin.
3I/ATLAS is the third interstellar object ever detected in our solar system, a massive, Manhattan-sized comet discovered in July 2025 that has baffled scientists with anomalous features, including an unusual 'sunward' tail and a chemical composition high in nickel but lacking iron—a signature Loeb himself has publicly linked to industrial processes.
The tweet attributes a devastating quote directly to Loeb: '3I/ATLAS is definitely a natural object… I need the billion from Congress for my projects.'
The implication is dire. MikeDisclosure accuses Loeb of knowing 'it's a rock — but SELLS THE LIE for taxpayer cash!' The post frames Loeb as a 'grifter' allegedly seeking a '$1 Billion Dollar payout from Congress' to 'chase fake aliens.'
This accusation, which stems from a discussion hosted by Ty Roberts on the Total Disclosure Podcast, strikes at the very heart of the astronomer's credibility and the integrity of his Galileo Project.
The Galileo Project is Loeb's privately-funded scientific initiative to search for physical evidence of extraterrestrial technological 'signatures' (or artifacts) rather than radio signals.
The '$1 billion' figure appears to be a contentious interpretation of a hypothetical statement Loeb made about the cost of a future, comprehensive sky-survey, not a formal request for his current project.
'A Nuanced Thinker' or 'Grifter'? The 3I/ATLAS and Avi Loeb Debate Rages
The online response was immediate and deeply divided. Defenders of Dr Loeb, like Jon Baker, PharmD, pushed back hard.
'Sounds like you haven't listened to a single Loeb interview,' Baker retorted. 'He literally says it is likely natural every time he speaks.
His beef is with academics automatically excluding technological origins anytime there are anomalies, which isn't scientific at all.'

NASA Goddard Union Pushes Back
November 2, 2025
according to a press release issued by GESTA, (Goddard Engineers, Scientists and Technicians Association – IFPTE local 29) the employee union at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, on Saturday night:
“Throughout there has been a complete breakdown in communication from NASA agency and Center leadership where decisions are rarely communicated, almost always only verbally, and not directly by the decision makers.”
Full release below
Context: NASA Goddard Space Center is the largest group of scientists, technicians and engineers in the US and world who develop Earth and space science flight missions.
-
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is closing 13 campus buildings (including ~100 laboratories) with extreme haste and with no transparent strategy or benefit to NASA or the Nation.
-
Tens or hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer-funded NASA property and laboratories are at risk of either being discarded, mishandled, or out-of-commission for significant time periods.
-
Unique and critical US and NASA capabilities are being abandoned without consultation with NASA employees (e.g., mission leads, subject-matter experts), NASA agency leads, Congress, or the public.
-
High profile missions currently supported by the public, Congress and/or the President (e.g., Roman, Dragonfly) will be immediately harmed or endangered.
-
Closure activities are proceeding during the government shutdown, which may be illegal under the Antideficiency Act and further endangers property.
-
The closures are being justified as cost-saving but no details are being provided and any short-term savings are unlikely to offset a full account of moving costs and the reduced ability to complete NASA missions.
-
Some employees are being ordered or pressured to: Perform activities without pay; Pack and move with minimal notice; Discard valuable equipment and flight hardware they have dedicated years to; Have their personal property handled by others while not present
-
Goddard management had previously agreed during union bargaining to halt moves until adequate laboratory space had been identified but they are reneging on those agreements.
-
NASA and Goddard have a recent history of closing high profile facilities for no logical reason – the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York was closed in May under the pretense of saving money, but NASA is continuing to pay rent. [Scientific American].
-
Throughout there has been a complete breakdown in communication from NASA agency and Center leadership where decisions are rarely communicated, almost always only verbally, and not directly by the decision makers.
