Back in the day when grip frames were made of steel, scopes and dot sights were attached to a base that sat above the slide. That base was attached to the grip frame by a thin flat piece of metal that fit between one of the grip panels and the frame.

Then optical sights that could withstand slamming back and forth on the slide itself were developed and delivered sufficient accuracy that the old system was all but forgetten about.
