“Researchers at the University of Waterloo have developed a new approach that could help public health officials predict where outbreaks might occur,” a post to social media reads. “By analyzing social media posts, the method identifies early signs of increasing vaccine skepticism — a warning signal that could emerge before any disease begins to spread.”

Lead researcher Dr. Chris Bauch explained the groundbreaking new model: “In nature, we have contagious systems like diseases. We decided to look at social dynamics like an ecological system and studied how misinformation can spread contagiously from user to user through a social media network.”

“The usual methods of predicting an outbreak by doing a statistical analysis of skeptical tweets don’t provide much lead time before an outbreak,” he furthered. “By using the mathematical theory of tipping points, we were able to get a much bigger lead time and detect patterns in the data much more effectively.”

This work forms part of Waterloo’s broader attempt to restore evidence-based decision-making and repair fraying public confidence in science. Prince Edward Island RCMP has laid its first-ever terrorism charges in Atlantic Canada against a man accused of 3D-printing weapons for use in terrorist activities.

The “landmark terrorism case” resulted from months of investigation that uncovered a suspect alleged to be part of an extremist threat, the RCMP said in a Nov. 19 press release.

The suspect was first charged with allegedly printing 3-D firearms and making online threats to unspecified individuals and organizations in February, before being released from custody on July 23 under “strict conditions.”

Due to the nature of the online comments along with the weapons and 3D printing material seized from the suspect’s home, investigators said they had reason to believe the individual might engage in terrorism. Police said the suspect has been under a terrorism peace bond since Aug. 18 to ensure the community was “kept safe throughout the ongoing investigation.”

“The individual charged is in custody, and there is no evidence of a broader network or active risk to the public at this time. This case should not be seen as reflective of broader trends in our community,” the RCMP wrote in their Nov. 19 press release. “P.E.I. remains one of the safest places in Canada, and this case demonstrates police readiness to respond to even the most serious threats.”

Daniel Desmond Crowder, 50, of North Rustico, P.E.I., roughly half an hour north of Charlottetown, is facing a terrorism charge connected to an attempt to facilitate a terrorist activity by making and possessing weapons contrary to Canada’s Criminal Code. He is also charged with possessing 3D-printing equipment, weapons, guides for making an AR-15 rifle, and 3D-printed weapons and weapon parts intended for use in a terrorist activity. Continue…

Only 2 percent of Canadian businesses report seeing a return on investment from artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, according to a recent survey.

The survey, conducted by professional services firm KPMG, asked more than 750 business leaders about AI technology and investment in their organizations.

It found 93 percent of organizations were using AI, up from 61 percent in 2024, but most had yet to see a return on their investment in the technology.

Two percent said they were seeing a return on investment (ROI), while 37 percent said they expected it could take up to three years before seeing a return. Another 24 percent said they expected it to take between three and five years before they started seeing benefits from AI. A trade agreement has been ratified by all provinces, territories, and the federal government to eliminate trade barriers, giving businesses more opportunities to sell their products across the country.

The Canadian Mutual Recognition Agreement was signed by all provinces, territories, and Ottawa on Nov. 17. The agreement, which was spearheaded by British Columbia, is set to take effect next month and covers thousands of products, with the exception of food, beverages, tobacco, plants, and animals.

B.C. Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth Ravi Kahlon announced the agreement in Victoria on Nov. 19, although the deal was signed by the country’s trade ministers at a meeting in Yellowknife two days earlier.

The senior public servant revealed this information during his testimony at the House of Commons ethics committee on Wednesday concerning the review of the Conflict of Interest Act in response to questions by Bloc Québécois MP and committee vice-chair Luc Thériault.

Sabia is one of two senior public servants to Prime Minister Mark Carney who is authorized to administer his extensive conflict-of-interest screen that applies to over 100 corporate entities related to Brookfield Asset Management, Brookfield Corporation and Stripe Inc.
