Viennese teachers are reporting growing challenges with students from immigrant backgrounds who are increasingly unwilling to learn German or adapt to local values, according to teachers’ union representative Thomas Krebs of the Christian Trade Unionists Group (FCG).

Speaking to Heute, Krebs said many of those arriving from conflict or crisis regions now bring radical beliefs that pose problems in Austrian classrooms.

“In the past, people fled from extremism. Now, many people come to us radicalized by extremism and spread these ideas here as well,” said Krebs.

He cited incidents of female teachers being disrespected or assaulted by male students and parents, saying such behavior reflects imported attitudes that reject gender equality.

“This disrespect ranges from refusing to shake hands to insults and physical assaults,” he added.

Krebs said the problem also affects staff relations, with reports of some male teachers refusing to shake hands with female colleagues for similar reasons. He warned that children from Western or secular families are sometimes treated as inferior by classmates, while those from conservative backgrounds who wish to integrate face pressure to conform.

“Students from Western cultural backgrounds are not seen as equals,” Krebs said, adding that liberal democratic values are often dismissed in favor of religious rules.

The province of Quebec has the highest euthanasia rate in the world.

On October 30, the Quebec 2024–2025 Report of the Commission on End-of-Life Care revealed that deaths by Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) have reached 7.4 percent of the total provincial deaths and have increased 9% since last year.

“The Commission notes that MAiD is in increasing demand and occupies an important place in the public sphere in Quebec,” the report asserts.

“The Commission rigorously and vigilantly fulfills its mandate to ensure that MAiD requirements are properly applied in Quebec and that MAiD is not chosen as a treatment option when other [sic] curative, palliative, or end-of-life care options are unavailable,” it continued.

Despite its promise, the commission reported that 50 percent of the MAiD requests were from those who felt they were a burden to family, friends, or caregivers. Twenty-four percent of those killed cited loneliness and isolation as reasons to end their lives.

Additionally, the report found an alarmingly short period of time between MAiD requests and doctors administering the lethal drugs. According to the report, 4 percent of requests for MAiD were fulfilled on the same or next day. Continue…

Health Canada has issued a recall for “laughing gas” that it says is being sold without authorization and presents a serious safety risk.

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is legal in Canada when it is administered by a health care professional, such as for dental surgery or medical procedures for sedation or pain relief. The gas is also found in cream dispensers and some food tools but is not mean to be inhaled, Health Canada said.

The products being recalled, nitrous oxide chargers, have been sold for inhalation without being authorized, according to Health Canada.

The agency has warned Canadians not to inhale nitrous oxide products for recreational purposes, and advised those who have done so and experienced side effects to seek medical attention immediately.

The brands selling the impacted products include Bamboozle, Best Whip, Gold Whip, GreatWhip, Prime Whip, and Whip-It! Some of the items have flavours like lemon mint ice, strawberry, and pineapple, among others, while other products are unflavoured.

The letter posted by Kooner is from a “community contact” with the B.C. premier’s office identified as Kristine, who says she will be available throughout November to answer any questions or concerns about the Cowichan ruling.

“My role is to work directly with Richmond residents and small businesses potentially affected by the recent Cowichan land title decision,” the flyer reads, adding that support is available to “listen to your experiences—including any impacts on mortgages refinancing, property sales, or permits.”

The flyer adds that it will keep residents updated “as the province moves forward on next steps” and connect landowners with the right contacts within the provincial government to address their specific situations.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne says his goal is to make Canada “the NATO partner of choice,” noting that refining critical minerals is “the name of the game” for becoming a competitive supplier.

“Exploration, extraction is something, but what we need is refining. That’s the key,” Champagne told a business audience in Calgary on Nov. 10, while answering questions about the Liberal government’s recently tabled budget. “Refining is the name of the game.”

The minister noted that refining critical minerals is essential for defence, and said Canada has refineries for minerals like titanium, which is needed to build submarines and other defence systems.

Champagne said that while there are other countries that can provide critical minerals, Canada can offer more with “proximity to resources, market, and refinery.”

“My goal is … if Canada could become the NATO partner of choice,” the minister said, adding that critical minerals are becoming a “decisive” product for the “competitiveness” of countries.

Champagne told the business audience that “mentalities are evolving” when it comes to developing oil and gas resources and ensuring they can get to market. He said Prime Minister Mark Carney has “changed the tone” by describing Canada as an “energy superpower in both clean and conventional energy,” which he said has changed how people perceive these things. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced Canada has imposed more sanctions on Russia while attending a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Ontario’s Niagara region.

“We firmly believe that continued collective pressure on Russia is necessary… So today, we are announcing a new package of sanctions to further increase the economic costs to Russia of waging war,” Anand said at a press conference in Niagara-on-the-Lake on Nov. 12.

The sanctions, which came into force on Nov. 6, target 13 individuals and 11 entities, including several that are involved in the development and deployment of Russia’s drone program in its war against Ukraine, according to a release from Global Affairs Canada.

The sanctions also target entities supplying the cyber infrastructure Russia has used in cyberattacks against Ukraine, and a Kyrgyzstan-owned financial institution that has been enabling Russia to evade sanctions.

Also included in the sanctions are several Russian liquefied natural gas entities that provide energy revenues allowing Moscow to fund its war against Ukraine, the statement says, as well as 100 vessels from Russia’s “shadow fleet” used to transport oil while evading Western sanctions.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said during the press conference alongside Anand that the G7 meeting was “important for our peace efforts.” He said Ukraine wants to see an end to the war, and the leaders will be discussing “practical steps to bring it to a close.” Continue…

Apple Watch owners in Japan and Canada can now receive cellular Starlink service on the Ultra 3, Series 11 and SE 3 models, according to a quarterly earnings report from Japanese telecom operator KDDI, spotted by Ookla analyst Mike Dano and reported by PC Mag. The service is provided by KDDI's Au wireless carrier - and only provides text messaging service where watch owners can't access traditional cellular networks.
