Quebec says it will intensify its crackdown on public displays of religion in a sweeping new law that critics say pushes Canadian provinces into private spaces and disproportionately affects Muslims.

Bill 9, introduced by the governing Coalition Avenir Québec on Thursday, bans prayer in public institutions, including in colleges and universities. It also bans communal prayer on public roads and in parks, with the threat of fines of C$1,125 for groups in contravention of the prohibition. Short public events with prior approval are exempt.

CAQ has made secularism a key legislative priority, passing the controversial Bill 21 – which bans some public sector employees from wearing religious symbol – in 2019. It plans to extend that prohibition to anyone working in daycares, colleges, universities and private schools. Full face coverings would be banned for anyone in those institutions, including students.

Quebec’s secularism minister, Jean-François Roberge, said the controversial new provisions were the latest steps in a province working towards full secularization. The agency has issued notices on its website about the virus’s presence at four commercial properties in the Strathroy-Caradoc area. The first notice was dated Nov. 14, with the rest dated on Nov. 22, Nov. 26, and Nov. 28.

The agency has established a “primary control zone” to prevent the spread of the disease. Such zones require permits for the movement of birds, their products, and by-products through a control zone, according to the CFIA.

A previously unseen video recording of a Chinese general’s secret military trial for refusing to carry out orders during the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre has surfaced online in the past few days, offering a unique look into one of the most sensitive cases from the period.

On Nov. 24, Wu Renhua, a Chinese scholar and participant of the 1989 Tiananmen protests, shared the full video on X. The six-hour video, now taken down from the Internet Archive and uploaded on YouTube by Human Rights in China, showed the trial of Major General Xu Qinxian, on March 17, 1990, who was the then-commander of the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) 38th Group Army.

Xu was dismissed and secretly sentenced after refusing to sign orders deploying his troops into Beijing to enforce martial law. The 38th Group Army was considered a core elite unit, and Xu’s defiance surprised senior leaders, including the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) then-de facto leaders Deng Xiaoping and Yang Shangkun.

The CCP declared martial law on May 20, 1989, as mass pro-democracy demonstrations spread across Beijing and other cities. Xu refused when military officials first convened to deliver the deployment order.

The PLA eventually entered the capital roughly two weeks later, opening fire on civilians on June 3–4. Continue…

A leading Jewish group is continuing its legal battle against the University of Windsor’s boycott of Israel, enacted as part of an agreement with protesters to end anti-Israel encampments on campus last year.

“The agreements are discriminatory and signify a dangerous capitulation to extremists,” Richard Marceau, senior vice-president of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), said in a statement after the group appealed a court ruling that left intact a provincial decision upholding the agreement.

The deal with anti-Israel protesters, who were part of a wave of anti-Israel protests at universities across Canada, included a mandate for the university to develop anti-racism initiatives, divest from investments in organizations involved in Israel’s offensive in Gaza, review academic partnerships with Israeli universities, as well as provide opportunities supporting Palestinian students and scholars.

It was signed by the university and by protesters, who called themselves the “Windsor Liberation Zone Team,” following weeks of negotiation.

On Oct. 29, the Divisional Court dismissed the CIJA’s request for judicial review of the Ontario Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery’s decision upholding the deal.

It has been 56 years since Alden Joseph Brown walked into the woods in Colchester County on a deer hunting trip with his father and uncle.

Nov. 29, 1969 was also the last time anyone saw Alden, who was 12 at the time.

He and his relatives were supposed to be out for just a few hours that morning. They went into the woods on Pembroke Road in Burnside not far from a farmhouse owned by a family friend, and they were supposed to meet at that house at noon.

Alden's father, Bernard, and uncle, Neil, returned, but Alden didn’t.

When he still wasn’t there by 1:30 p.m., they drove around the area and to Stewiacke and Truro, but there was no sign of Alden, a Grade 7 student at the former Prince Andrew School in Dartmouth.

The two men saw another hunter who told him he had met Alden on a road at 2:45 p.m. and he had asked for directions back to the farmhouse.

However, critics slam the proposal as a giveaway to foreign labor at the expense of American workers, especially amid rising unemployment in the tech sector.

Importing foreign workers has long been criticized for displacing U.S. citizens from their jobs and driving down wages. There are countless stories of Americans having to train their cheaper, foreign replacements.

Indians have long dominated the H-1B program, receiving over 72% of all visas issued in fiscal year 2023 (October 2022 to September 2023).

6,000 Airbus A320 Jets Receive Critical Update After "Intense Solar Radiation" Exposure

Airbus announced early Monday that nearly all A320-family commercial jets have received a critical software update after "intense solar radiation" last month triggered a glitch that could affect flight controls.

"Out of a total number of around 6,000 aircraft potentially impacted, the vast majority have now received the necessary modifications," Airbus wrote in a press release, adding, "We are working with our airline customers to support the modification of less than 100 remaining aircraft to ensure they can be returned to service."

Last Friday, Airbus released an Alert Operators Transmission to all airlines operating the narrow-body jet about an urgent software update, warning the fix could cause "operational disruptions to passengers and customers."

The planemaker said the corrupted flight-control data was caused by "intense solar radiation."

At cruising altitude, jets are exposed to 100 to 300 times more solar radiation than at ground level, and a solar storm can amplify that exposure enough to disrupt avionics processors, including corrupting memory or causing logic errors.

After a forced conscript was beaten in his groin area to the point that he lost an “organ” following emergency surgery, Ukrainian authorities have moved to arrest the recruitment center head.

The staff of the Ukrainian State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) arrested the head of one of the district recruitment and military service preparation centers (TCK) in the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast.

The recruiter is accused of brutally beating a conscripted man for refusing to perform a fluorographic examination during the medical aptitude test (VLK), reported by the General Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine and the DBR, based on the announcements of Ukrainian news outlet Pravda.ua.

The DBR investigated complaints from citizens and parliamentarians that beatings, torture, and demands for money had taken place in a TCK operation in Transcarpathia.
