COVELO, Calif.—Driving up the steep and windy road from his station in Ukiah, Mendocino County Sheriff Matt Kendall stops his pickup at a pullout overlooking California’s Round Valley.

“It’s where the trouble begins and never ends,” he told The Epoch Times.

Native American sovereignty and California’s policies that shield illegal immigrants have allowed Mexican drug cartels to swoop in on tribal lands of the Round Valley Indian Tribes, a confederation of several tribes, the sheriff said.

The valley, known for illegal marijuana grows on tribal lands, is remote and surrounded by forested mountainous terrain. It’s a patchwork of tribal lands and those sold off to private owners years ago.

Kendall, 56, grew up here in the 1970s. During the drive to Covelo, an isolated town in the valley, he talks about how the times have changed over the decades.

“Back in the ’60s and ’70s, it was a beautiful place—a lot of freedom here,” he said. “When we were kids, we'd be riding our horses and having fun. Every kid in this valley had a horse. We’d go out to the river. All of us had summertime jobs, hauling hay and cutting firewood.”

His nostalgic journey ends abruptly as he passes a burned-out building with murals of missing women on its walls—a stark reminder of the violence that plagues the valley. Other banners along the road display their names and faces, including that of Khadijah Rose Britton, a native American woman who, according to the FBI, was last seen in Covelo being kidnapped at gunpoint in 2018.

Today, Kendall says, “there’s a little bit of farming, and then just tons and tons of marijuana, and pretty much all of it is illegal.”

“We see a lot of Hispanics here when there is no work, no sawmill jobs, no grapes, no vineyards and not much logging. They’re all here taking orders to grow marijuana, and a lot of it’s happening on tribal lands.”

He estimates up to 80 percent of the illegal marijuana in Mendocino County is grown on tribal lands, based on aerial surveillance and satellite imagery revealing a vast network of illegal grow ops.

Trump renominates Jared Isaacman as NASA administrator

President Donald Trump has nominated Jared Isaacman again as the new NASA Administrator to fill the roles as Transportation Secretary will now be stepping back from acting in the role.

Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, "Sean Duffy has done an incredible job as Interim Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This evening, I am pleased to nominate Jared Isaacman, an accomplished business leader, philanthropist, pilot, and astronaut, as Administrator of NASA."

Isaacman was previously tapped by Trump to lead NASA, but his nomination was pulled just a few days before his Senate confirmation hearing after his history came under review. “After a thorough review of prior associations, I am hereby withdrawing the nomination of Jared Isaacman to head NASA,” Trump said in a Truth Social Post on May 31.

Isaacman had given major donations to Democratic campaigns, but he has also been widely perceived as an ally to Elon Musk. Trump has reportedly met with Isaacman multiple times over the past several months to discuss another nomination, per the New York Post.

Isaacman responded to the second nomination in a post on X, "The support from the space-loving community has been overwhelming. I am not sure how I earned the trust of so many, but I will do everything I can to live up to those expectations. Israel approves bill that allows execution of Palestinian prisoners

The Knesset National Security Committee advanced a bill Monday to introduce the death penalty for terrorists, after government hostage pointman Gal Hirsch told the panel that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supports the measure.

The bill could have its first reading in the Knesset plenum as soon as Wednesday, Hebrew media reported.

The controversial legislation stipulates that courts will be able to impose the death penalty on those who have committed a nationalistically motivated murder of a citizen of Israel. It would not apply to an Israeli who killed a Palestinian.

Hirsch, who had initially voiced opposition to the bill during a National Security Committee meeting in September, reversed course on Monday, saying that both he and Netanyahu were in favor of the bill.

“The prime minister’s position, and I spoke with him before the debate, is for the bill,” Hirsch told the panel.

He said he was revoking his own opposition to the bill — which was due to fear of Hamas harming the living hostages it was holding — since the reason for it was no longer relevant.

Hirsch had told the committee in September that the position of the security professionals working to bring the hostages back was that the discussions on the proposed legislation should be suspended.

But, he said on Monday, “we are in a different situation today,” given that the final 20 living hostages have now been returned to Israel. “Therefore, the resistance I expressed in the previous debate has become redundant.”

However, Hirsch said, the legislation should only be passed on the condition that Israel’s security establishment, as well as the government’s Coordinator for the Hostages and Missing — Hirsch’s position — have the right to issue a confidential opinion on each individual case before the death penalty is handed down.

The bill was introduced by Otzma Yehudit lawmaker Limor Son Har-Melech, and has been championed by her party’s leader, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.

Ben Gvir warned on October 20, two weeks ago, that if the bill did not move forward to pass its first reading in the Knesset plenum within three weeks, his far-right party would no longer consider itself obligated to vote with the coalition.

He welcomed Netanyahu’s support for the bill on Monday, but argued that neither the courts nor the security establishment should have discretion in the matter of sentencing terrorists to death.

Billions Wasted on Migrant Hotels: Bombshell Report Reveals "Incompetent" UK Home Office Lets Private Firms Make "Excessive Profits

According to latest figures the Home Office is supporting 103,000 migrants at the taxpayers' expense including just over 32,000 in hotels.

Migrant hotels cost the taxpayer an average of £144.98 per person per night compared with just £23.25 for dispersal accommodation.

In 2019 the Home Office signed 10-year contracts with the three companies to provide asylum accommodation across the UK.

Sercoholds the contracts for the North West, Midlands and the East of England, Clearsprings operates in the South and Wales; and Mears covers Yorkshire and the Humber, the North East, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The contracts were initially focused on providing self-catering flats and houses – termed “dispersal accommodation” by the Home Office – but expanded to hotels during the pandemic onwards amid a surge in Channel crossings.

The companies also operate large-scale accommodation centres on ex-military sites at Wethersfield, Essex, and Napier Barracks, in Folkestone, Kent.

At the time they were signed, it was estimated the contracts would cost the taxpayer £4.5 billion over a decade but officials now predict the final bill will be £15.3 billion.

Election Day Updates: Polls Close In Virginia, Spanberger (D) Projected To Win Gubernatorial Election

Update (1931ET): The first polls closed today in Virginia at 7PM ET.

Latest Updates and exit polls:

Democrat Rep. Abigail Spanberger is projected to win the Virginia gubernatorial election.

Independent and unaffiliated voters in Chester County, PA were forced to cast provisional ballots after poll books listing only Republicans and Democrats were delivered to polling sites.

Exit polls suggest a dropoff in registrations for the Democratic party.

The RealClearPolitics polling average favors Mamdani by 14.3 percentage points. Unlike its primary contest, New York City uses the first past-the-post system for general elections, meaning that, should Mamdani perform as polls suggest, he would win the election.

Virginia

Meanwhile, voters in Virginia will decide a gubernatorial race between Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears and Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger in a race favoring the Democrat.

Virginians will also elect an attorney general in a race between Republican Jason Miyares and Democrat Jay Jones - with Jones having wished death on Republicans in text messages, which several prominent Democrats defended.

New Jersey

In New Jersey, voters will decide between Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli.

Ciattarelli was also the party’s nominee in the 2021 election and lost to incumbent Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat, in a close contest.

Sherrill is ahead of Ciattarelli in the polls, but in recent weeks, the polling gap has significantly narrowed to the point where her lead is either close to or within the margin of error. The average of all major polls aggregated by RealClearPolitics shows Sherrill with a polling lead of 3.3 percentage points.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania voters will cast ballots for their state Supreme Court, where three Democrats facing recalls hope to retain their seats for 10 more years.

California

In California, voters will decide on Proposition 50, a measure which would 'temporarily' (lol) redraw the state’s congressional maps in response to changes made by Texas to its maps.

The referendum is backed by Democrats and seeks to temporarily bypass California’s independent redistricting committee and revise the state’s congressional district boundaries for elections to the U.S. House of Representatives, so as to win the party more seats in the next general elections to the House in 2026.

Due to the state’s heavy Democratic lean, the proposition appears likely to pass, with the “Yes” side garnering 56 percent in favor, according to a poll by the Public Policy Institute of California. It has a 13 percentage point lead over the “No” side of the vote.

Former Chair of the UN Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Judge Navi Pillay has warned that Australia risks complicity in genocide if we fail to act on Israel’s assault on Gaza

Speaking at the National Press Club, the former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reiterated calls for the Australian government to fulfil its obligations under international law in light of the findings of the UN Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory which concluded that Israel’s actions in Gaza meet the threshold for genocide under international law.

‘We are all witnesses to the carnage’

Pillay stressed that every government, including Australia’s, had witnessed the livestreamed atrocities in Gaza unfold in real time and could not claim they “didn’t know” what was happening.

“We are all witnesses to the carnage in real time on our TV screens…. 65,000 Palestinian civilians [have been] killed, including women and children and it was all shown live on our TV sets, so nobody can say we didn’t know what was happening. No Australian parliamentarian could say we didn’t know what was happening. That was the defence the Nazis put up. …That is what some South African whites said.”

The veteran jurist, who presided over the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, said the Commission’s findings were based on verified evidence collected over the past two years. Pillay said that in determining whether Israel had genocidal intent, the panel implemented the legal test established by the International Court of Justice, that genocidal intent is the “only reasonable inference” from the facts.

“We followed UN rules, and we followed the test for genocidal intent. … It must be the only reasonable inference from the acts themselves.”

In September, the Commission concluded that genocidal intent was “the only reasonable inference” from Israel’s conduct, pointing to the military’s use of heavy munitions in densely populated areas, the systematic destruction of cultural and religious sites, and repeated defiance of International Court of Justice (ICJ) rulings ordering provisional measures.

The report also found that Israeli authorities committed four of the five genocidal acts defined by the Genocide Convention, namely killing, causing serious bodily or mental harm, deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the destruction of the Palestinians in whole or in part, and imposing measures intended to prevent births.

Australia’s obligations under the Geneva Convention

Pillay criticised Australia’s muted response to the Commission’s finding that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza.

“Under the Genocide Convention, every state… has the legal obligation to prevent the commission of genocide, to deal with the commission of genocide, and to protect against genocide.”

She called on the Australian government to define and publicise its policy on genocide prevention, warning that the government’s maintenance of ties to entities complicit in the genocide could leave it open to prosecution.

“Be careful what you’re doing,” Pillay said.

“You may one day face charges of complicity in genocide.”

Her comments come amid growing pressure on the Albanese government over Australia’s defence ties with Israel, via the F-35 program and contracts with Israeli weapons manufacturers.

Monday's death of former Vice President Dick Cheney at age 84 has drawn reactions across the spectrum from U.S. citizens who remember a man who shaped war, peace and power for half a century.

Cheney, who served as President George W. Bush's vice president from 2001-2009, left an indelible mark on U.S. foreign policy, intelligence agencies and presidential authority. His death is prompting tributes from governors and members of Congress, and criticism from opponents.

Bush said Cheney was a calm, steady presence in the White House after Sept. 11, 2001, and a leader who put national security first. The ex-president wrote that he and former First Lady Laura Bush “will remember Dick Cheney for the decent, honorable man that he was.”

Cheney, a Nebraska native, started life in Lincoln and grew into one of the most powerful national security figures in modern America.

The Heritage Foundation, one of the nation's largest conservative movements since its 1973 institution, praised Cheney in an elaborate statement referring to him as "a committed conservative who dedicated his life to public service."

“Cheney was a kind man with high expectations and even deeper loyalty to America and its defenders, his family, and his friends," the statement reads. "He gave me great opportunities and was devoted to conservative principles and to all those he worked with.
